Real Person Fiction

Real Person Fiction (RPF) is fanfiction written about real people, in most cases celebrities such as actors, musicians, or athletes. RPF is an umbrella term for all fanfiction concerning real people, but its main sub-category is RPS, or Real Person Slash.

Some RPF featuring Jared and Jensen (not in a relationship) exists, although it is quite rare. It is sometimes referred to as pre-slash to allow its posting in RPS communities.

Het RPF generally focuses on Jared/Sandy aka Sandywhack, Jensen/Danneel or Jared/Genevieve. Following the release of the Season 1 DVD, the hair and make-up artists from Supernatural Jeannie and Shannon also featured in a few stories.

RPS in Supernatural Fandom

The first RPS cropping up on the lj-community [sn_newsletter] on November 2nd, was ethrosdemon's “Michael Rosenbaum Uses Viagra, and Other Lies Jensen Ackles Tells For Fun” (Tom Welling/Jensen Ackles), although strictly speaking it was a Smallville RPS fic. November 10th brought the first mentioned Jensen/Jared RPS by stone_princess: “postbarfightalleysnoggingfic” – her RPS is by now locked down - as well as storydivagirl’s “Enduring the Quiet”.

November and December 2005 saw a few tentative fics, but RPS really kicked off in January 2006, fueled by public appearances of Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki in which they appeared quite close.

They have both said in interviews before that they are googling themselves so it's possible they've stumbled over RPS written about them. In any case, whether they are playing into the fangirls' and fanboys' hands willingly or by accident, their humorous and loose-tongued remarks are a constant source of delight to the RPSer:

Interviewer:The most famous celebrity you have made out with...

Jared: That has to be Jensen [laughs]

Jensen: You wish

After the airing of Devil's Trap (Episode 122) on May, 4th, a lot of Jensen/Jeffrey Dean Morgan fics started to appear as well as some (Jensen/Jared/Jeff)fics.

The announcement that as of July 2008, and the beginning of Season Four, Jensen had moved in to share Jared's house in Vancouver lead to the frantic shining of fandom's Tin hats.

The casting of Misha Collins as Castiel led to his appearance in fanfic paired with ether Jared, Jensen or both. This particularly increased after his playful interactions with them at All Hell Breaks Loose Sydney 2009.

Because the main pairing in the fandom, Sam/Dean, is incestuous, slash writers uncomfortable with this have turned to writing RPS, even if it is a genre they would have shunned in other fandoms. See also Drugs of Fandom.

The CW RPS

RPS featuring actors on The WB, the network Supernatural started on, was in existence before Supernatural as it was home network Buffy, Angel, Smallville and One Tree Hill.

One of the one of the most popular RPS pairings that isn't Jsquared is Jensen Ackles/Christian Kane (Jensen's friend and fellow actor/musician). Christian starred as Lindsay MacDonald in Angel and appeared in The Plight of Clownana with Jensen. He was previously popularly paired with David Boreanz. Jensen/Chris slash has been around at least since February 2006.

Another popular pairing is Jared Padalecki/Chad Michael Murray (Chad Michael Murray from the WB/CW show "One Tree Hill". He has formerly been on "Gilmore Girls" with Jared and they met again on the set of the horror-movie "House of Wax". Reportedly, they shared an apartment in Australia while filming. Chad Michael Murray is often referred to as Mayhem because of his many, many antics (e.g. getting excluded from his girlfriend's high school prom).

Just as Chad Michael Murray is an actor from the WB/CW crowd, so are Smallville's Michael Rosenbaum and Tom Welling, who are commonly paired. Jensen and Jared are quite often slashed with either of them, especially as the four of them allegedly hang out together quite a lot. Sometimes, RPS involving Chad, Michael and/or Tom is referred to as WB/CW RPS or CW RPS.

Alternate Universes

The AU is a very popular sub-genre in RPS. Popular AUs feature Jared and Jensen when they were at high school or college, in vocations other than acting, as hookers, in historical settings and in post-apocalyptic setting.

Another popular AU is to slash either actor with their on-screen characters and their 'verse; generally Supernatural (eg Jensen/Sam) but sometimes from past shows such as Jared/Alec (Jensen's character in Dark Angel)
