The Angels' plan was that Lucifer should be allowed to be freed and then Michael would use Dean as his Vessel and kill Lucifer (who's Vessel is Sam) once and for all.

Gabriel draws a clear parallel between Sam and Dean's destiny ("we knew it was all gonna end with you. Always.") and Lucifer and Micheal's relationship 5.09 Changing Channels

Michael, the big brother, loyal to an absent father, and Lucifer, the little brother, rebellious of Daddy's plan. You were born to this, boys. It's your destiny! It was always you! As it is in heaven, so it must be on earth. One brother has to kill the other.

In 5.10 Abandon All Hope Lucifer tells Sam that he had a brother who he loved and idolised called Michael. Lucifer asked Michael for help (against God's creation of humans) and that Michael turned on him, called him a freak because Lucifer was "different, because i had a mind of my own" and then beat Lucifer down.

Michael was first mentioned in 2.13 Houses of the Holy, when Sam notices a painting of Michael killing Lucifer by the Renaissance painter Raphael in the church.

Father Reynolds: That's right. The archangel Michael, with the flaming sword. The fighter of demons, holy force against evil.
Sam: So they're not really the Hallmark card version that everybody thinks? They're fierce, right? Vigilant?

Father Reynolds: Well, I like to think of them as more loving than wrathful; but yes, a lot of Scripture paints angels as God's warriors. "An angel of the Lord appeared to them, the glory of the Lord shone down upon them, and they were terrified." Luke. Two nine.

Michael in lore
