Long ago. Eager to please, I freed the Shedim... Hell's most savage. Things so dark and base, God himself would not allow them into the light. But I, in my pride, believed that I could train them. Use them. But Lucifer feared them, as well he should. So he forbade it, locked them up again. He was... "disappointed" in me. The pain, the uh... the total humiliation,... it forged an eternal bond between us. I am his to command, as you are mine.

– Asmodeus, 13.02 The Rising Son

History

One of the four Princes of Hell. At some point during his eons of services to Lucifer, Asmodeus attempted to free the Shedim and use them in service of Lucifer. However, due to the dark and base nature of the shedim, Lucifer feared them and locked them away. For the disappointment Asmodeus caused Lucifer, he permanently scarred Asmodeus' face, and through that pain and humiliation, an eternal bond was forged. Asmodeus became Lucifer's to command. At some point in time, Asmodeus, along with his siblings Ramiel and Dagon, left the machinations of Hell behind to live quiet lives on Earth. It was revealed that he left because he is unable to get Lucifer's approval.

Characteristics

Asmodeus has yellow irises with white sclerae and no visible pupils. Dressed in white, he sports a well-groomed beard and a southern accent, and he has two scars around his left eye which were given to him by Lucifer, which indicates that he occupied his current vessel for millennia. According to Ramiel, Asmodeus occupied himself with his "hobbies," which have not been specified. His ability to smite a room full of demons and desire in ruling the shedim implies that he might be the most powerful of the four Princes of Hell.

Powers and abilities

Weaknesses

  • The Colt - Is capable of killing the Princes of Hell.
  • Lance of Michael - Is capable of killing the Princes of Hell, just as it killed Ramiel.
  • Nephilim - When Jack Kline turned on Asmodeus, Asmodeus fled rather than face Jack's wrath. Jack was also able to empower Castiel to kill Asmodeus's sister Dagon.

Episodes

13.02 The Rising Son

"I am Asmodeus... Here to rule until such time until Lucifer returns with his son, and there's gonna be some changes. The underperforming and ineffective, the corporate lackeys of the Crowley era are being purged. The grand ol' days of fire and brimstone are back."

Asmodeus resurfaces to reclaim control of Hell in Lucifer's absence. He has plans to change some things during his tenure as the interim King of Hell, including kill all the demons who once served Crowley. Asmodeus was able to smite a room full of demons, save a few including Drexel. The demons scoured all of Hell, even the Cage, but they are unable to locate Lucifer, so Asmodeus decided to direct their attention towards Jack Kline. As Drexel told him about his experience with Lucifer, Asmodeus showed off his scars which Lucifer gave him for freeing the Shedim. He took the experience and used the humiliation to grow and form an eternal bond with Lucifer. He plans to locate Jack and use him to take control of the Earth and teach him to master his powers all the while.

He was able to locate Dean and change his appearance into the the form of a female bartender. Later, he is able to locate Sam and transform himself as Donatello Redfield to learn more about Jack. When he discovered that Jack will become even more powerful than Lucifer, Asmodeus decided to use him to release the shedim. As Jack is opening a Devil's Gate in Jasper, Wyoming which leads to the prison of the shedim, they are intervened by Sam, Dean, and the real Donatello. After Dean shoots him, he returns to his previous form and begins to strangle the trio, which prompts Jack to seal the gate before the shedim can be released. Asmodeus tells Jack that they want to hold him back and he wants to give him the world, but Jack accuses him of hurting his friends and tries to use his powers to kill Asmodeus, who, in turn, disappears.

Asmodeus in Lore

Asmodeus is known as a king of demons / shedim and as one of the seven princes of Hell in Binsfeld's Classification of Demons, where he is considered the demon of lust in accordance with the seven deadly sins. In Jewish and Islamic lore, the shedim are said to be the followers of Asmodeus, who is their king.

Trivia

  • Asmodeus's white suit is reminiscent of the white suit that Lucifer wore the apocalyptic future conjured by Zachariah in 5.04 The End.
  • His southern accent and mention of the phrase "There's a new sheriff in town." in 13.02 The Rising Son is possibly a reference to Walker, Texas Ranger which Jeffery Vincent Parise previously guest starred in.
