Not long after Michael's death, Lucifer's former vessel Nick attempts to resurrect Lucifer from the Empty with the help of demons. With Nick's prayer having awakened Lucifer months earlier, he is able to contact the archangel using Prophet Donatello Redfield, enhanced by angel grace, as a mouthpiece. Lucifer gives Nick instructions on a ritual involving Jack's blood that will bring Lucifer back from the Empty. Though Nick nearly succeeds, getting as far opening a portal that Lucifer emerges from, Jack intervenes and banishes Lucifer back to the Empty before killing Nick to keep him from trying again.
When God begins the end of the world, he opens every door in Hell, including the door to Lucifer's Cage. According to the demon Belphegor, the Prime Earth version of Michael of Sam and Dean's world remains just sitting in the Cage, but Belphegor suggests that he might be looking for revenge for being trapped if he does leave.
Michael eventually escapes from the Cage, still in the body of Adam Milligan and sharing control with his vessel. After learning from the demon tablet that Michael might know something that could help them, the Winchesters seek out the help of the archangel, taking him prisoner and trying to convince him of the threat from God. Disillusioned by their revelations, particularly Castiel's memories of God, Michael provides them with the spell to trap his father and opens a portal to Purgatory for them, but refuses to otherwise help and departs.
Michael later helps the Winchesters in their last stand against God by finding a way to open and read Chuck's Death Book. However, Chuck also revives Lucifer as an emissary to retrieve the book. Initially stating he was revived by the Cosmic Entity to aid them, Lucifer kills a reaper named Betty to make her into the new Death, making her capable of opening the book, but before she can reveal the book's contents, Lucifer kills her and steals the book. He offers Jack a chance to join their side, but Michael kills him with an archangel blade. Jealous of Chuck choosing Lucifer over him to help, Michael tips Chuck off on their plan to be the favorite once again, but Chuck, unable to look past Michael's alliance with the Winchesters, kills him as a result, leaving the archangels extinct, but the Winchesters succeed in helping Jack steal Chuck's power, making him the new God.
