Synopsis

In the Bunker, Sam schools the refugees from Apocalypse World in his world’s current events. He tells them of the melting ice caps, protesting people, award-winning movies, and President Trump’s controversies. Bobby jokes that with everything going on in this world, how can they call where he’s from “Apocalypse World.” Sam soon gets a call from Dean telling him he's "got something."

At a lakeside cabin, Sam meets up with Dean, Castiel, and Jack. Together they take down a den of werewolves in what is part of Jack’s training. Meanwhile, Mary and Bobby are walking in the rain discussing how the people from Apocalypse World are settling into this one, telling Mary without an arcahngel to get them back, he's not exactly angry that they are stuck in her world. Telling Mary he's likes her world, he glances down to the ground and notices blood. They follow the blood trail to find Maggie’s dead body.

In the Bunker, Dean speculates to Sam that with Jack’s help maybe they can stop all the evil in the world and finally retire. As Dean goes to his room, he hears loud groaning coming from Jack's room. He enters and wakes Jack out of his bad dream. Jack tells Dean about his guilt of not being able to save everyone, leading to Dean consoling him telling him he has his own regrets about not saving people, telling Jack that he is is family and they look after their own when suddenly Sam rushes in holding his cell phone.

Mary, Bobby, Sam, Dean, Jack and Cas gather at the scene of the crime and speculate on the cause of Maggie’s death. Back at the Bunker, they interview a friend of Maggie’s and upon learning that Maggie is dead, she reveals that Maggie had a crush on a boy, Nate, who works at a store nearby. As he hears that, Jack disappears.

At the store, Jack uses his power to slam Nate into a glass refrigerator case. Sam and Dean soon arrive calling Jack’s name, but he doesn’t let Nate go so Dean shoots Jack in the back to get his attention. Learning that Nate is innocent, Jack apologizes to Nate and disappears. As he leaves the lights start to flicker, a high-pitched noise begins, and Dean tells Nate to go. Michael appears prompting Sam, Dean, and Castiel run out of the store to the Impala. As the store windows blow out, Dean heads for the trunk and ignites a cask of holy oil, throwing it in front of Michael allowing them to make their escape.

On a trail, Jack hits himself and berates himself for hurting people. He flashes to memories of previous uses of his powers where someone got hurt, when suddenly Lucifer appears and says he is back because Jack needs him. He tells Jack that no matter how you try to do right around humans, something always goes wrong. Jack agrees with this. Lucifer persuades Jack that leaving Earth is the opportunity to escape the past. Enticed at the idea of going off into space like in Star Wars, Jack agrees to go with Lucifer, but he wants his father to do something first.

In the Bunker, Bobby and Mary discuss Maggie’s death and suggest that it is possible that nothing supernatural was behind it, when Jack walks in with Lucifer, to Mary and Bobby's shock. He takes his father to Maggie's body and tells him to resurrect her, Lucifer is apprehensive at first, telling Jack people run the risk of coming back not normal. But is eventually goaded into resurrecting her, leaving with Jack immediately afterwards.

As Sam, Dean, and Cas arrive at the Bunker, they learn of Jack and Lucifer having already left. Dean contacts other hunters to be on the lookout for Lucifer while Sam interviews Maggie about her killer. She reveals to Sam that while she didn’t see his face, she did see his glowing red eyes.

Suddenly, the lights flicker in the Bunker and a loud banging sound begins. Sam and Dean urge Bobby and Mary to get Maggie and go, leaving through the garage. Michael blasts down the door to the Bunker and descends down to their level. Sam, Dean and Cas attempt to fight Michael, but Michael is able to deflect them away as he grabs Dean by the throat. He tells Dean that he is going to purge this world of sin, admitting he made mistakes on his world, and will do better this time. Telling Dean he will be the first to be "saved" as Michael tightens his strangle hold of Dean, Sam prays to Jack that they need help.

While Jack and Lucifer are stargazing, Lucifer is talking about how they are going to take the grand tour of creation, learn new things, and maybe come up with some improvements when Jack hears Sam’s prayer.

Michael continues to slowly strangle Dean, saying that he could have done it quickly but he wants to enjoy it. Suddenly, Michael is slammed back by Jack’s power and he releases. Jack uses his power to hurt Michael, who cries out in pain to Lucifer about their deal. Dean explains to Jack that they made a deal – Lucifer gets Jack and Michael gets to rule the Earth with Sam also telling Jack Lucifer killed Maggie. As Lucifer denies the accusations, Jack uses his power to force Lucifer to tell the truth causing Lucifer to admit that he killed Maggie and that he liked it. Heart broken, a disgusted Jack tells Lucifer that he’s not his father and that he is a monster. Lucifer screams with rage and says that humans don’t matter. When Jack says that he is human, Lucifer says that is Jack’s problem and says if he can’t have Jack, he just needs his power. Lucifer produces an archangel blade from his sleeve and cuts Jack on the neck and sucks in a majority of Jack’s grace. Sam rushes to Jack as Lucifer, in a burst of bright power, disappears with Jack and Sam.

Dean calls out for Sam and looks stunned. When Michael tells them the Devil won, Castiel asks Michael how to stop Lucifer, Michael tells him with Lucifer “juiced up” on Jack’s grace, he is could end the whole universe if he put his mind to it. Michael says he would love to rip his brother apart, but his meat suit is too damaged. Dean explains to Michael that he is the sword, Michael’s perfect vessel. As Cas objects, Dean shuts him down, saying that Lucifer has Sam and Jack and Dean doesn’t have a choice. Dean tells Michael it’s a one-time deal, he is in charge and behind the wheel while Michael is the engine.

Lucifer materializes in a church and throws Jack to the ground and uses his power on Sam, intending to kill him. Lucifer taunts Sam, calling him “Daddy Sammy” protecting Jack, who has killed people. Sam says he doesn’t care and that Jack is family. Lucifer says that family doesn’t mean anything and will prove it by demanding that one of them kill the other. The survivor gets to walk out the door with a chance to save the world. Lucifer drops an archangel blade on the floor. When Sam refuses, Lucifer says he will kill them both, end all life in the Universe and remake it as he likes. Sam picks up the blade and tells Jack to kill him. Jack refuses, saying that he can’t stop Lucifer but that Sam can. Jack declares his love for Sam and all creation and begins to stab himself. Dean soon appears in a bright light, extending Michael’s wings, and holding an archangel blade. Lucifer realizes that Dean let Michael in, causing Dean to tell him it turns out they had something in common in both wanting to gut Lucifer. They quickly begin fighting, both on the ground and in the air. Dean drops the archangel blade as Lucifer begins to have the upper hand and Dean struggles. Telling him he doesn't need a blade, Lucifer begins to smite Dean, when Sam throws a blade to Dean, who plunges it into Lucifer's heart. Fires erupts from Lucifer’s eyes and in a fiery explosion, he falls to the ground, dead. His wings crackle and burn around his vessel on the church floor.

Sam and Dean rejoice that Lucifer is dead, with Sam telling Dean that he did it, but Dean corrects him that they all did it together. Suddenly, Dean bends forward in agony, groaning, and yells, “We had a deal!” Dean stands up, face blank, and says “Thanks for the suit.” Michael has taken over Dean’s body. Michael disappears as Sam and Jack stand in shock. In the Bunker, Mary and Bobby return to find Castiel sitting on the floor.

On a busy street, Michael walks down dressed in a new coat, three-piece suit, and a pea cap. He has a smirk on his face as he looks around at the humans on the street. His eyes glow blue as the episode ends on a freeze frame.

Quotes

Mary: So what are you gonna do now?

Bobby: Honestly, I got no clue. Everyone seems to be settling in okay in town. Ketch is out doing Ketch things. Rowena and Charlie are road tripping it through the Southwest.
Mary: That's trouble.

Bobby: Ginger trouble -- the worst kind. Anyways without an archangel, it's not like we can go back home. And I'm not sure I'd want to. I-I like it here.
Jack: Sam said you're dead. He said Michael killed you.
Lucifer: Yeah, I don't like to speak ill of people, but Sam is a big fat liar and he's a bad person and like, freakishly tall, so...
Jack: Tell me the truth.

Lucifer: She saw me when I was scouting out the Bunker. She saw me and she screamed, and then so I crushed her skull with my bare hands. And it was warm and wet, and I liked it.

Jack: You're not my father. You're a monster.
Castiel: How do we stop him?

Michael: You don't. After consuming the Nephilim's grace, Lucifer's juiced up. He's super-charged. He'll kill the boy, your brother. Hell, he could end the whole universe if he put his mind to it. And you thought I was bad.
Dean: No. No you beat him. I saw you.
Lucifer: When he was weaker, and I was stronger. Believe me, I'd love to rip my brother apart. But now in this banged up meatsuit not happening. This is the end, of everything.

Dean: No. What if -- what if you had your sword?
Lucifer: Wow. Daddy Sammy coming to the rescue. But your little Jackie, the nougat-loving boy that you had before, he's killed people. He's got lots of blood on his hands.

Sam: I don't care. He's family.

Lucifer: Ha! What's family done for anybody? My Dad left me, my brothers have tried to kill me. A lot. I'm gonna prove it to you.
Castiel: Dean, you can't.
Dean: Lucifer has Sam. He has Jack. Cas, I don't have a choice! If we do this, it's a one time deal. I'm in charge. You're the engine, but I'm behind the wheel.
Lucifer: Now I could -- I probably should -- execute you. I mean, really, really use my imagination. But I'm feeling generous today. So one of you is gonna walk out that door, and the other one will be laying dead on the ground. You choose.

Sam: No.

Lucifer: Or you could do that, and I can murder you both and end all life in the universe. Remake it in my image, better than Dad ever could. I'm thinkin' mm fire-breathing dragons, sassy talking robots. I might give humans another chance if they know their place and worship me, 'cause I've earned it. But hey, it'll probably take a few days to unravel the universe, Maybe, uh, 7, 10 days tops. So maybe, just maybe, one of you could stop me. Maybe. Well, let's see. Clock's ticking, guys.
Lucifer: You let my brother in.
Dean: Well, turns out, he and I have something in common. We both wanna gut your ass.
Jack: Is he?

Sam: He's dead.
Dean: Holy crap.
Sam: You did it.

Dean: No. No, we did it. We did it.
Sam: Michael.
Michael: Thanks for the suit.

Trivia & References

"Let the Good Times Roll" may be a reference to the jump blues song same name, or to the chorus to the 1978 single "Good Times Roll" by The Cars.
Sam: The ice caps are melting. People marching. A little bit of, uh, craziness in the movie world. Businessman billionaire mogul turned President, embroiled in yet another controversy. And that is pretty much the world -- uh, our world -- right now.

Bobby: Let me get this right -- the ice caps are melting, a movie where a girl goes all the way with a fish wins Best Picture, and that damn fool idjit from The Apprentice, is President.
Sam: Yeah.
Bobby: And you call where we come from 'Apocalypse World'.

The "Businessman billionaire mogul turned president" aka the "damn fool idjit from The Apprentice" is Donald Trump. These comments indicate that Donald Trump also existed in Apocalypse World. The "movie where a girl goes all the way with a fish" refers to Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water, which won Best Picture at the 2018 Academy Awards. Jim Beaver previously appeared in del Toro's 2015 film Crimson Peak.
Sam: How many are inside?

Castiel: I can hear three. Wait, maybe -- maybe four. They're talking about whether Kylie Jenner would make a good mother. The consensus is no.
Dean: Yeah, well, that's why I'm a Khloé man.

This conversation refers to the celebrity Kardashian family. Kylie is a half-sister to Kourtney, Kim, and Khloé Kardashian.
Castiel: We're FBI. I'm Agent Rowland. This is Agent Knowles and Agent Williams.
The aliases refer to the members of pop group Destiny's Child from the '90s and early '00s. The members are Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams.
Lucifer: I'm here for you, Jack. Because, you know, even though the Three Amigos -- Sam, Dean, and the other one -- won't admit it, you need me. You do, 'cause we're blood. And we're not human, no matter how much we pretend to be. See, humans are limited and fragile. And I'll admit, they bring out the worst in me, I gotta say. It seems like, you know, no matter how much you try to do right around them, something always goes wrong. Follow?
Three Amigos is a 1986 comedy starring Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short as three movie stars mistaken for real life heroes. Rowena referred to Sam, Dean, and Cas as the "Three Amigos" in 13.21 Beat the Devil.
Jack: What do we do?

Lucifer: Leave. I mean there's a whole universe out there, buddy. Planets. Stars. Galaxies. Why should we stay here on Earth when we can go anywhere else? Heck, everywhere else.
Jack: Like, um, like Star Wars?
Lucifer: Exactly like Star Wars. You want a lightsaber? I can make you a lightsaber. Heck, I can make you a Wookiee.

The lightsaber is the weapon of the Jedi knights in the Star Wars universe. Wookiees are a species of giant hairy humanoids from the planet Kashyyyk. The most famous Wookiee is the smuggler-turned-resistance-fighter Chewbacca. Jack previously showed an affinity for Star Wars in 13.04 The Big Empty.
Michael: I'm not perfect. Yes, I made mistakes. But second time's the charm. And you Dean Winchester, will be the first life that I take in this world, first soul I save. Some would consider that an honor.

Dean: Well, as Shakespeare once said, eat me, dickbag.

There is no record of Shakespeare using the the phrase "Eat me, dickbag", but he did have an extensive repertoire of insults.
Jack: It's all right, okay? He's here to help.

Bobby: He is?
Lucifer: You know it, Longmire.

Walt Longmire is a character in a series of novels by Craig Johnson, and a TV series. Longmire is a sheriff, and dresses in a manner not dissimilar to Bobby. Jim Beaver appeared on Longmire in the 2013 season 2 episode "Natural Order".
The episode ending on the freeze frame of Dean/Michael's glowing angelic eyes is a reference to the end of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video.

Minutiae

Sam mentions that Donald Trump is the current president. It is not explained what became of President Jefferson Rooney.
Dean: We're gonna make mistakes. Nobody's perfect. Right? But we can get better. Every day, we can get better.
Dean is giving Jack the same advice he and Sam got from Father Lucca Camilleri in 13.15 A Most Holy Man.
Lucifer: Yeah, uh, Jack, about this, uh, resurrection stuff, it's not always a great idea because, uh, you know people come back... different.

Jack: Well, Sam didn't.
Lucifer: Right, well Sam's always been different. Some would say 'special.' No offense.

In 2.22 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part Two Azazel questions Dean if the newly-resurrected Sam was 100% Sam. In the episode and subsequent season 3, Sam occasionally exhibited a more brutal mentality when it came to hunting. This possible plot line was seemingly dropped due to the season 3 writer's strike shortening the season.
Dean: I am your sword. Your perfect vessel. With me you'd be stronger than you've ever been.
According to Zachariah, Dean is the "Sword of Michael," meaning that Dean is Michael's true vessel. When Lucifer is first released from the Cage, Michael pursues Dean to be his vessel so that he can defeat Lucifer. Dean agrees to be Michael's vessel in 5.18 Point of No Return; as Michael begins to appear, Dean reneges and kills Zachariah. He tells Sam that he changed his mind because he didn't want to let him down. Their half-brother Adam Milligan is taken as the vessel instead, and ends up being dragged into the cage by Sam when he is possessed by Lucifer.
Lucifer's death happens in a church. In 4.22 Lucifer Rising, Lucifer is freed from the Cage inside of St. Mary's Convent.
This episode is the first to show an angel's wings actually burning into the ground as seen when Lucifer dies.
