Dean's Leather Jacket

Dean's leather jacket has become an iconic part of the character. Before it belonged to Dean Winchester, it belonged to his father John Winchester -- so there's no telling how old the leather is, how many battles the jacket has actually seen, though it is well worn and beautiful. It was really Dean’s superhero signature look until its untimely demise.

Ownership

• In the 1.01 Pilot Dean picks the leather jacket up off of a pile of clothes that John left behind, after he showers in John's abandoned motel room. Thereafter, the jacket remains in Dean's possession.

• In 4.13 After School Special we see Dean wearing the jacket as a senior in high school.

• Dean states in 3.10 Dream a Little Dream of Me that Dean's "favorite leather jacket" used to belong to his father. We never actually see John wear the leather jacket. He wears a similar jacket in the flashback in 1.18 Something Wicked, but it has different buttons and a horizontal seam across the breast that Dean's leather jacket does not have.

Stolen

In September 2010 new promo shots were being done for the upcoming Season 6. The shoot was in L.A. and the wardrobe was flown down from Vancouver a few days before, and was stolen somewhere along the way. Items taken included one of Castiel’s trench coats and Dean's Leather Jacket. Although wardrobe had replacements for Castiel's trench coat, Dean's Leather Jacket was sadly one of a kind.. The jacket (or at least a facsimile) is seen in the flashback to a younger Dean at the beginning of 10.02 Reichenbach.

Second Leather Jacket

Dean's new jacket in 7.22 There Will Be Blood.

In the last two episodes of season 7, Dean is seen wearing a new leather jacket which he wears while killing Dick Roman and getting dragged into Purgatory. He even hides the Leviathan-killing bone inside one of the pockets with the fake bone in the other. While he is not shown wearing it after leaving Purgatory, the jacket is briefly seen in a flashback when he first meets Benny in Purgatory. When shown, it is very dirty due to Dean's time in Purgatory and was presumably lost somewhere along the way while escaping.

According to Jensen at Jus In Bello Italy 2013, although this jacket was specially designed for him, the producers ended up hating the colour and production was told to get rid of it - hence its disappearance after Dean escapes Purgatory.
