Synopsis

Back in a newly restored Impala, Sam and Dean are investigating some murders and cattle mutilations, when they discover that the latest victim is a vampire. They meet another hunter, Gordon Walker, who has been hunting vampires ever since one took his sister. Gordon has heard of Sam and Dean, but declines their help on his hunt. After rescuing Gordon from a vampire attack, however, Dean and Gordon bond over a few drinks. Dean admits that he is putting on a brave face for Sam, and that his father’s death has affected him deeply.

Sam, suspicious of Gordon, is returning to the motel when he is captured by the vampires who are led by Lenore. She explains that the vampires have forsworn killing humans and are trying to live peacefully, drinking only cattle blood. Released unharmed, Sam tries to convince Dean that they should not pursue the vampires. Dean insists that anything supernatural should be killed, while Sam argues their mission is to stop evil. The argument ends when Dean punches Sam after he accuses Dean of using Gordon as replacement for their father.

They boys track down the vampire homestead where Gordon is torturing Lenore. Dean and Sam argue with Gordon that unlike the vampires that killed his sister, these vampires are different. Gordon reveals that the vampire that attacked his sister didn't kill her, but turned her, and afterward he hunted her down himself and killed her. Dean is horrified by the revelation. Gordon grabs Sam and cuts him, taunting Lenore with his blood. When Lenore shows that she is capable of fighting her vampiric urges, Dean overpowers Gordon, allowing Sam to rescue Lenore.

Sam takes Lenore and leaves to help her and her friends leave town. Meanwhile, Dean ties Gordon up. When Sam returns, Dean admits that Sam was right and muses that their world does not seem as black and white as it once did.

Quotes

Dean: Whoo! Listen to her purr! Have you ever heard anything so sweet?

Sam: You know, if you two wanna get a room, just let me know, Dean.

Dean: Oh, don't listen to him, baby. He doesn't understand us.
Dean: Got my car, got a case, things are looking up.
Sam: Wow. Give you a couple of severed heads and a pile of dead cows and you're Mister Sunshine.
Dean: Hey, those satanists in Florida, they marked their victims, didn't they?

Sam: Yeah, reversed pentacle on the forehead.

Dean: Yeah. So much f'd up crap happens in Florida.
Gordon: Sam and Dean Winchester. I can't believe it. You know I met your old man once? Hell of a guy. Great hunter. I heard he passed. I'm sorry. It's big shoes. But from what I hear you guys fill 'em. Great trackers, good in a tight spot --

Dean: You seem to know a lot about our family.
Gordon: Word travels fast. You know how hunters talk.
Dean: No, we don't, actually.

Gordon: I guess there's a lot your dad never told you, huh?
Gordon: Well, lighten up a little, Sammy.

Sam: He's the only one who gets to call me that.
Gordon: Okay. No offense meant. Just celebrating a little. Job well done.

Sam: Right. Well, decapitations aren't my idea of a good time, I guess.
Dean: ...So. I pick up this crossbow. And I hit that ugly sucker with a silver-tipped arrow right in his heart. Sammy's waiting in the car, and uh, me and my Dad take the thing into the woods, burn it to a crisp. I'm sitting there and looking into the fire, and I'm thinking to myself, I'm sixteen years old. Most kids my age are worried about pimples, prom dates. I'm seeing things that they'll never even know. Never even dream of. So right then, I just sort of --

Gordon: Embraced the life?

Dean: Yeah.
Gordon: First time I saw a vampire I was barely eighteen. Home alone with my sister. I hear the window break in her room. I grab my Dad's gun, run in, try to get it off her. Too late. So I shoot the damn thing. Which of course is about as useful as snapping it with a rubber band. It rushes me, picks me up, flings me across the room, knocks me out cold. When I wake up, the vampire's gone, my sister's gone.

Dean: And then?

Gordon: Then... try explaining that one to your family. So I left home. And then bummed around looking for information: how you track 'em, how you kill 'em. And I found that fang - it was my first kill.
Sam: You're telling me you're responsible for all the --

Lenore: It's not ideal, in fact it's disgusting. But... it allows us to get by.
Sam: Okay, uh, why?

Lenore: Survival. No deaths, no missing locals, no reason for people like you to come looking for people like us. We blend in. Our kind is practically extinct. Turns out we weren't quite as high up the food chain as we imagined.
Dean: What part of 'vampires' don't you understand, Sam? If it's supernatural, we kill it, end of story. That's our job.

Sam: No, Dean, that is not our job. Our job is hunting evil. And if these things aren't killing people, they're not evil!
Dean: Of course they're killing people, that's what they do. They're all the same, Sam. They're not human, okay? We have to exterminate every last one of them.

Sam: No, Dean, I don't think so, all right? Not this time.
Dean: No, but every instinct told me to. I was going to kill her. I was going to kill them all.

Sam: Yeah Dean, but you didn't. And that's what matters.
Dean: Yeah. Well, 'cause you're a pain in my ass.
Sam: Guess I might have to stick around to be a pain in the ass then.
Dean: Thanks.

Sam: Don't mention it.

Trivia & References

"Bloodlust" is a reference to the 1961 movie of the same name about a crazed hunter.
Sam and Dean masquerade as journalists from the Weekly World News, a trashy supermarket tabloid that was actually published from 1979 to 2007, consisting of reports of alleged supernatural occurrences. See a later reference in 2.15 Tall Tales.
BloodlustManners.jpg

The morgue attendant's name tag says "J. Manners." This is a reference to series producer Kim Manners. Arguably the exchange between him and Dean is another reference - Dean says, "John...?" and the attendant replies, "It's Jeff." Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays John Winchester.

Dean: Maybe we should, uh, you know, look in her mouth, see if those wackos stuffed anything down her throat. You know, kinda like the moth in Silence of the Lambs.

Sam: Yeah, here, go ahead.
Dean: No, you go ahead.
Sam: What?
Dean: "Put the lotion in the basket."

Reference to the fact that serial killer "Buffalo Bill" placed moths in the mouths of his victims in The Silence of the Lambs. "Put the lotion in the basket," is reference to this scene. Later whenEllen speaks to Sam, she also references the movie when she says "Yeah, and Hannibal Lecter is a good psychiatrist."
Dean: Yeah, real night owls, you know? Sleep all day, party all night.
"Sleep all day, party all night," which is part of the tagline for the 1987 vampire film The Lost Boys.
Sam: What do you know about vampires?

Gordon: How to kill them. Now seriously, bro. That knife's making me itch. Whoa. Easy there, Chachi. See? Fangless. Happy? Now. Who the hell are you?

Chachi is a reference to the character Chachi Arcola from the sitcom Happy Days.
Lenore is possibly named after the vampire in the 18th century poem about vampires by Gottfried August Bürger. "Lenore" was one of the first vampire stories and influenced Bram Stoker's novel Dracula.
The vampires in this episode live off animal blood, like several other vampires in popular culture, including Edward Cullen (Twilight), Louis de Pointe du Lac (Interview with the Vampire), Angel (Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel), and Stefan Salvatore (The Vampire Diaries).
Lenore: If we can change, they can change.
This line is similar to Rocky Balboa's comment after the fight in Rocky IV: "If I can change, and you can change, everybody can change."

Minutiae

Jared broke his right wrist during the filming of this episode. In 2.04 Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things they wrote in the line for Sam, "I think she broke my hand" after his fight with Angela Mason to explain Sam wearing a cast on his right arm in the episodes from 2.05 Simon Said until 2.11 Playthings. Jared had time off during 2.06 No Exit for surgery on his wrist. Jared talks about the accident here.
Amber Benson is best known for her role as Tara, Willow's lover on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She next appeared as Lenore in 6.19 Mommy Dearest.
Ty Olsson is an X-Files, Dark Angel and Battlestar Galactica alumnus. He later reappears in season eight of Supernatural as the vampire Benny Lafitte.
This is the Metallicar's return to the road after the damage sustained at the end of 1.22 Devil's Trap. There is an extended sequence of her on the open road, as AC/DC's "Back in Black" plays. The dialogue that follows is the first time Dean refers to the impala as "Baby".
A shot of the Impala seen during the "Back in Black" montage was later used in 4.04 Metamorphosis.
Shot of the Impala reused for a scene in 4.04 Metamorphosis.

While in Red Lodge, they stay at the Adobe Court Motel, Room 4.
Jensen's sister Mackenzie appears as the Sherriff's assistant.
