Production Filming Schedules

Supernatural takes 8 working days to film an episode. Production runs Monday to Friday. If Episode 1 starts on a Monday, the last day of filming is the following Wednesday and Episode 2 starts filming on Thursday.

Production schedules are fairly rigid for a variety of reasons. Locations must be arranged in advance and permits are needed; guest cast, regular cast, directors and crew must be scheduled. Standard contracts require cast and crew be paid even if production is cancelled. Each day production is running has fixed overhead costs. Jared mentioned in a Convention Q&A that their contracts require that the actors not take the last flight of the day when returning to Vancouver if they're filming the next day. Apparently they can get special permission to violate this rule (he was doing it for this con) but in general even returning from LA for the weekend they have to take an earlier flight than the last one of the day to avoid the risk of them not getting back to Vancouver in time to film the next day.

A normal season has 22 episodes a year. Season 3 was shortened to 16 episodes because of the writers strike; Season 7 was extended to 23 episodes by the network. Producer Jim Michaels said at the Roadhouse Con 2012 in Rio that Season 8 would be 23 episodes as well.

Production begins around the beginning of July and finishes around the end of March. Episodes take 8 weekdays to shoot but that is either 10 or 12 or more calendar days counting Saturdays, Sundays, single day holidays, and longer breaks at Thanksgiving and Christmas. The episodes are aired once a week, so production must start in the middle of the summer to stay ahead of the broadcast schedule even with breaks between airing groups of episodes. Holidays from shooting may include the first Monday of August (British Columbia Day), the first Monday of September (Labor Day), the second Monday of October (Canadian Thanksgiving), the 11th of November (Remembrance day), the entire 4th week of November (US Thanksgiving), 2-3 weeks at the end of December/Jan (Christmas, Boxing Day, New Years), the second Monday of February (Family Day, starting in 2013), and the Friday before Easter (Good Friday) if it falls before the end of shooting.

There is not much public information about the shooting schedule for the early seasons of Supernatural so most dates are based on fan reports, dates encoded in on-set photos, and educated guesses. In later seasons the crew, guest actors, and directors started tweeting during production. Some directors (e.g. Guy Bee) have tweeted pictures of Call Sheets which include 'Day N of 8' along with the date, which makes it definitive when they were shooting.

The starting time for shooting each day varies depending on when specific locations are available, if shooting at night, or what time filming ended the day before. Standard contracts include specific requirements for overtime/bonus pay if cast and crew are required to work more than a specific number of hours in one day, more than 5 days in a row, or have less than a specific number of hours between the end of one work day and the start of the next. Supernatural never seems to film on weekends, and they don't violate the rest times between shooting days, but they do frequently run late on shooting days. To avoid violating the rest period rules, the call times (when crew and actors have to begin work) are often early on Mondays and then if the shooting day doesn't end on time the next day's call times are pushed back (are later). If the call times move back a few hours later each day (a fairly common occurrence, although perhaps not as frequently on Supernatural as on other shows), Friday's call times can be in the afternoon. 'Fraturday' is a common industry slang term for a Friday shooting day that starts so late it doesn't end until the early hours of Saturday morning.

Filming Dates by Season

The episode numbers below are all based on the original broadcast schedule airing. Where noted, some episodes were shot out of order, so the production numbers may differ. Some were switched after shooting, but some were intentionally shot out of order because of the availability of locations, or because Jensen was directing and needed to shoot first to have preparation time.

Season 1

Ep # Dates Notes
1.01 Mar 2005 Exif data on promo pics... The scene on the bridge where Dean and Sam argue was filmed approx. 3/9/05. Scene in motel room ('no chick flick moments') was filmed approx. 3/17/05. There is also footage from filming the episode in an early interview that shows the date on the director clapboard to be 3/15/05 (this scene appears to be the struggle between Sam and Dean in Sam's apartment early in the episode). [1]. Also Jared at 1st Paleyfest talked about the time gap between the pilot and next ep.
1.02 Late Jul 2005 Exif data on promo pics, plus fan pics. There was a picture taken by a fan showing a graveyard scene set up for SPN on July 25. Looks like the opening scene where Sam visits Jess' grave in Palo Alto. Exif data on promo pics for the scene in the wendigo's lair is 7/27/05. [1]
1.03 Mid Aug 2005 Exif data on promo pics taken outside Bill Carlton's house shows date of 8/17/05. [1]
1.04 Late Aug - Early Sep 2005 Exif data on promo pics for one of the plane scenes, plus the final scene when they listen to the voicemail on John's phone show date of 8/30/05. Plus when Jared and Jensen did the commentary for this episode, one of them had remarked something about the episode being filmed in September. [1]

1.09 Early-Mid Oct 2005 Exif data on promo pics showing the boys with Missouri (and later John with Missouri) show a date of 10/6/05. [1]
1.10 Mid-Late Oct 2005 A script for auction has shown a final/blue draft date of October 18, 2005. Filming probably took place around this date or shortly thereafter. Plus Exif data on promo pics (mainly the scene of confrontation between Angry!Sam and Dean) show a date of 10/24/05. [1]
1.11 Early-Mid Nov 2005 There was a fan report dated around November 8 that mentioned SPN filming in a certain location. It sounded like it was one of the scenes of Dean and the sheriff. Also, Exif data on promo pics taken of the scene in the orchard (Sam, Dean and Emily) are dated 11/18/05. Finally, there are bits from the season 1 gag reel that show Sam and Dean at the bus stop where they said goodbye to Emily. They appear to be takes of the boys giving a holiday greeting. A clapboard shows the date of 11/15/05. [1]
1.12 Late Oct - Early Nov 2005 Filmed before 1.11. Exif data on promo pics showing the boys at Roy's healing tent, Sam and Dean in the rawhead's lair, and Sam outside Roy's house show dates of 11/4/05 and 11/8/05. [1]
1.13 Late Nov - Early Dec 2005 There is a fan report of the boys at the pier at Steveston dated 11/22/05. Also, Exif data on promo pics for the scene where the boys burn Cyrus' truck in the snow and the scene of the boys with Cassie and the mayor have the dates 12/1/05 and 11/30/05, respectively. [1]
1.14 Early-Mid Dec 2005 No promo pics from this one, but there is a scene during the season 1 gag reel that appears to be from the scene where the boys are questioning one of Max's old neighbors and Sam starts having his visions again. The clapboard goes down and shows a date of 12/9/05. [1]
1.15 Mid Dec 2005? Early January 2006 Not sure if this episode was started before the Christmas break and then resumed later, but Exif data on promo pics shows the date of 1/5/06. [1]

1.18 Early-Mid Feb 2006 No promo pics or fan reports – just a rough guess based on info from episodes before and after.
1.19 Mid-Late Feb 2006 Exif info on pics from the scene where Sam and Sarah battle Melanie Merchant have the date of 2/23/06. Exif info on a promo pic showing Dean asleep in the Impala (while Sam is checking out the Telescas' home) shows date of 2/24/06. There are also bits on the gag reel from the scene between Sam, Dean and Sarah at the motel room where the clapboard shows the date of 2/21/06. [1]
1.20 Late Feb - Early Mar 2006 This episode was being filmed during the filming of the Day in the Life of Jared and Jensen featurette from the season 1 DVDs. Jensen mentions in it that his birthday is the next day, meaning it must have been filmed on 2/28/06. Exif data on promo pics showing the confrontation between Sam and John show a date of 3/2/06. [1]
1.21 Mid-Late Mar 2006 There are pics taken on set of Jared and Jensen both holding the baby who played Rosie. The Exif data on these pics shows a date of 3/17/06. [1]
1.22 Late Mar - Early Apr 2006 Exif data from pics showing the boys' confrontation with YED!John show the date of 4/2 and 4/3/06 [1]

2.02 24 Jul - approx 2 Aug 2006 Fan pics taken on location of the two scenes at Bobby's junkyard (both the opening scene of Dean fixing the Impala and the end scene where Sam admits he's not alright) contain Exif data that shows the date 7/24/06. There are also fan reports that place two carnival scenes being filmed on 7/25 and 7/26/06. Promo pics showing the boys meeting Ellen and Jo at the Roadhouse have Exif data with the date 7/27/06. Finally, there is a bit during the season 2 gag reel where they are trying to film the scene where the boys are sitting in the beat up van outside the house of the family with the little girl who saw the clown. 2.07 Late Sep - Early Oct 2006 Linda Blair appeared briefly with the boys during the CW Launch Party on 9/18/06 and it was said that she would be working with them “soon.” Exif data from promo pics of various scenes show dates of 9/26/06 and 9/28/06. [1]

2.13 Early Dec 2006 There are fan reports dated approx. 12/7/06 that mention the boys filming in a church. [1]

2.15 Early-Mid Jan 2007 There are fan reports and/or pics from 1/8/07 in a bar, presumably the location in which Sam and Dean interview the frat boy. Exif data on promo pics of the scene with the boys and the Trickster have the date 1/11/07. [1]

2.19 Mid-Late Feb 2007 Exif data from promo pics of boys in the prison yard have the date 2/27/07. There was also a fan report that noted they were filming this episode on Jensen's birthday (3/1), and how in the prison yard everyone started singing Happy Birthday to him. [1]
2.20 Early-Mid Mar 2007 Exif data from promo pics of the dinner scene in Dean's AU show the date 3/19/07. [1]
2.21 Late Mar 2007 guess based on the previous episode. No promo pics, although a blogger's set visit seems to point to the fact that they were filming 2x21 and 2x22 together (different scenes from each on different days). [1]
2.22 Late Mar - 5 Apr (approx) 2007 Blogger's set visit was on 3/29/07 while they were filming this episode. Blogger mentioned they were filming the opening scene where Dean is talking to Sam's corpse. Exif data on pics of the boys taken during this set visit have the date 3/29/07.
