Synopsis

Dean checks in with Frank Devereaux and learns that Dick Roman has a lot of new projects overseas, as well as a new Biggerson's in Butte, Montana. He's more concerned about Bobby's numbers, but Frank doesn't have any progress on what Dick is doing with the field in Wisconsin. Dean's frustrated, and Sam is sleep-deprived because of the disruptive hallucinations of Lucifer he has been having. They decide to take a case a few hours away in Portland, Oregon, where a ballerina named Irina danced herself to death to Swan Lake.

When Sam and Dean arrive at the Portland Police Department, they ask for the crime scene photos. What they see, Irina's feet blown off and her ballet slippers sitting pristine next to her, makes them think that this is a case for them. They request the slippers from the officer in the evidence room, but they're missing. The officer tells them that his daughter Tracy, a ballerina, must have grabbed them, and Sam and Dean run for the girl's bathroom. They arrive in time to see the slippers force Tracy to her feet and spin her in a circle, so they grab her and Dean pulls the slippers off her feet before she is injured. Sam, now sure that the slippers are cursed, is careful not to touch them, but when they're in their car the shoes somehow move from the trunk to the back seat. Sam comments that the shoes appear to be Dean's size, and Dean admits that he suddenly has a strong urge to dance ballet.

They head into the shop that sold the slippers, Out with the Old, and demand to know where the shopkeeper got them. He tells them that his mother kept the slippers in a special box, which turns out to be a curse box. Sam quickly puts them back inside it before Dean can put the slippers on his feet. They then flash their fake FBI badges and ask the shopkeeper, Scott Freeman, where his mother got the slippers. He doesn't know, but they were with a lot of other items, all in specially-crafted boxes. After his mother sold the shop and passed away, he wanted to get rid of all the strange items she'd been collecting in the large safe in her shop.

Sam and Dean quickly try to track down the other cursed items that Scott sold. They're too late to save a woman who poured boiling water into her mouth from a cursed teakettle, but Sam is able to stop a boy from stabbing his mother after a cursed gramophone hypnotized him, and Dean is "just in time" to collect a cursed "vintage gentleman's magazine." Back at Out with the Old, they put the cursed objects, now safely in their curse boxes, back in Ms. Freeman's sigil-decorated safe.

Scott is shocked to discover that cursed objects are real, but happy to know that his mother wasn't crazy. He regrets pushing her to sell the shop, especially because she seemed so against it. When Dean finds out that Ms. Freeman died in a car accident the day after selling the shop to a pushy real estate agent, he's suspicious. He tells Scott not to feel guilty because it won't bring his mother back, and then he leaves after saying that he and Sam will be back with a U-Haul to take the safe off Scott's hands. Once outside, he sees the real estate agent's sign in the shop window, and then notices that the same sign is on every small shop on the block. He decides to do some research.

Meanwhile, the real estate agents at Bicklebee Realty are determined to get the signature of Mr. Marshall, a shop owner on the same block as Out with the Old who doesn't want to sell his property. They offer him a lot of money, but he says that the hardware store is his life and that he doesn't want to sell. The agent, Joyce Bicklebee seems disappointed, but shakes his hand. As she grips Mr. Marshall's hand, however, an expression of pain crosses his face, and then Joyce morphs into an exact copy of Mr. Marshall before breaking his neck, revealing herself to be a Leviathan. Still in the guise of Mr. Marshall, she signs over the property to Bicklebee Realty and morphs back into herself. She gives the paperwork to her assistant George with a smile on her face, but George is concerned. She's already killed Ms. Freeman, and Dick Roman doesn't like it when they call attention to themselves. George disposes of Mr. Marshall's body by putting him in his bed with a lit cigar and burning it, and then Joyce sends him across town for a complicated coffee order.

Sam, who's driving a pickup truck back to Out With The Old, is having a hard time staying awake. Dean calls him with information he's gathered about the real estate agency that Ms. Freeman sold her shop to, and it all points to something suspicious. He wants to stay in town and check it out. Sam is too tired to talk about it, though, so Dean calls Frank when he has difficulty accessing the agency's corporate information. While Dean talks to Frank, Sam is falling asleep behind the wheel of his truck. He crosses over to the wrong side of the road and is almost hit by a semi-truck, so he stops for coffee. He's ordering a triple red eye when George, who is picking up Joyce's coffee order, spots him. George follows him to Out with the Old and calls Joyce to let her know that Sam Winchester is going into the antique shop they just bought. He plans to eat him, but Joyce calls George back to their office, where she tells him that she needs to be the one to eat the Winchesters.

Dean, who's having a coffee and considering a piece of pie at the Lampliter Gallery Café, gets a call from Frank, who cracked the firewall to GeoThrive, Inc. He tells Dean that the company is actually a conglomerate within a subsidiary within a conglomerate that leads back to Richard Roman Enterprises. For some reason, the Leviathans want the real estate on this block in Portland, and Frank tells Dean that they should leave town. Dean tells him that they can't leave while people are dying and that they need to find some answers, and Frank hangs up, frustrated, just as Sam joins Dean at the café. When Dean sees how tired he is, he tells Sam to find a motel and crash, but Sam says it's impossible because Hallucifer won't shut up. Before they can discuss their plans any further, Sam gets a frantic call from Scott Freeman, who says that he looked into one of his mom's mirrors and now he wants to rip off his face. They hurry back to the shop.

At the shop, Scott is not actually cursed, but held hostage by the Leviathans Joyce and George. After he calls Sam and Dean, they bind and gag him and then consider their options. Too many people have died already in their grab for real estate, so Joyce tells George that after they kill Scott, George will have to pose as Scott Freeman for the next 30 years. He doesn't have a chance to react before Sam and Dean show up. Joyce quickly attacks Dean, and George goes after Sam. He throws Sam across the room and then, as they grapple, tells him that there's a bucket of cleaning agent nearby. Sam is confused, but dunks George in the liquid at his request. George's face is still burning when he points Sam to a sword on the wall. Sam grabs the sword from the display case and quickly cuts off Joyce's head before she can kill Dean.

After they kill Joyce, Sam and Dean tell Scott to start a new life somewhere so that the Leviathans can't find him. He leaves and, once they're alone with George, they demand to know why he helped them. George tells them that he was sick of cleaning up after Joyce and that he wanted her dead. He wants to eat her head, but Sam and Dean refuse to give it to him and demand to know what Dick Roman is doing in Wisconsin. George tells them that Dick is buying up real estate all across the country and that he has no idea what is going on in Wisconsin. He does know Dick's plans for the block in Portland, though: he's going to build a research center that will eventually cure cancer.

Dean and Sam are confused, so they take the cursed objects from Out with the Old and head to Frank's so that they can update him on the Leviathan situation. They arrive at his mobile home to the sound of loud music, but no sign of Frank. They eventually burst into the RV and find Frank's equipment damaged, papers strewn everywhere, and blood splattered on every surface, human mixed with Leviathan. They assume the worst.

Trivia & References

The title "Out with the Old" is the first part of a saying, "Out with the old, and in with the new."
Dancer 1: No Irina again. Guess she's too famous for us.

Dancer 2: No, she just... “vants to be alone.”

A reference to the 1932 movie Grand Hotel where Greta Garbo's character — Russian ballerina Grusinskaya — says "I want to be alone." It placed 30th in AFI's top 100 movie quotes of all time in 2005.
The cursed ballet slippers is a reference to the Hans Christian Anderson story The Red Shoes, in which a vain girl's shoes are cursed to make her dance continuously, until she has her feet cut off. Even then, the shoes continue to haunt her until she prays for mercy.
Dean: I saw Black Swan. Twice. Hot tutu-on-tutu action? Come on, Sam. What's wrong with you?
Black Swan is a 2010 psychological thriller by Darren Aronofsky about ballet dancers competing for the role of the White Swan and the Black Swan in Swan Lake. Dean also refers to Prince Siegfried, who is the lead male ballet dancer role. Dean's comment about "tutu on tutu action" refers to the lesbian sex scene in the movie.
Dean: I hear they have good coffee in Portland.

Sam: Dude, that's Seattle.

Seattle, Washington is the coffee capital of the world, and the city of origin of the Starbucks franchise.
Sam: Geez! You okay there, Baryshnikov?

Dean: Yeah. Yeah, I'm "pas de done."

Mikhail Baryshnikov is a Russian-born ballet dancer who defected to Canada in 1974.
Dean's phrase "pas de done" is a play on the ballet term pas de deux.
Sam uses the alias Bruce Hornsby — the name of an American improvisational musician — when reporting of the death of the woman killed by the cursed kettle.
The cursed gramophone was sold to Brenda Gluck, 413 River Street — Gluck may be a reference to Christoph Willibald Ritter von Gluck, an 18th-century opera composer.
The cursed vintage gentlemen's magazine was sold to Peter Yankit, 27 Johnson Lane. The names Peter and Johnson are slang terms for penis, and Yankit is an entendre for masturbation.
Frank: Can a dog play poker?

Dean: I don't...
Frank: The answer is "yes."

This is probably a reference to artist C.M. Coolidge's famous series of oil paintings showing dogs playing poker.
Frank: And Bingo was his name-o. Ahh!
A reference to the children's folk song 'Bingo'.
Dean: Okay, you know what? Enough with the insomnia crap. All right, Pacino? You need to crash. I'll keep working. You find a motel and get some sleep. Okay?
Sam orders a triple red eye, which in the Mid-Atlantic is called an Al Pacino because of the Vittoria Coffee commercials the actor did. Young Sam ordered the same thing in 7.03 The Girl Next Door.
It could also be referring to the 2002 Christopher Nolan film Insomnia starring Al Pacino.
Hallucifer's torment of Sam by singing Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" fifty times in a row is a likely reference to Ghost, in which the main character, a ghost, sings "Henry the 8th" over and over to convince a medium to do what he wants her to do.
Joyce: Loose lips, yada, yada, yada.
A reference to the idiom 'loose lips sink ships'.

Minutiae

This episode was originally titled 'Another Man's Treasure'.source This is a reference to the proverb 'one man's trash is another man's treasure'.
Frank tells Dean that Dick Roman is funding an archaeological dig, a factory in Saudi Arabia, and a fishery in Jakarta.
Frank mentions that a new Biggerson's Restaurant has opened in Butte, Montana. Frank assumes it is Leviathans who have opened it.

The woman who dies after drinking boiling water from the cursed kettle, also has some Biggerson's coupons on her counter.

Butte was previously mentioned in 7.14 Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie.
A sign in the police station says "Abusive language will not be tolerated & will be prosecuted by law."
In Irina's autopsy report, a few Supernatural crewmember's names are again used:
  • Head graphic designer, Mary-Ann Liu as 'Dr. M. Liu' (physician).
  • Art department co-ordinator, Adrian Hrytzak as 'Adrian Hrytzak, L.L.B.' (prosector).
  • Graphic designer, Lee Anne Elaschuk as 'Leeanne Elaschuk, M.D.' (medical examiner)
The police station bathroom in which the girl finds the ballet shoes is almost identical to the police station bathroom used in 2.07 The Usual Suspects.
Joyce Bicklebee & George drive a BMW 320i with the number plate YGA 6L8.
Sam: Hey, with enough curse mojo you can turn a freaking pencil into a weapon of mass destruction.
In 4.17 It's a Terrible Life, a man committed suicide by stabbing himself in the neck with a pencil.
The staircase in Brenda's house appears to be the same staircase used in 1.05 Bloody Mary.
Before George, Joyce had 4 assistants, all of whom she ate after they displeased her.
Joyce's coffee order was for a "Grande non-fat no-whip white mocha, one pump sugar-free, double-shot espresso."
Sam and Dean drive a Chevrolet pickup (number plate BVO 570) in this episode — possibly a reference to the Impala which is still on lockdown.
Dean does his research at the Lampliter Gallery Cafe.
Goof: When Dean tells Sam about Bicklebee Realty he says "There's this new company, never even tasted real estate..." but on their website on the laptop screen in front of him it clearly says, "With over 20 years experience in the Real Estate Market, I'm one of Portland's top Realtors. I specialize in National and International property..."
As in 7.11 Adventures in Babysitting, Frank comes up with a new nickname for Dean — 'Fudge Pop'.
The coffee shop George goes to is called Rose City's Mojo Java. The power of cursed objects is referred to as "mojo" several times by both Sam and Dean.
"Bad Moon Rising" which plays in this episode as Sam and Dean arrive at Frank's trailer, was also played in 1.22 Devil's Trap as the Impala gets hit by a demon-driven semi-truck. Earlier in this episode, Sam fell asleep at the wheel and nearly had another semi accident. This episode ends much like the other, with the song playing and a lot of blood, making it appear as though the characters are dead, although this is neither confirmed nor denied in the episode.
