Synopsis

Two priests from St. Anne's Cathedral encounter a woman and a man who are looking for their friend called Castiel. The next day, Castiel, who is staying at the shelter for homeless people run by the church, finds the priests dead in the gardens. Their eyes have been burned out, indicating they were killed by angels.

At the Men of Letters Bunker, Dean awakens and finds Sam, who has returned from a run and bought Dean breakfast. Dean tells Sam he is worried — they haven't heard from Cas, who is meant to be making his way to the bunker, and Dean is still concerned about the effect of the trials on Sam. Sam reassures Dean that he feels fine. Ezekiel then takes over Sam and tells Dean that he has been able to hear other angels talking. He relays to Dean that some of the angels are organizing themselves, taking over human vessels, and trying to find Cas. Dean asks if Naomi is in charge, but Ezekiel doesn't know. Dean then tells Ezekiel to relinquish control of Sam. When he does, Dean insists that he and Sam need to find Cas.

Sam and Dean begin researching Cas' location starting from where he was when he phoned Dean and how far he could have traveled. During their research, they come across articles on the death of the woman whom the angel Hael had possessed and that of the two priests, and decide to start their search there.

The scene shifts to several unrelated people watching a broadcast by a TV evangelist, the Reverend Buddy Boyle. In his worldwide broadcasts, Boyle encourages his flock to welcome angels if they appear and "just let them on in," making them available as vessels. Behind the scenes, Boyle is being manipulated by an angel named Bartholomew, who is leading the hunt for Castiel. As Bartholomew praises the reverend's work, one of his devotees appears and offers herself as a vessel. However, she is unable to contain the angel who enters her and she rather messily explodes.

Castiel has moved on from St. Anne's and is staying with a group of homeless men who are camped out under a bridge in Layfette, Indiana. Castiel tells another man, Joey, how challenging he is finding his new life and then retires to an abandoned bus to sleep. There, he is confronted by another angel who has possessed a pharmacist. He attacks and wounds Cas and is surprised to find that Cas is human. Castiel fights back and kills him with his angel blade.

The next day, Sam and Dean read about the death of the pharmacist, which sounds like the death of an angel-possessed human. Having found that Castiel has left St. Anne's, the boys head to Indiana.

Castiel uses the last of his cash to get Enochian warding sigils tattooed on his lower ribs to hide himself from angels. When Bartholomew learns that the angels can no longer track Castiel, he decides to use rogue reapers to find him, sending one of them, Maurice, to track the Winchesters in the hope that they will lead them to Castiel.

Castiel seeks solace in a church. He speaks to a woman who is praying for her ill husband. Castiel bitterly asks her what she would do if he told her no one heard her prayers, but the woman responds that he doesn't understand what faith means.

Speaking to Joey at the homeless encampment, Sam and Dean learn that Castiel was heading to Detroit. Later, after picking up some food, they realize they are being followed, and they capture the reaper Maurice. They torture Maurice, finding out that Naomi is dead, that the angel Bartholomew is leading the hunt for Cas, and that Maurice is not the only reaper on the job. However, Sam and Dean have no more leads on Castiel's whereabouts. Dean asks Ezekiel to use his abilities to track any other reapers hunting Cas.

Cas is finding life on the streets hard. A young woman called April Kelly gives him some food, and later that night she takes him to her apartment after she sees him out in the rain. April tends to Castiel's wound and, in response to her kindness, he shares his feelings of guilt for the actions that have lead to his current situation. April kisses him, and they have sex (twice. Apparently it was good for both of them.)

The next morning, April reveals herself as a reaper, ties Castiel to a chair and proceeds to torture him using his angel blade. April demands to know how the angels can reverse Metatron's spell and return to Heaven. Castiel tries to explain how Metatron tricked him, but she refuses to believe him. He tells her that his grace was part of the spell and warns that without him the spell may not be able to be reversed.

Dean and Sam burst into the apartment, but April stabs Castiel, and uses her power to slam the boys against the wall. Dean pulls the angel blade from Castiel's chest and kills April. Dean rushes back to Cas, but finds him already dead. As Dean looks over Castiel's body, Ezekiel takes control of Sam and resurrects Cas, although the effort proves to be too much — causing him (and Sam) to collapse.

As both Sam and Castiel come around, Dean tells them that he got April to revive Cas with the promise that if she did so he wouldn't kill her. Castiel seems pleased that Dean apparently didn't keep his promise.

Back at the bunker, Castiel enjoys a shower and food. He shares with the boys about how he is learning to be human, and tells them that he thinks they will be good teachers.

Later, Ezekiel takes over Sam's body and tells Dean that the angels will continue to hunt Castiel down, and it puts them all at risk to keep him in the bunker. Dean refuses to send Castiel away, but Ezekiel gives him an ultimatum — if Castiel doesn't leave, he will leave the bunker, leaving Sam to die.

Dean goes to Castiel and tells him that he has to leave.

Dean: No. I read "pie." The rest is just "blah, blah, blah." Listen, when we hit Detroit, we start with the homeless shelters.
Castiel: What if you were to find out that no one is listening? That God had pretty much left, that Heaven had gone out of business? What would you do?

Woman in Church: But that's not possible.
Castiel: I think it's completely possible.
Woman in Church: You're missing the point. It's not possible because I have my faith.
Castiel: But when I tell you the truth-

Woman in Church: Your truth, not mine. Your lack of faith doesn't cancel what I believe. That's not how it works. You know... I think you might feel better if you tried it my way. Someone is listening.
April: You call this rag a bandage? You're lucky this wasn't infected. What happened to the guy who attacked you?
Castiel: Oh, I stabbed him. He exploded.
Castiel: Yes. Well... I guess I trusted the wrong person.

April: Bad investment advice?

Castiel: No, vanity. I thought I was more important, more effective than I am, that I could... fix everything. Now all I can do is keep running.
April: Well say something!

Castiel: There are no words.
April: So, that was okay?
Castiel: Very much so. Was what I did correct?

April: Very much so.
Dean: I lied. I do that.
Castiel: I am really enjoying this place. Plentiful food. Good water pressure. Things I never even considered before. There really is a lot to being human, isn't there?
Dean: It ain't all just burritos and strippers, my friend.

Trivia & References

"I'm No Angel" may refer to the 1986 album (and song) of the same name by the Greg Allman Band.
Dean: He's getting cagey - he's using a fake name. Clarence.

Sam: That's what Meg used to call him. Of course he doesn't get that he's using the name of a pretty famous angel.
Dean: What?
Sam: Dude! It's a Wonderful Life! Seriously!

Clarence is a nickname the demon Meg had for Castiel. The name is a a reference to the movie It's A Wonderful Life, in which the angel Clarence shows Jimmy Stewart that life is worth living, and then finally gets his wings and goes to heaven.
April: April by the way. April Kelly.

Castiel: Umm, Castiel.
April: One name?
Castiel: Like God.

The "el" suffix in angel names literately translate to "God" or "like God."
