History

Origin

God created the Archangels namely: Michael, followed by Lucifer, Raphael and Gabriel. After all of the Archangels were created they formed a strong and a very meaningful bound with one another. But after the creation and start of mankind, Lucifer began to argue constantly with his brothers and with God. At first, these arguments annoyed Gabriel but he eventually became upset and was angered by these arguments which directly resulted in his voluntary exile.

God then commanded his Angels to bow before Man, but Lucifer refused and was cast out of Heaven. As an act of defiance, Lucifer twisted a human being's soul to create the first demon, Lilith. He was then confined against his will to a Cage by Michael. The Cage could only open if the 66 attachments on the Cage broke.

In 1972, Azazel possessed a priest at St. Mary's Convent, and killed eight nuns in the chapel. This enabled him to speak to the imprisoned Lucifer. Lucifer tells Azazel that Lilith is needed to break The 66 Seals that hold him captive in the Cage and that he needs to find a very special child.[1]

Lucifer is freed when The 66 Seals that were attached to the mouth of the Lucifer's Cage all break - the final seal being broken inadvertently broken by Sam when he kills Lilith.[2] While on Earth, Lucifer with the help of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, causes chaos and natural disasters and plots to cause the destruction of humanity and to kill Michael. Essential to Lucifer's plan is the possession of his destined vessel - Sam Winchester.

Sam and Dean try to kill Lucifer with the Colt, but fail.[3] Sam comes up with a plan in which he will allow Lucifer to posses him, and then force him into the Cage. The initial attempt fails, but when Lucifer confronts Michael at Stull Cemetery, Dean activates the rings and as the cage opens, Sam manages to gain enough control to force himself (and Lucifer) into the Cage. Michael (in possession of Adam) tries to stop him but is himself also captured.

Raphael is working to open the Cage, so that Michael can finally kill Lucifer.[4]

Why would I want to destroy this stunning thing? Beautiful in a trillion different ways. The last perfect handiwork of God. Ever hear the story of how I fell from grace? [...] You know why God cast me down? Because I loved him more than anything. And then God created... you. The little hairless apes. And then he asked all of us to bow down before you: to love you more than him. And I said; "Father, I can't." I said, "These human beings are flawed. Murderous." And for that, God had Michael cast me into Hell. Now tell me: does the punishment fit the crime? Especially when I was right. Look what six billion of you have done to this thing. And how many of you blamed me for it?

– Lucifer, 5.04 The End

Season 3

Lucifer is first mentioned by the demon Casey.[5] Casey claims that demons have a belief system just like humans, but while humans believe in God as a higher power, demons view Lucifer in the same regard. Casey tells Dean Winchester that Lucifer was once an angel, and that his name means "light-bringer." Casey also states that no demon has ever actually seen Lucifer.

Season 4

Although for different reasons, both demons and executive members of The Host of Heaven are trying to break The 66 Seals so that Lucifer can be released. Castiel informs Dean that once the last attachment shatters and breaks Lucifer will finally be released and Hell will follow Lucifer as he roams the Earth spreading chaos.

Millennia later, the demon Azazel managed to locate Lucifer's prison and to communicate with him. Lucifer gave Azazel a plan to release Lucifer that required decades of work by Azazel, Meg, Ruby, and even Lilith. Of special importance was the effort to ensure Sam Winchester's availability as Lucifer's Vessel. The plan culminated in the breaking of The 66 Seals.

Ruby tells Sam Winchester that, in an act of defiance, Lucifer created the first demon by corrupting a human soul: Lilith. God then imprisoned Lucifer with six-hundred seals, sixty six of which have to be broken for Lucifer to escape his confinement, the doorway of which is located somewhere under St. Mary's Convent, in Ilchester, Maryland.[6]

In 1972, Azazel made contact with Lucifer by sacrificing a dozen nuns at the convent and was then instructed to find a 'special child' who would help break the 66 seals and free him. The first seal is prophesied to break when a righteous man spills blood in Hell; this happens when Dean breaks under Alistair's torture and inflicted pain on other damned souls in Hell.

Uriel described Lucifer as a very powerful Archangel who hated humanity and defended the angels by not bowing to it. Uriel wanted Lucifer to rise to power again and tried to recruit other angels to his cause, killing those who refuse. Castiel refused him, but Anna Milton killed Uriel before he could kill Castiel.

Zachariah tells Dean that he has a role in stopping the Apocalypse. While it initially appeared the Angels were working to stop Lucifer's release, Zachariah reveals that their true plan was to allow Lucifer to be released so that the Archangel Michael could kill Lucifer after the Apocalypse had begun. Lore tells that the final seal keeping Lucifer bound will be broken with the death of Lucifer's first: Lilith. This has been known both by the Angels and by Lilith and Ruby, who has been helping to manipulate Sam to get him to kill her. Not knowing the consequences, Sam uses his demonic powers to kill Lilith and breaks the final seal, freeing Lucifer from his incarceration.[1]

Lucifer' spirit ascends to Earth.

Lucifer is released from his Cage and immediately seeks out a suitable vessel to inhabit. He eventually hones in on a widower named Nick, whose wife and child were both butchered while they were sleeping. Lucifer's presence creates illusions and causes Nick to hallucinate, first of which causes Nick to experience an illusion consisting of him seeing blood under his sheets and then his dead wife appeared beside him on the opposite side of the bed. Nick falls asleep and he meets Lucifer who has chosen to appear as his dead wife, Sarah. They converse, and Nick assents to possession, and Lucifer's essence engulfs the house in white light and he enters Nick's body.

5.03 Free To Be You And Me

Sam is trying desperately to fall asleep, he rolls over and sees his long deceased girlfriend, Jessica, lying right beside him. They converse, discussing her death and Sam's fate. She then unexpectedly vanishes from sight. She reappears at the climax of this episode, and shortly after talking with each other, her voice and form changes and Sam turns around, and sitting right beside him is archangel Lucifer. Lucifer reveals and indirectly implies that the runes inscribed in Sam ribs are effective, stating that he had a hard time pin-pointing Sam's location. Lucifer explains that Sam was present during his rising for a reason and that Sam is his true Vessel, and Nick is only acting as an (Plan B) alternative Vessel for the time being. He then vanishes.

5.04 The End

Zachariah talks with certain Christian groups and he learns Dean's exact position, and he sends Dean five years into the future so that Dean can perceive the repercussions which will follow if he continues to deny angelic-possession. While experiencing time travel in the year of 2014, Future!Dean tells Dean that Sam was killed five years ago while in Detriot. However, he later reveals that Sam in truth did not die in Detriot but he instead gave Lucifer permission to possess him. Future!Dean and a battalion of other hunters, including, Future!Chuck, Future!Castiel and some other woman lieutenant, travel to Detriot to confront the Devil (Lucifer). Future!Dean uses the Colt on Lucifer but he remained un-phased and he snapped Future!Dean's neck. Lucifer then converses with Dean of 2009 and they talk, and Lucifer reveals that Sam will always consent to him in Detriot, and he tells Dean that no matter what they alter or what certain events they manipulate, Sam will eventually give his consent to him in Detriot. Zachariah then retrieves Dean and he returns to his current year.

5.10 Abandon All Hope

Lucifer is in Carthage, Missouri on a mission to summon Death, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. He manages to trap Castiel inside a ring of holy oil and begins conducting the ritual to free Death. The Winchesters locate him, and while Sam distracts him, Dean shoots him in the head with the Colt. However, Lucifer recovers and completes his ritual.

5.19 Hammer Of The Gods

Lucifer arrives at the hotel where Gods are gathered after getting a call from Mercury, his vessel further degraded, and slaughters the gods. He is about to kill Kali when Gabriel intervenes. He tells Lucifer that he has no legitimate grievance, he is merely jealous that humanity replaced him in God's affections. Gabriel says he is not on Lucifer's side, or Michael's but that he has come to agree with God, that humanity is better than them. Gabriel then tries to stab Lucifer from behind, using an illusion to keep him distracted, but Lucifer sees through the charade and impales his brother with the Angel Killing Sword. Lucifer is shown to grieve for his brother's death, albeit only a little.

After their escape, Sam and Dean play a porn DVD Gabriel gave Dean. In it Gabriel tells them they may be able to re-imprison Lucifer, and that the keys capable of opening and then re-imprisoning him in Lucifer's Cage which was opened when The 66 Seals were broken are the rings of Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Sam and Dean track Lucifer to Detroit, Michigan, with the intention of tricking the Devil back into his cage. Lucifer waits for them in a rustic building with his Demon bodyguards and has two of them escort Dean and Sam (who has drunk a large amount of Demon Blood in order to contain Lucifer) to him. Sam finally says "yes" to Lucifer after using his powers to effortlessly kill the Demons and the Archangel quickly abandons his vessel to become one with Sam. For a moment, the two are incapacitated, giving Dean time to open the portal to Lucifer's Cage using the Horsemen's Rings. Seemingly still in control, Sam almost throws himself into the portal but Lucifer reveals that he is only messing with Dean and closes the gate. He then takes the Horsemen's Rings and teleports to another location.

Lucifer: I've been waiting for you a long time [...] I'm not the bad guy here [...] I'm your real family [...] Who are you really angry with? Me? Or that face you see in the mirror?
Sam: I'm gonna rip you apart from the inside out!
Lucifer: Such anger, young Skywalker

Lucifer decides to let Sam speak, and tries to convince him that he is Sam's real family and that he should embrace their union. Lucifer then offers an olive branch by killing the demon-occupied people from Sam's past who collectively manipulated his entire life. The next day, Lucifer travels to Stull Cemetery: the place of his final confrontation with Michael. He tries to reason with Michael by questioning God's purpose and blaming him for making him into Satan, but Michael refuses to back down and is determined to be a "good son" to their Father. Before they can battle, however; Dean arrives in the Impala and demands to speak with Lucifer, who testily refuses. Michael orders Dean to leave but is unexpectedly banished when Castiel throws a molotov cocktail of Holy Oil over him.

Outraged that Castiel would strike his brother, Lucifer clicks his fingers and obliterates Castiel He then attacks Dean. Bobby shoots Lucifer several times, causing him to telekinetically snap Bobby's neck. The Archangel continues to hit Dean, promising to break every one of his bones before killing him. As he raises his fist to strike, Lucifer catches sight of an old army toy stuck in the backseat ashtray of the Impala, which Sam put there in his childhood. Suddenly, Lucifer is overwhelmed by happy memories of Sam's life leading up to now, and his love for Dean allows Sam to momentarily take control of the Devil. Sam re-opens the portal and is about to throw himself in it when Michael arrives.

He argues that he must fight Lucifer, that it is his destiny to do so, but Sam closes his eyes and falls backwards into the portal. Michael grabs hold of him to stop him from falling, but is ultimately pulled in with his brother and the two plummet into the abyss together. The portal closes behind them, leaving the red hot rings behind. Lucifer's fate is unknown, but Sam is seen watching Dean from afar many weeks later, confirmed in Season 6 though unaware of how he got out of Lucifer's Cage.

Season 6

6.06 You Can't Handle The Truth

Mentioned only.

After acknowledging and witnessing Sam's different personality since his resurrection and release from the Cage, Dean speculates that Sam may still in fact be hosting Lucifer. Dean calls Castiel and explains that Gabriel's Horn of Truth may be invoking and people in a small town to utter terrible truths. Castiel then searches the entire town instantly, reappearing claiming that the Horn isn't the reason for the violent truths being spoken. Dean tells Castiel that he thinks that Sam may still be hosting Lucifer. Castiel quickly denies this claim, stating that if Lucifer escaped ths Cage, the humans on Earth would've felt his presence as they did in.[2]

6.10 Caged Heat

Mentioned only.

Castiel tries to dissuade Dean that from pursuing the restoration of Sam's soul as he sincerely believes that both Lucifer and Michael have spent the past year taking out their frustrations upon it. Crowley offers a similar opinion, stating that he would rather swallow a filthy shower rag than have Sam's soul forced into him after what the archangels have no doubt done to it. He tells them that Sam's soul is also Lucifer's only source of amusement and that he is not powerful (or crazy) enough to try to pry it away from him.

6.11 Appointment in Samarra

Mentioned only.

Both Balthazar and Death speculate on the torment Sam's soul is suffering from Lucifer and Michael, Death taking particular interest in the long-term damage it will cause. At the end of the episode, Death enters Lucifer's Cage and plucks Sam's soul out of Lucifer and Michael's hands, so to speak.

Powers and Abilities

  • When Lucifer teleports thunder can be heard and when he reappears a flash of lightning can be seen; he can teleport himself and groups of people to any location on Earth.[7]
  • Lucifer can easily over-power Pagan Gods.[8]
  • Shortly after Lucifer's release, his angelic spirit created massive tsunamis, tornados. Also, soon after his release, a new virus called H1N1 which is often referred to as Swine flu begins to spread.[2]
  • By simply snapping his fingers he can cause a lesser angel to blow up from the inside out.[9]
  • Lucifer can perceive the true forms of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as he demonstrated when he saw Death's true form.[3]
  • Lucifer is unaffected by the Colt (a gun that can kill anything). According to him, there are four other beings that cannot be killed with the Colt.[3]
  • Lucifer's angelic spirit can be very overwhelming to humans; only a person who has consumed a high dosage of demon blood can successfully contain him; one such person is Sam Winchester.[10]
  • Contrary to populary belief, Lucifer does not burn hot. He can freeze objects with his breath; he froze a window just by breathing on it.[9]
  • After his angelic spirit left his Cage, he emitts a frequency disruption that sent Dean and Sam to their knees.[2]
  • Lucifer is unaffected by time.[7]
  • Lucifer has used a spell, most likely not of his own, that makes him Death's master. Because of this control, he can make Death do his dirty work.[10]

Vulnerabilities

The Colt can damage and harm Lucifer, but it cannot kill him. Holy Fire can bind Lucifer to a fixed location; if he were to step out of the circle, his Vessel would be destroyed. An Archangel Killing Blade can kill Lucifer. Other Archangels can harm Lucifer.

Personality

Lucifer was once God's most perfect creation and the most beautiful angel in all of existence. God loved him best of all his brothers, even more than Michael [Gabriel-Hammer of the Gods]. This treatment created a great deal of pride within Lucifer, and it is because of his pride that Lucifer was unable to tolerate losing God's favortism to a race of "little hairless apes". Subsequently, when God commanded all of Heaven to love his new children more than himself, Lucifer refused. Gabriel likens this to "Dad brought the new baby home and you couldn't handle it". By his own admission, Lucifer pleaded: "Father, I can't. These humans are flawed. Murderous!" After persistant disobedience, Lucifer was eventually cast out of Heaven by God when Michael refused to heed his brother's plight.

This only enraged Lucifer, however, and he struck back by taking a human woman (Lilith) and stripping her of her humanity, creating the first demon. Having committed an unforgivable affront to the Lord, God ordered Michael to imprison Lucifer in Hell. A brief confrontation between the brothers saw Michael victorious and God imprisoned Lucifer sealed behind 666 seals, of which only 66 needed to break in order for him to walk free from Hell. Lucifer was trapped in the deepest pit of Hell, separate from his demon devotees. During the countless years of his imprisonment, Lucifer did not see the error of his ways, if anything his hated only festered and continued to believe that humanity was a "flawed abortion". His one goal was to be free from his cage and erradicate humanity, allowing him to restore Earth to its original untainted glory.

Lucifer claims he never lies, even when speaking to his adversaries, though he often avoids topics that might weaken his position. Gabriel was able to bluntly cut right to the heart of Lucifer's angst, accurately describing it as "one big temper tantrum". Death makes a similar observation. Lucifer, however, sees himself as a tragic figure who was punished for being right. He refuses to accept any blame for his actions, however brings up an interesting philosophical suggestion, which may be correcct, suggesting that God intentionally made Lucifer a devil. He arrogantly believes that he is right and that everyone, including God, is wrong. For this reason Michael is exasperated when he realises that Lucifer has not changed one bit since their last meeting. Lucifer maintains a degree of concern for his fellow angels' lives; his three brothers especially. Though he never expresses any opinion on Raphael, he does show remorse when forced to kill Gabriel and disappointment when berated by Michael. He also takes great offense to anyone other than him "dicking" with Michael and obliterates Castiel for just that reason. When preparing to fight his older sibling in their pre-destined battle, Lucifer pleaded with Michael to "walk off the chessboard" and though he (Michael) thought about it, something changed his mind and he followed his original orders, blindly believing that simply because God ordered him to fight and kill Lucifer, regardless of the enormous collateral damage, he was doing the right thing.

The one person to whom Lucifer has shown the most concern is Sam Winchester; his true vessel. When finally in possession of his body, Lucifer takes the time to speak with Sam and tries to convince him that they are meant to be together: "Two halves made whole. MFEO. Literally." He even allows Dean to live on multiple occasions for Sam's sake, though he disregards this after Dean interrupts his battle with Michael and finally reveals his frustration towards him by viciously beating Dean almost to death. When Sam's happy memoriesof life with Dean allowed overpowered Lucifer, but it could be surmised that beneath all his hatred and anger, Lucifer still has a similarly poignant history with his own family that may have been brought to the surface in that moment.

Notes

  • In Supernatural, he has been called and referred to as: the Adversary, the Serpent, Satan and the Devil. In relation with the constant occurences to which the show has given and presented many titles concerning Lucifer: Lucifer tells Nick that people refer to him as "Satan" and the "Devil"; this was also mentioned in 5.04 The End. According to Lucifer, the name "The Devil" was a man-given title; humans gave him this title/name for his bad reputation. Lucifer tells Nick that the title doesn't fit and that he was cast down for loving God too much.

Trivia

Lucifer in Lore

  • According to A Dictionary of Angels, Lucifer is erroneously equated with The Devil (the fallen angel) due to a misreading of Isaiah 14:12: "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning," (Lucifer connotes star, and applies to the morning star (that is, Venus) instead of an angel) an apostrophe which applied to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. It should be pointed out that the authors of the books of the Old Testament knew nothing of fallen or evil angels, and do not mention them, although, at times, as in Job 4:18. The name "Lucifer" was applied to The Devil by St. Jerome and other Church Fathers. Milton in Paradise Lost applied the name to the demon of sinful pride. Dutch writer Vondel uses Lucifer in lieu of the Devil.
  • There is an angel called Samael in Judaic mythology (also known as "Sammael" and "Samil"), which means "poison of God" in Hebrew
  • In Talmudic and post-Talmudic lore, Samael is an important archangel. He is considered in legend both a member of the heavenly host (with often grim and destructive duties), a fallen angel (equal to Satan) and the chief of the evil spirits. One of Samael's greatest roles in Jewish lore is that of the Angel of Death; in this capacity, he is a fallen angel but nevertheless remains one of the Lord's servants. As a good angel, Samael supposedly resides in the seventh heaven, although he is declared to be the chief angel of the fifth heaven.
  • In some traditions, Lucifer and Michael are considered twins. This is possibly due to the fact that Lucifer's story may derived from Shahar the god of dawn in the Ugarit myth, who has a twin brother Shalim the god of dusk.
