In Lawrence, Mary bumps into a young soldier who reappears later that night while she is heading to an address to which apparently has a file her father, who is know missing was to to retrieve by someone called Ada Monroe. Mary finds John being attacked by a demon and she dispatches and exorcises it. John has a key that opens the magically warded door, which leads to a clubhouse for a group called the Men of Letters. Mary finds the schematic that her father, was after. John finds items belong to his father.

The next day John discovers that Ada Monroe has gone missing, and so he and Mary head to Texas to investigate. At the scene they are confronted by a demon, but are saved by the arrival of Mary's friends Carlos and Latika. They find information that the schematic Mary found is a guide to opening a box that traps monsters. They also find coordinates to where the box may be.

In New Orleans, the coordinates lead Mary and the gang to a crypt. Mary and John locate the box but are attacked by a loup-garou. As John fights it off Mary returns topside, to find a demon possessed Ada attacking Carlos and Lata. Mary gives the box to Lata. She uses the sequence she has deducted fromt he schematic to open it, whereupon it sucks the demon inside.

Back in Lawrence, Ada relates that Samuel Campbell was alooking for a way to defeat a supernatural being called the Akrida, and that there may be information in Savannah. Mary heads to leave on her own, but John insists they go together as a team.
