|Synopsis=
 +
After Bobby's death in 7.10 Death's Door, Dean and Sam are overcome by grief. They don't do anything for a week, and then two weeks pass in which Dean does nothing but focus on deciphering the numbers that Bobby wrote on Sam's hand just before he died: 45489. He covers the walls in Rufus's cabin with notes and stories about Dick Roman, the leader of the Leviathans. After those three weeks, Sam, who has found Bobby's contact book, asks Dean if they should let any of Bobby's friends know what happened to him. Dean doesn't want to, and just as they're arguing about it, Bobby's phone rings. Dean refuses to answer it, so Sam picks it up and hears the voice of a young girl, who says that her dad told her to call Bobby Singer specifically. When Sam says that he's not available, she hangs up.
 +

 +
Sam tells Dean that the girl sounded scared, and that she might be a hunter's kid. He thinks they should find and check on her, but Dean is more worried about Frank Devereaux, who he hasn't heard from in weeks. Frank is supposed to be looking into Bobby's numbers, as well, and Dean thinks they should focus on the numbers Bobby gave them in his last moments. They decide to split up: Sam will check on the girl and Dean will check on Frank.
 +

 +
Sam uses Bobby's contact book to find Krissy Chambers, the 14-year-old daughter of a hunter named Lee Chambers. Krissy, who seems to think that her father is a traveling salesman, hasn't heard from him in five days. Sam tells her that he'll look for Lee and gives her a number to call in case he goes missing, too.
 +

 +
Meanwhile, Dean arrives at Frank's house to find it cleaned out. He pulls his gun, and then Frank appears. Frank thinks Dean is a Leviathan, so he holds a gun on him. It's a standoff until they both cut themselves to prove that they aren't Leviathans (Leviathans bleed black goo), then Frank leads Dean out of the house and they drive to another location, where Frank has set up an RV with all of his computer and surveillance equipment. Frank tells Dean that the Leviathans are on to him since he's been researching Dick Roman and the numbers that Dean gave him, so he's had to go further underground. Dean reminds Frank that he paid him $15,000 for his services and asks him what he's learned about the numbers.
 +

 +
Frank reveals what we already know: the number 45489 doesn't mean anything because Bobby didn't finish writing the full number. After trying all of the other 6-digit possibilities, Frank has found that the numbers 454893, or 45"4' 89"3', are GPS coordinates that lead to a field in Wisconsin. The land was recently purchased by Wellman, Inc., a subsidiary of Richard Roman Enterprises. They decide to travel there and set up surveillance, but when they arrive they find security cameras already in place. They leave and, once back at his RV, Frank hacks into the cameras. He tells Dean that he'll take the first shift watching the video feeds and that Dean should sleep because he looks terrible.
 +

 +
Dean falls asleep immediately and misses a call from Sam, who leaves a message about the case he's on. Sam has looked through the notes he found in Lee's closet and, after examining a body in the morgue, knows that Lee went missing after tracking a vetala to a truck stop diner near Dodge City, Kansas. He references John's journal, which describes vetala as venomous loners that like to feed on their victims over a few days. Eager to find Krissy's father before it's too late, he heads to the same diner that Lee disappeared from. Because he's only expecting one vetala, however, he quickly falls prey to the vetala Marlene, who's posing as a waitress, and her partner, the sex worker Sally.
 +

 +
When Dean wakes up, Frank tells him that he's been asleep for 36 hours. While he was out, Frank watched the field on the camera feeds and noted the appearance of Amanda Willer, an employee of Dick Roman, and a crew surveying the land. With nothing to do but watch and wait, Frank tells an impatient Dean to go kill something to blow off steam. Dean is frustrated, though, and Frank tells him that he has two options: (1) quit hunting or (2) fake a smile and be a professional.
 +

 +
After their heart to heart, Dean checks his voicemail and, when he hears Sam's description of the vetala, remarks that Sam isn't right about something. He's still listening to it when he gets a call and he switches over, expecting Sam. Instead, it's Krissy, who's calling because she hasn't heard from Sam.
 +

 +
When Sam wakes up, he's tied to a chair and his neck is bloody. Lee Chambers is tied up as well, but very near death, and there are other men slumped in chairs around the room, dead. Sam tells Lee that he's a friend of Bobby's and that Krissy contacted him and is okay. Lee tells him that the vetala's victims tend to die after 3 or 4 feedings, and that he's already been fed on 3 times. When Sally shows up intending to feed on Lee again, Sam makes her angry so that she'll feed on him instead, prolonging Lee's life.
 +

 +
Meanwhile, Dean arrives at the Chambers' apartment and meets Krissy. She reveals that she knows about her father's hunts, and then insists on helping him look for her father, going so far as to hold a gun on him. Dean knocks the gun out of her hand, but she has burned all her fathers papers relating to the vetala hunt - after she memorized them. Dean is forced to take her along, and in the car Dean reveals that Sam and Lee were wrong in their assumption that vetalas are loners: they usually hunt in pairs. Krissy asks him how he knows things about the vetala that Sam didn't, and Dean reveals that he hunted two vetala when Sam was at Stanford. Krissy is surprised that Sam went to college, and Dean suggests that she could, too.
 +

 +
They arrive at the truck stop where men have been disappearing, and, as they watch, the sex worker Sally leads a trucker behind his rig. Dean doesn't pay it much attention, but Krissy notices Marlene getting in the cab before driving it away. They follow the truck, and, because Krissy is determined to make this her first hunt, Dean cuffs her to the steering wheel. Before he goes, he makes her give up her lock-pick and then goes into the building where Sam and Lee are being held.
 +

 +
Once inside, Dean hits Sally with a metal bar and goes after Marlene. He's about to kill her with his silver knife when Krissy, who's used a bobby pin to slip the handcuffs, tries to run to her bound father. Sally rouses and grabs her before she can get to him, then makes Dean drop his knife by threatening to kill Krissy. They're at a stand-off when Krissy, pretending to give a tearful goodbye to her father, pulls a silver knife from her sleeve and turns to stab Sally, killing her. Dean and Marlene are facing off when Krissy turns to free Sam, and Sam uses her knife to kill Marlene.
 +

 +
Sam and Dean visit Lee at the hospital and advise him to quit hunting. Lee protests that he got into the life for his family, and Dean says that he should get out for the same reason. They're leaving the hospital when Krissy runs out to say goodbye to Dean. She tells him that they are leaving the life and that she might even go to Stanford, like Sam. As they drive away, Dean and Sam are satisfied with the way the job went, but both are battling their own demons. Sam admits that he's not okay, but that he just wants to work. Dean agrees that they should focus on work and bringing down Dick Roman. When Sam turns and curls up to sleep, Dean stares at the road ahead and, perhaps calling to mind Frank's advice, tries to smile.

The numbers Bobby was trying to tell Sam and Dean were 454895, but he only wrote 45489. Frank investigated the possibility of a missing digit and used 454893 to generate the coordinates latitude (45.4) and longitude (-89.3) for a field in Summit Lake, Wisconsin. Krissy asks him how he knows things about the vetala that Sam didn't, and Dean reveals that he hunted two vetala when Sam was at Stanford. Krissy is surprised that Sam went to college, and Dean suggests that she could, too.

Quotes

Frank: Sure you're not a Leviathan. Dick Roman's not a Leviathan. Gwyneth Paltrow's not a Leviathan...
Frank: You think it's easy to see this deep into what's real, and also be bi-polar with delusional ideation? There is no pill for my situation sweetie-pop, so yeah, best guess – the big mouths are onto me. Next question!
Dean: What was she doing?

Frank: Being a naughty, bossy little girl.

Dean: I'd hate to ask for that in the non-porno version.
Dean: I'm not gonna quit. It's not even an option. I'm not gonna walk out on my brother.

Frank: Okay then, fine. Do what I did.
Dean: What - go native? Stock up on C-rations?
Frank: No, cupcake. What I did when I was 26 and came home to find my wife and two kids gutted on the floor. Decide to be fine til the end of the week. Make yourself smile because you're alive and that's your job. And do it again the next week.
Dean: So fake it?

Frank: I call it being professional. Do it right, with a smile, or don't do it.
Dean: You could too, you know. Go to college. Be a hunter slash pediatrician.
Krissy: What century is this? No one fist bumps anymore.

Dean: C'mon. Give it up!

Krissy: You're a dweeb.
Lee: Ever know anyone who left the life?
Dean: No - they all get killed first.

Adventures in Babysitting was a 1987 comedy movie.
Writer Adam Glass said that the movie True Grit was an inspiration for the episode.[1]

Using the latitude (45.4) and longitude (-89.5), one finds a field in Gleason, Wisconsin, which is coincidentally not far from Beavers Lake.
Dean: No, Bobby didn't give us coordinates to some patch of weeds in Cheeseville.
Due to Wisconsin's long history of cheesemaking, epithets related to the dairy product are often associated with the state and its inhabitants (aka Cheeseheads).
Frank Devereaux gives Dean a variety of nicknames in this episode:
 • Sweetie pops
 • Buster Brown
 • My Little Lamb
 • Tarzan
 • Grasshopper
 • Cupcake
Frank also compares the two of them to Cheech and Ed from Ma Bell while they are costumed as electricians while undertaking surveillance.
Frank: Patience, grasshopper.
In the 1970s TV series Kung Fu, Kwai Chang Caine is a Shaolin monk, whose teacher Master Po would refer to him as 'grasshopper.'
Frank: You cool your heels Buster Brown.
Buster Brown was a comic strip character created in 1902. he was a very pretty boy who was always causing trouble.
Marlene: You're looking a little Cabo Wabo, there.
Cabo Wabo is the name of a chain of nightclubs and restaurants located in Cabo San Lucas, BCS, Mexico; Harvey's Lake Tahoe in Stateline, Nevada; and a third location on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada. It is also a popular brand of tequila. All were founded by rock musician Sammy Hagar. From 1985 to 1996, and 2003 to 2005, Hagar was the singer for Van Halen. Hagar claims he coined the name after watching a man walk unsteadily along a local beach after a heavy night's partying. Using the town's nickname, Cabo (which means "cape" in Spanish), and shortening "wobble" to "wabo" he said of the man that he was doing the "Cabo wabo". In 1988, he wrote a song of the same name for Van Halen's 1988 album OU812.
Dean: Maybe because you're one tinfoil hat away from a rubber room.
Tinfoil or tin hats is a term that originated from people wearing tinfoil hats to keep out the "alien signals" and is generally used to describe the super paranoid or conspiracy freaks. Source. For the fandom meaning see Tin hat.
Frank: Did I mention you look awful?

Dean: Yes, maybe because someone I cared about just got shot in the head. And this is like shoving a rock up a hill. And...screw you.

In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was a man who defied the gods, and chained death. As punishment, he was condemned to perform the endless task of pushing a boulder up a hill, only to see it roll down again, and to do this forever. In philosophy, Albert Camus wrote a book called The Myth of Sisyphus, where he talked about the struggle to find meaning in a world devoid of it, and how the absurd hero found happiness when he embraced the hopelessness of his situation.
Dean: [referring to Bobby's coordinates] Relax, it's a field not the Death Star. Dick's at a TED conference, it's all over the Huffington Post.
The Death Star was Darth Vader's planet destroying space station in the Star Wars movies. See Star Wars for more references to the movies in Supernatural.
TED conferences are run by a non-profit organization with the mission of promoting "ideas worth spreading" from the areas of technology, entertainment and design (i.e. TED). The conference Dick is attending is most likely the one held in Long Beach from Feb 27 – Mar 2, 2012. In 7.09 How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters, one of the folders Bobby took out of Dick's suitcase was labelled "TED Conference".
The Huffington Post is a U.S. online news and features website.
