[[Demons]] are formed in [[Hell]] by the corruption of a human soul over time. [[Lucifer]] made [[Lilith]] into the first demon in order to mock [[God]]'s creation of humanity. While in Hell, [[Dean]] eventually broke under [[Alastair]]'s torture and started torturing souls himself, and so likely would have been transformed without [[Castiel]]'s intervention. [[Angel Lore|Angels]] are able to rescue souls from Hell, though this generally requires a massive incursion, but a human can rescue a soul as well if they can sneak into and out of [[Hell]] with said soul.
When the demons of Hell prove reluctant to abandon their loyalty to Crowley, [[Abaddon]] decides to create her own demons by taking souls from still living humans, in order to create her own demon army. <ref>[[9.17 Mother's Little helper]]</ref>
