While looking for [[the Occultum]], the Winchesters learn from [[Anael]] that she gave it to Ruby, leading to a flashback revealing that the two sometimes worked together. Anael claims that she gave the Occultum to Ruby to sell and that the demon hid it in Hell before her own death as she didn't have enough time to sell it before Dean killed her. However, this turns out to be a trap and Anael attempts to have them killed by [[demons]].
Suspicious of the holes in Anael's story, Castiel decides to visit [[the Empty]] to ask Ruby herself about the Occultum. The [[Cosmic Entity]] reluctantly directs Castiel to a pulsating mass that transforms into Ruby, taking the form she had when Ruby died. Though surprised, Ruby reveals the truth about her deal with Anael and requests that Castiel get her out of the Empty in exchange for his help. Ruby reveals to Castiel where she hid the Occultum in a church, but fails to mention the [[hellhounds]] that she left to guard it.
