Synopsis

Crowley approaches Dean and Sam with a job. When Dean is reluctant to listen to him, Crowley reminds him that he owns Sam and can send him back to hell at any time; on the other hand, if they play along and manage to bring him an Alpha, Crowley will give Sam back his soul. Though reluctant to work for Crowley, they don't see any other choice.

He sends Dean and Sam to Buffalo, New York to investigate what appears to be a werewolf attack. When they arrive, they learn about another attack--so far, both a landlord (Erik Gieszelmann) and a dockworker (Ronald Garrigan) have been found with their chests ripped open and their hearts missing. Sam does some research and discovers what the two men have in common: Cal Garrigan. If anyone threatens Cal, they end up dead. They follow him and wait for him to turn into a werewolf, but an entire night passes without him changing. Then, when Cal is murdered in the same fashion as the other victims, their next suspect is Cal's girlfriend, Mandy. Sam is ready to take her in, but Dean is reluctant to capture and take her to Crowley without being sure of her culpability. He goes to see the scene of Cal's murder and do some more research while Sam keeps watch on Cal and Mandy's house. Although Dean doesn't find anything, Sam sees the family dog, Lucky, change into a man, put on clothes, and leave the house.

Sam follows him and sees him talk to another man in a park. When he approaches, though, the man smells him, turns back into Lucky, and tries to run. Before Sam can catch up to him, Lucky is hit by a car and the driver loads him into the back to take him to an animal shelter. Sam, based on information from Bobby, calls Dean and tells him that they are dealing with a skinwalker posing as a dog.

Sam and Dean take Lucky from the animal shelter and bind him in rope and Silver chains to restrain him. It transpires that the man was homeless when he was approached and recruited to become a skinwalker--he was told that being bitten would make him strong and fast. Lucky reveals that there are about thirty skinwalkers who have been recruited and are living with families as pets. On a signal from their pack leader, they will infect their families, thus recruiting more skinwalkers. He tells Sam and Dean that there are packs in many other towns, but he knows nothing of the Alpha Skinwalker.

Lucky leads Sam and Dean to the Pack Leader, but he has kidnapped Mandy and her son and threatens to kill them unless Lucky turns them. Sam and Dean open fire, and all the Skinwalkers are killed except for Lucky, who, although shot with a Silver bullet, escapes.

Lucky, in human form, goes to visit Mandy and tells her how he appreciated her kindness, but she tells him to leave. Lucky transforms into a dog and dejectedly leaves.

Quotes

Crowley: Is that Bobby Singer? Give him a kiss for me.
Crowley (to Sam): You'd sell your brother for a dollar right now if you really needed a soda.
Crowley: Werewolves turning on the full moon -- so '09.
Crime scene tech: What are the feds doing here?
Sam: Oh, we're specialists. They call us in to answer the questions of mouth-breathing dick monkeys.
Dean: Now, we can either do this the easy way [holds up clothes] or the hard way [holds up dog chain].

Sam: [chuckles]
Dean: [glares at Sam]

Sam: What? Soul or not, that's funny.
Lucky: Go to hell.
Sam: Already been. Didn't agree with me.
Dean: You say you're "Just folks," Yeah? That -- that you like baseball and apple pie or whatever. But truth is, I don't know what you are - 'cause you're not Sam.

Sam: Dean, come on.

Dean: I mean, it's your gigantor body and and maybe your brain, but it's not you. So just...stop pretending. Do us both a favor.

Trivia & References

The Title of the episode is also the name of a 1989 animated film.
Sam: Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria.
This line is originally from Bill Murray as Dr Venkman in [1]. (Watch clip)
Dean: You're a sleeper cell.
A sleeper cell is a team of operatives (usually spies or terrorists) that lies dormant in a target population living out seemingly ordinary everyday lives until they are given instructions to act and carry out their mission.
Sam tells Dean that he still likes the same Music he always has. This is probably a bit of an injoke by the writers as while much is made of Dean's love of classic rock, Sam's musical tastes are a mystery. The only time we get an idea of his musical tastes is in 4.01 Lazarus Rising when Dean is appalled to find an mp3 player in the Impala, which is playing a song by jason Manns.

At Comic Con 2007, Kripke said Sam listened to "whatever cool modern music is. I don’t know any of them because I don’t listen to anything after 1980..." See Music for more.
The Winchesters use the alises Agents Holt and Wilson. John Holt and Delroy Wilson are Jamacian reggae singer/songwriters.
Sam: She still had time to wolf out, Dean. The last werewolf was in bed, with me, and she wolfed out.
Sam is referring to Madison in 2.17 Heart, who transformed into a Werewolf after she and Sam have sex.
Sam: Just got the low down from Bobby. They can change anywhere, anytime. Skinwalkers infect you with a single bite. Otherwise, they're basically a werewolf cousin -- Silver will drop 'em, they chow hearts like snausages.

Skinwalkers were the suspected culprits in 1.02 Wendigo and 1.06 Skin, however the creatures there turn out to be a Wendigo and Shapeshifter respectively.

Snausages are a brand of dog treat.
Sam: I'd double-cross us.

Dean: Thanks, Dexter. That's reassuring.

Dexter is the serial killer protagonist in a series of books starting with Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay by and a TV Series called Dexter on Showtime.
Sam:...That's the guy Lucky met in the park. And there's El Jefe.

El Jefe is a Spanish colloquialism for The Boss, ro Teh Chief.
