The Colt was made by Samuel Colt in 1835. When it is used with the supernatural bullets he made specially for it, the gun can kill anything. It was the first supernatural weapon introduced in the series.
Lucifer says that there are only five things in all of creation that can't be killed by the Colt and that he is one of them, whether he meant himself personally or archangels in general was never specified. It should also be noted that while the Colt can kill (almost) anything the shot must still be a kill shot. When Sam shoots John, while he is possessed by Azazel
, in the leg, the demon survives, but the shot allows for John to briefly take back control of his body before Azazel escapes. The Alpha Vampire later revealed in 12.14 The Raid that the five things that the Colt cannot kill are five individual creatures rather than five specific species of monsters.
Samuel Colt also designed the locked door to keep the portal to Hell known as the Devil's Gate from opening. The Devil's Gate and the Colt are linked together, the gun serves as the key to the gate, allowing it to be opened by inserting the Colt's muzzle into the keyhole. Colt then built a railroad of iron in the shape of a pentagram, with a church at each of the points, around the Devil's Gate to further ensure that it was demon-proof.
Castiel returned to the Bunker to talk to Sam and Dean about his temporary partnership with the angels, but it turns out to be a ruse to steal the Colt which was under Dean's pillow rather than in their safe for safe-keeping. After Joshua had tracked down Dagon through a celestial pulse caused by the Nephilim, Castiel and Kelvin went to her safe house along with Hozai and the Colt to kill both her and Kelly Kline with the remaining two bullets. He used one of the bullets to attempt to kill Dagon, but she teleported out of the way. Castiel went downstairs with every intent to kill Kelly, but he couldn't do it. After Sam and Dean had caught up with them, they explained their plan to make the Nephilim into a human by extracting its grace so both the baby and Kelly can live, but Kelly refused to let them do it because she wants her child to be born with its powers. After waiting in the Impala, Kelly had taken the keys and drove away with Castiel intending to go to Heaven's Gate, leaving the Colt with Sam and Dean. When they arrived, they discovered that Dagon had caught up with them after killing Hozai, Kelvin, and Joshua when he appeared. When Sam and Dean arrived and tried to stop Dagon from taking Kelly again, she attacked Dean and took the Colt from him. Dagon used her power to heat up and melt the barrel of the Colt, causing the muzzle to fall off and severely damaging the gun. Castiel is later able to kill Dagon without the Colt using the powers of the Nephilim; Jack Kline.
Sam retrieves the pieces of the damaged Colt and takes them back to the Bunker where it
's shown that the heat has deformed parts of the gun's mechanisms. Sam promises to attempt to repair the legendary gun, but he is unsure if he can.

Make and Model of The Colt: The Colt has the appearance of an 1836 Colt Paterson Pietta Paterson Super Deluxe. In reality, the Colt Paterson, which is the first Revolver ever built, is surprisingly difficult to load. It can be assumed that the gun itself was modified in 3.04 Sin City when Bobby agreed to let Ruby restore its supernatural killing abilities which would explain how it can be easily reloaded without undergoing the painstakingly long process of deconstructing
it's barrel. See: History of the Colt Paterson.
Bullets: The 13 bullets made by Samuel Colt are engraved with numbers. Whenever The Colt fires a bullet, a cross within a circle along with a few vestiges of ancient scripture appear on the tip of it and burns orange-red right before it hits anything. It was first noticed in 2.22 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part Two when Dean uses the final original bullet in the chamber to kill Azazel. Whenever the Colt was used in Season 12, the cross can be seen in 12.14 The Raid when the Alpha Vampire was killed by Sam and 12.17 The British Invasion when Eileen Leahy intended to shoot Dagon, but hits Renny Rawlings when she teleports out of the way. The cross appears to resemble a Cross Potent, the Sun Cross, or a Ringed Cross.
Ruby was able to build more bullets for the Colt in 3.04 Sin City, and later in 12.14 The Raid, Sam relates that Bobby had learned the method from her and passed it on to him. The process requires holy oil, sage and myrrh. They are mixed to make a tincture and used to coat silver bullets and the following spell must be recited to mimic the original etchings: "Signum est imitandum. Signum est imitandum."
* 2.22 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part Two: The Colt is used by Jake as a key to open the Devil's Gate in Wyoming.
* 3.04 Sin City: Ruby helps Bobby rebuild the Colt
so it will use any ammunition. Sam then uses it to kill Father Gil and Casey. This also marks the first time the Colt bullets now give off an orange-red hue when they kill a demon much like the bullet's effects with Azazel, but now it 's for every demon Sam and Dean use the Colt on.
* 3.05 Bedtime Stories: Sam uses the Colt to kill a crossroads demon.
* 3.07 Fresh Blood: Dean shoots a vampire with it. This is the first time after Ruby helps Bobby make more bullets for the Colt, as well as the last time (so far), that we've seen the blue-colored hue being used after Dean kills the vampire. It can be suggested that the blue hue is only used against monsters now.
* 12.18 The Memory Remains: Sam uses it to kill the god Moloch.
* 12.19 The Future: Castiel attempted to kill Dagon with the Colt, but she teleported out of the way, while the bullet struck the wall.
Dean uses the third remaining bullet to kill the demon Tom, after he and Sam rescue John. Their father, possessed by the Yellow-Eyed Demon, begs Sam to shoot him, but he cannot kill his father and uses the fourth bullet to shoot John in the leg, the hesitation to kill the demon and John with him, allowing it to flee.
2.01 In My Time of Dying
Sam uses the Colt to frighten off the demon-possessed trucker. Later, John trades the Colt and the remaining bullet (and his soul) in a deal with Azazel for Dean's life.
2.22 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part Two
The Yellow-Eyed Demon gives the Colt to Jake Talley in order to open the Devil's Gate in Wyoming. After making his way to Fossil Butte Cemetery, Jake succeeds in opening the gate by threatening Ellen's life, but after Sam kills him, Dean retrieves the Colt from the crypt door. The Yellow-Eyed Demon shows up and takes the Colt from Dean, but after John's spirit distracts the demon by ripping him out of his meatsuit, Dean grabs the Colt back and shoots Azazel in the heart with the last bullet just as he returns to his host, finally killing him. Bobby and Ellen were later able to seal the devil's gate before any more demons or spirits could escape.
Bobby is seen working on the Colt.
3.04 Sin City
Bobby is trying to figure out how the Colt works when Ruby arrives and offers to help return its demon killing powers. Bobby later shoots at the possessed Father Gil with it -– and misses. Sam eventually uses it to kill Father Gil and Casey.
3.05 Bedtime Stories
The Crossroads Demon outside of Lloyd's Bar recognizes that the Colt has been modified, stating that it was not "the original Colt." She realizes that Ruby was the one who modified it. Sam eventually uses the Colt to kill the crossroads demon to try to get Dean out of his contract.
5.09 The Real Ghostbusters
Becky tells Sam that in the Supernatural book written by Chuck Shurley which tells the events of 3.15 Time Is on My Side, Bela gave the Colt not to Lilith but to Crowley; her right hand demon and possible lover
5.10 Abandon All Hope...
After using it to kill two of his hench-demons, Crowley gives the Colt and some more bullets to the Winchesters to kill Lucifer who is in Carthage, Missouri. Dean uses it against the hellhounds, and either wounds, or kills one, but is unable to stop them all. Dean shoots Lucifer in the head at point-blank range, telling him to "suck it." Lucifer falls and appears to be dead at first, but he gets up in pain, the bullet wound in his forehead heals, and he punches Dean into a tree, dropping the Colt in the process. Lucifer goes on to explain to Sam that he is one of five things in all of creation that the gun can't kill. It was later revealed that when Castiel teleported Sam and Dean out of the battlefield, the Colt was left behind and was retrieved by Crowley while Lucifer was releasing Death from his prison.
Sam was able to take Dean and Bobby to the library in the Campbell Compound to look through Samuel's lore books and find a way to kill Eve. Bobby was able to find out that the ashes of a phoenix can kill Eve and Dean recovers Samuel Colt's Journal and discovers that in March 5, 1861 the Colt was used to kill a phoenix in Sunrise, Wyoming. They were able to summon Castiel so they can travel back to 1861, but they only have 24 hours before he brings them back. Samuel Colt is retired from hunting, and completing the railway devil's trap to protect the Devil's Gate. Two demons enter his home looking for the gun, and he shoots them with the Colt. When Sam arrives and asks for his assistance, he refuses, but eventually gives Sam the Colt. Dean uses the Colt to kill Elias Finch — the phoenix.
However, Dean drops the Colt just before he and Sam are transported back to the present day. It is possible that the Colt was retrieved by the saloon owner Elkins. In the present day, the Colt was originally in the possession of Daniel Elkins and its possible that the Elkins of 1861 was an ancestor who passed it down to him. It was stated in Colt's Journal that he knew the saloon keeper personally. Since there were two bullets left in the chamber at most after it was used to kill two demons and a phoenix, and the fact that Daniel Elkins was loading five bullets into the Colt when it was first introduced in 1.20 Dead Man's Blood, it
's implied that while Samuel Colt returned to Sunrise, Wyoming to retrieve the phoenix ashes, he also gave the Colt to the saloon keeper Elkins along with the special bullets with the hopes that it will eventually end up with Sam.

In the aftermath of Castiel disappearing with Kelly Kline, Dean asks Sam if he is able to fix the damaged Colt, which is now in two pieces, who is hopeful, but uncertain.

Legend of the Colt
Although not obvious to anyone not familiar with the Paterson model, "the Colt" does in fact, have a trigger. While the Colt Paterson Revolvers in general, as well as "the Colt" do not have trigger guards, the trigger for these revolvers are inset flush into base of the frame, and drop down automatically when the hammer is cocked. The trigger can be clearly seen behind Bobby's finger when he is test-firing it in the scene where Ruby first appears to help him modify it to restore its demon killing abilities. The trigger and the hammer can also be seen up close when Sam kills the Alpha Vampire with The Colt in 12.14 The Raid.
Speculation by Fans== The legend of the Colt has brought up a lot of speculation between the fans due to some inconsistencies with its history. ===Stopping the Bullet=== When Sam tried to use the Colt to kill her, the demon [ [Tammi]] was able to stop the bullet in midair in 3. 09 Malleus Maleficarum. This could either suggest the bullets aren't that powerful when a demon is expecting the bullet, or perhaps a demonic witch may be able to stop a demon- killing bullet from the Colt. And if that was the case, you could also wonder if Ruby would've been able to stop the Colt's bullet as well if Sam didn't stop Dean from shooting her. Case Mis- proven: Azazel was killed by it, and he knew the bullet was in fact coming. As well, Azazel was far more powerful than Ruby, so how could she stop the bullet if Azazel could not. Dean, when he was sent into the past by Castiel in 4.03 In The Beginning, told Azazel that he was the one that killed him, but Azazel was skeptical and refused to believe that it was true. It can only be assumed that either John's attack weakened him to the point where he was unable to teleport out of the way or stop the bullet from hitting him or because he was in shock from discovering that what Dean told him about being the one who kills him decades ago was true and unavoidable. ===The Five Things=== Lucifer says that there are only five things in all of creation that can't be killed by the Colt and that he is one of them. There's no definite answer whether or not Eve can be killed by the Colt. Death could be more powerful than the archangels since in the end he would reap God and he told Dean that he existed at least as long as God, possibly more, but neither one of them can remember exactly how long anymore. The other 3 Horsemen: Famine, Pestilence and War: are immortal, but powerless without their rings unlike their brother Death who is the ultimate reaper. The only way the other three Horsemen were stopped was by cutting off their rings, but they did not die. Therefore, there's reason to believe the Colt can 't kill them. However, there might be a reason to separate Death and the Horsemen since they are on different power levels. If this is true, then Eve can be killed by the Colt, since the Horsemen are older and bump her off the list. Since Death is the only Horseman of the Apocalypse who doesn' t actually need his ring, it stands to reason that Death is immune to the Colt while the other three Horsemen are not. Another question is that could the Colt kill Cain? He was the one with the First Blade and the Mark of Cain which evidently renders the bearer immortal. If the user dies, it comes back as a Knight of Hell. The First Blade killed Cain. If Cain cannot be killed with the Colt, then it could be because he was either Adam and Eve' s firstborn son or because he was the holder of the Mark of Cain, as he was made into a Knight after the Princes of Hell were made, who are susceptible to the Colt like Azazel. Since the Princes existed before him, it proves that Cain can be killed by the Colt. The Alpha Vampire told Sam that "there are five creatures on this Earth that gun cannot kill" and tried to pass of that he was one of them, but Sam doesn' t believe him and eventually kills him. It confirms that the five things that the Colt cannot kill are five individual creatures rather than five specific species of monsters. Since Lucifer was unaffected by the Colt, it points out that Michael can' t be killed by it either and it was previously stated that both Michael and Lucifer appear to be on different power levels than Gabriel and Raphael. It raises the question if Gabriel and Raphael are susceptible to the Colt, but since both archangels were trapped in a ring of holy fire which had to be extinguished by water to release them and Lucifer was trapped in a ring of holy fire that extinguished itself, despite the warding used to trap him and the fact that Michael was molotov cocktailed by Castiel with a flaming bottle filled with holy fire and survived, it shows that Gabriel and Raphael may be somewhat weaker than Michael and Lucifer, presenting the possibility that they could be killed by the Colt. It is unknown if the Colt is capable of killing the Cosmic Entity, but it is implied that since it has existed outside of Creation before God and Amara, it cannot be classified as one of the five creatures as they exist within Creation while the Cosmic Entity exists within the Empty.
