Dean introduces himself and Sam as "Detectives Landis and Dante." John Landis directed An American Werewolf in London, and Joe Dante directed The Howling - both 1981 werewolf horror films.
Kurt Mueller is initially suspected to be the werewolf. The Turkish word kurt means wolf.
Dean: Think he's our Dog-Faced Boy?
- Fedor Jeftichew - better known as Jo-Jo the Dog-Faced Boy - was a famous Russian sideshow performer brought to the U.S. by P.T. Barnum in 1884.

- Cujo is a Stephen King book (and later movie) about a rabid St. Bernard named Cujo that kills people.

- Sam and Dean's game of Rock, Paper, Scissors is referenced multiple times throughout the series. Dean always "throws" scissors, which Sam knows, so Sam always "throws" rock to win the game. See 6.17 My Heart Will Go On for an alternate universe reversal of this constant of the Winchesters' lives.
Madison is the second love interest of Sam's to die, the first being his girlfriend, Jessica Moore, who is killed by Brady in 1.01 Pilot. See also Peen of Death.
