  • Seraphim have four different angelic faces (one of these faces happen to be that of a Lion). They also have six enormous wings.

A Seraph is one of a class of celestial beings mentioned once in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh or Old Testament), in Isaiah. Later Jewish imagery perceived them as having human form, and in that way they passed into the ranks of Christian angels. In the Christian angelic hierarchy, Seraphim represent the highest rank of angels. In Supernatural, however, they are depicted as being more powerful than typical Angels but still below the Archangels in the celestial hierarchy. Zachariah is one such Seraphim. He describes his true form in Heaven as possessing "...six wings and four heads, one of which is a lion". This is in keeping with the Hebrew Bible's description of the Seraph Angel:

"... I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and His train filled the Hekhal (sanctuary). Above Him stood the Seraphim; each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew."

– , Isaiah (6: 1-3)

Aside from the typical abilities inherent in all Angels, the Seraphim are shown to possess the following traits:

  • The ability to re-write a person's mind, inserting false memories and making them believe they are entirely different people.
  • Zachariah claimed to be able to resurrect the Prophet Chuck should he try to kill himself.
  • Seraphs can pass between Earth and Heaven at will, taking their vessels along with them (unlike Castiel who was forcibly removed from his vessel before being dragged back to Heaven for judgment).
  • They can inflict mortal injuries on humans in a creative fashion, such as giving Dean Stage 4 stomach cancer, or clotting Sam's lungs so he cannot breathe. Zachariah also broke Sam's leg by pointing his finger at him like a gun and flicking his thumb.
  • Zachariah also claimed to be able to take Dean to the Archangel Michael in person, suggesting that a Seraphim can also deliver live humans to Heaven without killing them.

Seraphim in Lore

The Seraphim make their first Christian appearance in the Book of Revelation iv. 6-8, where they are forever in God's presence and praising Him constantly: "Day and night they never stop saying: 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.'"

The Seraphim and the Cherubim are, in Christian theology, two separate types of angels. The descriptions of the Seraphim, Cherubim and Ophanim are often similar, but still distinguishable.
