Destiel fans pointed out parallels between Dean and Castiel's arc in Purgatory to that of the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice in Greek mythology.

From a meta essay that also looked at the Purgatory spell in 15.08 Our Father, Who Aren't in Heaven, drsilverfish observed,

"Orpheus (Dean) could not bring Eurydice (Cas) with him, not because, like Orpheus, he doubted and looked behind him (thus trapping Eurydice in Hades) but because Cas did not think he deserved happiness topside with Dean, because of his sins as Godstiel, and so he tragically let go of Dean’s hand deliberately at the last moment."

Fans noted, however, that this left out an important figure in Benny. So donnasweettttttttt coined the delightfully descriptive term "Orpheus’s gay Cajun vampire sidepiece" to refer to Benny.
