Ectoplasm
A dense bio-energy that makes the materialisation of ghosts possible. The term ectoplasm was used in a similar sense in the 1984 film, Ghostbusters.
In Supernatural, ectoplasm appears as a viscous black liquid. It is typically excreted from either the tear ducts or ears of people being possessed by a ghost or left as a residue by an extremely powerful and angry spirit.
Ectoplasm secreted by a spectre appears green instead of black. Garth is apparently able to discern ectoplasm by its taste.

When Mary is possessed by the vengeful spirit of Hugo Moriarty, ectoplasm leaks out of her eyes.
13.05 Advanced Thanatology
While possessed by Dr. Avery Meadows, Shawn Raider has ecotplasm leak from his eyes as he is forced to drill into his own head.
13.16 Scoobynatural
When the Phantom appears through a door, he leaves a large spot of ectoplasm. Later as Sam and Velma are searching the attic, Sam notices a toy chest covered in ectoplasm.
