Suynopsis

Dean is near-fatally wounded in a hunting accident and has weeks to live, so Sam takes matters into his own hands and brings Dean to a faith healer. When Dean is (reluctantly) healed, the brothers learn something is not right with the blind Reverend's methods. Further investigation reveals that the Reverend's wife, Sue Ann, has bound a Reaper with black magic, and is using the Reaper to take the lives of those she feels are immoral and give them to the sick and disabled churchgoers, one of which, brain tumor-stricken Layla, Dean feels a particular connection with. Dean and Sam put a stop to Sue Ann's preying on innocent people, but at the cost of leaving other innocents such as Layla to die of their afflictions.

Trivia & References

  • Deleted Scene from Season One DVD: Marshall Hall is seen swimming in the pool where he died. The scene cuts back and forth between Dean being healed by Roy Le Grange and Marshall being chased by the reaper.

Dean: Have you ever actually watched daytime TV? It's terrible.

Amusing, seeing as Jensen Ackles's first major gig was in the role of Eric Brady on the daytime soap Days of Our Lives from 1997-2000.

Dean: That fabric softener teddy bear. Ooh, I wanna hunt that little bitch down.

Snuggle Fabric Softener uses a disgustingly cute and possibly possessed Teddy Bear puppet in its commercials. For further reference: an original commercial; justification for Dean's fears.

Dean: Look, no disrespect, but I’m not exactly a believer.
Reverend Roy: You will be, son. You will be.

Calls to mind Yoda's words to Luke in The Empire Strikes Back:
Luke: I'm not afraid.
Yoda: You will be. You will be.
