It's later revealed that when Lucifer was killed, his vessel [[Nick]] was spared and is currently at the Bunker's dungeon. Sam theorizes that when an archangel blade kills an archangel, the blade spares the life of the vessel. <ref name="fourteen01">[[14.01 Stranger in a Strange Land]]</ref> Nick, who begins feeling lost without Lucifer,<ref name="fourteen07">[[14.07 Unhuman Nature]]</ref> later discovers that Lucifer had his family murdered by the demon [[Abraxas]] specifically so that Lucifer could manipulate him.<ref name="fourteen11" />
Awakened in the Empty by Nick's [[prayer]],<ref name="fourteen07" /> Lucifer began to plot his own [[resurrection]] through Nick. Though Nick succeeded in bringing Lucifer back to Earth, he was interrupted by Jack , who killed Nick and sent Lucifer back to the Empty.<ref name="fourteen17">[[14.17 Game Night]]</ref>

After learning that [[Nick]] injected [[Donatello Redfield]] with [[angel]] [[grace]], Sam confronts him. Nick reveals that he has been working with [[demons]] to [[Resurrection|resurrect]] Lucifer , who is awake in [[the Empty]]. Using the angel grace, Nick was able to communicate with Lucifer through Donatello; where , allowing Lucifer would to instruct Nick on how to resurrect him using [[Jack]]'s blood.
After escaping Sam, Nick performs the [[spell]], opening a [[portal]] to the Empty from which Lucifer emerges in the form of a black viscous skeletal being with glowing red eyes and black viscous wings. As Lucifer prepares to possess Nick, Jack arrives and sends Lucifer back to the Empty before killing Nick.
