God is the deity responsible for creation of the universe. At an unknown period of time in the past, He abandoned Heaven, intervening in the affairs of humanity occasionally. His full potential remains unknown, but He is extremely powerful, and is thought to be omnipotent and omniscient. His sibling Amara is the only being as old and strong as He is, alongside Death, who at one time was seen as His equal.

History

There's a value, a glory, in creation that's greater and truer than my pride or my ego. Call it grace! Call it being! Whatever it is, it didn't come from My hands. It was there waiting to be born! It just is! As you and I just were! Since you've been freed, I know that you've seen it... Felt it. – Chuck to Amara, 11.22 We Happy Few

In the beginning, there was God and the Darkness. They were previously one harmonious cosmic entity which split apart into two cosmic forces balancing light and darkness. As a result, it created the Big Bang and brought existence into being.

The Darkness initially was content with existence only involving herself and her brother, but God began to create worlds to satisfy Himself and to show His sister there could be more to existence than just the two of them, but for every world He would create, the Darkness would destroy it because she hated how He wanted something different from his only sibling out of ego. Knowing that destroying the Darkness would cause a fatal disruption in the Cosmic Balance, God would eventually go on to create the archangels, and battle her until they finally managed to trick the Darkness and just barely lock her away. He then entrusted the lock and key — a special Mark — to His most favored son, Lucifer.

With His sister locked away, God, as Metatron put it, "got down to unfettered creation", making the "Prime" universe the starting point of His own epic story, bringing all sorts of creatures into existence to determine the focal point of His chronicle. During this time, He would go on to create the first beasts, the Leviathans. However, God became concerned over their endless hunger, and so, He created Purgatory to seal them away. Afterwards, as Crowley put it, hellhounds were made to be "the Creator's best friend", but their viciousness proved to be too much for God, which led to Him having them all destroyed. Unknown to Him, Lucifer would rescue a pregnant hound named Ramsey, allowing the species to thrive. Soon after, He forged the angels and their classes, creating the Host of Heaven. Anna Milton would reveal to Dean Winchester that only four angels have ever seen God, while the rest of the Host only took His existence based on faith, and those who lacked it were tortured into submission or killed outright.

God would then go on to create the soul, and bestow it to humanity, dubbing them His most beautiful and loved creations, in the form of Adam and Eve, who were sent to live in the Garden of Eden, making them part of his first story. As humans multiplied, God ordered all of His angels to bow before humanity and love them more than Him, but Lucifer refused to bow down as the other angels did, with his actions leading to humanity's expulsion from the Garden. On God's command, Lucifer was cast out of Heaven by Michael and imprisoned in the Cage, but not before Lucifer created the first demons and passed the Mark to Cain, who killed his brother Abel to satisfy a deal made with the fallen archangel. By this point, it was too late to contain Lucifer's corruption of humanity, giving rise to countless acts of evil committed by humans throughout history. God eventually realized that everything only stayed the same as long as he kept hovering over humanity, which led to Him stepping away to let them find themselves on their own.

According to the goddess Fortuna, when humans first gained sentience, they worshiped nature around them rather than recognize God's "beneficence." As an act of spite against His creations, God created the pagan gods as scapegoats to take the blame whenever things went wrong for the humans, but when humanity began making epic stories about them, His ego could only take so much before making His presence known. God would take to hiding behind whatever religion was the most popular at the time, leaving the pagan gods to wander the Earth and stoop to taking whatever scraps they could find until they became forgotten or killed by humans. Over time, most of these gods have forgotten their true origins, many of them believing themselves to be superior compared to other gods in opposing belief systems. Amara also stated that God encouraged religions as monuments to His ego, promising any and all worshippers "the fearful safety" if they adored Him, out of fear of being cast aside along with any other non-believers. Michael even had all the angels and former prophets burnish His image on the Earth as the all-knowing, all-seeing, all "caring" God, essentially making the archangel responsible for creating the Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam).

God would also go on to make alternate universes, but to ensure His original universe would thrive in His absence, He was forced to write Himself into the fabric of that reality, indirectly creating his only weakness, making it possible for Him to die one day like everything else. Capable of creating an infinite number of new universes, God eventually created the multiverse, but when He became dissatisfied with a world, He developed the habit of moving onto another universe to start again, essentially catching the writer's bug; the desire to write and create more than anything else.

As it became possible for Him to die one day, God became worried about humanity if even He couldn't protect them, so He revealed Himself to Metatron and chose him to be the Scribe of God and dictate His Word, essentially leaving instructions on how to defend humanity from angels, demons, and Leviathans if ever they tried taking over the planet. Metatron finished their work before God departed from Heaven out of sheer disappointment of His creations, leaving both Heaven and Earth in the care of Michael and Raphael for millennia. When Michael assumed command of the angels, he and Raphael started scheming, planning to take control of the universe to spite God's departure, causing Metatron to flee to protect God's secrets and prevent them from succeeding sooner.

After running Heaven and Earth for millennia, Michael began enacting the plan to use the Winchesters to start the Apocalypse under the guise of bringing paradise to Earth to manipulate the angels and humans on their side, even working with Lilith to free Lucifer from the Cage with the hopes that their plan would draw God's attention and bring Him back. However by 2009, both Uriel and Raphael among many other angels lost faith in their maker, stating that God must be dead considering what happened throughout the 20th Century, although most angels believed that He still existed like Castiel and countless others. During His sabbatical, the angel Joshua, the Keeper of Heaven's Garden, was the only known angel to have had conversations with Him out of loneliness. God offers His aid to the Winchesters as the prophet "Chuck Shurley" to prevent the Apocalypse from coming to pass, as well as to have a front row seat to the action. As Chuck, He writes the Winchester Gospels under the guise of the Supernatural Books to record their story as well as leading the Winchesters to trap Michael and Lucifer in the Cage alongside Sam and Adam.

When the Darkness was freed by Rowena and Sam with the Book of the Damned, she threatened to destroy all of creation to get her brother's attention and confront Him for everything He did to her. Realizing He could not defeat her, Chuck would retreat to His own bar where he planned to write his memoirs before ceding to Amara until Metatron convinces Him otherwise. By the end, Chuck and Amara would reconcile with the help of Dean Winchester.

God reappeared after Castiel prayed to Him using Joshua's Amulet to help the Winchesters rein in Jack Kline after His grandson burned off his soul to use Enochian magic and destroy the Apocalypse World version of Michael. During His time away with Amara, Chuck revealed that he was "everywhere and nowhere, to the edge of the universe and beyond" as well as having saw Springsteen on Broadway. Chuck and Amara's reconciliation was short-lived, however, as the two soon agreed to take some time apart in the Winchesters' universe due to Amara having grown tired of her brother's failure to change for the better and wanting to try out new earthly experiences, particularly Keno and Craps. Eventually, when Dean refuses to kill Jack, Chuck reveals his true colors by killing his grandson and unleashing all the damned souls of Hell, declaring "Welcome to the End."

Despite Rowena, Castiel, and the Winchesters managing to seal Hell again at the cost of the former's life, God was undeterred and began plotting their demise, intending to make one brother kill the other. God resurrected Lilith as an emissary, having her destroy the Equalizer for Him and retrieving Michael, who was released from the Cage within Adam's vessel, until the archangel killed her again. Since He was unable to monitor the Winchesters in His weakened state, God manipulated Sam to resurrect Eileen Leahy so He could keep an eye on the Winchesters through her eyes. When they seek the help of Michael, who was disturbed by their revelations and the alternate version of himself, God lured Sam into a trap where He revealed the dystopian future where Sam and Dean succeeded in trapping Him. Believing God, Sam loses hope in the plan and foils the attempt to trap Him, enabling God to heal their wounds and leave the Earth to prepare for the end.

God began wiping out every other universe He created, eventually returning to the Prime universe to complete his story, intending to merge with Amara once more and use their collective power to reboot everything once He was finished with the Winchesters. However, God was eventually defeated and stripped of His powers by Jack, leaving God as a powerless, soulless mortal to live out the rest of His life, grow old, get sick, and die unmourned and forgotten just like all the humans he selfishly abandoned. Subsequently, Jack reversed all of the damage that God had done, including the destruction of the Multiverse.

Following his death and ascension to Heaven, Dean discovered that the Impala gave him the ability to visit alternate universes so long as he doesn't interfere. During his time exploring all of existence, he discovers that Chuck had a failsafe prepared in case of His defeat: the Akrida, an interdimensional race of parasitic monsters and his last creations. They were created to finish His work by swarming and consuming all of existence in case he lost to the Winchesters. To protect Sam as he lives his life on Earth, Dean decided to step in, uniting his parents and several other hunters in an alternate universe targeted by the Akrida, and guiding them from the sidelines as they learn how to fight against them using the Men of Letters' research into their species, having defeated them once before. Eventually, the Akrida were decimated when Mary Campbell ran over their queen with the Impala, foiling God's final plan and saving the multiverse. Jack and Bobby appear to pick up Dean, and while his interference went against the new rules, the New God acknowledges that there's always going to be one last case for hunters, letting Dean finish what he started before they leave. Jack presumably goes on to restore the universes previously destroyed by the Akrida, nullifying Chuck's failsafe.

Characteristics

As the most powerful being in all of creation, second to His sister the Darkness, God is a nigh-omniscient and nigh-omnipotent being capable of feats such as healing, resurrection, teleportation… damn near anything. His sister, the Darkness, is the only being in existence that equals Him in raw power and capable of mortally wounding Him. If God were to die, then there would be a disruption in the Cosmic Balance which would lead to the end of all existence. It's also known that with strong enough warding, it's possible to hide oneself from even God, as evidenced by His and Amara's use of wards to stay hidden from each other; as well as Chuck being unable to sense a nearly-human Gabriel who was using a potent cloaking spell made by the shaman Sergei, while he was hiding in Monte Carlo and being held prisoner by Asmodeus. If God is significantly weakened, the same binding spell God and the archangels cast upon the Darkness to lock her away could also be used to imprison Chuck. According to Ketch, even everything the British Men of Letters had on God was purely theoretical, with nothing definite regarding a weapon or spell that can potentially injure or kill Him.

In various versions of the Prime universe, He would take a specific interest in Sam and Dean Winchester, claiming that out of every variant of Sam and Dean that exists in every dimension of the multiverse, the Winchesters in the Prime universe were His "favorite show." Even after revealing Himself, God still preferred to be called "Chuck" as being called "God" and treated with praise makes Him "deeply uncomfortable." Chuck tells the Winchesters that He only interfered directly when things got apocalyptic on Earth, to the point where the main threat rivaled His power. Despite this, God maintained his divine interference in secret to maintain control over His story and watching His creations from the sidelines to keep Himself entertained by their actions.

Metatron had described Chuck's memoirs as "angry with a side of bitter," and while writing His memoirs, Chuck would show His more wrathful side to Metatron, with Metatron claiming an act of violence was what allowed him to recognize Chuck as the God of old. Both Amara and Lucifer described Him as narcissistic, only caring about things going His way, regardless of anyone else's opinions. Despite this, Lucifer calls God "a master strategist", considering He was capable of messing with time and planting visions to gain the desired outcome for his story by manipulating his characters to make things go the way He wanted them to, regardless of mercy or personal cost, in order to quench his ego. Chuck would grow visibly agitated whenever things didn't go his way, often stooping to rage quit before He moved on to another universe and started from scratch. Despite being convinced of His superiority and victory, God created the Akrida as a failsafe to finish His work, just in case the Winchesters actually managed to defeat Him.

Former powers and abilities

• Apporting – With a simple snap of His fingers, God was capable of teleporting anyone or anything to a destination of His choosing, as evidenced when He saved Sam and Dean from Lucifer's release by teleporting them onto an plane.
• Cleansing – God was able to cleanse Sam of his demon blood addiction, as well as the town of Hope Springs, Idaho, of a rabid infection.
• Creation – When the Darkness was locked away, God was able to create multiple universes as well as the various realms such as Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory.
• Healing – God possessed the ability to heal any type of injury.
• Mind control – Prophets typically speak the word of God indirectly, but in certain cases God was capable of completely taking over a prophet's mind and using them directly as a mouthpiece.
• Nigh-omniscience – As creator of the known universe (and multiverse), God was all-knowing and could see and hear all things in existence. His omniscience also allowed God to "give" Himself any abilities He so wished, such as how to play guitar or speak French.
• Nigh-omnipotence – God was one of the most powerful beings in existence, second only to His sister the Darkness.
• Power negation – God was able to render Lucifer powerless in the presence of Sam and Dean as a safeguard to prevent him from hurting the Winchesters.
• Power transference – Certain objects that God has come into contact with can become imbued with His power. These items are known as a Hand of God, and are highly destructive, and so powerful that if a human were to come into contact with one they would be annihilated by its power.
• Prayer – God, like the angels, was capable of hearing all the prayers in the world. He rarely, if ever, answered them.
• Precognition – As an omniscient being, God could see into the future to a far greater degree than that of the archangels, allowing Him to masquerade convincingly as a prophet. He was aware that Lucifer would possess Sam and that this decision would lead to his downfall, something that Lucifer himself couldn't foresee. God was also able to foresee what would become the future if the Winchesters and Castiel succeeded in locking Him away, and was able to use a special pocket watch to show Sam a vision of this future. God called this "extending My omniscience" to Sam.
• Protective aura – God could cast an aura of protection on Sam and Dean to prevent them from being harmed while they recruit their allies and adversaries to battle Amara. This aura could be detected by witches.
• Pathokinesis – As seen with Jack and Dean, Chuck was capable of stimulating certain unwanted feelings in people to coax them into doing what He wants for His story and making it seem like those actions are their own. Chuck used this to have Jack kill Mary and fuel Dean's rage to coax him into killing Jack and Sam as part of His story. Dean said it was like smelling "blood in the water" and that he "couldn't snap out of it."
• Resurrection – God could bring anyone or anything back to life. Having "rebuilt" Castiel "more times than [He] can remember." However, archangels, being "the stuff of primordial creation" take more time and effort. Despite the Cosmic Entity stating that God has no power over the Empty, He was able to resurrect the demon Lilith even while in a weakened state. God was eventually able to resurrect Lucifer in an effort to get Chuck's Death Book despite His previous claim of of how difficult resurrecting an archangel is. However, God accomplished this feat after absorbing the Darkness and her power.
• Souls – While God created the soul, Chuck said that He was unable to restore Jack's soul, as souls are "complicated", even for Him. However, the veracity of His claim could neither be confirmed nor denied.
• Smiting – With a snap of His fingers, God could smite anything, including a Nephilim like Jack.
• Warding – While acting as the prophet Chuck Shurley, God was able to conceal Himself from the angels, preventing Dean's Amulet from glowing white hot in His presence. This warding ability extended to God being able to conceal His location from even His sister, Amara.
• Telekinesis – When angered, God showed the ability to throw Metatron clear across a room with no physical gestures.
• Telepathy – God was capable of reading minds, having used this ability to write the Supernatural books, which transcribed the inner thoughts as well as actions of Sam and Dean Winchester.
• Teleportation – God was capable of teleporting Himself anywhere in existence.

Weaknesses

While God is one of the most powerful beings in existence, He's not invulnerable. The original Death stated to Dean Winchester that one day God will die, and he will reap Him too.

• Binding spell – Michael revealed that what God and the archangels did to the Darkness could also be done to Chuck in His weakened state. The spell requires myrrh, cassia, rock rose, and the nectar of a Leviathan Blossom, which grows exclusively in Purgatory. This spell also required someone to bear a similar mark to the Mark of Cain and could only be reversed if the mark is destroyed. In an alternate possible future shown to Sam by God, the Winchesters and Castiel managed to succeed in locking God away using the spell.
• The Darkness – As God's equal, Amara was the only known being capable of mortally wounding God. However, with His death comes an imbalance in the Cosmic Balance, tipping the scales to the Darkness, which can have catastrophic ramifications and render the universe into nothingness.
• The Equalizer – It is unknown if this gun was truly capable of killing God. However, the gun being used on Chuck did weaken and diminish His powers, effectively stranding Him on Earth. Being shot created a bullet hole in His shoulder which caused Him pain, as well as a connection to Sam Winchester due to the weapon using a wave of multidimensional energy across a balanced quantum link between the target and the shooter. After Sam gave up hope of beating God, which Chuck described as "festering" in Sam's end of the link, God was able to heal both of their wounds and regain His full power.
• Free will – Certain beings with strong enough willpower can resist the urge to give in to any emotions stimulated by God. Despite Chuck's best efforts, Dean managed to regain control of his emotions and avoided killing Jack and Sam. With free will, Chuck's omniscience / foresight can also be hindered, as He had told Sam "with the exact right roll of the dice", Sam could have succeeded in their plan to imprison Him, so long as Dean and Castiel didn't screw up their part either.
• Jack Kline – As the half-human son of Lucifer, Jack is immensely powerful, to the point that God was worried when he was loose upon the Earth and soulless. On the other hand, God was able to kill Jack effortlessly when He decided to do so. Jack was resurrected by Billie, and claimed that he could become powerful enough to kill God if he followed the plan laid out for him by her. After becoming a power vacuum for celestial energy, Jack was eventually able to strip God of His powers, leaving God mortal, powerless, and human.
• Warding – With powerful enough warding and spells, a being can hide their presence from God.

Episodes

1.12 Faith

Dean is healed by Roy Le Grange, who believes God is healing through him, when in fact his powers are actually connected to a reaper his wife is manipulating. When Dean asks why he was saved, Roy tells him he was guided by the Lord because he saw in Dean's heart that he was "A young man with an important purpose. A job to do. And it isn’t finished."

2.13 Houses of the Holy

When people claim that an angel told them to kill, Sam reveals that he believes in God and that he prays. A fatalist Dean says: "There's no higher power, there's no God. There's just chaos and violence, random unpredictable evil, that comes outta nowhere, rips you to shreds." When Dean witnesses a man who attacked a woman killed in a freak accident, he wonders whether he had seen "the hand of God" at work.

4.01 Lazarus Rising

Castiel reveals that he raised Dean from Hell because "God commanded it." This may or may not have been true as God left Heaven at some point, and it seems more likely that the Host of Heaven ordered Castiel and other angels to rescue Dean. As the 66 seals are broken, Zachariah reveals that the angels plan to allow the Apocalypse to begin. When Dean asks where God is, Zachariah replies "God has left the building."

5.02 Good God, Y'All

After Lucifer is freed, Castiel states that aside from Michael, God is the only one strong enough to defeat Lucifer and end the Apocalypse, and so he begins a quest to find Him. Castiel thinks that while God has been absent, it was He who resurrected him and saved the boys from Lucifer. He reveals that Dean's amulet is very powerful and that it "burns hot in God's presence," and so borrows it from Dean to help in his quest.

Raphael claims that God is dead, as this is the only explanation for the horrible things have happened on Earth over the last hundred years and God's continuing silence. Dean encourages Castiel, who still believes that God's not dead, to continue his search.

5.16 Dark Side of the Moon

While in Heaven, Sam and Dean seek out an angel in the Garden of Eden for information. Joshua confirms that God is on Earth, but also tells them that He no longer cares about the Apocalypse, thinking it isn't His problem. Joshua says he thinks God talks to him because He can "sympathize gardener to gardener." He also confirms that God has intervened on Sam and Dean's behalf (put them on the plane, cleared Sam of demon blood, brought back Castiel, granted them salvation in Heaven), saying that, "It's more than He's intervened in a long time."

5.22 Swan Song

Chuck Shurley begins writing his final book, titled "Swan Song", with an explanation of the Impala's history and significance. He is later called by Dean for the location of Lucifer and Michael's final battle, which he readily gives. Chuck finally appears dressed in white, musing on the difficulty of getting endings right. He then disappears, leading viewers to believe he may, in fact, be God. God also resurrects Castiel a second time and grants him greater powers. Later, Castiel wonders when talking to Dean if perhaps God had actually helped them more than they realize.

6.17 My Heart Will Go On

Atropos makes an assumption that God Himself decides a person's death and then passes the details on to the Fates.

6.20 The Man Who Would Be King

Castiel prays to God revealing what he has done in order to defeat Raphael and demands a sign that he is on the right path.

7.17 The Born-Again Identity

It is revealed that God apparently resurrected Castiel for a third time with all of his powers intact but no memory despite his briefly declaring himself God.

8.21 The Great Escapist

Metatron reveals that before God left Heaven, He enlisted Metatron, a secretarial angel, to take down instructions on His various creations. When God left, the archangels despaired and then decided to take over the universe themselves, a plan Naomi seemed to be following since their demise. God also may have granted Metatron special powers as His scribe because Metatron is able to erase angel wards due to his elevated status.

11.20 Don't Call Me Shurley

"Okay, yeah, please. All the kneeling and stuff, it's always made me deeply, deeply uncomfortable. Just don't use the G-word okay? Just-Just call me Chuck."

After being transported to BG's Canteen, Metatron quickly realizes that the bar is a construct created by God. When he finds Chuck Shurley sitting at a booth, he believes he is being punished by God by having to spend eternity in a "crappy bar with a hack writer," and proceeds to go in on Chuck's writing. Chuck eventually reveals to Metatron that He is, in fact, God. As Metatron begins groveling on his knees, Chuck tells him to stop as the kneeling and being called "God" make Him uncomfortable, telling Metatron to call Him Chuck. After Chuck pours a glass of whiskey for Metatron, Metatron asks Chuck what He has been up to. Chuck reveals that He started a blog about cats, signed up for Snapchat, started a new series of books titled Revolution (though He doesn't think they will go anywhere) as well as having traveled and dated a few people. He also explains how He was able to deactivate Dean's amulet so they wouldn't suspect Him of being God during the Apocalypse, and He reactivates it before putting it away. Chuck reveals that He wanted to finish His autobiography and needs Metatron's help to do it, which he accepts. After reading it, Metatron points out that it's missing a few things such as details and balance. He tells him to write for an audience of one and reveal who He really is.

Chuck explains that nature was the closest thing that was as good as or better than Himself or His sister, since it knows that it's sometimes better to start from scratch. Metatron discovers that Chuck was going to let Amara destroy the universe, and tells Him off about how he was never a coward when he tried to play God. Chuck reveals that He is done watching humanity's failures and wants to let Amara win. As Chuck begins to finish the last few pages of His autobiography, Metatron tells Him that He is wrong about humanity because He knows that they are better than He is and understands what they are capable of in both positive and negative ways. Chuck, touched and clearly guilty Himself for losing faith in humanity, decides to help Sam and Dean deal with the Darkness after finishing His book. He reverses the effects of the rabid infection in Hope Springs, Idaho. He even sends Dean's amulet into Sam's jacket pocket to allow them to find Him.

11.21 All in the Family

"I know you had a complicated upbringing, Dean. But don't confuse me with your dad."

Chuck teleports Sam and Dean back into the Men of Letters Bunker along with Himself to prove to them that He actually is God and even confirms it with the help of Kevin Tran. After sending Kevin's soul to Heaven, Sam talks about how he was praying to Him, but was unaware if He was actually listening. Dean tells Him about how humanity had been suffering for thousands of years while God did nothing. Chuck tells him that He has been helping them for ages and decided that in order to allow humanity to thrive, that He needed to take a step back and let them find their way. He also believes that despite everything, things have gotten better from His point of view.

God tells them that the only reason He came to help them was because the Darkness was a force beyond human comprehension, and He tells them about how awful it was to always do what Amara wanted. When Sam tells Him that they might need Lucifer's help, God tells them that He doesn't trust him since he could have formed an alliance with Amara. He is later seen watching a curling tournament on Dean's computer while eating Chinese food when Sam and Dean come back from Lewis, Oklahoma, with the latest prophet, Professor Donatello Redfield. After meeting up with Metatron, he tells them that Chuck is going to give Himself up to Amara and even shows them His autobiography which is in the form of a suicide note. Chuck is seen watching kids playing in a sandbox when Dean comes over to confront Him about surrendering to Amara. Chuck tells him that He will become imprisoned and let Amara do what she wants with Him in exchange for allowing the universe to continue to thrive. Chuck also tells Dean that if she tries to destroy everything, then His chosen, like Sam and Dean, will step up and reveals that He saved Sam and Dean in 5.01 Sympathy for the Devil because they are the firewall between light and darkness.

After Sam, Donatello, and Metatron rescue Lucifer, God is able to teleport them back to the Bunker in the Impala. Lucifer sees God for the first time in millennia and remarks that He changed, God says the same thing and instantly heals the wounds he had to endure from Amara's torture.

11.22 We Happy Few

"I did what had to do. To create the world, I had to lock Amara away. And when the Mark corrupted you and I saw that you posed a threat to humankind, I did the same with you."

God tells Lucifer about how He healed him and to be reasonable, but Lucifer doesn't want to hear it. He believes that He came back the moment Sam and Dean called for Him, but they point out that it wasn't the case and reminds him that they saved him. He tries to turn them into dust with a snap of his fingers, but God added a safeguard that would prevent him from doing that. Lucifer tells God off about how He still wouldn't apologize to Him before leaving and taking refuge in Sam's bedroom. Chuck later tells Sam and Dean that He can't apologize about imprisoning Lucifer since He doesn't feel sorry because He did it for humanity, but they remind Him that the end is approaching and they need to talk.

God decides to talk to Lucifer and He tells him that He did what He had to do since the Mark corrupted him and made him into a threat to humanity. Lucifer berates Him about how He betrayed him and threw him away after the Mark changed him. Sam agrees with Lucifer since all he wants is an apology and God is too concerned about being right to do so. Frustrated, Chuck teleports Sam and Dean to the crow's nest in the Bunker to continue their discussion in private. God tells Lucifer that the reason He gave him the Mark was because he was His favorite and He thought he was strong enough to bear it, but He punished him out of guilt after He saw what the Mark did to him. After finally apologizing, Lucifer forgives Him and they decide to focus on more important matters: the Darkness. God and Lucifer tell Sam and Dean about the Cosmic Balance being one of the reasons that Amara was imprisoned rather than destroyed. He tells them that they would need the rest of the archangels to have a shot against her. God tells them that Michael is in no condition to fight, and since archangels are the stuff of primordial creation, it would take time that they don't have to bring Gabriel and Raphael back, even for Him.

Sam and Dean decide to bring angels, demons, and witches into the fight to make up for the missing archangels. God meets them in an abandoned power plant and tell them to strike against Amara when she arrives. Shock and awe. Sam reveals that he and God talked about imprisoning Amara again by restoring the Mark of Cain onto Sam's arm since Dean can't bear it anymore due to already being tainted by its power. After she had to endure an attack by Rowena and the rest of the witches, the angels with their angel smiting, and Crowley and his demon horde, she barges in where she lays eyes on her brother for the first time in eons. As she approaches Him, Lucifer stabs her with his spear and tries to finish her off, but God convinces him to back down. Chuck apologies to her for everything, but Amara doesn't want to hear it and tells Him that the real reason He banished her was because He couldn't stand holding in His ego. Chuck tells her that there is a value in creation that is greater than His ego and that the materials for creation were there waiting to be born. Chuck apologizes again before beginning the transference of the Mark from Amara's shoulder to Sam's arm, but Amara interrupts Him before the transfer could be completed and rips Lucifer out of Castiel before He could stop her. She tells God that she would rather die before going back to her prison before striking Him with tendrils of black smoke, terminally weakening Him and causing a disruption in the Cosmic Balance. She tells them that God will fade away into nothing, but not before He watches all of creation turn to ash.

11.23 Alpha and Omega

"Earth will be fine. It's got you... and Sam."

After leaving the power plant, they discover that the sun is dying because God is dying. God, weakened by Amara's attack, tells them that she is the only one who can save Him and that the disruption in the Cosmic Balance will destroy everything. He teleports everyone back to the Bunker where everyone almost seems to have given up, though God appears to be forming a bond with Rowena, discussing parenthood. Sam berates everyone about doing nothing while the universe slowly dies and decides that since they can no longer imprison her, they have to kill her. God reveals that the Darkness has one weakness; light. The amount of light it would take to destroy her would be 10,000 supernovas in one strike. Castiel tells them that the energy in souls is equal to 100 suns. Rowena believes that with enough souls, she can build a bomb that should destroy her. Sam and Dean head over to Waverly Hills Sanitarium to collect the souls of vengeful spirits, but they are followed back to the Bunker by Billie. She decides to help them get all the souls they need by raiding the Veil. After collecting a few hundred thousand souls into a crystal, Rowena channels that energy into Dean since he is the only one with a personal connection to Amara to get close enough to her. They all visit Mary's grave in Greensville, Illinois, before sending Dean to Amara, who is located in a park watching the sun die. God tells them that despite everything, Amara is still His sister. After saying goodbye to everyone, God sends Dean to Amara.

God and everyone else wait in a bar called "The Lazy Shag" for Dean to finish off the Darkness. Dean tells her about how God doesn't want her dead and that despite everything, she needs her brother, just like he needs Sam. Dean tells her to put aside her hatred for Him and ask herself what she really wants. She summons God when Sam went to get Him water and tells Him about how she hated Him for wanting something else that wasn't her. She finally realizes that what God made is beautiful and tells Him that she wants them to be a family again. Chuck says that He wants the same thing and they hold hands, and their combined power restores the sun. Amara heals Chuck of all His wounds and they decide to have a family meeting. God takes the bomb out of Dean and tells him that Earth will be fine as long as it has him and Sam. Amara thanks Dean for giving her what she needed most and says that she wants to do the same for him. Both God and Amara ascend to the heavens, and disappear in columns of intertwined light and darkness.

14.10 Nihilism

While imprisoned in the Men of Letters Bunker, Michael from Apocalypse World speaks with Castiel, and reveals that in his universe with his Lucifer, they had hoped that after their fight God would return and give them answers for why He left. But upon Lucifer's defeat, nothing happened. When Michael took over Dean Winchester and learned of Chuck Shurley, he came to the theory that as God saw Himself as a writer, His world and Castiel's world are just drafts and when He sees that they are flawed, He moves on to another one. Michael tells Castiel he plans on destroying as many worlds in different universes as he can until he finally catches up with Him.

14.17 Game Night

Castiel seeks the help of Sister Jo in trying to contact God, due her working as Joshua's right hand in Heaven before being demoted. Jo tells Castiel that Joshua never talked to God, it was God that talked to Joshua, but reveals that after the Fall there was a rumor Joshua put out a call to God, and He answered.

The two travel to Orlando's Emporium, where Methuselah allows them to look for the object Joshua used to make contact. After searching all night, and nearly giving up, Castiel spots an amulet similar to Dean's, which Methuselah tells him Joshua forged after the Fall. Grasping it in his hand, Castiel prays to God for help, but receives no response. Methuselah tells them this happened to Joshua too.

14.20 Moriah

"Fine! That's the way you want it? Story's over. Welcome to the End."

After being denied entrance to Hell to study the Cage by a demon, Castiel is surprised by Chuck's sudden appearance, who tells Cas He is responding to his prayer. Chuck soon takes Castiel to Sam and Dean at Mirror Universe, where the office has descended into chaos due to no one being able to lie anymore. In a conference room, Chuck tries to explain where He's been through song, but has His guitar smashed by Dean, and when Dean angrily demands to know where Chuck has been, He snaps at Dean before quickly calming down and teleporting everyone to the Bunker.

He explains that He has been traveling all over the universe with Amara, who is currently in Reno, Nevada. Chuck undoes what Jack did, making it as if the chaos never happened. When asked if He can stop Jack, Chuck says He can't, but they can and creates a handgun that is capable of killing Jack, but with the catch that whomever fires it will also die.

Later, while playing with Michael's archangel blade, Sam asks if He merely creates other worlds and abandons them. Chuck denies it, saying that Sam and Dean are His favorites because they're so interesting. Chuck tells Sam that they need to focus on Jack, which makes him realize that Chuck is afraid of His grandson. He reveals that He knows where Jack is and that Dean already left.

At the cemetery, Sam tries to convince Chuck to stop Dean, but he realizes that Chuck is enjoying it. Ultimately, Dean can't bring himself to fire the gun at Jack and tosses it aside. Chuck, who wants Jack dead, eggs Dean onto pick up the gun, to no avail. Sam realizes that what Michael said was true -- Chuck has been manipulating the Winchesters' lives as part of a sick story. Chuck denies it again and tells Dean to pick up the gun and use it to kill Jack in exchange for bringing Mary back, but Dean refuses, saying that Mary would not want to be brought back at the cost of Jack's life or Dean's. No longer wanting any part of His story, Dean tells Chuck to go to Hell. Chuck decides to kill Jack Himself via smiting, but Sam takes the gun and shoots Chuck in the shoulder, injuring himself, but causing no real harm to Chuck. Angry, He decides to acquiesce to the Winchesters' demands and end the world by releasing the souls from Hell.

15.02 Raising Hell

"Hey, don't test me. I front the group. You sing backup."

After unleashing Hell, Chuck pays a visit to Amara in Reno, Nevada, where He smites her masseuse -- much to Amara's annoyance. Chuck attempts to get Amara to go off-world with Him and create a new species; Amara quickly realizes that Chuck is weak and diminished and can't leave without her help.

As Chuck is checking his wound, He touches it, sending a shock of pain which Sam Winchester also feels. As Amara prepares to leave by herself, she tells Chuck she has no interest in helping Him as she has changed, while He remained the same petty narcissist. She departs, leaving Chuck on His own.

Chuck begins writing His final story.

15.04 Atomic Monsters

"But great, right? I can see it now -- "Supernatural: The End". And the cover is just a gravestone that says "Winchester". The fans are gonna love it. Well?"

15.05 Proverbs 17:3

Lilith reveals to Sam and Dean that she had been brought back by God to manipulate Sam and Dean as well as retrieve and destroy the Equalizer.

15.07 Last Call

After probing Sam's bullet wound from the Equalizer, Castiel and Eileen learn that Sam's soul is tethered to Chuck. After returning to consciousness, Sam tells Dean that he saw Chuck's memories and that He is weak, believing they have a chance to beat God.

15.08 Our Father, Who Aren't in Heaven

"You went easy on the rum this time, right? OK, cool. ‘Cause, you know, you don’t want me cranky."

15.09 The Trap

"Sam's visions -- they weren't drafts. They were memories. My memories. Other Sams and other Deans in other worlds. But guess what. Just like you, they didn't think they'd do it, either. But they did. And you will, too."

15.10 The Heroes' Journey

After the Winchesters begin experiencing normal people problems, Garth suggests that as they were the heroes of God's story, He protected them from such issues to keep the story from slowing down. Since Sam and Dean have lost favor with Him, God has "downgraded" them back to normal people.

15.11 The Gamblers

The Winchesters seek out a pool hall run by the Roman goddess of luck Fortuna to regain the luck God stole from them. Fortuna reveals that God actually created the pagan gods to have someone to take the blame when things went wrong, but He hides behind whatever religion is most popular these days. Recognizing Sam and Dean as true heroes, Fortuna restores their lost luck and gives them some advice about fighting God: "don't play His game, make Him play yours."

A resurrected Jack explains to Castiel and the Winchesters that Billie kept him hidden in the Empty until God left, at which point it was safe for him to return. However, Jack can't use his powers without drawing God's attention and revealing his return and getting killed again. Billie resurrected Jack and provided him with a plan that will eventually allow him to become strong enough to kill God Himself.

15.12 Galaxy Brain

"I don't need more! More things, more distractions? I need less. It's time to clear the board. All the other worlds, alternate realities, the subplots... the failed spin-offs... It's time to start cancelling shows."

Determined to wipe the slate clean, Chuck began destroying every single realm in the multiverse, save the Prime universe to prepare for "The End." Taking up residence on Earth 2 in a Radio Shed store, Chuck would go about this plan for weeks dismantling the various universes until he took his leave of Earth 2. At which point the planet was destroyed by a meteor shower.

15.17 Unity

"What part of omniscient do you people not understand? So I can't read my Death book. So what? I control space and time. Just plant a few visions, goad Death a little... mess with a few outcomes. And... bada-bing. I mean... They think they can kill me?"

15.18 Despair

Believing Billie has been killing their friends, Dean and Castiel confront her only to learn that she is dying and that what is happening is all Chuck's doing.

15.19 Inherit the Earth

"This... This... This is why you're my favorites. You know, for the first time, I have no idea what happens next. Is this where you kill me? I mean, I could never think of an ending where I lose. But this... after everything that I've done to you... to die at the hands of Sam Winchester... of Dean Winchester, the ultimate killer... It's kind of glorious."

The Winchesters Episodes

1.13 Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye

Dean: When I was driving, I caught wind of the Akrida. Turns out that they were one of Chuck's last creations.

Millie: Who's Chuck?

Dean: God. It's a long story, but uh… basically, he's a real dick. He left the Akrida behind to wipe out all of existence in case he failed. Well… he failed. Eventually, the Akrida were gonna make their way to my world, and I got family there, so I couldn't let that happen.

An Akrida possessing Latika Dar reveals to John, Mary, and Ada that the Akrida were created by "an angry God" as a failsafe, in case He was ever bested, to wipe out all life in every universe.

After the destruction of the Akrida, Dean reveals to the Monster Club that the Akrida were one of God's last creations. While driving through the multiverse, which was restored by Jack after Chuck's defeat, Dean discovered that Chuck had created the Akrida as a failsafe to eradicate all of existence in case He failed. Due to the threat to his own universe and, more importantly, Sam, Dean broke Jack's rule of no interference to bring the Monster Club together to successfully destroy the Akrida and defeat Chuck's final plan.

Chuck Is God

Well, there's only one explanation. Obviously, I'm a god. I'm definitely a god! A cruel, cruel, capricious god. – Chuck to Dean and Sam, 4.18 The Monster at the End of This Book

Chuck Was God?!

Following the season five finale, there was much debate amongst fans to whether Chuck was in fact God, and whether he had been so all along. While consensus was with Chuck as the Divine being - many fans started substituting Chuck's name for God's in expressions such as "Chuck be praised?" "Oh My Chuck - OMC" and "Thank Chuck" - not all agreed. Writer and Producer Sera Gamble on the God debate refused to either confirm or deny the speculation: "Don't ask me to squish the God debate! How many TV shows can say their fans are talking about THAT stuff?"

Chuck as a writer is the creator of the story of Sam and Dean Winchester in the form of the Supernatural books. He says when confronted with the real Sam and Dean that he "is a god," for all that he puts them through in the books happens in real life. This is explained by Castiel as Chuck being a prophet of God. Castiel says the Supernatural books will become known as the Winchester Gospels.

The metaphor in this episode is of the writer as creator. Chuck's pseudonym is Carver Edlund, a reference to Supernatural writers Jeremy Carver and Ben Edlund. The character is an avatar for Eric Kripke himself (Source) and is used to comment on the text and process of writing with reference to specific past episodes of the show. This metaphor would also hold then is God, the creator, was also the writer. We have a trinity here -- Chuck Shurley, Eric Kripke and God.

Sam and Dean find out from the angel Joshua that God is on Earth.

In 5.01 Sympathy for the Devil, Chuck says that he can feel the angels' presence in his house, which is not a power of the prophet and may be due to his being God.

In the finale there is further foreshadowing of Chuck's possible identity: When Dean calls Chuck, Chuck answers the phone "Mistress Magda," and we briefly see a newspaper ad for a blonde women in a bikini named "Miss Magda" on Chuck's desk before he puts his glass on it. This may be a reference to Mary Magdalene who Jesus, the physical incarnation of God, healed of demons. She then become a follower of his, and an early Christian leader. Chuck, after narrating the events that take place, finally appears dressed in white musing on the difficulty of getting endings right. He then disappears - Chuck, it seems, is God.

Fans arguing against Chuck's divinity point primarily to the fact that Dean's amulet, which Castiel says will "burn hot" in God's presence does not react when Dean and Chuck meet face to face in 4.18 The Monster at the End of This Book, 4.22 Lucifer Rising, and 5.01 Sympathy for the Devil. However, Joshua tells Sam and Dean in Heaven "Magic amulet or not, you won't be able to find Him."

Other arguments included the failure of others to recognize God's true self, including Raphael, the archangel assigned to protect Chuck. In 5.03 Free to Be You and Me, he tells Dean and Castiel that God is "dead" and they are living in a "godless universe." Castiel is also ignorant of Chuck's true identity. He held off Raphael at Chuck's house while Dean went after Sam in 4.22 Lucifer Rising, and met Chuck several times. Another argument that supports Chuck being God is, the angels (Castiel and others) have said that there can only be one prophet at a single time. The only time one person can no longer be a prophet is if they die. If Kevin becomes a prophet, then Chuck must be dead. Although in "Fan Fiction", he pops up and is alive. Now how can a prophet be alive if there was a prophet (Kevin) after him. The only explanation is that Chuck is in fact God.

In episode 10.05 Fan Fiction Chuck appears at the end of the episode, once again raising the question whether or not he is God.

In 11.20 Don't Call Me Shurley, Chuck returns and reveals to Metatron that He actually is God.

God in Lore

God is the English name used to refer to the monotheistic definition of the deity in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (where it is referred to as Allah). The deity varies greatly in nature between cultures, religions, and sects from benign to wrathful. They are held to be the creator of all things including humans, and to be all-powerful.
