Michael is one of four Archangels created by God.

History

God, after existing alongside Death, creates Heaven, and eventually makes his first celestial being naming him Michael, an archangel, followed by his three brothers, Lucifer, Raphael, and Gabriel.

After the creations on Heaven and its angels, God commanded all of the celestial beings (archangels, angels, and cupids) to bow before mankind, and to love them more than himself. All of the angels presumably obeys this command, but Lucifer questions this order, complaining that they're "flawed, murderous beings"[1] Lucifer then seeks out his older brother, Michael for support but Michael refuses to listen.

God then tells Michael to exile Lucifer, and Michael reluctantly obeyed which forever formed a wedge between them. Lucifer was thrown into a Cage in which 600 Seals where attached to the mouth of the prison. Only 66 of the 600 had to break for him to be released.

Sometime later, Michael constructed a plan which involved allowing The 66 Seals to break. Core participants included Michael, Zachariah, Raphael, among others. Michael wanted them to break so that Lucifer could be released from the Cage which would give him an opportunity to destroy him on Earth using Dean Winchester as his Vessel. It is later the lower angel "grunts" to avoid rebellion; Castiel was oblivious to this plan at first but he later found out Heaven's true intention and told Dean, but he he was soon found and destroyed by Raphael.

The 66 Seals are eventually break and Lucifer is released. Soon after Lucifer's rising, Michael instructs Zachariah to get Dean's permission to possess him. Due to Dean's constant and repetitive refusals to angelic-possession, Michael stays in Heaven for a while, but monitors the situation, and he eventually gets to speak with Dean while Dean is experiencing time travel in the year of 1978. Dean eventually assents to Michael and he kills Zachariah using an Angel Killing Sword. However, Dean and Sam escape and Michael claims Adam Milligan's body instead and he meets Lucifer on the chosen field using Adam. Eventually, Sam is able to regain control over his body and temporarily manages Lucifer inside him and throws himself and Lucifer, Adam and Michael into Lucifer's Cage.

Following Sam's resurrection from Lucifer's Cage Castiel tells Dean that he believes that , Michael and Lucifer have been torturing Sam's soul for a whole year. [2]Death eventually travels to Hell and retrieves Sam's soul and returns it to him.[3]

Appearances and References

2.13 Houses of the Holy

Sam notices a painting of Michael by killing Lucifer by the renaissance painter Raphael in the Church they visit.

Father Reynolds: That's right. The archangel Michael, with the flaming sword. The fighter of demons, holy force against evil.
Sam: So they're not really the Hallmark card version that everybody thinks? They're fierce, right? Vigilant?
Father Reynolds: Well, I like to think of them as more loving than wrathful; but yes, a lot of Scripture paints angels as God's warriors. "An angel of the Lord appeared to them, the glory of the Lord shone down upon them, and they were terrified." Luke. Two nine.

4.22 Lucifer Rising

Michael's name was never presented or mentioned in this Season. But in 4.22 Lucifer Rising, while Zachariah is informing Dean of his true purpose we see an illustration of Michael in a painting. Michael orchestrates the breaking of the 66 Seals while in Heaven, deploying Zachariah to ensure that the remaining Seals break.[4]

5.01 Sympathy For The Devil

Mentioned only. Upon Lilith's death (the first demon) and Lucifer's rising from the Cage, Zachariah reveals to Dean that the upper-class angels' plan is for Michael to use Dean Winchester as his Vessel and kill Lucifer once and for all. However, Dean needs to give his consent to be the Vessel.

5.13 The Song Remains The Same

Michael first appears when Sam, Dean and Castiel have travelled back to 1978 to stop Anna from killing John and Mary in order to prevent Sam’s birth, and thus his use as Lucifer’s Vessel. Michael takes John Winchester as his Vessel temporarily John consents when Michael says he can stop Anna from killing Mary. Michael kills Anna and sends Uriel back to Heaven. He then explains to Dean that:

“Lucifer defied our Father and he betrayed me, but I don’t want this anymore than you would want to kill Sam. My brother, I raised him and looked after him in ways most people couldn’t understand, but I still love him. But I am going to kill him because it is right, and because I have to…”

Michael tells Dean that everything is pre-ordained, that “Free Will is an illusion Dean, that’s why you are going to say yes.” He then heals Sam, and returns him and Dean to the present day. He removes all memories of the events of the day from Mary and John.

5.18 Point of No Return

His presence was made known but his true form was kept hidden during the summoning. Seeing no other way to defeat Lucifer and save the planet, Dean finally consents to becoming Michael's vessel when Zachariah tortures Sam and their half-brother Adam Milligan (who was resurrected as leverage for Dean). Zachariah utters an incantation that summons Michael to their location only for Dean to kill Zachariah with an Angel Knife. Sam and Dean manage to escape before Michael descends, but Adam is trapped inside the room and vanishes, presumably by Michael's hand. Adam is technically a vessel, if only a temporary one, for Michael, being of the Winchester bloodline. It is unknown if the Archangel captured Adam for this purpose.

5.21 Two Minutes To Midnight

Mentioned only. Castiel tells Sam and Bobby that Michael is currently using Adam as his Vessel.

5.22 Swan Song

After Lucifer joins with his true vessel, Sam, Michael appears in the Stull Cemetery outside of Lawrence, Kansas, to confront Lucifer for the final battle. Lucifer tries to convince Michael that they need not fight, but Michael is adamant that he be a "good son" to their Father, and is determined that they fight. Before they can do so, however; Dean arrives and demands to speak to Sam. Michael protests his presence, telling him he has no place on the field. But before he can do anything about it, Castiel hurls a Holy Oil molotov at the Archangel, forcing him to vanish for several minutes. When he returns, Sam has managed to regain control of his body and opened the gate to Lucifer's Cage. Michael demands a fight but Sam throws himself into the portal. Michael grabs hold of Sam to stop him from falling but is dragged down into the pit along with him, the portal closing behind them.

6.10 Caged Heat

Mentioned only. Castiel speculates that Michael and Lucifer are currently tormenting and torturing Sam's soul to such a degree that Castiel thinks the the restoration of Sam's soul would more than likely devastate Sam mentally and physical.[5]

Characteristics

Michael burns in Holy Oil (temporarily being banished to Heaven)

Powers and Abilities

Michael can:

  • Incinerate any angel just by touching them.[6]
  • Revive the deceased and heal body wounds.[6]
  • Cause blindness and deafness with his true traits and form.[7]
  • Send and banish angels back to heaven just by snapping his fingers.[6]
  • Teleport himself and groups of people to any location on Earth. Michael proved capable of teleportation while in his true form.[7]
  • Bend time; he was able to send both Dean and Sam back to the present time period.[6]
  • Wipe out or erase specific memories from a person's mind, as he demonstrated when he erased John and Mary's memories concerning their encounter with Dean and Sam.[6]
  • Seemingly resist the full effects of Holy Fire because he vessel wasn't destroyed after coming in contact with Holy Fire, as he was only sent back to Heaven temporarily.
  • Make any vessel he uses remain un-damaged after possessing them, as he shares this with Dean; he tells Dean that he won't leave Dean a "drooling mess" after he kills Lucifer and leaves his body.

Weaknesses

  • The Colt may distract Michael, but it cannot harm or kill him.
  • Holy Fire can bind Michael to a fixed location; if he were to step out of the circle, he would temporarily be banished to Heaven (as demonstrated by the Holy Fire molotov in the Season 5 finale).
  • An Archangel Killing Blade can kill Michael.
  • Other Archangels may be able to harm Michael.

Vessels

  • John Winchester: On the verge of death, a young John Winchester assents to become Michael's vessel after Michael promised him that he would save Mary during possession. He uses this vessel to speak to Dean.
  • Adam Milligan: Michael is forced to claim Adam Milligan's body after Dean escapes with Sam.
