As Sam and Dean—under the guise of Child Protective Services—question ultra-religious Abraham and Gail Peterson on a couple of deaths in town, Elijah enters the living room and quietly asks his father to help him replace a wheel on their buggy. Abraham asks Dean to come along and help them.
Outside, Dean asks Elijah what the Petersons do when stuff goes wrong and there's no one around to help. Elijah answers that they "pray harder". Abraham gives Dean a little context as to why the family live off the grid, and then all three men put the wheel back on the buggy.
When they return to the living room, the questioning has turned sour with Sam and Gail, and Abraham asks Sam and Dean to leave.
Later that night, when Gail is making Magda punish herself for the deaths of Olivia and Ricky through self-flagellation, Elijah witnesses it through the basement window. He goes to join his father in the barn—both unaware that Sam is hidden in one of the horse stalls. Elijah shows concern about what his mother is doing to his sister, but Abraham tells him that Gail is "doing God's work", and that they can't let anyone find out about Magda because they'd take her away and she'd be a danger to society because of her powers.
Having realized that Sam is still sneaking around their property, Elijah finds Sam by the basement window. He aims a shotgun at him and tells him not to move. This allows Abraham to sneak up on Sam and knock him out with a stick and imprison him in the basement with Magda.
At supper time, Elijah accompanies his father into the basement to lead Sam and Magda to the dining room. At the dining table, his mother serves them all stew. They say grace before his father begins to eat. Not long after, Abraham begins frothing at the mouth and eventually dies, poisoned. Elijah is horrified, but his mother encourages him to eat his stew so they can "enter Heaven as a family." Elijah slowly raises his spoon to his mouth, despite Sam's pleading for him not to. Suddenly, Magda uses her telekinesis to throw the spoon out of Elijah's hand. Gail reaches for a knife, aiming for Magda. Throwing himself in the path of his mother's knife, Elijah is stabbed unintentionally and falls to the floor, dead.
