Around the time of the Black Plague in Europe in 1350, Ruby is was a human who sells sold her [[soul]] to the [[demon]] who would later [[Possession|possess]] [[Tammi Benton]]. In exchange, the demon teaches taught her [[witch]]craft. Upon death Ruby goes to was sent [[Hell]] and eventually becomes became a demon herself after centuries of torture.,<ref name="three09" /> She also adopts and adopted the demon faith and becomes became a worshipper worshiper of [[Lucifer]].<ref name="four22" />

Ruby is was meant to serve as a member of the army of demons [[Azazel]] has had released from the [[Devil's Gate in Wyoming]].<ref name="two22">[[2.22 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part Two]]</ref> However, when Azazel is was killed by [[Dean Winchester]],<ref name="two22" /> she is was tasked with a secret undercover operation by [[Lilith]] (the new leader of the demon army) instead, one that pits would pit her against her fellow soldiers: when 65 of [[the 66 Seals]] have had been broken, Ruby has was to get [[Sam Winchester]] to kill Lilith in order to break the last seal and free Lucifer.<ref name="four22" />

Ruby secures [[Ruby's Demon-Killing Knife|an ancient demon-killing knife of the Kurds]]<ref name="eight12">[[8.12 As Time Goes By]]</ref> with which to defend herself and her charge from other demons, and begins following Sam and killing demons who try to kill him to neutralize him as a competitor for leadership of the army.<ref name="three09" /><ref name="three01">[[3.01 The Magnificent Seven]]</ref><ref name="three09" /> She initially presents herself as a fellow [[hunter]], but soon discloses her true identity as a demon to Sam when he presses her for the truth. She gets him to stay his hand when she tells him that she can help him save Dean from the [[deal]] he made with a [[crossroads demon]].<ref name="three02">[[3.02 The Kids Are Alright]]</ref> Ruby insists that she is helping them and fighting on the side of humans against her own kind because she remembers how being human felt.<ref name="three09" /> However, Dean largely regards her and her apparent helpfulness with suspicion.<ref name="three09" /> When she begins manipulating Sam into tapping into his latent demonic powers, Dean recognizes it as proof of her evil intentions and turns against her completely.<ref name="three16">[[3.16 No Rest for the Wicked]]</ref>

While Dean is in Hell, Ruby finds found Sam at his lowest point. She sets him down the path of going after Lilith for revenge and trains him to practice with his powers and enhance them by drinking her [[Demon blood|blood]], getting him powerful enough to [[exorcise]] (and later, kill) demons by thought. She also begins a sexual affair with him. When she comes to save Sam from a trap set by Lilith's minions even after he threatened to kill her if she interfered, she finally earns some measure of his trust.<ref name="four09">[[4.09 I Know What You Did Last Summer]]</ref> After [[Castiel]] brings Dean back from Hell, Sam keeps much of his relationship with Ruby a secret and they continue working together to kill Lilith behind Dean's back and against his wishes.<ref name="four04">[[4.04 Metamorphosis]]</ref><ref name="four14">[[4.14 Sex and Violence]]</ref> Ruby eventually gets Sam addicted to her blood, which deepens the fall-out between the brothers when Dean finds out and tries to kill Ruby to stop her from hurting and manipulating Sam, only for Sam to continue to defend her. In the ensuing fight, Sam picks Ruby over Dean.<ref name="four21">[[4.21 When the Levee Breaks]]</ref>

Once 65 of the seals have had been broken, Ruby leads Sam to [[St. Mary's Convent]] to kill Lilith and prevents Dean from telling Sam that Lilith's death is the last seal. Once Sam finally succeeds in killing Lilith, Ruby explains to him what her true mission has been all along, which proves to be her downfall when he turns against her and assists Dean in killing her with her own knife.<ref name="four22" /> Nearly 11 years after her death, the Winchesters, [[Castiel]], and [[Jack]] learn that Ruby was in possession of [[the Occultum]] at the time of her death, which they need for their plan to kill [[God]]. In order to find the Occultum, Castiel awakens Ruby in [[the Empty]], where the demon gives him the location in exchange for Castiel promising to try to help her escape from the Empty and resurrect her.<ref name="fifteen13">[[15.13 Destiny's Child]]</ref>

Ruby has had black eyes (irises and sclerae).<ref name="three02" /> Her true face is not shown, but [[Dean]] is appalled at the sight of it and describes her as "one ''ugly'' broad."<ref name="three16" /> [[Anna]] has a similar visceral reaction, even screaming and retreating at the sight of Ruby.<ref name="four09" /> In stark contrast to her hideous true form, Ruby tends tended to [[Possession|possess]] beautiful young women to use as her [[meatsuit]]s. She has had a great deal of knowledge about witchcraft and [[Spells|spell-work]], having been an extraordinarily talented [[witch]] when she was human.<ref name="three09" /> Her presence causes could cause failure in automobiles and electrical lights.<ref name="three09" />Despite this, in general she did not display a great deal of power, appearing to be a lower demon who relied more on her martial arts, witchcraft, and knife than her demonic powers. However, [[Sister Jo]] called Ruby a powerful demon, suggesting that she may have been more powerful than she demonstrated.<ref name="fifteen13" /> Ruby was apparently fond of French fries<ref name="three02"/><ref name="four09"/> (probably the ones without [[salt]]).

While the boys are under siege from [[demon]]s while in a police station, Ruby shows up, able to get in through a [[salt]] line damaged unwittingly by the deputy. She tells them that [[demon]]s are from [[Lilith]], [[Sam]]'s demonic rival from "the west," and tries to convince [[Sam]] that the solution is a spell she knows that will "vaporize" all [[demon]]s within radius - including herself. However the spell requires the sacrifice of a virgin. Nancy volunteers but Dean is vehemently against the plan, instead he convinces Sam that they need to just open the doors and fight off the hoard horde themselves. Exasperated, Ruby leaves. After the boys have escaped, seemingly victorious over the demons, Ruby turns up at their motel room and tells them to turn on the television, where they find out that everyone left in the police station was killed by [[Lilith]].

Following [[Sam]] and [[Dean]]'s fight in the preceding episode, Ruby tries to reassure Sam, but he insists that they concentrate on killing Lilith as quickly as possible. Ruby takes him to the [[demon]] [[Possession|possessing]] [[Cindy McClellan]] and helps him capture her. The demon reveals that Lilith will be at [[St. Mary's Convent]] at midnight the following day and begs for death, but Ruby stops Sam from killing the other demon, as Ruby says that they need her alive to harvest her [[Demon blood|blood]] for Sam to drink (in addition to Ruby's own blood) so that he will become powerful enough to kill Lilith. When the demon relinquishes control to her [[meatsuit]] (or at least pretends to) and makes Sam hesitant to go through with it, Ruby pressures Sam to do it anyway, but it is only when Sam listens to a hurtful voicemail left by Dean and altered by [[Zachariah]] (or possibly Ruby herself) that he agrees to it at the last minute. Ruby, toying with a knife as she waits for Sam to make his decision, smiles to herself when she hears the voicemail being played; as Sam's back is turned, he doesn't notice her smile now anymore than he did in [[4.16 On the Head of a Pin]]. With Sam's permission, Ruby bleeds Cindy dry, kills both her and the demon, and supplies Sam with all the blood she drained from Cindy.

Ruby accompanies Sam as he kills Lilith's minions and then confronts Lilith herself. When Dean arrives, Ruby smirks at him and [[Telekinesis|telekinetically]] locks him out to prevent him from interfering. When Dean starts to get through to Sam with his yells, Ruby screams at Sam to hurry up and kill Lilith, which he eventually does. At first, Ruby is stunned that Sam actually managed to kill Lilith, then grows jubilant because—as she reveals to an appalled Sam—Lilith's death was the last seal and they have just set [[Lucifer]] free. She explains that she has secretly been working for Lilith all along to free Lucifer (something only Lilith herself knew), and basks in her success after all that she has gone through in bringing this about, declaring herself the best, most loyal demon. Her exuberance fades when Sam tries to kill her for her treachery with his powers. Sam accuses her of "poisoning" him with [[demon blood]], but she tells him that the choices he has made all year have been all him; she only laid out the possibilities and he chose the "right" way each time. She tries to convince Sam that Lucifer's freedom is a good thing and they will be rewarded. She also starts to tell Sam why he was the only one who could bring this about but is interrupted when Dean finally breaks in and charges towards her. Ruby turns to confront him, taunting him that it's too late, only to get caught off-guard when Sam grabs her from behind and holds her in place as Dean stabs her with [[Ruby's Knife|her own knife]]. She chokes in pain as a vengeful Dean twists the knife and continues stabbing carves into herbody, prolonging her agony before he finally removes the knife and she dies.
