Souls are extremely valuable objects. As evidenced with Sam, the human soul gives humans their feelings, interest in food, water, and the need to sleep, indicating that one's personality comes from their soul. It is unclear why he wanted the soul, although he refers to souls as the only thing left of value, and he is eventually forced to return it.<ref name="six03" />
