“Special Children” is the name used by fandom to describe those children who, like Sam, were chosen by the Yellow-Eyed Demon to take part in war against humanity.
- I have plans Sammy, plans for you and all the children like you… Yellow-Eyed Demon (Devil’s Trap)
Special Children:
- Andrew (Andy) Gallagher - Mind Control
- Ansem Weems (Webber) - Mind Control
- Ava Wilson - Premonitions
- Jake Talley - Super Strength
- Lily - Heart Stopping Touch
- Max Miller - Telekinesis
- Rose - Telepathy (Mind Reading)
- Sam Winchester - Premonitions
- Scott Carey - Electrokinesis
- It is unclear why these particular children were chosen, whether the special children have any innate characteristics or abilities which led them to be chosen, or whether it was solely the intervention of the Yellow-Eyed Demon that made them special. In 2.22 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part Two, the Yellow-Eyed Demon shows Sam a flashback where he drips demon blood into baby Sam’s mouth. This may be a ritualistic anointing or a way of transmitting some demonic traits.
- There is a group of Special Children born in 1983. However we also met Rosie (Devil’s Trap), who is six months old, and the Yellow-Eyed Demon makes allusions to other generations of special children (2.21 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One).
- The Special children each have some form of psychic ability:
- Visions
- Can kill with touch
- Telekinesis
- Super Strength
- Mind Control
- Telepathy
These abilities can be developed through practice. Max learns better control of his telekinesis, Ansem improves his mind control to be able to do it silently, Andy develops his mind control to include transmitting images and Ava is able to summon demons.
- The Yellow-Eyed Demon spends a number of months bringing special children to the deserted town of Cold Oak, in order to pit them against each other and so choose the strongest one.
- The Yellow-Eyed Demon wants one of the special children to lead his demon army in a war against humans.
- Yellow-Eyed Demon also needs one of the special children to open the Devil's Gate in Wyoming, because a demon cannot cross the giant devil’s trap made by Samuel Colt of railway lines.
In season four 4.03 In The Beginning we learn that back in 1973 Azazel made pacts with various young people in Lawrence, none of which knew what they were getting themselves into. However, These pacts weren't for souls, but entrance into their homes in ten years time. Azazel says that it's a sort of demonic "red tape." which means the creating of the special children was a ritualistic practice. He also mentions that as long as he wasn't interrupted during the process, everyone would be fine, explaining why some of the psychic kids didn't lose their mothers or have a house fire; in those homes the demon wasn't interrupted.
Dean: For what?
Azazel: I need to be invited into their houses. I know, I know, the red tape'll drive you nuts.
Azazel hand picked every parent. He needed the parent of his psychic kids to be "strong."
Azazel: I'm here to pick the perfect parents, like your mommy.
Azazel was not after Mary in the first place. It wasn't until Dean interfered and brought the Campbells into the picture that she caught Azazel's eye. Azazel possesses Mary's father, Samuel and kills him and her mother Deanna. He then kills John as well, cornering Mary into a deal.
Azazel: Oh, no, you can keep your soul, I just need permission.
Mary: For what?
Azazel: Mmm, ten years I need to swing by your house for a little something, that's all.
