Crowley was a [[crossroads demon]] and the former King of [[Hell]]. Prior to his ascension to the throne of Hell, he was the King of the [[Crossroads]]<ref name="five21">[[5.21 Two Minutes to Midnight]]</ref> and right-hand man of the first demon [[Lilith]].<ref name="five09">[[5.09 The Real Ghostbusters]]</ref>

In his human life, Crowley was a 17th century Scottish tailor named Fergus Roderick MacLeod from Canisbay, Scotland who sold his [[soul]] for three more inches in length on his penis, to, as he claimed, -- hit "double digits."<ref name="six04" </> His mother, [[Rowena]], was a [[witch]] and taught him a few things about witchcraft, like how to make and use [[hex bags]], prior to abandoning him.<ref>[[8.22 Clip Show]]</ref> Crowley never knew his father, only learning hundreds of years later that he was conceived in a winter solstice orgy, however Rowena would eventually reveal the truth that his father was a wealthy man in their village whom she had an affair with, and upon Fergus' birth simply abandoned the two of them to be with his real family. Fergus had a son, [[Gavin MacLeod]], who whom Crowley indicated that he "...[I] loathe the little bastard." Gavin, who is would be summoned in [[ghost]] form in by[[6.04 Weekend at Bobby'sSinger]], reciprocated and reciprocate the feeling, and revealed that he betrayed personal information on Crowley to [[Bobby Singer]].<ref name="six04" /> Dialogue suggests that Fergus died 291 years before [[9.21 King of the Damned]] took place,<ref name="nine21">[[9.21 King of the Damned]]</ref> which would put the year of his death at around 1723 and his age at his time of death at around 62, taking into consideration his 1661 birthdate.<ref name="six04" />
Sometime after going to [[Hell]] and becoming a [[crossroads demon]], Crowley rose to become the right-hand man of the first [[demon]] and then the ''de facto'' ruler, [[Lilith]]. He claimed his preferred [[meatsuit]] belonged to a "moderately successful" New York literary agent."<ref name="five20">[[5.20 The Devil You Know]]</ref> Crowley's eyes are were revealed to be red like other crossroads demons<ref name="eight02">[[8.02 What's Up, Tiger Mommy?]]</ref>, while his "smoke" form was red as well, unlike the traditional black smoke that is characteristic of most demons.
When the [[Apocalypse]] was looming, Crowley betrayed much of [[Hell]]'s hierarchy by providing [[the Colt]] to be used by [[Dean Winchester]] to in an attempt to kill [[Lucifer]]. He additionally provided the location of [[Death]] to Dean, which allowed for the collection of the [[Four_Horsemen_of_the_Apocalypse#The_Rings|final key]] to re-open [[Lucifer's Cage]], which would later allow Lucifer to be re-imprisoned.
Soon after Lucifer's imprisonment, Crowley sought out the [[Prince of Hell]], [[Ramiel]], to take the throne. Ramiel, however, refused the crown and offered Crowley the kingship, which he quickly accepted. After taking charge of Hell, Crowley transformed it into place where torture is exemplified by endless waiting queuing in line. Despite not being a Lucifer loyalist, he was seen using the [[Devil's Trident]] as a sigilsymbol, and also was pictured on painting on a wall in the halls of Hell dressed in a uniform with it as an insignia. During his first year of reigningrule, Crowley proposed to [[Castiel]] the plan to locate [[Purgatory]] and share the power of the [[Soul|souls]] of the [[monsters]] there. Through the resurrected [[Samuel Campbell]], he employed [[hunters]], including [[Sam]], to capture [[Alpha|monsters]] that he hoped will would lead him them to [[Purgatory]].
