Sleeping Arrangements
In fanfiction, it is widely accepted that Dean almost always takes the bed closest to the door because of his need to protect Sammy. This page will document what happens in the show. Once all episodes have been cataloged, a tally will be given at the bottom of the page. The episode summaries will give a brief description of the sleeping arrangements. If the boys don't have a motel room, it will be listed as "No Room Shown" (NRS.) If a room is shown but no indication is given, then it will be listed as "Unclear."

SEASON ONE
DEAN = 9. SAM = 3
1.01 Pilot (a.k.a. "Woman in White)
NRS. The boys do visit John's motel room but neither is shown sleeping there.
1.02 Wendigo
NRS. Presumably, the boys both stayed awake all night to keep a lookout for the Wendigo.
1.03 Dead in the Water
Sam. Dean is shown throwing his laundry onto the second bed. Later, they have a discussion while Sam sits on the foot of the first bed and Dean sits on the foot of the second.
1.04 Phantom Traveler
Dean. Dean is shown asleep on the first bed as Sam returns to the room with coffee.
1.05 Bloody Mary
Sam. Sam is shown asleep on the first bed just before he wakes from a nightmare.
1.06 Skin
NRS.
1.07 Hook Man

1.08 Bugs
NRS. The boys stay a night in an empty house.
1.09 Home
Dean. Sam is shown lounging on the second bed when he realizes his nightmare featured their old house in Lawrence.
1.10 Asylum
Dean. Sam is shown sitting on the second bed and Dean's duffel bag is on the first. (This episode ends in a different motel room with both asleep but I'm going to count it as part of the next episode.)
1.11 Scarecrow
Unclear. The boys are awoken by a phone call from John. The room door is never shown.
1.12 Faith
First room: Unclear. Sam's stuff is spread all over the first bed (while Dean in in the hospital) which may indicate Sam slept on the other one.
Second room: Dean. He tosses his keys onto the first bed. Later, Dean and Sam converse whilst Dean sits on the first bed and Sam sits on the second. Later still, Dean and Layla converse while sitting on the first bed.
1.13 Route 666
Unclear. Dean spends the night with Cassie at her house. Dean and Sam are shown in the motel room and Sam picks up his jacket from the second bed.
1.14 Nightmare
First room: Dean. Both are sleeping when Sam wakes up and begins packing and insists they leave.
Second room: Dean. When Dean is cleaning the weapons, they are spread out over the first bed. When they are packing to leave Dean's duffel is on the first bed.
1.15 The Benders
NRS. Sam is kidnapped and Dean spends most of the episode looking for him.
1.16 Shadow
Unclear. Sam drops the weapons duffel on the second bed; possibly just because Dean is standing by that one.
1.17 Hell House
Sam. Dean is lounging on the second bed when doodling the Blue Oyster Cult logo. Sam's clothes are on the first bed when he comes out of the shower.
1.18 Something Wicked
Dean. Sam sits on the second bed while researching Strigas. Dean's duffel is on the first bed.
1.19 Provenance
Unclear. The door is on the wall opposite the beds, so neither is technically closer.
1.20 Dead Man's Blood
Dean. (Does it count as protecting Sammy when John was also there, wide awake?)
1.21 Salvation
Dean. Dean is sitting on the first bed while Sam fills John in on his visions.
1.22 Devil's Trap
NRS/Unclear. The boys are too busy rescuing John and squaring off against YED to worry about sleeping.
SEASON TWO
DEAN = 1. SAM = 5
2.01 In My Time of Dying
NRS. Most of the episode is in the hospital after the car crash.
2.02 Everybody Loves a Clown
NRS. (Who could sleep when there's a killer clown on the loose?)
2.03 Bloodlust
Unclear. When Sam is alone in the room he sits on the first bed while calling Ellen.
2.04 Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things
Sam. He's sitting on the first bed when Dean comes in to catch him watching 'Casa Erotica.'
2.05 Simon Said
NRS.
2.06 No Exit
Unclear. No indication of where Sam slept and Dean slept in the chair. Jo was supposed to sleep in the bedroom but stayed up at the dining table instead.
2.07 The Usual Suspects
First room: Unclear. Sam is arrested in that room and the beds aren't shown.
Second room: Unclear. Sam has stuff on both beds and Dean is never in this room.
2.08 Crossroad Blues
NRS.
2.09 Croatoan
Unclear. When Sam wakes up from his vision of Dean shooting someone, he is on the floor between beds.
2.10 Hunted
Unclear. The only motel room shown isn't shared.
2.11 Playthings
First room: Sam. He sits on the first bed and Dean is on the second while Sam explains why he wants to take a new case.
Second room: Sam. Dean drops drunk Sam in the first bed.
2.12 Nightshifter
Unclear. Both beds have stuff strewn on them but neither one goes near the beds.
2.13 Houses of the Holy
Sam. Dean appreciates the Magic Fingers hooked up to the second bed.
2.14 Born Under a Bad Sign
Unclear. They never share the room. Dean throws his duffel on the first bed but sleeps on the floor after Sam knocks him unconscious before leaving. Plus, Sam was possessed by Meg the whole time.
2.15 Tall Tales
Dean. Sam gets mad because Dean is eating while lounging on Sam's bed.
2.16 Roadkill

2.17 Heart
Unclear. Sam stays at Madison's.
2.19 Folsom Prison Blues
NRS. The boys are placed in different cells.

Sam. At the end of the episode Dean is sitting on the second bed.

Unclear. Sam's stuff is spread across the first bed, but Dean planned to stay with Lisa. When Dean does come to the room he tosses his jacket on the first bed. At the end of the ep Sam is the only one who's spent time in the room and the second bed is unmade. So even though Dean never slept in that room, Sam still took the second bed.
3.03 Bad Day at Black Rock
Unclear. Dean parks Sam on a chair in the middle of the room.
3.04 Sin City
Sam. When they enter the room Dean goes straight to the second bed.
3.05 Bedtime Stories

Unclear. Dean tosses his jacket on the first bed but sits on the second one when the hex bag starts working on him.

Sam. In his 'happy' dream, he and Bella are on the first bed. Also when the boys drink the African Dream Root, Dean sits on the second bed and Sam on the first.

Dean. (Maybe this should count as 100 instead of one? ;) Side note: Sam's solo motel room only has one bed.
3.12 Jus in Bello
Dean. When Ruby comes to visit Sam is laying on the second bed. Side note: Jail: The boys shuffle around and sit with Dean closest to the cell door.

Sam. When Dean moves into Sam's motel room he sleeps on the pullout couch, which is further from the door.

Unclear. Both sleep in Bobby's living room. Sam on the couch and Dean on the floor.
4.03 In the Beginning
Dean. When Sam sneaks out of the motel room Dean is asleep in the first bed.
4.04 Metamorphosis
NRS. (Well, there is, but it's the same one as the last episode.)
4.05 Monster Movie

Unclear. The way the room is arranged neither seems closest to the door and Dean sits on both.

Dean. He's on the first bed cleaning the shotgun when Adam arrives. (Side note: When only Sam and Adam are in the motel room then Sam takes the first bed.)

Unclear. Dean sleeps in the first bed but Jimmy is in the other one. Sam is on watch duty.

NRS. Sam spends most of the episode locked in Bobby's panic room and I'm not counting the room Sam gets when he runs away.

Unclear. Dean sits on the second bed (but that may just be because it was closest to the TV.) Sam picks up his jacket from the first bed. Later, Dean sits on the first bed while sharpening stakes.

Second room: Unclear. Dean sets up a decoy in the second bed after he finally figures out Gary!Sam isn't actual Sam. Dean sits on the first bed while the unswitching spell is performed.
5.13 The Song Remains the Same
Dean. When Dean first wakes up the room door isn't shown. Later Cas sends Dean and Sam to the past and enough of the room is shown to locate the door.
5.14 My Bloody Valentine
Unclear. Neither goes near the beds.
5.15 Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid

Sam. He is on the first bed being held at gunpoint when Dean wakes up on the second bed. They're both killed minutes later.

Sam. Physically, the bed that Sam seems to have claimed is farther from the door. However, it is more accessible than the other. There's a bar between Dean's bed and the door.

Sam. Dean goes straight to the second bed to drop his bag when they come in. They're sleeping when the police radio goes off: Dean in the second bed, Sam in the first.

Rufus' cabin: Unclear. In this ep, the camera angle makes visible a set of bunk beds. This is in addition to the single bed that Sam was shown using in episode 7.12. However, there's still a pillow and blanket on the couch.
