This tie-in is a guidebook to folklore/the supernatural, in the form of John's Journal. From the author's blog:
- I'm writing a book tentatively called THE SUPERNATURAL GUIDE TO THE SUPERNATURAL, which is a collection of folklore taking the form of the journals of John Winchester, who will be a familiar figure to viewers of the CW (formerly WB) show SUPERNATURAL.
Content
The book is divided into several sections
- Spirits
- Monsters
- Ghouls, Revenants et Cetera
- Witches, Familiar and Black Dogs
- Demons
Appendix
- Herbs, Oil and Hoodoo Hands
- Names and Attributes of European Demons
The book is written from the POV of Sam and Dean, although this seems problematic, as the POV changes aren't evident -- it's more like Sam and Dean are one being, thus a single story teller.
The Supernatural Book of Monsters, Spirits, Demons and Ghouls gives information on various supernatural beings the boys have encountered, mainly giving a summary of the events in canon, sometimes fleshing it out with background information, often in the form of texts from John's Journal. These texts taken from John's journal are more coherent than the ones used on the show and more understandable.
As with Origins, this tie-in book struggles with a few minor contradictions: e.g. it's set somewhere before episode 2.20 What Is and What Should Never Be, as it doesn't mention their encounter with a djinn or the events in the season finale, but Sam and Dean mention things that happened in season one, e.g. the water spirit in episode 1.03 Dead in the Water at Lake Manitoc as having happened "...a few years back". Furthermore, a couple of small details are slightly off (Dean is four when Mary died, not five.)
Throughout the wiki, information taken from the book will be cited with the short tag BoM.
