Clem is a former security guard at the Laramie bus station in Wyoming. When he was caught stealing from the lockers at the station by his replacement, he was taken to the county jail to await arraignment.

8.02 What's Up, Tiger Mommy?

After having escaped from Crowley, Kevin Tran has hidden the demon tablet in a locked locker in the Laramie bus station in Wyoming. When he, Sam, Dean, and Linda Tran go to retrieve the tablet, it is no longer in the locker.

Sam and Dean talk to a security guard at the station who tells them someone had been breaking into the lockers and he had recently worked out that it was a former security guard called Clem Smedley. He tells them that Clem is now in county jail awaiting arraignment.

At the county jail, Sam and Dean interrogate Clem who is smug and refuses to talk without a lawyer. Countering that, Sam offers to work out a leniency deal if Clem co-operates with their questioning. As Sam gets close to getting Clem to tell them where the tablet is, Dean — who had been triggered into a Purgatory flashback by the interrogation environment — takes off his tie and becomes violent with Clem. He wraps the tie around his neck, pulls him to his feet, and shoves him up against the wall with the demon-killing knife pressed to his throat. Sam tries to calm Dean, but is ignored. Dean asks menacingly where the tablet is and Clem, afraid, blurts out that he sold it to a pawn shop on First and Main.
