Donatello is cooking in his kitchen, making cookies and boiling pasta. While he is juggling cookie dough, the door bell rings. He answers it, a man in black with no face seen in in front of him. He asks him what he wants and the man pushes his way into his house. The man then ties him to his dining room table with ropes. He is injected with a needle in his neck, he screams in pain.

Dean is playing a game. Jack is in the kitchen making jiffy pop. Mary

enters the room. They can hear Dean yell because he is not winning at the game of Mousetrap. Mary said that this was his favorite game as a child. She asks Jack how he is doing. He comments on how every one keeps asking him that. It's getting annoying. She offers herself if he wants to talk. They leave to join Dean.

Mary hands Dean his cellphone, he had a missed call. It's Donatello Dean

puts the message on speaker phone. He is in distress and talking in another language. Dean calls Sam, he gets voice mail. Mary and Dean decide to go to Donatello's house. Jack is to wait for Sam, and have him call Dean on his spare.

In a small restaurant Cas is sitting at a table. In walks Sister Jo she

sits in front of Cas. He hands her a box with a pair of earrings. He tells her they are probably cursed, but nothing an angel couldn't handle. He tells her he needs her to contact God. She laughs. Cas reminds her he knows what she did to get demoted and that she was Joshua's right hand man. Joshua spoke to God and he needed to get a hold of him to restore Jacks soul. He depleted it when he killed Michael.

Sister Jo refuses to help him. She explains that Joshua didn't speak to God,

God spoke to him. He takes back the box of earrings. She then speaks of a rumor that Joshua calling God and God picked up.

Back at the compound. Sam is talking to Dean on his cell. He thinks that

Donatello was speaking in ancient Hebrew and they are working on interp- erting the message. Dean tells them to hurry. In the car Mary and Dean are talking of how everyone is stressed. She wished she was around more and is grateful for every day she spends with them.

Sam is listening to the message. He knows it is from the Bible, Peter 5:8.

Be sober be vigilant, because your adversary, the devil, has a roaring lion walking about, seeking whom he may devour.

Mary and Dean arrive at Donatello's house. They enter and go into his

dinning room. There is a cell phone replaying his message. Nick walks out of the kitchen and says, “Good you made it.” Dean handcuffs him, where is Donatello Mary goes into the kitchen. Dean asks how he got out of jail. Nick tells him how he escaped and some people died. Mary returns with a hypodermic needle she found in the trash. Dean asks what he did. Nick said he shot him up with Valium and in a day his organs with begin to shut down. He jesters to the phone. There is a live stream of him there. They look and he is seen tied up on the floor. Nick says, “If you can find him you can save him.” Dean points his gun at Nick and asks where is he? Mary asks him what he wants. He wants to talk.

A pick-up pulls onto a road. Cas and Sister Jo exit. They are at

Orlando's Emporium. A man is seated at a desk. He says they are closed. Jo says even for us, Methuselah, she knows his angel name. Cas explains their friendship with Joshua. He was a roommate with Joshua. Cas threatens him if he doesn't help them. Cas'e eyes turn blue. He raises and tells them that the object Joshua used to call God is somewhere around here. They are angels, they can find it. Jo and Cas begin to look for it.

At the compound, Jack and Sam are walking in a hallway. Dean and

Mary are walking in with Nick, handcuffed. Sam grabs Nick and slams him against the wall. Dean stops him. He says, “Not yet.” Sam leaves upset. Dean takes him to their interrogation room. The three of them are then talking about how he was just waiting for them. They know Nick didn't know Donatello Dean says that Lucifer did. They have the antidote, Prussian Blue to take with them. They need to find him in time. Sam suggests, hacking the live feed, but it would take a while. They decided to talk with Nick. Dean won't let Sam in the room with him, he is afraid that he will waste him.

Sam tells Mary he feels responsible for the police deaths. He wanted

to give Nick a chance. Mary assures him that Nick made his choices on his own. She tells him he is a good man, that is why she is so proud of him.

Cas and Jo continue to look for the object. She complains when Cas got

her silk shirt full of dust. They speak of her demotion. She believed in heaven. When she visited Earth she saw how it was no paradise. So much despair. She asked Joshua why God does not help people. He said he doesn't meddle. Cas says, “So you perform miracles for the money.” She says he does them for herself. She is happy and he sounds like he is lonely, because we are alone. Cas points out the he meddled when he resurrected him. Joshua told her how millions die everyday and he does nothing. What does that say about him.

Dean is punching Nick. He is tied to a chair within a circle with symbols.

Dean punches him again, he asks where is Donatello? Nick says to Dean he was a prince when he was Micheal and now he is a broken hunter. Dean asks him what's it all about. He wants to see his son, Jack.

Dean tells Sam, Mary and Jack what Nick wants, Jack. Mary says, no.

Jack says, he isn't afraid of him. Dean says, Nick is cracked. Jack reminds them that Donatello helped him, he wants to help him.

Jack enters the room. He asks where his friend is. Nick calls himself,

Pop. Jacks tells him his father was a monster and to answer his question. Nick tells him how he knows he has no soul. Jack replies, yes he does and gets closer to Nick. He then hits Jack with his head, making Jack bleed from his nose. He has bled on Nicks white shirt. He then heals himself. Nick asks, if he's good. His eyes glow orange. Jack exits the room. The three are waiting outside the door. He says, Nick will show us where he is.

Cas and Sister Jo continue to look for the object. She is upset she just

stepped on a rat. She says that he is doing this so he doesn't have to tell Sam and Dean the truth, that Jacks soul is gone. Jo grabs her handbag when she does, Cas sees it. It's the necklace. It glows in the presence of God. Methuselah says, that Joshua forged it after his fall. Cas takes and holds it in his hand, calling on God. Nothing. Methuselah said, the same thing happened for Joshua, nothing.

The Impala arrives at the building where Donatello is. Sam and Dean

threaten Nick in the back handcuffed. Meanwhile, Cas and Jo leave the store. He gives the earrings to her and offers her a ride. She takes a cab.

At the compound, Mary is going through a box of Donatella's things.

Jack sees that hypodermic needle and holds it in his hand. He says it has angel grace in it.

Dean is entering the facility where the prophet is. Nick begins to

antagonize Sam as Lucifer once did. A phone call comes from mother. He has to exit the vehicle, Nick is singing, Sammy Boy. Dean finds Donatello, and unties him. Nick is seen taking a piece of metal out of his arm to unlock his cuffs. Sam pulls him out of the car and points his gun at him, asking why he injected Donatello with angel grace. He says, that prophets are like CB radios, you can change the frequency Sam knows that it is Lucifer that he is trying to communicate with. He is in the Empty. Nick tells him, that he is awake. Donatello told him how to bring him back.

Flashback to when Nick a first visited his house. He needs his sons

blood, Jack to bring him back. Nick says to Sam, you know no one stays dead anymore. Even demons want him back. They got him the grace he needed.

Nick and Sam fight. Sam gets into the Impala and honks the horn.

Dean hears it. He has to fight off demons inside. He uses the angel blade to kill the two of them. Sam is hit by Nick with a rock in his hand. Sam strangles Nick, till he passes out. Then Nick takes the advantage with the stone, hitting Sam several times.

Donatello and Dean leave the building, running. Sam is hurt badly,

laying by the Impala. He is gasping for air, Dean puts a cloth on the left side of his head. Dean calls Mary and tells her that Nick played them and how bad Sam is.

Nick is seen grabbing a man out of a pick-up truck stopped at a

stop sign. He throws him to the ground and speeds away. He arrives at a cabin in the woods. He breaks in and looks for objects to use. He finds a knife, cast iron pot and salt. He kneels down in a circle of salt, puts his shirt with Jacks blood in the pot He cuts his hand and let is drip onto the shirt. He lights the shirt.

Jack back at the compound stops and bends over. He says his

blood feels on fire. Jack knows he got his blood and is using it. Mary said, this was about you. He needed your blood. Nick is seen kneeling in front of the pot saying an incantation to invoke Lucifer. Jack tells Mary he needs to use his powers to stop him. She agrees. A black goo appears with wings. It is Lucifer, it reaches with it's hand to Nick and almost touches him. Jack appears with Mary, he stops it with a jester with his hand. It goes away. Nick is furious. Then Jack sets him on fire from within. His face is seen scared with burns. He is dead.

Dean is kneeling in front of Sam. He is gasping of breath. He gets

Sam to count with him, he does then loses consciousness. Jack looks at Mary and says I had to do it. She asks him to help Sam. He appears at the scene with Sam and heals him. Sam gasps and gets up. He asks how his mom is, Jack told them she is fine. He says, everything will be fine.

Mary is seen coming out of the cabin. Jack appears. He tells her

that he healed Sam and wants to explain why he did what he did. Nick was a bad person and he had to be stopped. She tells him to take her home. He asks, if it was okay, what he did. She replies, the Jack she know wouldn't had done that. He says, Sam and Dean were grateful. They didn't know what he had done. He wants to know if she will tell them. She responds saying, he needs help and they can help. We are family. Jack tells her to leave him alone. With his hands covering his ears, he is in distress. She wants to help him. The screen goes black and he calls out Mary.

  • "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" by B. J. Thomas
(sung by Donatello as he is cooking and plays when he is attacked)
  • "Maybe Tomorrow" by Jackie Stewart
(playing in the diner where Castiel meets Sister Jo)

Mary: How about you? Feeling better?

Jack: Everybody keeps asking me that.
Mary: We're family. It's our job.

Jack: Well, it's annoying.
Sister Jo: The Winchesters -- they don't know you're here do they?

Castiel: Why do you say that?

Sister Jo: Oh, I don't know, just the general reek of ill-conceived lone-wolf desperation.
Mary: But I should've been here more. But I know how I am. I can be closed off and hard.

Dean: Yeah, well, that's where I get it from.

Mary: Listen. I just need you to know I'm grateful for every day I get to spend with you and Sam.
Mary: No one's making excuses, but -- you gave him a chance because you felt for him because you're a good man. You are. It's one of the reasons I'm so proud of you.
Sister Jo: We're all lonely, because we're all alone. From ant to lion to human to angel. Every last one of us.

Castiel: You know, He does meddle. God reached down, and He brought me back to life.

Sister Jo: So He saves one angel and watches millions of people die screaming, every day. What does that say about Him?
Nick: I get you, Dean. You and me, we're almost like brothers, you know. Michael, you, Lucifer me -- we both know what it's like to be hog-tied to a nuclear warhead, man.
Dean: Look, you try anything funny, Sammy's gonna shoot you. Anything happens to me --

Nick: Wait. Let me guess. Sammy's gonna shoot me.

Sam: Yeah, to start.
Sam: You -- you always, always put -- You always put me first. Your whole life.
Jack: Mary. Nick he was a bad person, a killer. I had to stop him.

Mary: Not like that.

Jack: He deserved it.
Mary: If Sam and Dean saw what you did, they would be as worried as I am.

Jack: Are you gonna tell them?
Mary: You need help, we'll help you. We're your family.
Jack: You can't.

Mary: We care about you, Jack.

Trivia & References

Dean is seen setting up a game of Mouse Trap, a kid's game that was invented in the 1960s. In the game, players must construct a complicated Rube-Goldberg-like machine in order to capture their opponents' tokens (which are mice). The game parallels the complex scheme Nick puts in place in order to be able to summon Lucifer.
Castiel: Jack killed Michael.

Sister Jo: Good night, sweet prince.

"Good night, sweet prince" is one of the lines spoken by Horatio in Act V of Shakespeare's Hamlet.
"Now cracks a noble heart. Goodnight, sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!"
Castiel: No. You'll tell me, or I'll burn this place to the ground and you with it.

Methuselah: Kiddo, how old am I? Go for it. Put me out of my misery.

It is implied that Methuselah may be the Biblical Methuselah, the grandfather of Noah and according to the Bible the longest-lived person in history, having died at the age of 969 in the year of the great flood.
Sister Jo: Even if we found Joshua's Batphone, God's not gonna care.
Batphone has become a term for a priority phone number. It originated in the 1960s Batman TV series. In that series, Batman had a propensity for adding "Bat" to every object he owned.
Nick: He loved you. You know that? He did. I felt it. He loved you so much and you broke his heart. Of course, I'm talking about the old you. You with a soul. Yeah. Kermit the Prophet told me all about your sitch. What's that like, not having a soul? Must be relaxing.
"Kermit the Prophet" refers to Donatello, and in this context comparing him to a muppet implies he is not very bright.
Sam: You're trying to communicate with someone? Who?

Nick: Search your feelings, Sam.

A reference to Star Wars, where the Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi gives this advice to Luke when he asks who his sister is in Return of the Jedi

Nick communicating with Lucifer through Donatello mirrors Azazel contacting Lucifer in the Cage through a dead nun in 4.22 Lucifer Rising.
Nick: Come on, Sam. Nobody stays dead anymore. You know that.
A meta reference to the fact that many long-thought-dead characters have made reappearances on Supernatural in recent seasons. Also, it references the fact that characters in general tend not to stay dead.
At the end of 14.16 Don't Go in the Woods, Jack promised Sam and Dean not to use his powers without permission. He only uses them in this episode after Mary gives him the okay to get to Nick and save Sam.
In 14.11 Damaged Goods, Sam tells Nick he can "burn" for all the death and pain he's caused. In this episode, Jack kills Nick by burning him alive, from the inside out.
