Angels run under a unit called hierarchical units. Much of it appears to operate like a military organization, organized into Garrisons. Michael and Zachariah manage Heaven. Seven angels from Castiel's garrison were killed by the angel named Uriel. 4.16 On The Head Of A Pin. All Angels have superiors. Superior Angels can summon their pupils back to Heaven. They can also promote and demote their pupils if necessary. Castiel's empathies toward Dean were questioned by his superiors. After much debate, his superiors temporarily gave the Angel Uriel superiority over Castiel. Archangels are of the highest hierarchy on the celestial chain of command. Angels are higher than Cherubs but lower than Archangels. Cherubs are weaker than Angels and Archangels.

Michael, Lucifer, Gabriel and Raphael have proved to possess much knowledge of God's character and personality (Michael, Lucifer, Gabriel and Raphael seem to understand God very well). This proves that these are the four Angels who have seen God face to face. Most angels possess limited knowledge about God; this is because only four angels have actually seen him.

The Celestial chain of Command

God's angel army is not unlimited according to Castiel.

Celestial chain of Command:

Michael is the leader of God's Army. He is essentially the highest Angel on the Celestial Chain Of Command. Superiors can summon their pupils back to Heaven if needed. They also can promote and demote their pupils.

  • Archangel's are of the highest hierarchy. They are extremely powerful warriors of God. Castiel described them as being heaven's most fearsome weapon.

Archangels (1st highest Order)
  • Angel's are described as warriors of God, compared to humans, angels are extremely powerful, but they are weaker than archangels, but still stronger than cherubs.

    Angels (2nd highest Order)
  • Cherubs are weaker than angels and archangels. They are ranked as third class angels. Even though they are weaker than other angels, they are very durable; Cupid has taken a fist to the face and remained conscious.

Cherubim (3rd highest Order)
  • Fallen Angels are angels that fell from Heaven. Fallen angels hold no authority over other angels. Lucifer and Anna are examples of fallen angels, but fell for different reasons. Uriel holds disdain for fallen angels.

After watching humans interact, Anna began to long for free will. And when she couldn't take it any longer, she removed her Grace and fell to Earth and was reborn human. Even without her Grace, she still possessed superhuman strength and telekinesis. She eventually regains her grace.

God told his angels to bow before Men and love them more than him. But Lucifer, God's most beautiful angel, refused to bow to humanity, God tried to explain that while humans are be capable of great mischief, that the are equally capable of great good. Lucifer still unwilling to bow entreats to his older brother, Michael. He asks Michael to disobey, but Michael refuses and cast Lucifer out of heaven. Lucifer then twists a human soul into the first demon in defiance of God. God has Michael imprison Lucifer with 600 seals, 66 of which must break for his release.

Known Garrisons

  • Castiel - Castiel is an angel of God. Castiel is Zachariah's pupil. Over the course of Season4 and Season5, Castiel has become more humanized; this is mainly due to his throbbing urge to help Dean in any way even if it means disobedience. Anna used to be a superior of Castiel and Uriel. However, this changed when she willing removed her Grace and fell to Earth. Castiel has been killed twice in Supernatural. He was first destroyed by the archangel named Raphael. He was then killed by the archangel named Lucifer. But, God revived Castiel after his deaths. He is currently the new Viceroy of Heaven.
  • Anna - Anna was an angel of God. Anna used to be Castiel and Uriel's superior. Due to some major insecurities and longing for freedom, she tour out her Grace which dwelled inside of her angelic being and she fell to Earth. She then was reborn Human and was then raised by Mr. and Mrs. Milton. She was then given the name 'Anna Milton'. She lost her position on the Host forever for this act of disobedience - this also terminated her ranking over Castiel and Uriel. Michael killed Anna in episode 5.13 The Song Remains The Same.
  • Uriel - Uriel was an angel of God during the first War. It was later reveled that he was working for Lucifer during the 2008 through 2009 era. Uriel was very powerful and he could be quite stern at times. According to the angel named Castiel, Uriel was the funniest angel in their entire garrison. Anna used to be a superior of Uriel and Castiel. Uriel can take down other angels with little effort - he killed seven angels and he almost killed Castiel. Anna killed him with an angel-killing-blade.
  • Seven unidentified angels - Uriel asked seven angels from his garrison to help him free Lucifer. But when they denied him, Uriel killed them.

Superiors

Superior Angels, such as Zachariah and Michael hold superiority over most angels. They can change an angels rank in a certain Garrison, such as they did when they demoted Castiel for his human attachments, this left Uriel in charge of Castiel. Anna stated that when her human body was destroyed after the retrieval of her Grace, she requested some favors, and apparently she was returned her human form.

The act of picking a Prophet comes from high up on the Celestial Chain Of command. Because Castiel isn't well informed on angelic objectives, he doesn't know how Prophets are chosen, however he does know that the order comes from his superiors.

  • Zachariah is an extremely powerful Angel who has four faces and six wings in his true form. He is Castiel's superior. According to Zachariah, he was greatly respected by all of his angel colleges. He implied the reason for his great reputation was due to his consistent successes when he finished his missions/duties. But then he was given the task of the Millennium. This task was having Dean Winchester consent to Michael. When he failed to do so, his reputation decreased dramatically. He said that his colleges were drawn to his failure and laughing at him. He even admitted that they were right to do so.
  • Michael is an archangel. Michael is in charge of God's Angel army. Lucifer is the only celestial being that could match Michael in a fight. Although Gabriel was able to hurt Lucifer, which suggests that archangels can hurt each other.
  • Raphael is an archangel. Raphael is the only one of his brothers (Lucifer and Gabriel) who has stayed loyal to Michael. He killed Castiel because he broke the promise that he made with his superiors; after he returned to Heaven in 4.20 The Rapture, he made a promise to his superiors that if they released him that he will follow their plan, which was to allow Sam to kill Lilith in order for the 66th Seal to be broken - he broke this promise in 4.22 Lucifer Rising.

Major Episodes:

4.20 The Rapture - Castiel engaged in an angel on angel battle with some of his superiors. After this angelic battle, Cass was taken up to Heaven for further teachings on obedience; leaving his vessel, Jimmy Novak, unconscious were he was found by Sam and Dean. Apparently Cass wanted to warn the Winchesters about Zachariah's plan to allow the apocalypse to continue, which ultimately resulted in the freeing of Lucifer.

4.16 On The Head Of A Pin - Castiel's empathies towards Dean was questioned by his superiors. After much debats, his superiors temporarily gave the Angel Uriel superiority over Castiel.

5.02 Good God Y'All - Castiel's superiors apparently took away most of his Angelic powers (in Castiel's rebellion he is currently cut off from most of heaven's power), for example his ability to heal wounds and other severe conditions as of now this ability has ceased, and this left cass unable to heal Bobby’s condition.

5.13 The Song Remains The Same - After much torture, Anna managed to escape from her superiors. She contacts Dean in a dream, where she reveals it was Cass who betrayed her to Hevaen, but rather than go to meet her, Dean sends Castiel. She suggests killing Sam, and scattering his moelcules across the universe so Lucifer can't resurrect him. She then goes back in time to murder John and Mary, for if they die than Sam would have never existed. Anna thought that if Sam never existed than Lucifer would be vessel-less.
