Dean and Sam arrive in Prosperity, Indiana, to investigate two unusual deaths: a real estate agent named Wendy Goodson was fried by a hyperactive hair dryer in a salon, and an architect named Carl Dunlop was boiled in a hot tub. When Dean questions Wendy's hairdresser, he learns that there's no way the hair dryer could have gotten hot enough to kill her, but when he searches behind one of the machines, Dean finds an ancient coin. He and Sam think it may be a hex talisman, or magical coin, but are unclear on its origins. Before they can do any further research, Dewey Stevens, owner of Dewey Stevens Construction, is killed in a port-a-potty by an industrial nail gun operating without power. Dean finds another coin in the port-a-potty, and Sam's research reveals that all three victims were involved in a shopping center project that fell through not long ago. The only person involved in the project and still alive is the developer, Don Stark.
They leave the construction site and get a call from Bobby, whose research reveals that the coin is Romanian Cyrillic and from the 15th to the 19th century. Still unsure of who is behind the killings, they go to question Don Stark about his three dead colleagues, posing as FBI agents. They meet his assistant, Jennifer Klein, and after she leaves on errands they learn that Don and his wife, Maggie Stark, are currently separated. He had an affair with Wendy Goodson, and Maggie left him after she discovered it. Sam's snooping reveals that her side of their closet is empty except for a broken high heeled shoe, a pendant, a box of strange ingredients, and notes and papers that contain spells and other evidence of witchcraft. Their next stop is to investigate Maggie, who they suspect of being the witch behind the strange deaths.
Maggie is leasing another home during her separation from Don, and Dean breaks in to search for clues. While he's inside, he finds an altar with more coins and bloodied pictures of the three victims. There is also an unmarked picture of Don's attractive assistant, Jennifer Klein. Dean grabs the picture and escapes just before Maggie returns home, thanks to Sam's misdirection. Certain that Margaret is the witch and Jennifer is her next victim, they rush to Jennifer's house. She's been baking coconut cupcakes for Don, but when she takes a bite out of one she sees a beating heart in the center and starts to cough up blood. She's still coughing when Dean and Sam break down her door and start searching frantically for the magical coin that must be nearby. Sam finds the coin hidden in the kitchen and shoots it with his gun just in time to dissipate the spell and save Jennifer. Afterwards, Jennifer is in shock, and they tell her that she needs to end things with Don and leave town. Jennifer is confused, and Dean and Sam are surprised to learn that she and Don were never involved.
Meanwhile, the Margaret Stark Charity Foundation is preparing an an art auction for children's charities. Maggie is at the center of the activity, as is her friend Sue. Don arrives and wants to talk to Margaret about what she's been doing. He wants her to stop killing people—the FBI are investigating. She tells him that Sam and Dean are hunters, not FBI, and that she'll deal with them. They continue to argue until Don leaves, angry. As he goes, he sees his commemorative bust, which is positioned in front of the building, crack and break into pieces. He turns and looks up at a window in the building, where Maggie stands, watching him.
Dean and Sam get a call from Bobby, who's found a ritual that should be able to kill Don and Maggie. One of the ingredients is chicken feet, which a disgusted Sam reports are starting to go bad. Apparently, the butcher and everyone else in town has been experiencing power outages and burst pipes. Trying to ignore the smell of the chicken feet, they prepare the ritual. Meanwhile, Maggie's charity auction takes a turn for the worst. Don shows up and uses his own witchcraft to first scare Sue, then decapitate her with a flying serving tray. He also melts all the paint of the paintings that are up for auction. Dean and Sam show up at the auction in the aftermath and quickly determine that Don is a witch, too, and they're all caught in the middle of a witches' feud. They leave for Maggie's house.
When Sam and Dean arrive at Maggie's house, Don and Maggie are already there, arguing. They try to use Bobby's ritual to kill the witches, but it fails, and Maggie teases them about using sub-par chicken's feet before Don initiates a spell to kill them. Before they can finish the spell, Dean interrupts with an attempt to mend Maggie and Don's relationship. Unfortunately, the couples' issues go back as far as the Renaissance, and it takes some time, and tossing around of Dean and Sam, before they finally kiss and make up.
With Don and Maggie's feud over, Dean and Sam head back to their motel room. They start to unload their gear when the Leviathan Chet appears. While they've been dealing with the case in Prosperity, he has been hot on their tail with orders to kill them. Dean shoots him in the chest, but it has no effect: he leaks some black fluid and the bullet falls out. He taunts them and then starts tossing them around the room. Just as Chet gains the upper hand, Don appears in the doorway and uses a spell to electrocute him. Chet falls to the ground, unconscious, and Don asks them what Chet is. They say they're not really sure, and Don tells them that they need to dispose of his body somewhere soon—his spell will only last for a few days.
After saving them from Chet, Don starts digging around under Dean and Sam's mattresses. When he pulls out two magical coins, Dean and Sam are incredulous. Apparently, Maggie isn't as forgiving as Don, and was still trying to kill them. Don is just thankful that his marriage is back on track, and he leaves with the coins in hand.
After Don is gone, Sam and Dean get ready to leave Prosperity right away with Chet chained up in the back seat of the Impala. Before they get in the car, though, Sam confronts Dean about his habit of keeping things to himself. He knows that Dean isn't telling him something, and he thinks they need to follow Don and Margaret's example and communicate with each other. Unfortunately, Dean refuses to open up, and they leave with the issue still unresolved.
