Castiel finds out that Adam is being held in the [[Green Room]], and that it is heavily guarded. Castiel takes Sam and Dean to an abandoned warehouse where he says they can access the [[Green Room]]. Castiel says he can get them in there, although it may be suicidal. He says that is preferable to watching Dean fail, and that he doesn't have the faith in dean that Sam does. He then takes a box cutter from his pocket.
Inside the warehouse, Castiel is attacked by angels. As they close in on him, he rips open his shirt, revealing he has carved an [[Angel Banishing Sigil]] into his chest. As he slaps his hand on it, it disperses all the angels including himself. The effects of the sigil on him are unknown, but it is confirmed that Castiel is still alive.

Castiel calls Dean after waking up in a hospital even after being thought brain-dead. He says that he had been found on a shrimping boat and cannot teleport to where Dean and Sam are, and that he is effectively a human. He apologizes to Dean, and hangs up.
When Dean and Sam, are being beaten by [[Pestilence]], Castiel shows up, and although Pestilence grounds him, Castiel manages to cut off his ring saying that he might still have traces of his angelic ability. He kills a demon that was accompanying Pestilence, as the Horseman vanishes.
Castiel accompanies Sam and Bobby in an attempt to destroy a building containing the Croatoan virus, which is disguised as a swine flu vaccine. On the way, Castiel is filled in on Sam's idea to lure Lucifer into his cage, and says that it's probably the best option available. At the vaccine shipping facility, Castiel saves Sam from being killed by an infected human.
Castiel also informs Sam that Michael is now considering Adam for a vessel.
