History

Origin

Soon after God established and constructed the foundation of Heaven itself, he created an Archangel named Michael. Following soon after Michael's creation, three other Archangels named Lucifer, Gabriel and Raphael came into being, and from then on they represented and served as Michael's younger siblings. Following the creation of the four archangels, a strong and healthy relationship was formed between Michael and Lucifer. After the creation of Heaven, Archangels, Angels and Cupids, God articulated and designed Earth to which he gave life by creating humans. Soon after the fundamentals of humanity were presented and established, God commanded his all of his Angels to bow before Man. Lucifer questioned this command, then Lucifer retreated to Michael for support but Michael wouldn't listen. Then God told Michael to exile Lucifer, and Michael reluctantly obeyed which formed a forever wedge between them. Lucifer was thrown into a Cage in which 600 Seals where attached to the mouth of the prison. Only 66 of the 600 had to break for him to be released.

Some time after Lucifer's banishment and God's departure, Michael organized and devised a 'plan' in which its sole purpose was to allow the 66 Seals to break. The sole caretakers of this plan appeared to have been Michael, Zachariah and Raphael. This angelic plan involved demons and angels. The Demons wanted them to break so that they could meet their maker, and Michael and the executive members of the Host wanted them to break so that Lucifer could walk free which would allow Michael to destroy him using Dean Winchester as his Vessel. We later learn that not all Angels possessed knowledge of this angelic plan, and Castiel, a normal angel, found out the true intention of the plan and told Dean in which he was later found and destroyed by Raphael the Archangel.

Season 4

Michael's name was never presented or mentioned in this Season. But in 4.22 Lucifer Rising, while Zachariah is informing Dean of his true purpose we see an illustration of Michael in a painting.

Season 5

Zachariah reveals that the Angels' plan is for Michael to use Dean Winchester as his Vessel and kill Lucifer once and for all. However, Dean needs to give his consent to be the Vessel.

Michael first appears when Sam, Dean and Castiel have travelled back to 1978 to stop Anna from killing John and Mary in order to prevent Sam’s birth, and thus his use as Lucifer’s Vessel.

Michael takes John Winchester as his Vessel temporarily John consents when Michael says he can stop Anna from killing Mary.
Michael kills Anna and sends Uriel back to Heaven. He then explains to Dean that:

“Lucifer defied our Father and he betrayed me, but I don’t want this anymore than you would want to kill Sam. My brother, I raised him and looked after him in ways most people couldn’t understand, but I still love him. But I am going to kill him because it is right, and because I have to…”

Michael tells Dean that everything is pre-ordained, that “Free Will is an illusion Dean, that’s why you are going to say yes.”
He then heals Sam, and returns him and Dean to the present day. He removes all memories of the events of the day from Mary and John.

Michael burns in Holy Oil (temporarily being banished to Heaven)

Seeing no other way to defeat Lucifer and save the planet, Dean finally consents to becoming Michael's vessel when Zachariah tortures Sam and their half-brother Adam Milligan (who was resurrected as leverage for Dean). Zachariah utters an incantation that summons Michael to their location only for Dean to kill Zachariah with an Angel Knife. Sam and Dean manage to escape before Michael descends, but Adam is trapped inside the room and vanishes, presumably by Michael's hand. Adam is technically a vessel, if only a temporary one, for Michael, being of the Winchester bloodline. It is unknown if the Archangel captured Adam for this purpose.

Castiel tells Dean, Sam and Bobby that Michael is currently using Adam as his Vessel. After Lucifer joins with his true vessel, Sam, Michael appears in the Stull Cemetery outside of Lawrence, Kansas, to confront Lucifer for the final battle. Lucifer tries to convince Michael that they need not fight, but Michael is adamant that he be a "good son" to their Father, and is determined that they fight. Before they can do so, however; Dean arrives and demands to speak to Sam. Michael protests his presence, telling him he has no place on the field. But before he can do anything about it, Castiel hurls a Holy Oil molotov at the Archangel, forcing him to vanish for several minutes. When he returns, Sam has managed to regain control of his body and opened the gate to Lucifer's Cage. Michael demands a fight but Sam throws himself into the portal. Michael grabs hold of Sam to stop him from falling but is dragged down into the pit along with him, the portal closing behind them.

Zachariah talks to Dean about his destiny

In 2.13 Houses of the Holy, Sam notices a painting of Michael by killing Lucifer by the renaissance painter Raphael in the Church they visit.

Father Reynolds: That's right. The archangel Michael, with the flaming sword. The fighter of demons, holy force against evil.
Sam: So they're not really the Hallmark card version that everybody thinks? They're fierce, right? Vigilant?
Father Reynolds: Well, I like to think of them as more loving than wrathful; but yes, a lot of Scripture paints angels as God's warriors. "An angel of the Lord appeared to them, the glory of the Lord shone down upon them, and they were terrified." Luke. Two nine.

When Zachariah tells Dean his destiny is to kill Lucifer he stands in front of a painting of the Archangel Michael killing Lucifer. The painting is Saint Michel terrassant le Dragon by 15th century Flemish painter Josse Lieferinxe.
