Synopsis

Crowley tortures and kills the Alpha Shapeshifter because he won't tell him the location of Purgatory. Meanwhile, Dean and Sam are still providing Crowley with monsters. They hand over a rugaru to a few of Crowley's demons and head back to their base of operations, a dilapidated house, where Dean tells Sam that he's sick of working for Crowley because it doesn't seem to be getting them anywhere. While they argue, demons get the jump on them. When they wake up, they're tied to chairs and Meg is there. She wants them to tell her where Crowley is, but they don't know, and Sam just laughs at her when she threatens them. He tells Dean not to worry about Meg: she can't kill them because she needs them. She and other "Lucifer loyalists" are on the run from Crowley, who wants to be uncontested in his reign over Hell, and Meg wants to find Crowley so she can kill him with Ruby's knife.

Sam makes a deal with Meg. He and Dean will help her find and kill Crowley if she'll help them get some information out of him. They don't tell her what it is they want to know, but Sam is hoping to find out how to get his soul back. Dean is unhappy with the deal, but Sam tells him that they'll kill Meg and all the other demons once they're done with Crowley. Sam realizes that they'll need some help, though, so he tricks Castiel into appearing by making him think that they have found the Ark of the Covenant. When Castiel tells Sam that he's too busy with the war over Heaven to help, Sam reminds Castiel that he owes him and tells him that if he doesn't help, he'll hunt Castiel down and kill him. Castiel eventually capitulates and tries to locate Crowley with a ritual. The ritual fails, and so the three of them go to the Campbell Compound to look for information on Crowley's location.

At the compound they encounter Samuel, who refuses to help them find Crowley. Dean asks him why he won't help them and why he's been working for Crowley, and they discover that Crowley promised Samuel that he would resurrect Mary. Dean tells him that it's a bad idea to bring her back from the dead, and Samuel calls Dean a hypocrite. Eventually, though, Samuel comes around, and he tells them where he's been bringing creatures to Crowley. Sam, Dean, and Castiel meet up with Meg and her demons so that they can go to Crowley's prison together. As they get ready to leave, Castiel tells Dean that he's not sure they should return Sam's soul to his body. His soul has been in Lucifer's Cage with Lucifer and Michael for over a year, and they have no idea what sort of torture he's suffered. Castiel tells Dean that Sam may be broken if he gets his soul back, and Sam overhears their conversation.

Using Samuel's information, they find Crowley's prison and Castiel helps them break inside, where they see various monsters, including the Djinn Brigitta, locked in cells. Eventually, they are pursued by the hellhounds that guard the prison. Meg tries to leave her meatsuit, but is trapped inside it, so she tells them to take Ruby's knife and find Crowley. She then kisses Castiel and takes his angel blade to hold off the hellhounds while they go on. Dean, Sam, and Castiel leave her behind, but are quickly attacked. Samuel uses an angel banishing sigil to get rid of Castiel, and demons grab and imprison Dean and Sam. Dean is horrified by Samuel's betrayal, and he tells Samuel that once he escapes, he's going to find and kill him. Dean is then taken to a room to be fed to Ghouls while Sam is left in his cell. Dean fights off the ghouls long enough for Sam to escape his cell (using a devil's trap drawn in his own blood) and help kill them.

Meanwhile, Meg has been captured and is being tortured by Christian, whose body is still possessed by a demon. While Christian is distracted, Dean comes up behind him and kills him with Ruby's knife, and he and Sam free Meg. They then lure Crowley into the room and catch him in a devil's trap. Sam demands his soul back, and Meg tortures him until Crowley admits that he can't get it. He also tells Sam the same thing that Castiel said: Sam's soul is likely broken and will destroy him if he gets it back. Disgusted, Sam tells Meg to go ahead and kill Crowley, and Dean hands her Ruby's knife. She tries to kill Crowley, but he gets the knife from her and uses it to break the devil's trap. Before he can retaliate, however, Castiel appears holding a bag of bones that he says belong to Crowley. He asks Crowley if he can restore Sam's soul, and, when Crowley admits that he can't, Castiel burns his bones without hesitation, killing him. While they are distracted, Meg flees.

Outside Crowley's prison, Dean thanks Castiel for his help. Castiel admits that the war in Heaven is not going well and that he'd rather be on Earth most of the time. He then tells Sam that they'll find another way to get his soul back before leaving to take care of the monsters still in the prison. Dean tries to reassure Sam, too, but Sam tells him that he doesn't think he wants his soul back after all.

Castiel: Why are we working with these abominations?
Meg: Keep talking dirty. Makes my meatsuit all dewy.

Castiel: Sam’s soul has been locked in the cage with Michael and Lucifer for more than a year. And they have nothing to do but take their frustrations out on him. You understand? If we try to force that mutilated thing down Sam’s gullet, we have no idea what will happen. It could be catastrophic.

Dean: You mean he dies.

Castiel: I mean, he doesn’t. Paralysis. Insanity. Psychic pain so profound that he’s locked inside himself for the rest of his life.

Meg: Knock yourself out. It’s a host body. Some girl from Cheboygan, moved to LA to be an actress. It’s probably not even the worst thing that ever happened to her.

Dean: Well, she’s smart, I’ll give her that. I was gonna kill her, too. ’Course, I’d have given you an hour with her first.

Trivia & References

The title of the episode is reference to the 1974 movie Caged Heat which is a classic in the "women in prison" exploitation genre.

Crowley: Sorry. But your exceptional good looks aren’t gonna buy you any mercy. I suggest you talk. What should we use next? Speculum? Or something more exotic?

A speculum is a medical tool for investigating body cavities.

Crowley: My sources are unimpeachable. You’re the father of your entire species. You’re really not pulling off this dumb-blonde act. I hope you appreciate just how much effort I’ve gone to to find something that can actually hurt you. My tinkering has cost several lesser shifters their lives. Iridium. Rarer than hell. Would’ve been cheaper to drop a castle on you, but I think we all agree – worth it. So, you start talking or I start chopping off all the bits that stick out.

Iridium is an element in the platinum metal family. It is the second densest element in the Periodic Table of Elements and the most corrosion-resistant metal, as high as 2000° Celsius. It is also one of the rarest elements in the Earth's crust, yielding an annual production and consumption of about three tons.

Sam: Castiel, we need you. It’s important. Cas, we found something. It’s this gold box. Apparently Nazis were after it back in the day, someone opened it and their face melted off. I think it’s – ready for this – the Ark of the Covenant. Yeah. So...

Castiel: I’m here, Sam. Where is the box?
Sam: I can’t believe you fell for that. That was the plot of Raiders, idiot.

Sam is referring to Raiders of the Lost Ark - the first of the Indiana Jones movies.

The porn movie Castiel is watching features a classic porn trope commonly known as Pizza Boy Special Delivery.

Meg: Remember me? I sure remember you, Clarence.

In 5.10 Abandon All Hope..., Meg called Castiel Clarence in reference to the movie It's a Wonderful Life, in which the angel Clarence shows Jimmy Stewart that life is worth living, and then finally gets his wings and goes to Heaven.

Dean: Well, breaking into monster Gitmo is not exactly a two-for-one in the champagne room.

Gitmo, aka Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, is located on 45 square miles of land and water at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba which the United States leased for use as a coaling (fueling) station following the Cuban-American Treaty of 1903. Since 2002, the naval base has contained a military prison, the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, for persons alleged to be unlawful combatants captured in Afghanistan and later in Iraq. The alleged mistreatment of the prisoners, and their denial of protection under the Geneva Conventions, has been a source of international controversy.

A champagne room is a specialized VIP Room service offered by strip clubs where a customer can purchase time (usually in half-hour increments) with an exotic dancer in a private room on the premises.

Dean: Then you figure it out, Cas. Come on. I mean, the guy’s a frigging replicant. He needs his soul. Look, we get it back. And if there are complications, then we will figure out a way to deal with those, too.

A replicant is a bio-engineered or bio-robotic being created in the film Blade Runner. A central question of the movie is whether or not replicants can be considered human or if they have a soul, and is a broader theme about artificial intelligence (e.g., HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey) in numerous science fiction novels and movies.

Meg: I didn’t know this was gonna happen. Bright side: them chewing up my meatsuit ought to buy you a few seconds. Seacrest out.

Dean: Hiya, Crowley. How’s tricks?

Crowley: Above your pay grade. Been working. Big things. Alas, you’ll be too dead to participate.

How's tricks? is an informal greeting equivalent to asking "how are you?"

Crowley: Yes. And I have to say, best purchase I’ve made since Dick Cheney.

Dick Cheney served as the 46th Vice President of the United States from 2001 to 2009 under George W. Bush. Previous references to Cheney in the series include Dean introducing Samuel as "Father Cheney" in 4.03 In the Beginning, and the demon Casey telling Dean that Cheney has "a parking spot reserved for him downstairs" in 3.04 Sin City.

Samuel: Don’t think there’s gonna be a next time.

Dean: Whatever gets you through the night.

"Whatever Gets You Thru the Night" is a 1974 song by John Lennon. Coincidentally (or perhaps not), this episode aired on December 3, 2010 - five days before the 30th anniversary of Lennon's death. The episode also aired five days after November 28, which marks the anniversary of Lennon performing the song together with Elton John at Madison Square Garden for Thanksgiving 1974, his last major public performance.

Dean: Alright, alright. Shawshank’s a great flick, but let’s skip the shower scene, huh?

The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American prison drama film adapted from the Stephen King novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption." Incidentally, Mark Rolston, who played Dean's nemesis Alastair in 4.09 I Know What You Did Last Summer and 4.10 Heaven and Hell, also had a role in The Shawshank Redemption, and was most famously known for this "shower scene", in which he approached the male lead character for sex.

Crowley: You that bossy in Heaven? Hear you’re losing out to Raphael. The whole affair makes Vietnam look like a roller derby. Hey, what’s in the gift bag?

A reference to the Vietnam War, a Cold War military conflict that occurred in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1 November 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975. This war followed the First Indochina War and was fought between North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the US and other allied nations.

Roller Derby is a sport played on roller skates, which while featuring a lot of physical contact is rarely fatal.

Minutiae

The scene with Dean and the ghouls was originally scripted to introduce a new monster into the show's mythology. According to writer Brett Matthews in the official companion for season 6, the ghouls were originally going to be a "big-ass Lovecraftian tentacle." In the scene, Dean was to be thrown in an underground sandpit, and realize he is in a monster pen when he finds human bones while trying to escape. At that point a tentacle would have grabbed him and dragged him under the sand, like the final product, the scene would have ended with Sam arriving to save Dean.

Crowley: Castiel, haven’t seen you all season. You the cavalry now?

This episode marks the first time since 5.21 Two Minutes to Midnight where Castiel and Crowley were in the same scene. An example of breaking the fourth wall.
