According to Bobby, the Buruburu is a spirit form first catagorized and documented by the Japanese in the Edo period.

The Buruburu are Ghosts born of fear after dying in a terrifying manner. It spreads it, inflicting people who have teroorised other people with fear, also known as the Ghost Sickness.

In 4.06 Yellow Fever, after Dean is infected with the Ghost Sickness, Bobby and Sam try to kill the spirit. As it is impossible to burn all his remains, they capture the buruburu with an Iron chain etched with spell work, and then re-enact his death.
