Gen as a term in media fandom can be confusing as it can be in regards to either a genre of fan works or as a rating for the same fan works. As a rating it is related to the MPAA rating of G for General Audiences. It is slowly becoming primarily a genre reflection rather than a rating, but it is still not uncommon (depending on the fandom) to see:
Rating: Gen Category: Het (or slash)
In which case the category is not "Gen" but the displayed relationships are so mild as to be inoffensive to any age group.
Gen [genre] means any kind of fan fiction that doesn't mention any romantic and/or sexual relationships whatsoever.
Gen [rating] is used to indicate any piece of fan fiction, fan art, or vid that is suitable for all audiences.
The Supernatural Gen Fandom
Just as prolific as the Slash Fandom is the Gen fandom. There are tons of fic to read about the Winchester boys and their hunting gigs. Very popular: Stories about the wee Winchesters, meaning stories about Sam and Dean growing up, as well as stories about the relationship between the characters.
