On their way to rescue John, Sam reiterates the need to kill the Demon, while Dean argues the importance of family. Dean says Sam is like John: eager to die if it means killing the Demon. Sam demon proof's the car, so they can hide the Colt in it, to make sure the demon's don't get it. They arrive at the building where John is being kept (Sunrise Apartments, which they figure out from Meg's clue), form a plan to evacuate it that involves dressing up as firemen, and execute it. They are able to get the firemen outfits by Dean distracting the real firemen when the show up by claiming he wants to go back in the hotel to get his Yorkie, while Sam goes around the back of the firetruck, breaks in, and gets the suits. They get to the room which the figured out has demons inside. They trap the possessed humans guarding John in a closet and surround the door with salt. After, they find John almost dead in the bedroom. Sam insists on testing John with holy water. John is barely coherent, but he manages to ask about the Colt. Once all three are out of the building, they're set upon by [[Tom]], who beats Sam severely. Dean whips out the concealed Colt (which apparently hadn't been in the truck) and shoots him through the head, saving Sam.

In a secluded cabin, as the boys [[salt]] the doors and windows, Dean confesses that he's scared of the lengths he'll go to in order to protect his family. John enters, claiming that Dean should be proud of what he does for the family. Dean grows suspicious of the kind words and points the Colt at John. Sam uses the penultimate bullet in the Colt to shoot John in the leg, forcing the Demon to leave John's body. John begs Sam to shoot him, because he believes the demon is still inside him. Dean tells Sam not to. Sam lowers the gun, just as the demon escapes John's body.

Synopsis

Dean is desperate to contact his father, but as he makes another call, Meg answers John's phone. Meg taunts Dean that John is beyond help. Sam responds by saying that they should find the Demon and kill it with the Colt, but Dean counters that they need a plan because John isn't dead.

The boys arrive at the home of another hunter, Bobby Singer, and their shared history is quickly sketched out - Dean seems to know him quite well, and Bobby once ran John off with a shotgun. Sam goes through some of Bobby's books on demon lore, including the Key of Solomon, while Bobby and Dean talk. Suddenly Meg kicks in the door, attacks the boys, and demands the Colt. However, she soon gets caught under a devil's trap that is painted on the ceiling. Sam starts exorcising the demon. Dean interrogates her, demanding she tell them where their father is. Meg says she killed John, and that he died screaming. Sam reluctantly reads the ritual while Dean questions Meg about John; she repeatedly claims that John is dead, and Dean repeatedly refuses to believe it. Eventually, Meg says he is not dead, and tells them about a building in Jefferson City. Dean insists on exorcising the demon to save the girl, no matter how broken she is. Sam reluctantly reads the ritual. Finally, the demon is banished, and human Meg, dying painfully, thanks them and offers the clue "sunrise." The boys leave Bobby to head to Jefferson City.

Quotes

Dean: Bobby, thanks. Thanks for everything. To tell you the truth, I wasn’t sure we should come.

Bobby: Nonsense. Your Daddy needs help.
Dean: Well, yeah, but last time we saw you, I mean, you did threaten to blast him full of buckshot. Cocked the shotgun and everything.

Bobby: Yeah, well, what can I say? John just has that effect on people.
Bobby: I’ll tell you something else, too. This is some serious crap you boys stepped in.

Sam: Oh, yeah? How’s that?
Bobby: Normal year, I hear of, say, three demonic possessions. Maybe four, tops.
Dean: Yeah?
Bobby: This year I hear of 27 so far. You get what I’m saying? More and more demons are walking among us – a lot more.
Sam: Do you know why?

Bobby: No, but I know it’s something big. The storm’s coming, and you boys, your daddy – you are smack in the middle of it.
Dean: Where’s our father, Meg?

Meg: You didn’t ask very nice.
Dean: Where’s our father, bitch?

Meg: Jeez. You kiss your mother with that mouth? Oh wait, I forgot, you don’t.
Meg: I’m gonna to kill you. I’m gonna rip the bones from your body.
Dean: No, you’re gonna burn in Hell. Unless you tell us where our Dad is.
Bobby: You just go find your dad. And when you do, you bring him around, would you? I won’t even try to shoot him this time.
Sam: We want to kill this demon. You used to want that, too. Hell, I mean, you’re the one who came and got me at school! You’re the one who dragged me back into this, Dean. I’m just trying to finish it!

Dean: Well, you and Dad are a lot more alike than I thought, you know that? You both can’t wait to sacrifice yourself for this thing. But you know what? I’m gonna be the one to bury you. You’re selfish, you know that? You don’t care about anything but revenge.

Sam: That’s not true, Dean. I want Dad back. But they are expecting us to bring this gun. They get the gun, they will kill us all. That Colt is our only leverage and you know it, Dean. We can not bring that gun. We can’t.
Dean: You’re not mad?

John: For what?
Dean: Using a bullet.

John: Mad? I’m proud of you. You know, Sam and I, we can get pretty obsessed. But you – you watch out for this family. You always have.
Sam: I’m gonna kill you!
Demon John: Oh, that’d be a neat trick. In fact, (he puts the gun down on a table) here. Make the gun float to you there, psychic boy. Well, this is fun. I could’ve killed you a hundred times today, but this... this is worth the wait.... Your dad – he’s in here with me. Trapped inside his own meat suit. He says 'Hi,' by the way. He’s gonna tear you apart. He’s gonna taste the iron in your blood.
Dean: Let him go, or I swear to God –

Demon John: What? What are you and God gonna do? You see, as far as I’m concerned, this is justice. You know that little exorcism of yours? That was my daughter.
Dean: Who, Meg?
Demon John: The one in the alley? That was my boy. You understand.
Dean: You’ve got to be kidding me.

Demon John: What? You’re the only one that can have a family? You destroyed my children. How would you feel if I killed your family? Oh, that’s right. I forgot. I did. Still, two wrongs don’t make a right.
John: I’m surprised at you, Sammy. Why didn’t you kill it? I thought we saw eye-to-eye on this? Killing this demon comes first – before me, before everything.
Sam: No, sir. Not before everything. Look, we’ve still got the Colt. We still have the one bullet left. We just have to start over, alright? I mean, we already found the demon...

Trivia & References

Bobby: Hell, yeah. You get a demon in - they’re trapped. Powerless. It’s like a Satanic roach motel.
Roach Motel is a brand of roach bait, that uses scents to lure cockroaches into a compartment, where they become trapped, and unable to exit.
The name of Bobby's dog, Rumsfeld, is a reference to past U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
The book flipping pages seemingly of its own accord during Meg's exorcism is a visual reference to a similar occurrence (in similar circumstances) in the Evil Dead films.
Meg's exorcism/interrogation scene could be considered a visual reference to the interrogation scene of Sharon Stone's character in Basic Instinct, considering the similarities in styling (the short blonde hair), posing, and cinematography in certain shots.
