Synopsis

In Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a young couple are drinking and making out in a truck when Claire Novak pulls the young man out of the vehicle and holds a blade to his throat. She demands to know what he is.

Meanwhile, Sam and Dean are hanging out in the Bunker and discussing the “quiet” when Claire calls to ask for help on a case. The boys head to South Dakota.

Jody Mills picks up Alex Jones at school and watches proudly as she assimilates with the most popular kids in school and talks about prom with her boyfriend, Henry. When they arrive home, they see the Impala in the driveway. Jody invites the boys to stay for dinner so they can help referee the girls and talk some sense into Claire.

As the boys enjoy a home-cooked meal, Claire wants to discuss the case. Jody downplays the evidence and Alex teases Claire, who then turns it around and asks Alex about her plans to lose her virginity. This leads to a sex talk by Jody who looks to the boys for assistance. After an awkward discussion, Jody and Dean retreat to the kitchen. Jody is worried about Claire being alone and hiding in hunting. Dean sends Sam to talk with her.

Sam asks Claire about college and having a real life. Claire thinks Alex hates her and she feels left out. Sam encourages her to take advantage of the opportunities she has.

Back at the high school, Alex's teacher is attacked. The next morning, Alex and Henry find the teacher duct-taped to the top of the flag pole. Sam and Dean, as FBI agents, and with Jody's help, investigate. They find a fiber at the scene and send it away for analysis. Then, Claire pushes her way in and wants to help with the case. Dean pulls her aside and lectures her about having respect for Jody and taking advantage of the opportunities that Jody has given. They are interrupted by Alex and Henry, and when Dean stares down Henry, they walk off. Henry asks Alex how she knows the FBI agents.

The investigation continues, with Dean checking the school for EMF while Sam and Jody interview the employees. Dean and Sam meet up to compare notes. Dean didn't find anything, but Sam thinks the janitor, Richard Beesome, was acting “squirrelly”. Meanwhile, Alex and Henry talk about what happened. Alex tells Henry that there are awful things out there and she wasn't always a good person. She flashes back to her life with the vampires. Henry tries to comfort her.

At the house, Sam and Claire are researching when Dean and Jody return. The fiber at the scene was asbestos, but they don't know what that means. They also discover that the janitor's social security number is not real and that he started at the school about the same time as the disappearances started. Claire wants to go along with Sam and Dean to talk with the janitor, but Jody reminds her of their meeting with the registrar at college.

That evening, as Jody and Claire are leaving, they are attacked and kidnapped by a vampire—Richard Beesome, the janitor. Before he hauls them away, Jody is able to call Dean. Sam and Dean rush to the house, where they find evidence of a struggle. Dean gets a call from the police saying they have identified the janitor. The janitor's family was killed, and he was from the same town as Alex. Dean goes to get Alex while Sam goes to investigate at the janitor's house. Meanwhile, Alex tells Henry to leave her, but he attacks her instead. As Sam investigates, Dean discovers that Alex is missing as well. The boys talk and conclude that the girls were taken to a school building that was closed due to asbestos. They agree to meet there.

Meanwhile, Claire and Jody are tied up by Richard. Alex and Henry arrive, and Alex demands to know what is going on. Richard starts talking about family reunions. He reminds Alex who he is. Three years ago, he had tried to help her by driving her home, when her vampire family attacked him and turned him. He then killed his wife and son. He was a good man, but now he wants revenge. He set her up by turning the most popular kid into a vampire to get close to her. He then killed her favorite teacher, and now he intends to kill her family. Richard and Henry continue to taunt Alex, while Jody and Claire cry out for them to stop. When Richard pulls Claire to her feet and threatens her, Jody tells him that hunters are searching for them and Alex volunteers to help them so they don't hurt Claire. Richard bites Claire anyway, although he doesn't kill her.

Meanwhile, Sam arrives and is attacked by Richard and Henry. Henry fights Sam, while Richard approaches Alex. Claire, who has rallied, attacks Richard. Then Dean arrives and chops off Richard's head. Sam subdues Henry and brings him over to Alex. When he taunts Alex, she punches him and then Claire chops off his head.

The next morning, Claire and Alex attempt to make breakfast for Jody, as a thank-you. Alex is sorry for what happened. Jody and Claire assure her that it wasn't her fault, and Jody declares them family. Claire tells Dean that she knows what she has and she will be careful while hunting, while Sam warns Alex that other vamps might be coming. Then Jody sends the boys home with leftover ribs.

Quotes

Dean: So I'm guessing there's nothing on the Amara-meter, either.
Sam: Uhh no, I'm starting to think that God's psycho sister has gone to ground.
Sam: Dude, I'm not gonna survive hundreds of monster attacks to be flatlined by-by some double donut monstrosity.
Dean: This bird is fantastic. The way you mix it up with the potatoes and the-the beans, you guys eat like this every day?

Jody: It's just chicken.

Sam: It's shaped like chicken, not a patty or-or a nugget.
Alex: Claire did catch a werewolf. Oh right, turned out to be a German Shepherd with rabies.
Jody: And before that was the vampire. Council woman into erotic cosplay. I didn't know what cosplay was before that, super embarrassing for the force.
Jody: 'Kay, well, um. I may have definitely seen birth control pills in your backpack.

Sam: Oh, we're going there.
Dean: Okay.
Alex: Oh my god.
Jody: Hey, if we can't talk about it, we shouldn't be doing it, right? Right?

Dean: What?
Jody: What I will tell you is that birth control pills are useless against STDs. Whoever you are with needs to suit up, every time, always. No pulling up the drawbridge early.

Alex: Ugh, I get it!
Jody: And don't expect the guy, as much as I love Henry, to show up packing. Right?

Dean: What?
Dean: Well, you know, I thought we would be helping you with monsters, not birth control.
Dean: You need to show Jody a little respect. She did you a huge solid by taking you in. She got you set up at school-

Claire: I don't want to go to school.
Dean: Nobody wants to go to school, Claire. It's school.
Claire: Exactly.
Dean: My point is, she's been busting her ass to give you a life. She's feeding you, hell, you got a nicer room than I do now, she kept you out of jail.
Claire: I never asked her to.

Dean: And that's what I'm talking about. You need to act like you give a crap. You need to appreciate what that woman's done-
Jody: It had to be the leg. I'm gonna need bionics.
Dean: You gonna be alright now that you're outnumbered again?

Jody: As long as everyone wears a condom, we'll be fine.

Dean: I want that bumper sticker.

Trivia & References

"Don't You Forget About Me" is a reference to the song "Don't You (Forget About Me)," which is famous for its use in the John Hughes film The Breakfast Club.
Sam: Get this. Some -- some dude took a picture of a weasel riding a flying woodpecker. Midair. I-it's kind of nuts.
The photo Sam is talking about was taken by amateur photographer Martin Le-May in 2015.
Sam: What the hell is that?

Dean: That? That's the Elvis.

"The Elvis" is a variation on the Luther Burger, which was named after singer Luther Vandross. Elvis Presley was known in his final years for indulging in extreme foods.
Dean: Hey. Long time. Your, uh, Caddyshack review is way overdue.
Caddyshack is a 1980 comedy golf film starring Bill Murray and Chevy Chase. In 10.20 Angel Heart, Dean was shocked that Claire hadn't seen the movie and gave her a DVD of the film.
Jody: Winchesters?

Alex: Why would they be here?
Jody: I didn't put up the Bat-Signal.

The Bat Signal is a silhouette in the shape of a bat, projected from a large light, that Commissioner Gordon uses to let Batman know he is needed.
Claire: It's not like I need the Biebs on my wall.
"Biebs" refers to singer Justin Bieber.
As Sam and Dean stroll the hallway of the school, a mural can be seen painted on the lockers. This mural shows characters from the anime YuYu Hakusho which features a teenager who investigates demons in the human world.
Jody: Okay, I'm gonna run his I.D. photo through the database.

Claire: I'm coming with you. I have a fed suit and I can be your new agent trainee.
Jody: Okay, hold on there, Quantico.

Quantico was a TV series about FBI recruits in training.
Dean's alias, "Agent Noon" is a reference to former Def Leppard drummer Frank Noon.
Henry: Seriously, Al? You were a complete freak, I mean, you were an angry loner creeping around the school like a Trench Coat Mafia.
Trench Coat Mafia was reportedly the name of a group of friends to which the teenagers responsible for the mass shooting at Columbine High School in 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, belonged.
Jody: Okay, stop looking at me like that. I feel like Tiny Tim.
Tiny Tim is an ill child who uses a crutch and iron frame to support himself in Charles Dicken's story A Christmas Carol.
Dean: Does that mean you're gonna make her life less hellish?

Claire: I solemnly swear not to hunt like a dumbass.

Claire's response is related to the phrase "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good." from the film Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban.
