Spells are a combination of rituals and incantations used to harness and control magical power. They are used across many cultures and by a variety of practitioners. Witches are amongst the most powerful in developing and using spells. Rowena MacLeod was a very powerful witch, maybe the most powerful of all time . She was expelled from the Grand Coven who considered her magic too extreme.

While Witches have a deep knowledge of magic and spells, it is not necessary to be a witch to cast a spell. It is notable that hunters like Sam, Dean, and Bobby often use spells and rituals, but would not consider themselves witches. Over time, Sam becomes somewhat skilled in spells. In the attempt to banish the hell ghosts, Rowena asks for Sam's help with a spell because he's "as close to a seasoned witch as we've got in this lot." It is also implied that Rowena intended for Sam alone to inherit her magical stash including her spellbooks containing Rowena's life's work in magic.

Dean and Sam each summon Crowley in the Season 9 finale 9.23 Do You Believe in Miracles?. Crowley actually appears next to Dean's body, ignoring Sam's summons and suggesting that the spell is not something that compels Crowley to appear but something he can chose to answer or ignore.  Another theory is that Dean's room was close enough to where Sam was performing the summons that Crowley could answer the summons, but be out of Sam's view.  This would mean that the summons worked, but that Crowley has some flexibility in the exact proximity of the ritual for it to work.

The sigil Sam draws differs greatly from the one John used, depicting a circle within a single closed triangle, with three additional symbols drawn inside each triangle corner. The placement of the bowl of ingredients also changes; it is placed in the center of the circle. Only three lit candles are used and they are positioned on the tip of the triangle corners.

The standard method of summoning a crossroads demon is fairly simple. the ritual first requires the summoner to bury a box/container in the middle of a crossroads. The contents of the box must include graveyard dirt, a black cat bone, and a photograph of the person wishing to make a deal. Yarrow flowers being planted at the crossroads helps in the ritual, though appears to not be a necessary component. Sam recites this Latin incantation at a crossroads in 9.16 Blade Runners:

A second more standard summoning ritual has been performed by Sam and/or Dean in 6.11 Appointment in Samarra, 6.17 My Heart Will Go On, and 6.21 Let It Bleed - all of which were done to summon Balthazar. This ritual did not require the recitation of an incantation, rather only: an Enochian sigil with candles strategically placed around it, and a bowl of unknown ingredients, that once set aflame would cause Balthazar to instantaneously manifest.

Sam and Dean attempt to summon the spirit of Cole Griffith, who was the last person to die in Greybull, Wyoming, and question him why people have stopped dying. Sam and Dean set up at Cole's gravestone, arranging five candles around a pentacle drawn on a cloth spread over the grave. Sam puts a bundle of sticks in the center of the pentacle, and pours a substance in a bowl. However, due to Alastair arriving, they are unable to complete the ritual.

Sam and Dean help Bela by performing a summoning ritual to bring forth the spirit of the Captain of the Espírito Santo, hoping that it will put the Sailor’s Ghost to rest. Sam sets up a ritual circle, which includes five candles placed on the points of a pentagram and a bowl into which he pours a jar of red liquid. Another jar is on the opposite side of the circle with what appear to be herbs in it, and he places something else into the center of the circle. Sam then begins reciting in Latin:

Summoning the goddess Veritas requires three objects; a cat's skull, grains of paradise seed and devil's shoestring. Once done, Veritas will cause the summoner to receive the truth from anyone the summoner comes into contact with, until it becomes so unbearable the summoner kills themselves, allowing Veritas to collect her tribute. Once Veritas is summoned, a person in her vicinity will only have to ask aloud for the truth to invoke her, thus becoming unwilling tributes to her in the process.

A second variation of the spell was used in 8.15 Man's Best Friend with Benefits, like the prior spell it's exact contents are unknown other than chicken feet, however this version of the spell takes a liquid form. When James Frampton confronts the witch Spencer, and engages him in a fight Sam and Dean arrive and use the spell like a Molotov cocktail, Sam lights the bottle while reciting an invocation in Latin:

Defigere Et Depurgare
Defigere Et Depurgare, or it is known in it's English translation "To bind and purge" -- is a spell created by Rowena in the 18th century that causes demons to liquefy and get coughed up out of their meatsuit. All that is need to enact the spell is for a demon to posses a hex bag with the ingredients in it, it appears that the spell binds the demon to it's meatsuit to keep from escaping as it begins to liquefy the smoke into a sludge like substance as it gets purged from the host body. The spell was only practiced by Rowena and before she used it to kill Raul, wasn't seen since the 18th century.

Impetus Bestiarum
Impetus bestiarum (attacks of beasts), or as Rowena refereed to it -- "attack dog spell," is a spell wherein the witch places a hex bag in the hands of someone and recites "impetus bestiarum" causing the person to take on aggressive animal attributes.
+
Impetus bestiarum (attacks of beasts), or as Rowena referred to it, "attack dog spell", is a spell wherein the witch places a hex bag in the hands of someone and recites "impetus bestiarum" turning the object of the spell into an animalistic killer who can be directed to kill a particular individual. The spell will eventually kill the person it is cast on.
 +

 +
Rowena uses the spell on a waiter and Elle in 10.07 Girls, Girls, Girls, and casts it on Castiel in order to get him to kill Crowley after she removes the Mark from Dean and steals the Book of the Damned and Nadya's Codex in 10.23 Brother's Keeper.
 +

 +
To reverse the spell, the witch must chant the Latin words "Desiste. Ad levo onus tuum." Rowena used this in 11.03 The Bad Seed to reverse the attack dog spell she cast on Cas.
 +

 +
In 13.12 Various & Sundry Villains, Rowena casts this spell on fellow witches Jennie and Jamie Plum and simply orders them to "end it." In response, the two turn on and kill each other.
 +

 +
The effect of the spell on angels is different than its effect on humans. When initially put under its control, Castiel attempted to kill Crowley as instructed, but later regained control of himself. Even when not under its control, Castiel eyes tended to be the signature red of a victim of the spell, though they later returned to normal. However, the spell would occasionally reassert itself, causing Castiel to enter brief uncontrollable rages, and it prevented Hannah from being able to heal him. One side effect was that when the spell asserted itself, Castiel was able to break free of the Angel Cuffs' influence even while still wearing them and use his telekinesis. Both Castiel and the Winchesters stated that instead of Castiel's "angel wiring" fighting the spell off, it seemed to be "digging deeper" into his being, at one point causing Castiel immense pain as it tore at him as the spell tried to gain full control. Rowena stated a belief that it was only a matter of time before Castiel went "foaming at the mouth mad" and died like anyone else.

Gaelic Spell
 +
Rowena performs a Gaelic spell in an attempt to kill Dean Winchester. To perform the spell, Rowena first painted various Gaelic sigils on her body (possibly with blood), and when she was prepared to attack recited this Gaelic incantation:
 +

 +
<blockquote>
 +
A spioradí an tsaoil, éistigí liom!<br>
 +
Dóighigí an fear seo!<br>
 +
Dóighigí go luaithreach é!
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
This caused a blinding light to emit from the sigils painted on her body; the spell was ineffective, however, since Dean bore the Mark of Cain at the time of casting.

Angel Debilitating Spell
 +
Metatron performs this spell by writing various sigils along books on a shelf in his blood, and upon activating the blood magic caused Castiel to collapse in pain. However, once Castiel was able to consume the remnants of his original grace, the spell no longer had an effect on him.

This spell, performed by Catriona Loughlin on Sam Winchester in 12.11 Regarding Dean, simply requires a witch to recite this Latin incantation:

 +
<blockquote>
 +
Age nunc intellectum.<br>
 +
Age nunc intellectum atque voluntatem omnem meam.
 +
</blockquote>
 +

Doing so will cause the victim to be beset with a piercing high-pitched ringing that will paralyze them and cause blood to flow from the ears before rendering them unconscious.

Suffocetur
 +
Suffocetur is a Latin spell used by Donatello Redfield in 13.14 Good Intentions against Dean Winchester. After being restrained by Sam for attacking him, Donatello recites the word suffocetur to Dean, causing the air to leave his lungs, temporarily suffocating him.

Mors Lumine
 +
Mors Lumine is a spell Rowena uses to kill reapers. She simply has to look at the reaper and recite the Latin phrase "mors lumine" (death lights) to incinerate her victims as well as the reapers that arrived to take their souls to the afterlife, leaving an imprint on the ground next to the victim's remains.

Spirit Ejection
A simple spell performed by Belphegor to blast the souls of the damned out of their possessed corpses. With a handful of cemetery dirt and some angel blood, Belphegor only needed to clap his hands together to propel the souls out of their respective meatsuits.

Getting the reaper to do the summoner's bidding (i.e. kill) also requires a photo of the intended victim, with their face crossed out placed on the altar and for the summoner to recite a Latin incantation while holding a coptic cross filled with blood. If the altar and cross are destroyed the reaper will be released from his binding.

Tracking Spells
Tracking spells are used to locate the whereabouts of a specific target. The first instance of a tracking spell being used on Supernatural came from Bobby Singer. When Sam and Dean needed to find the location of Lilith, to stop her from collecting on Dean's crossroads deal, they seek the help of Bobby, who performs a tracking spell to suss out Lilith's location. Bobby's spell used a special pendulum that was placed over a map, according to him with the right name and right ritual, he could pin point the exact street Lilith is located on. Once the pendulum starts swinging an incantation must be spoken:

Ruby uses a location spell in 4.16 On the Head of a Pin, when Sam asks her to track down where the angels have taken Dean to torture Alastair. For the spell, Ruby simply recites a Latin incantation, and sets a map on fire, the flames incinerate the entire leaving only Dean's location uncharred.

The Mark
 +
The spell that God used to bind the Darkness in order to start Creation. According to Michael, the spell requires myrrh, cassia, and rock rose, along with the nectar from a Leviathan Blossom to bind the spell together. Whomever is the planned recipient of the Mark is also required to add their blood to the ingredients. The spell requires that the entity be in a weakened state when the spell is cast for it to work; the four archangels were required to weaken the Darkness before God could trap her. Chuck being in a weakened state due to being shot with the Equalizer, left Him vulnerable to being trapped. It also requires the blood of the being that will take on the Mark.

Castiel uses a location spell in 5.13 The Song Remains the Same, in order to track the angel Anna's whereabouts. The spell requires unspecified herbs mixed in a bowl that is set atop a sigil, oil is then poured into the bowl and an Enochian incantation is recited:
+
Once the ingredients have been mixed, an Enochian incantation must be recited:

<blockquote>

+
Zee-loh-dah-rup, ah-lahr, zee-zohp, ah-buh-rah-muh-jzh, ahm-ee-zuh-pee

</blockquote>

</blockquote>

Once done a red flame bursts from the bowl, and Castiel is able to ascertain Anna's location.
+
Once the final ingredients are added, smoke will manifest from the spell bowl and be absorbed into an orb which must then be smashed in front of God.

While trying to locate the angel Gadreel, Castiel finds notes in the Men of Letters library by James Haggerty titled "On the Inner Workings of Angels." In the notes, it is learned that angels leave a small amount of grace in their vessels upon leaving them, it is theorized if the grace can be extracted, it can be used in a tracking spell to track down the angel. To extract the grace, a needle must be stuck in the former vessel, the extraction process is very painful, and nearly killed Sam before Castiel put a stop to it, and healed him, destroying what grace remained in Sam's body.

To perform the spell, the grace must be mixed in a bowl with other unknown ingredients, however the amount extracted from Sam was not enough to use in the spell.

Rift Sealing Spell
 +
When Kelly Kline's Nephilim child creates a tear in space and time to another universe in 12.23 All Along the Watchtower, the Winchesters, Castiel, and Crowley use the rift to trap Lucifer in the alternate universe. Crowley performs the spell by mixing Dead Sea brine, mercury, lamb's blood, holy oil, and other ingredients in a bowl on top of a pentagram. The final ingredient requires a sacrifice of life. Upon confronting Lucifer, in an act of defiance denying Lucifer the chance to take his life, Crowley stabs himself with an angel blade, completing the spell and activating the closing of the rift.
 +
 +
Rift Opening Spell
 +
With the aid of the angel tablet, the Kevin Tran of Apocalypse World is able to devise a spell to open a new rift between the worlds. The key ingredient is archangel grace. After mixing the various ingredients in a bowl, the archangel grace is poured over it while an Enochian incantation is recited:
 +
 +
<blockquote>
 +
Mah ray, fay doh, em lah.<br>
 +
Kah day, em lah! Kah day, em lah!
 +
</blockquote>
 +
 +
The archangel grace turns a golden color as a tear in space and time begins appearing and is fully formed after a shock wave of energy. The spell comes with a caveat, however: it only allows one person to go through it before sealing up. Kevin is later able to perfect the spell to remove this limitation though Michael apparently needs to travel to a location where the walls between the worlds are thin for it to work. However, this was apparently only a lie and part of the trap Michael had set using Kevin, as Michael subsequently needed the alternate version of the spell to cross universes.
 +
 +

 +
An alternate version of the spell derived from the demon tablet requires four key ingredients: The blood of a most holy man, fruit from the Tree of Life, archangel grace, and the Seal of Solomon to direct the energy and create the rift. To open a rift to the desired destination also requires something that is from or has been to the other universe/dimension. When calling forth the cosmic deities Yokoth and Glythur, the incantations used to open the rift are:
 +
 +
<blockquote>
 +
Insanidox Koth Munto, Yokoth! or<br>
 +
Insanidox Koth Munto, Glythur!
 +
</blockquote>
 +
 +
When opening a rift to Apocalypse World, Sam recites the incantation:
 +
 +
<blockquote>
 +
Koth Munto Notox
 +
</blockquote>
 +
 +
Unlike the spell used by Kevin Tran in Apocalypse World, rifts created with these ingredients will remain open for 24 hours. The rift can also be closed by using the Seal of Solomon and reciting:
 +
 +
<blockquote>
 +
Panto Koth Munto!
 +
</blockquote>
 +
 +
When the Winchesters use this spell, Dean's hair is enough to act as a guide. Despite the fact that Dean has been to both Apocalypse World and The Bad Place, the spell is able to open the correct rift. Rowena states at one point that the magic is so simple that a drunk six-year old could perform the spell.
 +
 +
When the rift opens, according to Ophelia, you can never be sure of where it will end up. The first time the spell was used by the Winchesters, it opened in an unknown snowy forest on Apocalypse World. The second time, the rift opened on a hill in Northeastern Kentucky.
 +
 +
When Rowena uses this spell, she is able to channel the magic through her hands instead of the Seal of Solomon, suggesting that the Seal's only purpose in the spell is to channel it, and that someone properly trained in magic doesn't require the Seal. Also, when an archangel's grace is used to continuously power the spell instead of a portion of it, the portal can remain open much longer. Rowena uses a slightly different incantation than Sam did:
 +
 +
<blockquote>
 +
Koth Munto Nontox
 +
</blockquote>
 +
 +
By reciting the same incantation and placing her hand upon the Black Grimoire, apparently drawing power from the spellbook itself, Rowena was able to channel more power into the rift, keeping it open for a few minutes longer.
 +
 +
In 14.09 The Spear, Dark Kaia explains that she was able to use a spell from her own world to open a rift to the Winchesters' world. However, this magic doesn't work in their world, so Dark Kaia can't use the same spell to go back home.
 +
 +
In 15.12 Galaxy Brain, Sam suggests that he can try to tweak the spell to open a rift to the Bad Place since they have no archangel grace. However, the Winchesters know that the only substitute that would work is Nephilim grace, which they can't use because of the danger of God detecting its usage and realizing that Jack is alive again.
 +
 +
In 15.13 Destiny's Child Sam uses a variation of the spell in the demon tablet to pull Sam and Dean's alternate universe doubles -- who had been trapped between dimensions -- into their world. The main difference in the spell involves substituting archangel grace with some of Castiel's grace. This version of the spell required the spell bowl to be set in front of where the alternate Sam and Dean were visible and did not use the Seal of Solomon. Castiel's grace was sufficient as the travelers were already halfway there, stuck between worlds, and thus the rift did not require nearly as much power. The incantation for this version is the same as the one Rowena used when opening the rift to Apocalypse World.

The Empty
 +
Using another spell, Nick is able to open a portal to the Empty. The spell requires the blood of one of Lucifer's vessels, Nick's blood, and the blood of someone from Lucifer's bloodline, Jack's blood. The spell caster must encircle themselves in a ring of salt. After burning the blood, the following words must be recited.
 +
 +
<blockquote>
 +
Qui dormiunt, ad dominum formosum. Nexus noster restitutus est.<br>
 +
Surgas ex abysso, in lumine exsistas.
 +
</blockquote>
 +
 +
Afterwards, the portal to the Empty opens and Lucifer emerges. However, casting the spell alerts Jack of Nick's location. Upon arrival, Jack is able to send Lucifer back to the Empty and close the portal.

 +
Hell
 +
Needing entry into Hell, Sam, Dean, and Castiel use one of Rowena's spells. The ingredients needed for the spell are unknown, beyond the blood of one of the people being transported. In addition, one of the other ingredients appears to be a blood of an unknown origin. When all the ingredients are mixed together in a bowl, whoever intends to go to Hell must place their hands on the bowl and a Latin incantation must be recited before setting the contents aflame.
 +
 +
<blockquote>
 +
Initium ad inferna permittatur
 +
</blockquote>
 +
 +
The participants are then transported to Hell in a flash of light. A purple flame will burn in the bowl, and must be continually fed, for if it is extinguished, those that traveled to Hell will be trapped there. It is unclear how exactly they are transported, but Castiel tells Jack that if the fire goes out the rift will be closed, suggesting that it may open an invisible portal of some sort.
 +
 +
It is unclear how the participants initiate the journey back but they are shown to reappear in a burst of purple flames, similar to the flame in the spell bowl. Once they return, the fire in the bowl is immediately extinguished.

Tracking Spells
 +
Tracking spells are used to locate the whereabouts of a specific target. The first instance of a tracking spell being used on Supernatural came from Bobby Singer. When Sam and Dean need to find the location of Lilith to stop her from collecting on Dean's crossroads deal, they seek the help of Bobby, who performs a tracking spell to suss out Lilith's location. Bobby's spell used a special pendulum that was placed over a map. According to him, with the right name and right ritual he could pinpoint the exact street Lilith is located on. Once the pendulum starts swinging an incantation must be spoken:
 +
 +
Ruby uses a location spell in 4.16 On the Head of a Pin when Sam asks her to track down where the angels have taken Dean to torture Alastair. For the spell, Ruby simply recites a Latin incantation, and sets a map on fire. The flames incinerate the entire page, leaving only Dean's location uncharred.
 +
 +
Castiel uses a location spell in 5.13 The Song Remains the Same in order to track the angel Anna's whereabouts. The spell requires unspecified herbs mixed in a bowl that is set atop a sigil. Oil is then poured into the bowl and an Enochian incantation is recited:
 +
<blockquote>
 +
Zod ah ma ra la ee est la gi ro sa.
 +
</blockquote>
 +
 +
Once done a red flame bursts from the bowl, and Castiel is able to ascertain Anna's location.

Mark of Cain Location Spell
 +
This spell was discovered by Tara during her years hunting for the First Blade. She was able to collect all the ingredients needed except one — Essence of Kraken, something Crowley had a warehouse full of in Belize. The other ingredients listed on the page are Wolfsbane, Angelica Root, Oil of Copal, and flower urchin spikes. Once the ingredients are mixed together, the liquid is poured over a map and then lit aflame. The fire consumes the map, leaving only the general location of the First Blade untouched. It was later revealed that the location spell was not for the First Blade, but for the source of the blade's power; The Mark of Cain.

Angelic Tracking Spell
 +
While trying to locate the angel Gadreel, Castiel finds notes in the Men of Letters library by James Haggerty titled "On the Inner Workings of Angels." In the notes, it is learned that angels leave a small amount of grace in their vessels upon leaving them. It is theorized that if the grace can be extracted, it can be used in a tracking spell to find the angel. To extract the grace, a needle must be stuck in the former vessel; the extraction process is very painful, and nearly kills Sam before Castiel puts a stop to it and heals him, destroying what grace remained in Sam's body.
 +
 +
To perform the spell, the grace must be mixed in a bowl with other unknown ingredients, however the amount extracted from Sam was not enough to use in the spell.
 +
 +
Body Swapping Spell
 +
The body swapping spell was used by Gary in 5.12 Swap Meat. When Gary, Trevor, and Nora were messing around with dark forces they learn of the bounty that Hell has put on Dean Winchester's head, and when Gary spots Sam and Dean, he comes up with the idea of using a body swapping spell as means to get close to Dean and kill him for the bounty. The details of the spell are not revealed in the episode.

Death Transference Spell
 +
A death transference spell was used by Charlie in 4.12 Criss Angel Is a Douchebag. The spell required the placement of a hexed tarot card on the intended victim. Any harm that would come to Vernon as he performed dangerous/deadly escape tricks would instead be wrought on the person in possession of the tarot card.

De-aging Spell
 +
The witch Patrick recites a Gaelic incantation over poker chips which causes them to become set aflame. Once done, when a person bets with the chips, they will lose or gain years to their life. Patrick later indicates that the spell itself is mostly theater and the real magic lies in Patrick himself.

Lannraich gu dealrach a-nis.<br>
 +
Las suas agus cuir ás an teine.<br>
 +
Mar sin bitheadh.

</blockquote>
 +
 +
Reversal Spell
 +
Lia gives Bobby and Dean a reversal spell which if done right will reverse all of Patrick's magic, and revert everyone still living back to the their rightful ages. The only revealed ingredients for the spell include the jawbone of a murderer and DNA of the witch. The ingredients must be placed in a bowl and set aflame while a Gaelic incantation is recited.
 +
 +
<blockquote>
 +
Airmidh mi air maponus, dia— na hogalachd. Gairmidh mi air sucellus, dia na time.<br>

Till an-dràsda obair uile gu bheilair a bhith deànta. Mar sin bitheadh.

However the spell did not work in 5.07 The Curious Case of Dean Winchester, as the tooth pick they procured from Patrick never crossed his lips.

The angel expulsion spell, was a spell performed by Metatron to expel all the angels from Heaven. Metatron tricked Castiel into helping him gather the needed ingredients under the ruse of performing the trials from the angel tablet and locking Heaven down to try and bring peace to all the warring factions. The spell required three specific ingredients that are tied to angels. The first ingredient was to kill and remove the heart of a Nephilim, the second ingredient required the bow of a Cupid, for which the cherub Gail gave up to Dean and Castiel without incident, the third and final ingredient was an angel's grace. According to Crowley's translation of the proto-Elamite cuneiform the next phase required Metatron to "mix until the smoke shall rise from the ashes casting the angels from Heaven," and that the spell was irreversible. Completion of the spell quickly caused all the angels to be ejected from Heaven, included the imprisoned ones. Many angels were killed in the fall, and left the others injured and weakened.

Famulatus
 +
Famulatus (Servitude) is a servitude spell, first seen in 10.07 Girls, Girls, Girls. To enact it one must place a hex bag with unknown ingredients in the palm of the intended servant's hand, and say "famulatus." The person will then become a servant to whomever placed the spell on them.
 +

 +
Wings of Titania
 +
Rowena uses this spell as a means to spy on her son Crowley's meeting with the Winchesters. The spell uses an unknown mixture of ingredients placed in a bowl, and requires a structure made of small bones to be erected in the bowl, draped in an object belonging to the person who is to be located/spied on. Once set up, an invocation must be spoken:
 +

 +
<blockquote>
 +
Wings of Titania, bear mine eyes aloft as I bid thee.
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
Once done, the spell caster will appear to have an out of body experience, taking them to their intended target.
 +

 +
Rowena uses this spell in 10.10 The Hunter Games and 11.18 Hell's Angel. She also appears to use it in 11.22 We Happy Few, but is detected by Clea and forced to return to her body to talk with Clea in person. Later in the same episode, she uses it to contact Amara in the Bunker as part of the trap for her.

Rune of Amaranth
 +
The Rune of Amaranth is an illusion spell first cultivated in the 18th century. The Winchesters and Castiel plan to use a young boy, Austin, as bait to lure and trap Cain. Crowley arrives with the First Blade, but refuses to give it to Dean until Cain is trapped, which leads him to perform the Rune of Amaranth spell to make sure Cain isn't able to kill Austin until he is put in a devil's trap.

Repelling Spell
 +
A simple spell used by Rowena when her son Crowley has angered her. As she is storming out of his throne room, she simply says the word "Abite" (get or go away), and throws her hands to the side, which causes the destruction of any objects in her periphery.
 +

 +
In 12.03 The Foundry, Rowena uses this spell to banish Lucifer to the bottom of the ocean.
 +

 +
In 15.06 Golden Time, the Witch Mother uses a variation of this spell, "Ubra, Abi," to temporarily banish the ghost of Eileen Leahy.
 +

 +
Cabirian Invocation
 +
In order for Sam to bypass the Werther Box's security measure, he seeks advice from Rowena in how to break the enchantment spell. Rowena suggests the Cabirian invocation -- an all-purpose disenchantment, with easy-to-obtain ingredients. According to Rowena, the spell is not recommended for amateurs, as it has a tendency to fizzle out. The spell requires an unspecified flower to be mixed with unspecified powders in a bowl and set aflame, with this Romanian incantation spoken over it:
 +

 +
<blockquote>
 +
Purificare la magia.
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
Due to the flame burning out before Sam could recite the Latin, the Cabirian invocation is ineffective in counteracting the Werther Box's defense mechanism.
 +

 +

 +

 +
Removing the Mark of Cain
 +
The Mark of Cain is the first curse; to remove it from everyone who bears it at once would mean releasing the Darkness, for which the Mark was created to keep locked away. The spell can only be done by a witch that can understand old, dark magic from the time of creation. To remove the Mark, the spell requires four ingredients: Something made by God, but forbidden to man (the forbidden fruit); something made by man, but forbidden by God (the golden calf); genetic material from the person who bears the Mark (Dean's hair); and finally, the witch performing the spell must kill someone they love and sacrifice their blood.
 +

 +
Mix the ingredients and recite the following Latin incantation:
 +

 +
<blockquote>
 +
Ab manu dei.
 +
Ab manu hominis.
 +

 +
Ab cruore cordis
 +
Mei adfusuro in aeternum.
 +

 +
Tolle maledictionem tuam
 +
ab hoc viro.
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
If done correctly a bolt of red lightning will strike the arm of the holder of the Mark of Cain and remove it.
 +

 +
Paralyzing Spell
 +
Rowena places this spell on Crowley in 10.23 Brother's Keeper. After being freed by the blast wave from the Mark of Cain cure, Rowena simply says "Manete" (Latin for "remain") to Crowley, freezing his meatsuit where it stands. The spell is lifted by another witch hours later. The spell appears to have an effect on Crowley's powers in 11.01 Out of the Darkness, Into the Fire as he is unable to perform any of his usual feats even in another body until the spell is broken.
 +

 +
In 12.02 Mamma Mia, Rowena once again uses her paralyzing spell on Lucifer, which only temporarily immobilizes the archangel before he is able to regain control.
 +

 +
In 13.12 Various & Sundry Villains, Rowena uses the spell on Sam and Dean. They break the spell when they are able to burn the hex bag Rowena used with the spell.
 +

 +
Spell of Gathering
 +
The spell of gathering is an incantation used to "focus the power of celestial beings against all drawn forms of evasion." The spell was designed by the Men of Letters to clear all forms of mystical or occult blockages. The spell was considered purely theoretical and was never able to be used, as it required tapping into the power of an archangel. The ingredients to the spell appear to require the bones of a small creature, a dried lizard, some type of root, and a brain.
 +

 +
Healing Spell
 +
In 11.18 Hell's Angel Rowena uses a spell on Amara to help heal her of her injuries after surviving the angel smiting. Rowena lays her hands over Amara and recites the incantation:
 +

 +
<blockquote>
 +
Mahday, eelohtah sahn. Serloh, eelohtah.
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
Resurrection Charm
 +
<blockquote>I, long ago, secreted within my person a wee casket of powerful magic. When the spell inside me sensed my life-force ebbing... it went to work. And I was revived.</blockquote>
 +

 +
In 11.18 Hell's Angel  Rowena relates to Amara how she survived her neck being snapped by Lucifer, as long ago she secreted a Resurrection Charm of powerful magic within herself, and once the spell sensed her life force ebbing, it resurrected her. She was resurrected a second time following her death in 12.23 All Along the Watchtower.
 +

 +
Arthur Ketch also learned of Rowena's resurrection charm from a time when the Men of Letters captured and tortured her. He struck a deal with Rowena, sewing the charm into his body in exchange for letting her escape.
 +

 +
In 14.18 Absence, Rowena tells Jack Kline that this spell only works as a failsafe and cannot be used to resurrect someone who has died without the spell implanted within them.
 +

 +
As Rowena prepares to sacrifice herself in 15.03 The Rupture, she cuts her last resurrection charm out of her shoulder.
 +

 +
Diminishing Spell
 +
In 11.22 We Happy Few , Rowena allies herself with four other witches and attacks Amara with this spell in an effort to weaken her.
 +

 +
The spell appears quite complex, requiring multiple witches to cooperate for it to work (four witches as support, and a fifth that acts as relay). A large amount of unknown ingredients is gathered (including coal, owl feathers, yarrow roots, and a jaw bone of pig). The ingredients are mixed on a bowl atop an intricate sigil. A hoodoo is then placed atop the mixture and ignited. Once done, the four support witches must recite a Latin word:
 +

 +
<blockquote>
 +
Attenuare!
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
After the mixture is ignited, the fifth witch also utters "Attenuare" (meaning "to Diminish" or "Weaken") and then acts as a conduit and relays the spell in the form of purple lightning. It is unknown what effects this spell can have on normal supernatural beings. It appears to weaken Amara to some extent, allowing demons and angels, and later Lucifer, to harm her. However, given her power level, Amara appears simply annoyed by the spell and is pushed back by it only slightly. She then proceeds to reflect much of the spell back onto Rowena. As she was merely acting as a conduit for the other witches, Rowena herself is merely hurled back. Her support witches, however, are all incinerated by the same purple lightning generated by the spell.

In 13.19 Funeralia, Rowena appears to use a non-verbal version of this spell against Billie, the new Death. The spell has no effect on Billie and instead drains Rowena's magical energies to the point that she is unsure if she will ever fully recover what she used up.

 +
Chinese Mind Control Spell
 +
Backed into a corner when the Winchesters free themselves, Lady Antonia Bevell uses a Chinese mind control technique to subdue Mary Winchester. The spell requires the performer to make an open wound in their hand and recite the phrase "Xi." Doing so will immobilize and begin to suffocate the intended victim. The spell can be broken by simply knocking the performer unconscious.

 +
Festina
 +
With Lucifer's vessel deteriorating, Rowena is forced to perform a spell to make Vince Vincente's body more durable and stronger. Rowena draws a druidic glyph with Hawthorne tree ash on Lucifer's chest, telling him the spell is of her own creation and a mix of Book of the Damned magic and traditional Celtic. Rowena walks around with incense before placing her hand on his chest, and reciting the Latin phrase:
 +

 +
<blockquote>
 +
Festina
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
This hastens the deterioration of the vessel rather than strengthening it.
 +

 +
Dearmad
 +
Dearmad is a Celtic spell used to make a individual slowly lose his memory, eventually killing them. The spell uses an archaic form of Celtic practiced by the druids known as "ogham chraobh" -- the "language of the trees." The witch will paint a Celtic glyph in their blood on a tree and recite the phrase "dearmad" (forget), and blast of energy will hit their target knocking them unconscious. In 12.11 Regarding Dean, the witch Gideon Loughlin uses the spell to curse Dean, who slowly begins forgetting people, places, and things, eventually forgetting how to speak. The only method to reverse the spell is by using the Black Grimoire.

Soul Swapping Spell
 +

 +
A Celtic spell found in the Black Grimoire which is capable of resurrecting the dead. All that is known of the spell is that it requires a human sacrifice and glyphs drawn in blood on the body being resurrected. In 13.12 Various & Sundry Villains the Plum sisters attempt to perform the spell to resurrect their mother but are only able to complete a portion of it, bringing their mother back as a zombie.

 +
Colt Bullets
 +
In order to create working bullets for the Colt in 12.14 The Raid, Sam gives Mick Davies the recipe he learned from Bobby Singer. To create working bullets for the Colt, silver bullets must be mixed in a tincture of holy oil, sage, and myrrh. Once mixed, a Latin incantation must be spoken over the bullets:
 +

 +
<blockquote>
 +
Signum est imitandum,<br>
 +
Signum est imitandum
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
Blood Purification Ritual
 +
A simple purification ritual used by Sam to purify his, Dean's, and Lady Antonia Bevell's blood in 12.22 Who We Are to "re-virginize" their blood, in order to use the Abrogation ritual, which requires virgin blood. The ritual itself is simple -- a Latin incantation is spoken as blood is spilled into a bowl of various ingredients.
 +
 +
Abrogation Ritual
 +
Also called "the Devla" by Sam, this is a ritual spell that turns back complex mechanical processes and resets equipment and machinery, originally used by the Romani people as an act of rebellion against their forced assimilation in Europe.
 +

 +
The spell requires simple basic ingredients as well as the blood of a virgin; when mixed together the caster will sprinkle an unknown ingredient while reciting the incantation:
 +

 +
<blockquote>
 +
Farmichi, farmichi, mashuna parra, mashuna parra
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
Nephilim Tracking Spell
 +
The Nephilim tracking spell is a Caananite spell that dates back to the time of King Solomon, who used it to keep tabs on the Queen of Sheba, who was a Nephilim.
 +

 +
Sanguis Infernus
 +
Sanguis infernus (Hell blood) is a spell that was devised by the demon known as Grab. The spell causes any human that has been to Hell and back to act as a dowsing rod to locate Luther Shrike's specially warded vault. The spell simply requires a Latin invocation.

Famulatus
+
<blockquote>
Famulatus (Servitude) is a servitude spell, first seen in 10.07 Girls, Girls, Girls. To enact it one must place a hex bag with unknown ingredients in the palm of the intended servant to be's hand, and say "famulatus." The person will then become a servant to whomever placed the spell on them.
+
Sanguis infernus, anima nunc.<br>
 +
Viam manifesta.<br>
 +
Sanguis inferne, viam ostende.
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
According to Grab, the spell works on the principle that "like attracts like" and it causes the person's arm to pull them in the direction of the vault. Once nearby, the spell automatically breaks and the person regains full control of their arm.
 +

 +
Aegrota amore
 +
Aegrota amore (Sick love) is a love spell used by the Plum sisters on Dean Winchester in 13.12 Various & Sundry Villains. The spell is simple, only requiring planting a hex bag on an unsuspecting victim and reciting the Latin phrase, aegrota amore, which will cause the person's eyes to flash pink as they fall instantaneously in love and become willing to do anything for the witch who performed the spell.

Binding Release Spell
 +

 +
A Druidic Celtic spell found in the Black Grimoire, used by Rowena in 13.12 Various & Sundry Villains. The spell has the ability to remove strong binding magic that has been placed upon an individual. The spell requires the person to sit in the middle of a pentagram adorned with various glyphs and candles at each point of the star. A Latin incantation must be recited:
 +

 +
<blockquote>
 +
Ego sum filia naturae.<br>
 +
Cum osculatione lunae.<br>
 +
Da mihi vocem liberatam.<br>
 +
Remitte vim meam.<br>
 +
Fiam invincta.<br>
 +
Ego sum filia naturae.<br>
 +
Cum osculatione lunae.<br>
 +
Da mihi vocem liberatam.<br>
 +
Remitte vim meam.<br>
 +
Fiam invincta!
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
A cut must then be made down the neck of the individual, releasing the spell work and revealing the binding magic, which will then begin to break, freeing the person of the magic.
 +

 +
Reversal Spell
 +
This reversal spell was found in the White Magic Lexicon and used in an attempt to reverse the aging hex that was placed on a young girl, Lora, by a witch. The spell required sage, pyrite, and sheep’s eye, as well as reciting the Latin invocation thrice:
 +

 +
<blockquote>
 +
Cantamen solvatur; cantamen revertatur. (Undo the spell; reverse the spell)
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
However, due to the curse being connected to witch's pendant, the reversal spell only helped to exacerbate the hex, causing Lora to age faster and eventually die.
 +

 +
Examination Spell
 +
Rowena is called in by Sam to help understand what is wrong with Jack. She recites a Latin invocation over Jack's body, repeating the phrase:
 +

 +
<blockquote>
 +
Possim rei huius cognoscere causas. (Tell me the cause of this)
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
Which allows Rowena to learn that Jack's Nephilim nature as a half-human, half-angel is unable to sustain his body without his grace.
 +

 +
This spell is possibly from the Book of the Damned which was open next to Jack's bedside when Rowena performed it.
 +

 +
Recharging Spell
 +
Castiel is given a vial of Gabriel's grace by the shaman Sergei, as well as a spell, to use as a recharging agent in an attempt to shock Jack out of his deterioration. As Jack consumes the grace, Rowena recites the spell precisely:
 +

 +
<blockquote>
 +
Potione hac, restitutus Eris. Omnia erunt sicut erant! (When you drink this, you will be restored and things will be as they were)
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
Jack's eyes glow golden, and he appears to be in good health once again. Unfortunately, the effects are only temporary and Jack soon collapses in a coughing fit. Sergei later tells Castiel that the spell was only an experiment and he didn't actually know if it would work or not.
 +

 +
Magice Necromantiorum
 +
A resurrection spell from the Book of the Damned created by Agnes to resurrect her friends who starved to death while in prison. It requires great power, relatively common ingredients, and the body of the deceased. Following the accidental death of Mary Winchester, Jack Kline attempted to use this spell to resurrect her. However, he lacked Mary's body and the spell failed, only succeeding in bringing back the body. Sam later states that Rowena believed the spell only brought back a shell, incapable of holding life.

Soul Expulsion Spell
 +
A spell which can expel souls from bodies they are possessing. Belphegor was able to cast it using only graveyard dirt and angel blood which he held in his hands and then slapped together. The spell instantly blasted all of the nearby Hell Ghosts out of the corpses they were using. The spell appears to have no incantation.
 +

 +
Soul Barrier
 +
Acting much like a mile-wide salt circle, the containment spell performed by Belphegor only requires two ingredients: a mound of salt and a human heart (the fresher, the better). After placing the heart on top of the salt, a Latin incantation is recited:
 +
<blockquote>
 +
Animi... infernorum... spiritus abyssi surrecti... defigo... vos intra confinia. Vinciamni!
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
Slamming a hand on the ground then causes a red energy to pulse from the heart and rush out, creating an invisible barrier which no ghosts can cross. It is referred to as a ward in 15.02 Raising Hell. It also appears to contain demons as well as long as they don't have a meatsuit like Belphegor and Ardat. One major weakness of the barrier is that by possessing someone, a soul trapped by the barrier can cross through it, as seen when Francis Tumblety possesses Arthur Ketch.
 +

 +
Rafforza l'incantesimo
 +
Rafforza l'incantesimo is a potent transubstantiation spell that Rowena tries to use to strengthen the barrier Belphegor had constructed to contain the Hell Ghosts. She says it can "turn gossamer into concrete."
 +

 +
<blockquote>
 +

 +
Dalla nebbia, cemento possente,<br>
 +
impenetrabile, inflessibile.<br>
 +
Rendilo forte!
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
It fails to work as there are too many ghosts with too much angry energy and the barrier itself has grown too weak.
 +

 +
Sanetur Acre Vulnus
 +
A healing spell created by Rowena, it is capable of healing the Rupture created by God. The ingredients are relatively simple: lavender, myrrh, and an owl skull. However, it requires two people to perform the spell itself and a third to toss the hex bag into the wound.
 +

 +
<blockquote>
 +
Mundus fractus est.<br>
 +
Sanetur acre vulnus.<br>
 +
Adveniant harena atque.<br>
 +
saxum, sursum, et deorsum.<br>
 +
Claudatur porta inter orbes terrarum...<br>
 +
...nobis et illis.<br>
 +
</blockquote>
 +

 +
After the spell is performed by Rowena, Sam, and Dean, the Rupture slowly closes over before eventually sealing.
 +

 +
Death Is an Infinite Vessel
 +

 +
A spell from the Book of the Damned to contain souls within the caster's body for a time. The spell is powerful enough to hold even the vast multitudes of souls and demons in Hell and is simple, requiring only two ingredients. However, the first ingredient is the still-coursing blood of the caster, while the other is their final breath. The effect of the spell is that once the caster is mortally wounded, they can draw all nearby souls and demons into themselves, where they will be contained. The spell is sealed by the caster's death. The souls will remain trapped in the corpse until it breaks down and releases them.
 +

 +
In 15.03 The Rupture, following the failed plan to use Lilith's Crook to draw all of the souls back into Hell, Rowena decides to use Death Is an Infinite Vessel as an alternative, planning to absorb all of the released souls and demons and then throw herself into the closing rupture to Hell. As a result, once her body breaks down, the contained souls and demons will be released right back where they belong. At her request, Sam reluctantly mortally wounds Rowena with a knife to the abdomen after she removes her last Resurrection Charm, and all of the souls are sucked into her body through the wound. Rowena then jumps into Hell, taking all of the contained souls with her back where they belong, at the cost of her own life.

 +
Unlocking spell
 +
When Jacinda goes to Rowena's Apartment she whispers "Aperiatur" into the lock to open the doors.
 +

 +
Resurrection Spell
 +
When Sam and the ghost of Eileen Leahy go to Rowena's apartment in 15.06 Golden Time, they find a hidden room containing all her ingredients and books for her magic. She also kept journals, and one of them outlines a spell she was working on after Mary died. The spell aimed to resurrect someone when there was no body. The Witch Mother makes it clear that the resurrection spell can only be used once, telling Sam that once Death sees a loop hole, "she closes it."
 +

 +
At the Bunker, Sam uses the spell to bring Eileen back. It involves ingredients being placed in a bath and an incantation:
 +

 +
Mortuum oritur. <br>
 +
Rutum revertitur <br>
 +
Ex spiritu incarnatum est. <br>

 +

 +
Rises and withdrawn.<br>
 +

 +
Eileen's ghost enters the bath, submerges her spirit in the water, and after the incantation she is reborn naked, again human, from the bath.
 +

 +
God later reveals that He orchestrated Eileen's resurrection so that He could use Eileen to spy on the Winchesters. However, while God led Sam to the spell, He states that it wasn't all Him: God gave Sam half of the spell and Sam did the rest.

Conjuration

The act of summoning one or more spirits with a predetermined purpose. The conjurer performs some type of ritual to call upon the spirit and often times this include using certain magic symbols drawn on the floor and/or altar. The conjurer will usually perform this at a specific time; Depending on what they are conjuring it could be done at a specific time during the day/night or according to the alignment of the planets. Incense, candles and potions are commonly used coupled with a specific spell to summon a spirit.

Pad of Definitions (2.01 In My Time of Dying), Official Website

Spells are a combination of rituals and incantations used to harness and control magical power. They are used across many cultures and by a variety of practitioners. Witches are amongst the most powerful in developing and using spells. Rowena MacLeod was a very powerful witch, maybe the most powerful of all time [1].

Summoning Spells

Demon

As seen with Trevor and Nora in 5.12 Swap Meat, summoning a demon requires a bowl of unknown herbs, set atop the Sigil of Baphomet, with candles placed on each point of the pentagram. Once the altar is set up, an invocation in Latin must be spoken:

Attenrobendum eos,
ad ligandum eos,
potiter eos,
coram me.

Translation: Command them, bind them, bring them to me.

Once completed, any demon who hears the invocation will manifest in the nearest vessel.

Trevor holding the demon summoning ritual.
The demon summoning ritual.

Azazel

John summoning Azazel.

John Winchester uses a special summoning ritual to make contact with the demon Azazel in 2.01 In My Time of Dying. Some of the required ingredients for the ritual were: blood of the summoner, acacia, oil of Abramelin, six lit candles positioned on the Sigil of Azazel, and a Latin incantation:

Attenrobendum eos,
ad consiendrum,
ad ligandum eos,
potiter et solvendum,
et ad,
congregontum eos,
coram me.

Crowley

Crowley is first summoned with this spell by Bobby in 6.04 Weekend at Bobby's. The ritual requires a special sigil with six candles positioned on it, a bowl that contains unknown ingredients, and the blood of the summoner. The ingredients must then be set aflame with this Latin incantation being recited:

Et ad congregandom, Eos coram me.

Translation: Bring them to me.

Sam and Dean go on to use a slightly different ritual that involves a different circular sigil and only three candles in 7.22 There Will Be Blood and 7.23 Survival of the Fittest, with the latter instance involving Crowley being held captive in a devil's trap by Dick Roman, delaying his arrival until he is set free.

Bobby summoning Crowley.
Sam and Dean summoning Crowley.
Dean summoning Crowley in the Bunker.

Ruby

Sam summons Ruby.

Sam uses a summoning ritual to call upon Ruby in 3.16 No Rest for the Wicked. This ritual bears many similarities with the ritual John used to summon Azazel. However, the Latin incantation Sam uses is slightly different from John's:

Ad construgendum,
ad ligandum eos,
pariter et solvendum.
et ad,
congregantum eos,
coram me.

The sigil Sam draws differs greatly from the one John used, depicting a circle within a single closed triangle, with three additional symbols drawn inside each triangle corner. The placement of the bowl of ingredients also changes; it is placed in the center of the circle. Only three lit candles are used and they are positioned on the tips of the triangle corners.

Samhain

The raising of Samhain from the confines of Hell can only performed every 600 years. The ritual requires two witches to perform three blood sacrifices over three days, with the last one happening before midnight on the final day of the final harvest, which on the Celtic calendar is October 31st -- Halloween. Blood from the final sacrifice must then be collected in a chalice, where one of the witches will recite a Latin incantation at a black altar. Once done, the earth will crack allowing Samhain to take possession of a meatsuit.

Don Harding preparing the altar for the raising of Samhain.
Tracy Davis performing the ritual to raise Samhain.

Crossroads Demon

The standard method of summoning a crossroads demon is fairly simple. The ritual first requires the summoner to bury a box/container in the middle of a crossroads. The contents of the box must include graveyard dirt, a black cat bone, and a photograph of the person wishing to make a deal. Yarrow flowers being planted at the crossroads helps in the ritual, though this appears to not be a necessary component. Sam recites this Latin incantation at a crossroads in 9.16 Blade Runners:

Daemon, esto subiecto voluntati meae.

Sam prepares to summon a crossroads demon.
Robert Johnson standing at the crossroads.

Exorcised Demon

This special demon summoning spell was found by Nora Havelock for Jeffrey after he kidnapped her son. It is very powerful in that it is possible to summon an exorcised demon, no matter how far in the recesses of Hell it is located/imprisoned.

The spell requires a bowl of burning coals placed over a special sigil, then a smaller bowl containing the heart of a dog is placed on top of the coals and the blood of the exorcist is poured over it as a Latin incantation is spoken:

Tae invoco apro fundus inferni,

Speaking the invocation will cause the earth in surrounding vicinity to violently shake, until the demon is able to manifest in a human body.

Text on the demon summoning ritual.

Sam summons Balthazar.

Angel

Castiel summons the archangel Raphael through a simple ritual that must be performed at sunrise. According to Castiel, archangels and their vessels are tied together through what he calls "an open phone line;" one only needs to get the vessel and recite an incantation in Enochian:

Raa gah io es,
Vin nonca aaspt poamal de z

A second, more standard, summoning ritual has been performed by Sam and/or Dean in 6.11 Appointment in Samarra, 6.17 My Heart Will Go On, and 6.21 Let It Bleed - all of which were done to summon Balthazar. This ritual does not require the recitation of an incantation, rather only an Enochian sigil with candles strategically placed around it, and a bowl of unknown ingredients, that once set aflame would cause Balthazar to instantaneously manifest.

Death

Death, having been locked away by God for hundreds of years, is released by Lucifer in 5.10 Abandon All Hope... Lucifer performs the ritual to raise Death in Carthage, Missouri, on William Jasper's Farm, which was the site of the Battle of Hellhole during the Civil War. The ritual required the deaths of all the women and children in the town, who were then buried in a mass grave on the farm. Their deaths were then followed by the sacrifice of the townsmen and the demons possessing them.

When Dean wishes to end his life in 10.23 Brother's Keeper, he performs a summoning ritual much like the one he, Sam, and Bobby used to summon and bind Death in 7.01 Meet the New Boss.

Bobby and Rufus summoning Bobby's Reaper.

Reaper

Dean has an out-of-body experience induced in 6.11 Appointment in Samarra, and summons the reaper Tessa by reciting this incantation:

Messorum evoco qui me tetigit.

While lying in a coma, dying and being pursued by a reaper, Bobby cooks up a plan to buy himself some time to wake up by trapping his reaper in his subconscious. Bobby and Rufus go about collecting the needed materials to summon the reaper, which includes: a crucifix, gold ore, hemlock, mace, and blood, among other unknown ingredients. After painting a trapping sigil on the floor, the ingredients are set on fire as Bobby recites the phrase:

O theristis, kaleo se kai deo.

This summons the reaper to his location and traps it.

Ghosts

Aziel, Castiel, Lamisniel, Rabam. Ehrley, et balam, ego vos conuro, per deum verum, per deum vivum. Cuivos cuiaves eos supermontes et per eum, qui adam, et avum formovit. Et per eum...

The Sailor's brother manifests, causing the Sailor's Ghost to finally confront his brother, and save Bela.

Bobby's summoning ritual.

Upon getting Crowley's human name from a captured crossroads demon, Bobby has Rufus dig up information on Crowley's life as a human. Upon learning Crowley had a son, he decides to summon the ghost of Gavin MacLeod to learn all of Crowley's secrets. The ritual involved placing a signet ring that belonged to Gavin on a mat adorned with various sigils and candles placed at its four corners, within a ring of salt. Bobby then recites a Latin incantation, before throwing a powder into a candle, causing the flame to flare high:

Amate spiritus oscorte tae quadaramos aramos nobiscume quarde ahpule nos chikitara.

Gods

Certain pagan gods can also be summoned through varying rituals.

Summoning the goddess Veritas requires three objects: a cat's skull, grains of paradise seed, and devil's shoestring. Once done, Veritas will cause the summoner to receive the truth from anyone the summoner comes into contact with, until it becomes so unbearable the summoner commits suicide, allowing Veritas to collect her tribute. Once Veritas is summoned, a person in her vicinity will only have to ask aloud for the truth to invoke her, thus becoming unwilling tributes to her in the process.

Ingredients for summoning Veritas.

Sam and Jody Mills summon Chronos.

Chronos, the god of time, can be summoned through a ritual of which the only known element requires the summoner to write the specific time they want to summon Chronos from in their blood and set it aflame with some other ingredients. An incantation must also be recited as the ingredients are lit on fire:

O Krone, parakaloumen se, thespizein hemin hronon ton mellonta.

If done correctly, Chronos should appear before the summoner and tell them their future.

The summoning ritual for Zeus requires but two ingredients: frozen energy from the hand of Zeus, also known as fulgurite, and the bone of a worshiper. An ancient Greek hunter by the name of Drakopoulos was the first to discover how to summon, trap, and kill Zeus, though ultimately he failed at his task.

Sam, Dean, and Lily Sunder perform a summoning ritual for Anubis, the Egyptian Guardian of the Dead. They draw a pentacle sigil designed to summon him; a candle must be lit at each point of the pentagram. Within the pentagram are various Egyptian symbols such as the Eye of Horus and an ankh. Lily slices her hand and allows the blood to drip on the Eye of Horus at the center of the sigil as Sam recites the following incantation:

Ya 'anubis, yda uwzuris.
Astamae 'iilaa suti.
Ya 'anubis, 'ant min yazan alqulbu.
Astamae 'iilaa suti.
Ya 'anubis, dalil almawtaa.
Aleawalim bayn alealamin maftuhatan
wa'amrak 'an tuqadim nafsak fi eini.

After a few moments Anubis will appear in the sigil. To trap Anubis inside of it, the summoning sigil needs to be coated in foinikélaio, better known as palm oil; breaking the seal will allow for his release.

Flying Monkeys

The Wicked Witch of the West uses a summoning ritual to call forth her army of flying monkeys from Oz to Earth once she has gotten ahold of the key to Oz. The ingredients for the spell are unknown, but once they are properly mixed together inside of a cauldron red smoke begins to spill out from it, apparently acting as a beacon to her army of flying monkeys.

Rowena researches how to summon Lucifer.

Lucifer

A special summoning ritual can be found within the Book of the Damned, where Lucifer's essence can be pulled from the Cage without opening it. In 11.09 O Brother Where Art Thou? Rowena, Sam, and Crowley travel to Limbo where Crowley has set up a warded holding area to transfer Lucifer's essence. To perform the summoning ritual requires a mixture of various herbs being ignited and the following Enochian incantation.

Foh roh deh gah lah moh ray
Mah hoh tah
Foh reh say-lah

Weaponized Spells

Demon Killing Spell

While demons are laying siege to the police station in 3.12 Jus in Bello, Ruby reveals that she knows a spell that will vaporize all demons within a one-mile radius, herself included. The only revealed ingredient called for a person of virtue (a virgin) to have their heart cut out of their chest. Due to the protestations of Dean and Victor Henriksen, the spell isn't performed.

Kevin using the demon bomb.

Demon Bomb

The demon bomb is a powerful spell that is inscribed on the demon tablet for the defense of mankind; its effects are deadly to both demon and host. The spell was discovered by Kevin Tran after being kidnapped by Crowley and forced to translate the newly-discovered demon tablet. Three of the known ingredients needed for the demon bomb are West Bank witch hazel, the skull of an Egyptian calf, and the tail of a newt that according to Kevin, may or may not be extinct. Once properly mixed, the spell will release a shock wave, blasting and immolating any demons within its radius, rendering the bodies nothing but scorch marks on a wall.

Due to the rare quality of ingredients, use of this spell is very difficult, as only demons or angels seem to be able to procure the needed materials.

In 13.13 Devil's Bargain, Arthur Ketch, while escaping from the trunk of the Impala, finds a demon bomb in the weapons cache. Believing it may put a "dent" in Lucifer due to his weakened state, he throws the bomb into the motel room where Lucifer is slowly killing the Winchesters and Castiel, but Lucifer escapes before the bomb goes off.

The witch killing spell used against Spencer.

Witch Killing Spell

The first usage of the witch killing spell was in 7.05 Shut Up, Dr. Phil, Bobby supplies Sam and Dean, with a list of ingredients, of which the only known is chicken feet. Sam and Dean attempt to use the spell to put a stop to Don and Maggie Stark; once the Starks are in the same room the contents of the bowl are lit aflame as Sam recites the incantation:

Furor divina virtute in infernum eam detrude.

However due to the chicken feet being rotten, the spell is ineffective against the Starks.

A second variation of the spell was used in 8.15 Man's Best Friend with Benefits. Like the prior spell its exact contents are unknown other than chicken feet, however this version of the spell takes a liquid form. When James Frampton confronts the witch Spencer, and engages him in a fight, Sam and Dean arrive and use the spell like a Molotov cocktail -- Sam lights the bottle while reciting an invocation in Latin:

Ego voco impetu delere,
vos caelum et infernum.

A smoke then envelops Spencer causing his body to disintegrate.

The second variation is attempted again in 10.12 About a Boy to kill Katja, but she uses a spell to send the bottle flying at the wall, shattering it.

Sam later adapts this spell into the witch-killing bullets.

Spontaneous Combustion

This spell is a directed attack, where the target will burn from the inside until only ashes remain. This spell was used by Thule Society member Torvald to kill Rabbi Bass.

Defigere Et Depurgare

Defigere Et Depurgare -- or as it is known in its English translation "To bind and purge" -- is a spell created by Rowena in the 18th century that causes demons to liquefy and get coughed up out of their meatsuit. All that is need to enact the spell is for a demon to possess a hex bag with the ingredients in it. It appears that the spell binds the demon to its meatsuit to keep it from escaping as it begins to liquefy the smoke into a sludge-like substance and be purged from the host body. The spell was only practiced by Rowena and before she used it to kill Raul, wasn't seen since the 18th century.

Crowley is the only known demon to have been able to survive and break free of the spell.

Impetus Bestiarum

Impetus bestiarum (attacks of beasts), or as Rowena referred to it, "attack dog spell", is a spell wherein the witch places a hex bag in the hands of someone and recites "impetus bestiarum" turning the object of the spell into an animalistic killer who can be directed to kill a particular individual. The spell will eventually kill the person it is cast on.

To reverse the spell, the witch must chant the Latin words "Desiste. Ad levo onus tuum." Rowena used this in 11.03 The Bad Seed to reverse the attack dog spell she cast on Cas.

In 13.12 Various & Sundry Villains, Rowena casts this spell on fellow witches Jennie and Jamie Plum and simply orders them to "end it." In response, the two turn on and kill each other.

Rowena attempting a spell on Dean Winchester.

Gaelic Spell

Rowena performs a Gaelic spell in an attempt to kill Dean Winchester. To perform the spell, Rowena first painted various Gaelic sigils on her body (possibly with blood), and when she was prepared to attack recited this Gaelic incantation:

A spioradí an tsaoil, éistigí liom!
Dóighigí an fear seo!
Dóighigí go luaithreach é!

This caused a blinding light to emit from the sigils painted on her body; the spell was ineffective, however, since Dean bore the Mark of Cain at the time of casting.

Angel Debilitating Spell

Metatron performs this spell by writing various sigils along books on a shelf in his blood, and upon activating the blood magic caused Castiel to collapse in pain. However, once Castiel was able to consume the remnants of his original grace, the spell no longer had an effect on him.

Metatron writes out the spell.

Auditory Attack Spell

This spell, performed by Catriona Loughlin on Sam Winchester in 12.11 Regarding Dean, simply requires a witch to recite this Latin incantation:

Age nunc intellectum.
Age nunc intellectum atque voluntatem omnem meam.

Doing so will cause the victim to be beset with a piercing high-pitched ringing that will paralyze them and cause blood to flow from the ears before rendering them unconscious.

Suffocetur

Suffocetur is a Latin spell used by Donatello Redfield in 13.14 Good Intentions against Dean Winchester. After being restrained by Sam for attacking him, Donatello recites the word suffocetur to Dean, causing the air to leave his lungs, temporarily suffocating him.

Mors Lumine

Binding Spells

The binding spell for Death.

Death

Death has been bound thrice during the course of the series: by Lucifer, by the Winchesters and Bobby Singer working together, and then by Dean alone. The method by which Lucifer was able to bind Death is unknown, but it is assumed it was the same spell Sam, Dean, and Bobby used. According to Crowley, binding Death requires a tremendous amount of power, and he thus found the idea delusional. However, he reluctantly agrees to hand over the spell to the Sam, Dean, and Bobby.

The ritual itself requires various common and easy-to-find materials such as angelica root and human blood, as well as "an act of God crystallized forever" (fulgurite). Although part of the page is covered by Crowley's sticky note, the writing detailing the ingredients on the page is as follows:

Juvorago-
Fulgurite:-
Puputus: d-
Pila, lodo-
Pilutosa
Angelica
Archange
Crudus
In herbs
Cruor ex
A humanus
Animus.
Questuro
Vitualamen
Quoduarro
Peto illa
Lacuna.

The ingredients must be mixed with blood in a bowl which has been placed atop a special summoning sigil. An invocation in Latin must then be recited:

Te nunc invoco mortem,
te in mea potestate defixi,
nunc et in aeternum!

Once done, Death will materialize and be bound to the will of the summoner(s).

The summoning altar for Death.
Death bound.

Reapers

Binding a reaper requires tapping into very dark and powerful magic. To bind a reaper, you must first build a black altar, which must be adorned with bones, human blood, and a Coptic cross. Getting the reaper to do the summoner's bidding (i.e. kill) also requires a photo to be placed on the altar of the intended victim with their face crossed out and for the summoner to recite a Latin incantation while holding a Coptic cross filled with blood. If the altar and cross are destroyed the reaper will be released from his binding.

Ghosts

In 2.18 Hollywood Babylon, Walter Dixon uses old Enochian summoning rituals to summon ghosts on the set of Hell Hazers II: The Reckoning, and through the use of a talisman he is able to control the spirits, forcing them to kill for him. However, once the talisman was destroyed the ghosts quickly turned on Walter and brutally killed him, as they did not like being used to kill.

Fairies

This unknown spell was used by Gerry to bind the fairy Gilda to his will. The exact ritual is unknown, other than it came from a book of spells that Gerry was able to purchase on eBay. Under this spell Gilda was unable to break free or harm her "master" Gerry.; the only way to break the spell is to destroy or damage the book of spells it is located in.

Dorothy Baum

Dorothy uses a binding spell that connects her soul to the Wicked Witch of the West, allowing her trap herself and the witch in a bottle.

Dean and Castiel complete the ritual.

The Mark

Once the ingredients have been mixed, an Enochian incantation must be recited:

Zee-loh-dah-rup, ah-lahr, zee-zohp, ah-buh-rah-muh-jzh, ahm-ee-zuh-pee

Once the final ingredients are added, smoke will manifest from the spell bowl and be absorbed into an orb which must then be smashed in front of God.

Portals

Alternate Universe Spell

In 6.15 The French Mistake, Balthazar uses a spell to temporarily send Sam and Dean into an alternate dimension as a means of distracting Raphael and allowing him to move his cache of Heavenly weapons to Castiel. In this spell, Balthazar uses Dead Sea brine, lamb's blood, and the bones of a lesser saint; the ingredients are mixed together in a bowl and used to paint a sigil on a window. To travel to another universe, the participants must jump through the window, which transports them to their destination.

The sigil glows, signaling the arrival of the angel Virgil.
The dragons open a door to Purgatory.

Opening Purgatory

There appears to be three rituals to open the door to Purgatory. The first was performed by H.P. Lovecraft on March 10, 1937 at a dinner party. The specific ritual is unknown.

The second ritual was performed by dragons as means to bring Eve, the Mother of All Monsters, to Earth. This ritual came from an ancient manuscript; it required a virgin sacrifice to serve as an Earthly vessel for Eve, the blood of the summoner, and an incantation in Latin:

Ego coniuro vos,
insolubiliter ad mei potenciam aligati,
Ad me... sine prestolacione venire,
Debeatis aperiat,
Huc sine mora debeas mater!

Once the first line of the incantation is spoken, a doorway to Purgatory will open, at which point the blood of the summoner must be bled into it and the virgin sacrifice thrown into the portal.

Castiel stands at the door to Purgatory.

The third ritual was acquired by Castiel and Crowley through the torture of Eleanor Visyak. This ritual requires a special sigil painted in the blood of a virgin, and a native of Purgatory. The final part of the ritual requires a Latin incantation to be recited on the night of a lunar eclipse:

Ianua Magna Purgatorii
Clausa Est Ob Nos
Lumine Eius Ab Oculis
Nostris Retento

Sed Nunc Stamus Ad Limen Huius
Ianuae Magnae Et Demisse
Fideliter Perhonorifice
Paramus Aperire Eam

Creaturae Terrificae Quarum Ungulae
Et Dentes Nunquam Tetigerunt
Carnem Humanam Aperit Fauces
Eius Ad Mundum Nostrum Nunc
Ianua Magna
Aperta Tandem!

Crowley performs the first part of the rift sealing ritual.

Rift Sealing Spell

Rift Opening Spell

With the aid of the angel tablet, the Kevin Tran of Apocalypse World is able to devise a spell to open a new rift between the worlds. The key ingredient is archangel grace. After mixing the various ingredients in a bowl, the archangel grace is poured over it while an Enochian incantation is recited:

Mah ray, fay doh, em lah.
Kah day, em lah! Kah day, em lah!

Sam performs the spell to Apocalypse World.

Insanidox Koth Munto, Yokoth! or
Insanidox Koth Munto, Glythur!

When opening a rift to Apocalypse World, Sam recites the incantation:

Koth Munto Notox

Unlike the spell used by Kevin Tran in Apocalypse World, rifts created with these ingredients will remain open for 24 hours. The rift can also be closed by using the Seal of Solomon and reciting:

Panto Koth Munto!

When the rift opens, according to Ophelia, you can never be sure of where it will end up. The first time the spell was used by the Winchesters, it opened in an unknown snowy forest on Apocalypse World. The second time, the rift opened on a hill in Northeastern Kentucky.

Koth Munto Nontox

By reciting the same incantation and placing her hand upon the Black Grimoire, apparently drawing power from the spellbook itself, Rowena was able to channel more power into the rift, keeping it open for a few minutes longer.

In 14.09 The Spear, Dark Kaia explains that she was able to use a spell from her own world to open a rift to the Winchesters' world. However, this magic doesn't work in their world, so Dark Kaia can't use the same spell to go back home.

The Empty

Using another spell, Nick is able to open a portal to the Empty. The spell requires the blood of one of Lucifer's vessels, Nick's blood, and the blood of someone from Lucifer's bloodline, Jack's blood. The spell caster must encircle themselves in a ring of salt. After burning the blood, the following words must be recited.

Qui dormiunt, ad dominum formosum. Nexus noster restitutus est.
Surgas ex abysso, in lumine exsistas.

Afterwards, the portal to the Empty opens and Lucifer emerges. However, casting the spell alerts Jack of Nick's location. Upon arrival, Jack is able to send Lucifer back to the Empty and close the portal.

The purple flame must be continuously fed.

Hell

Needing entry into Hell, Sam, Dean, and Castiel use one of Rowena's spells. The ingredients needed for the spell are unknown, beyond the blood of one of the people being transported. In addition, one of the other ingredients appears to be a blood of an unknown origin. When all the ingredients are mixed together in a bowl, whoever intends to go to Hell must place their hands on the bowl and a Latin incantation must be recited before setting the contents aflame.

Initium ad inferna permittatur

The participants are then transported to Hell in a flash of light. A purple flame will burn in the bowl, and must be continually fed, for if it is extinguished, those that traveled to Hell will be trapped there. It is unclear how exactly they are transported, but Castiel tells Jack that if the fire goes out the rift will be closed, suggesting that it may open an invisible portal of some sort.

It is unclear how the participants initiate the journey back but they are shown to reappear in a burst of purple flames, similar to the flame in the spell bowl. Once they return, the fire in the bowl is immediately extinguished.

Other Spells

Terrakinesis Spell

Meg (possessing Sam) uses this spell when she is trapped in a devil's trap to cause a break in it in 2.14 Born Under a Bad Sign. The spell requires a simple recitation of Latin.

Spiritus in mundus un glorum suarum umitite palatum iram domine...

Bobby performing a tracking spell to locate Lilith.

Tracking Spells

Tracking spells are used to locate the whereabouts of a specific target. The first instance of a tracking spell being used on Supernatural came from Bobby Singer.

Ruby uses a location spell in 4.16 On the Head of a Pin when Sam asks her to track down where the angels have taken Dean to torture Alastair. For the spell, Ruby simply recites a Latin incantation, and sets a map on fire. The flames incinerate the entire page, leaving only Dean's location uncharred.

Castiel uses a location spell in 5.13 The Song Remains the Same in order to track the angel Anna's whereabouts. The spell requires unspecified herbs mixed in a bowl that is set atop a sigil. Oil is then poured into the bowl and an Enochian incantation is recited:

Zod ah ma ra la ee est la gi ro sa.

Once done a red flame bursts from the bowl, and Castiel is able to ascertain Anna's location.

Mark of Cain Location Spell

Ingredients for the location spell.
Dean, Tara, and Crowley perform the location spell.

Angelic Tracking Spell

While trying to locate the angel Gadreel, Castiel finds notes in the Men of Letters library by James Haggerty titled "On the Inner Workings of Angels." In the notes, it is learned that angels leave a small amount of grace in their vessels upon leaving them. It is theorized that if the grace can be extracted, it can be used in a tracking spell to find the angel. To extract the grace, a needle must be stuck in the former vessel; the extraction process is very painful, and nearly kills Sam before Castiel puts a stop to it and heals him, destroying what grace remained in Sam's body.

To perform the spell, the grace must be mixed in a bowl with other unknown ingredients, however the amount extracted from Sam was not enough to use in the spell.

Body Swapping Spell

The body swapping spell was used by Gary in 5.12 Swap Meat. When Gary, Trevor, and Nora were messing around with dark forces they learn of the bounty that Hell has put on Dean Winchester's head, and when Gary spots Sam and Dean, he comes up with the idea of using a body swapping spell as means to get close to Dean and kill him for the bounty. The details of the spell are not revealed in the episode.

Death Transference Spell

A death transference spell was used by Charlie in 4.12 Criss Angel Is a Douchebag. The spell required the placement of a hexed tarot card on the intended victim. Any harm that would come to Vernon as he performed dangerous/deadly escape tricks would instead be wrought on the person in possession of the tarot card.

The 66 Seals

De-aging Spell

The witch Patrick recites a Gaelic incantation over poker chips which causes them to become set aflame. Once done, when a person bets with the chips, they will lose or gain years to their life. Patrick later indicates that the spell itself is mostly theater and the real magic lies in Patrick himself.

Lannraich gu dealrach a-nis.
Las suas agus cuir ás an teine.
Mar sin bitheadh.

Reversal Spell

Lia gives Bobby and Dean a reversal spell which if done right will reverse all of Patrick's magic, and revert everyone still living back to the their rightful ages. The only revealed ingredients for the spell include the jawbone of a murderer and DNA of the witch. The ingredients must be placed in a bowl and set aflame while a Gaelic incantation is recited.

Airmidh mi air maponus, dia— na hogalachd. Gairmidh mi air sucellus, dia na time.
Till an-dràsda obair uile gu bheilair a bhith deànta. Mar sin bitheadh.

However the spell did not work in 5.07 The Curious Case of Dean Winchester, as the tooth pick they procured from Patrick never crossed his lips.

Soul Absorption Spell

The soul absorption spell is a ritual in which a living human can absorb another person's soul into their body. The ritual requires both parties to cut their arms and hold the wounds against each other as the living person recites this Latin phrase:

Conjuncti sumus, unum sumus.

Once done, the soul will be sucked into the arm of the living human.

Benny's soul being absorbed into Dean's arm.
Bobby's soul being absorbed into Sam's arm.

Restoration Ritual

The restoration ritual is used by Dean in order to resurrect the vampire Benny Lafitte, after escaping from Purgatory. Once on Earth, Dean carries Benny's soul in his arm until he locates Benny's grave. Once Benny's remains have been dug up, the ritual is performed wherein Dean releases Benny's soul by slicing his arm and letting the soul "bleed" onto the corpse while reciting this Latin incantation:

Anima corpori. Fuerit corpus totem resurgent

Once done, the resurrection is instantaneous.

Dean releasing Benny's soul.
Benny's remains.

The demon Jason performs a similar ritual in 9.02 Devil May Care. He places the charred corpse of Josie Sands in a bathtub in a room adorned with blood drawn sigils, then bleeds onto the corpse which causes the bathtub to emit an intense white light. At this point Abaddon retakes possession of the body.

The restoration ritual is initiated.

Ascension Ritual

The ascension ritual is a ritual that allows a soul which was retrieved from Hell or Purgatory to ascend to Heaven. This was used by Sam to allow Bobby's soul to go to Heaven and thus complete the second trial. Sam had to slice his arm while chanting the following incantation:

Solvo haec phantasmata interram et inde ad Olympum.

Bobby's soul being released unto Heaven.

Cloaking Spell

A cloaking spell was used by Commandant Eckhart in 1944 in Vitsyebsk, Belarus, during an attack by a Golem sent by the Judah Initiative. The spell requires a mixture of blood and unknown herbs, with the caster reciting a Latin incantation while holding a black candle and dripping its candle wax into the bowl. The translated Latin from the episode:

Cloaking flame, I ignite you.
The fire born from blood leaves behind no man.
Now vanish me into the night.
O fire of power and concealment.

The final part of the spell requires the caster to set the bowl aflame, which causes the person to vanish as flames consume the area.

Angel Expulsion Spell

The angel expulsion spell is a spell performed by Metatron to expel all the angels from Heaven. Metatron tricks Castiel into helping him gather the needed ingredients under the ruse of performing the trials from the angel tablet and locking Heaven down to try and bring peace to all the warring factions. The spell was so well hidden within the angel tablet that not even the prophet Kevin Tran was able to decipher it without translating it into a proto-Elamite cuneiform, which required Crowley's assistance in translating.

The spell requires three specific ingredients that are tied to angels. The first ingredient is to kill and remove the heart of a Nephilim. The second ingredient requires the bow of a Cupid, which the cherub Gail gives up to Dean and Castiel without incident. The third and final ingredient is an angel's grace. According to Crowley's translation of the proto-Elamite cuneiform, the next phase requires Metatron to "mix until the smoke shall rise from the ashes casting the angels from Heaven," and that the spell is irreversible. Completion of the spell quickly causes all the angels to be ejected from Heaven, including the imprisoned ones. Many angels are killed in the fall, and the others are left injured and weakened. The gates of Heaven are eventually reopened in 14.08 Byzantium when the Cosmic Entity invades the realm.

Inuit Spell

This spell is found by Kevin Tran in the Men of Letters archive. It allows a human to link minds with any animal, allowing communication between the two species. The exact contents of the spell are unknown, other than a strand of fur from the animal the human wishes to link with. Once drunk an incantation is spoken:

Deila hér me. Dag eru nou rar vitur orum.

Enacting the spell comes with the side effect of the human exhibiting various characteristics of the animal it has linked minds with. The spell eventually wears off on its own after about a day.

Cuthbert Sinclair

Cuthbert Sinclair, or Magnus, was named Master of Spells soon after his initiation into the Men of Letters. He was expelled from the organization in 1956. 57 years later Sam and Dean are able to track him to an invisible fortress in the middle of nowhere. He uses a variety of spells on both the Winchesters during their encounter. One spell involves teleporitng Sam out of the mansion by throwing an unknown powder at him while reciting the words:

Abi, ab oculis meis!

A witch in 11.03 The Bad Seed appears to attempt to use this same spell on Dean, minus the powder, after realizing that he is a hunter.

Cuthbert goes on to use a Chinese spell that causes Dean's machete to heat up in his hand, once again using an unknown powder and reciting the words:

Shen ti R áN Shao!

Magnus also employs a type of mind control that he uses on his collection of monsters in his "zoo" to do his bidding; the spell causes all will and thought to be drained from the individual. He also uses this spell on Dean in order to get him to take hold of the First Blade:

Mentem tuam ac voluntatem adsumo.

Famulatus

Famulatus (Servitude) is a servitude spell, first seen in 10.07 Girls, Girls, Girls. To enact it one must place a hex bag with unknown ingredients in the palm of the intended servant's hand, and say "famulatus." The person will then become a servant to whomever placed the spell on them.

Wings of Titania

Rowena uses this spell as a means to spy on her son Crowley's meeting with the Winchesters. The spell uses an unknown mixture of ingredients placed in a bowl, and requires a structure made of small bones to be erected in the bowl, draped in an object belonging to the person who is to be located/spied on. Once set up, an invocation must be spoken:

Wings of Titania, bear mine eyes aloft as I bid thee.

Once done, the spell caster will appear to have an out of body experience, taking them to their intended target.

The Rune of Amaranth is an illusion spell first cultivated in the 18th century. The Winchesters and Castiel plan to use a young boy, Austin, as bait to lure and trap Cain. Crowley arrives with the First Blade, but refuses to give it to Dean until Cain is trapped, which leads him to perform the Rune of Amaranth spell to make sure Cain isn't able to kill Austin until he is put in a devil's trap.

The Rune of Amaranth
Cain destroys the illusion.

Repelling Spell

A simple spell used by Rowena when her son Crowley has angered her. As she is storming out of his throne room, she simply says the word "Abite" (get or go away), and throws her hands to the side, which causes the destruction of any objects in her periphery.

In 12.03 The Foundry, Rowena uses this spell to banish Lucifer to the bottom of the ocean.

In 15.06 Golden Time, the Witch Mother uses a variation of this spell, "Ubra, Abi," to temporarily banish the ghost of Eileen Leahy.

Cabirian Invocation

In order for Sam to bypass the Werther Box's security measure, he seeks advice from Rowena in how to break the enchantment spell. Rowena suggests the Cabirian invocation -- an all-purpose disenchantment, with easy-to-obtain ingredients. According to Rowena, the spell is not recommended for amateurs, as it has a tendency to fizzle out. The spell requires an unspecified flower to be mixed with unspecified powders in a bowl and set aflame, with this Romanian incantation spoken over it:

Purificare la magia.

Due to the flame burning out before Sam could recite the Latin, the Cabirian invocation is ineffective in counteracting the Werther Box's defense mechanism.

The Mark of Cain is removed from Dean's arm.

Removing the Mark of Cain

The Mark of Cain is the first curse; to remove it from everyone who bears it at once would mean releasing the Darkness, for which the Mark was created to keep locked away. The spell can only be done by a witch that can understand old, dark magic from the time of creation. To remove the Mark, the spell requires four ingredients: Something made by God, but forbidden to man (the forbidden fruit); something made by man, but forbidden by God (the golden calf); genetic material from the person who bears the Mark (Dean's hair); and finally, the witch performing the spell must kill someone they love and sacrifice their blood.

Mix the ingredients and recite the following Latin incantation:

Ab manu dei. Ab manu hominis.

Ab cruore cordis Mei adfusuro in aeternum.

Tolle maledictionem tuam ab hoc viro.

If done correctly a bolt of red lightning will strike the arm of the holder of the Mark of Cain and remove it.

Paralyzing Spell

Rowena places this spell on Crowley in 10.23 Brother's Keeper. After being freed by the blast wave from the Mark of Cain cure, Rowena simply says "Manete" (Latin for "remain") to Crowley, freezing his meatsuit where it stands. The spell is lifted by another witch hours later. The spell appears to have an effect on Crowley's powers in 11.01 Out of the Darkness, Into the Fire as he is unable to perform any of his usual feats even in another body until the spell is broken.

In 12.02 Mamma Mia, Rowena once again uses her paralyzing spell on Lucifer, which only temporarily immobilizes the archangel before he is able to regain control.

In 13.12 Various & Sundry Villains, Rowena uses the spell on Sam and Dean. They break the spell when they are able to burn the hex bag Rowena used with the spell.

Spell of Gathering

The spell of gathering is an incantation used to "focus the power of celestial beings against all drawn forms of evasion." The spell was designed by the Men of Letters to clear all forms of mystical or occult blockages. The spell was considered purely theoretical and was never able to be used, as it required tapping into the power of an archangel. The ingredients to the spell appear to require the bones of a small creature, a dried lizard, some type of root, and a brain.

Healing Spell

In 11.18 Hell's Angel Rowena uses a spell on Amara to help heal her of her injuries after surviving the angel smiting. Rowena lays her hands over Amara and recites the incantation:

Mahday, eelohtah sahn. Serloh, eelohtah.

Resurrection Charm

I, long ago, secreted within my person a wee casket of powerful magic. When the spell inside me sensed my life-force ebbing... it went to work. And I was revived.

Arthur Ketch also learned of Rowena's resurrection charm from a time when the Men of Letters captured and tortured her. He struck a deal with Rowena, sewing the charm into his body in exchange for letting her escape.

In 14.18 Absence, Rowena tells Jack Kline that this spell only works as a failsafe and cannot be used to resurrect someone who has died without the spell implanted within them.

As Rowena prepares to sacrifice herself in 15.03 The Rupture, she cuts her last resurrection charm out of her shoulder.

Diminishing Spell

In 11.22 We Happy Few , Rowena allies herself with four other witches and attacks Amara with this spell in an effort to weaken her.

Attenuare!

Chinese Mind Control Spell

Backed into a corner when the Winchesters free themselves, Lady Antonia Bevell uses a Chinese mind control technique to subdue Mary Winchester. The spell requires the performer to make an open wound in their hand and recite the phrase "Xi." Doing so will immobilize and begin to suffocate the intended victim. The spell can be broken by simply knocking the performer unconscious.

Rowena activates the glyph.

Festina

With Lucifer's vessel deteriorating, Rowena is forced to perform a spell to make Vince Vincente's body more durable and stronger. Rowena draws a druidic glyph with Hawthorne tree ash on Lucifer's chest, telling him the spell is of her own creation and a mix of Book of the Damned magic and traditional Celtic. Rowena walks around with incense before placing her hand on his chest, and reciting the Latin phrase:

Festina

This hastens the deterioration of the vessel rather than strengthening it.

Dearmad

Gideon Loughlin activates the glyph for the dearmad spell.

Soul Swapping Spell

Resurrection spell in the Black Grimoire.

Colt Bullets

In order to create working bullets for the Colt in 12.14 The Raid, Sam gives Mick Davies the recipe he learned from Bobby Singer. To create working bullets for the Colt, silver bullets must be mixed in a tincture of holy oil, sage, and myrrh. Once mixed, a Latin incantation must be spoken over the bullets:

Signum est imitandum,
Signum est imitandum

Blood Purification Ritual

A simple purification ritual used by Sam to purify his, Dean's, and Lady Antonia Bevell's blood in 12.22 Who We Are to "re-virginize" their blood, in order to use the Abrogation ritual, which requires virgin blood. The ritual itself is simple -- a Latin incantation is spoken as blood is spilled into a bowl of various ingredients.

Abrogation Ritual

Also called "the Devla" by Sam, this is a ritual spell that turns back complex mechanical processes and resets equipment and machinery, originally used by the Romani people as an act of rebellion against their forced assimilation in Europe.

The spell requires simple basic ingredients as well as the blood of a virgin; when mixed together the caster will sprinkle an unknown ingredient while reciting the incantation:

Farmichi, farmichi, mashuna parra, mashuna parra

Nephilim Tracking Spell

The Nephilim tracking spell is a Caananite spell that dates back to the time of King Solomon, who used it to keep tabs on the Queen of Sheba, who was a Nephilim.

Sanguis Infernus

Sanguis infernus (Hell blood) is a spell that was devised by the demon known as Grab. The spell causes any human that has been to Hell and back to act as a dowsing rod to locate Luther Shrike's specially warded vault. The spell simply requires a Latin invocation.

Sanguis infernus, anima nunc.
Viam manifesta.
Sanguis inferne, viam ostende.

According to Grab, the spell works on the principle that "like attracts like" and it causes the person's arm to pull them in the direction of the vault. Once nearby, the spell automatically breaks and the person regains full control of their arm.

Aegrota amore

Aegrota amore (Sick love) is a love spell used by the Plum sisters on Dean Winchester in 13.12 Various & Sundry Villains. The spell is simple, only requiring planting a hex bag on an unsuspecting victim and reciting the Latin phrase, aegrota amore, which will cause the person's eyes to flash pink as they fall instantaneously in love and become willing to do anything for the witch who performed the spell.

Binding Release Spell

Rowena releasing herself from her bindings.

Ego sum filia naturae.
Cum osculatione lunae.
Da mihi vocem liberatam.
Remitte vim meam.
Fiam invincta.
Ego sum filia naturae.
Cum osculatione lunae.
Da mihi vocem liberatam.
Remitte vim meam.
Fiam invincta!

A cut must then be made down the neck of the individual, releasing the spell work and revealing the binding magic, which will then begin to break, freeing the person of the magic.

Reversal Spell

This reversal spell was found in the White Magic Lexicon and used in an attempt to reverse the aging hex that was placed on a young girl, Lora, by a witch. The spell required sage, pyrite, and sheep’s eye, as well as reciting the Latin invocation thrice:

Cantamen solvatur; cantamen revertatur. (Undo the spell; reverse the spell)

However, due to the curse being connected to witch's pendant, the reversal spell only helped to exacerbate the hex, causing Lora to age faster and eventually die.

Examination Spell

Rowena is called in by Sam to help understand what is wrong with Jack. She recites a Latin invocation over Jack's body, repeating the phrase:

Possim rei huius cognoscere causas. (Tell me the cause of this)

Which allows Rowena to learn that Jack's Nephilim nature as a half-human, half-angel is unable to sustain his body without his grace.

This spell is possibly from the Book of the Damned which was open next to Jack's bedside when Rowena performed it.

Recharging Spell

Castiel is given a vial of Gabriel's grace by the shaman Sergei, as well as a spell, to use as a recharging agent in an attempt to shock Jack out of his deterioration. As Jack consumes the grace, Rowena recites the spell precisely:

Potione hac, restitutus Eris. Omnia erunt sicut erant! (When you drink this, you will be restored and things will be as they were)

Jack's eyes glow golden, and he appears to be in good health once again. Unfortunately, the effects are only temporary and Jack soon collapses in a coughing fit. Sergei later tells Castiel that the spell was only an experiment and he didn't actually know if it would work or not.

Magice Necromantiorum

A resurrection spell from the Book of the Damned created by Agnes to resurrect her friends who starved to death while in prison. It requires great power, relatively common ingredients, and the body of the deceased. Following the accidental death of Mary Winchester, Jack Kline attempted to use this spell to resurrect her. However, he lacked Mary's body and the spell failed, only succeeding in bringing back the body. Sam later states that Rowena believed the spell only brought back a shell, incapable of holding life.

Id quod mortuum, nunc oriatur.
Hoc quod cecidit, nunc revertatur.
Id quod mortuum, nunc oriatur.
Hoc quod cecidit, nunc revertatur.
Hoc quod cecidit, nunc revertatur.
Orimini. Orimini. Orimini. Orimini! Orimini!

Jack performs the spell.
A vortex appears above Jack.

Soul Expulsion Spell

A spell which can expel souls from bodies they are possessing. Belphegor was able to cast it using only graveyard dirt and angel blood which he held in his hands and then slapped together. The spell instantly blasted all of the nearby Hell Ghosts out of the corpses they were using. The spell appears to have no incantation.

Soul Barrier

Acting much like a mile-wide salt circle, the containment spell performed by Belphegor only requires two ingredients: a mound of salt and a human heart (the fresher, the better). After placing the heart on top of the salt, a Latin incantation is recited:

Animi... infernorum... spiritus abyssi surrecti... defigo... vos intra confinia. Vinciamni!

Rafforza l'incantesimo

Rafforza l'incantesimo is a potent transubstantiation spell that Rowena tries to use to strengthen the barrier Belphegor had constructed to contain the Hell Ghosts. She says it can "turn gossamer into concrete."

Prendi cio che è debole, rendilo forte.
D'una piuma d'oca, fai una spada.
D'una piuma d'oca, fai una spada.
D'una piuma d'oca, fai una spada.
Dalla nebbia, cemento...
Dalla nebbia, cemento possente,
impenetrabile, inflessibile.
Rendilo forte!

It fails to work as there are too many ghosts with too much angry energy and the barrier itself has grown too weak.

Sanetur Acre Vulnus

A healing spell created by Rowena, it is capable of healing the Rupture created by God. The ingredients are relatively simple: lavender, myrrh, and an owl skull. However, it requires two people to perform the spell itself and a third to toss the hex bag into the wound.

Mundus fractus est.
Sanetur acre vulnus.
Adveniant harena atque.
saxum, sursum, et deorsum.
Claudatur porta inter orbes terrarum...
...nobis et illis.

After the spell is performed by Rowena, Sam, and Dean, the Rupture slowly closes over before eventually sealing.

Death Is an Infinite Vessel

Rowena studies the "Death Is an Infinite Vessel" spell

A spell from the Book of the Damned to contain souls within the caster's body for a time. The spell is powerful enough to hold even the vast multitudes of souls and demons in Hell and is simple, requiring only two ingredients. However, the first ingredient is the still-coursing blood of the caster, while the other is their final breath. The effect of the spell is that once the caster is mortally wounded, they can draw all nearby souls and demons into themselves, where they will be contained. The spell is sealed by the caster's death. The souls will remain trapped in the corpse until it breaks down and releases them.

Unlocking spell

When Jacinda goes to Rowena's Apartment she whispers "Aperiatur" into the lock to open the doors.

Resurrection Spell

When Sam and the ghost of Eileen Leahy go to Rowena's apartment in 15.06 Golden Time, they find a hidden room containing all her ingredients and books for her magic. She also kept journals, and one of them outlines a spell she was working on after Mary died. The spell aimed to resurrect someone when there was no body. The Witch Mother makes it clear that the resurrection spell can only be used once, telling Sam that once Death sees a loop hole, "she closes it."

At the Bunker, Sam uses the spell to bring Eileen back. It involves ingredients being placed in a bath and an incantation:

Mortuum oritur.
Rutum revertitur
Ex spiritu incarnatum est.
Oriatur et educatur.
Oriatur et educatur.

Dead rise.
Quickly return
The spirit incarnate.
Rises and withdrawn.
Rises and withdrawn.

Eileen's ghost enters the bath, submerges her spirit in the water, and after the incantation she is reborn naked, again human, from the bath.

God later reveals that He orchestrated Eileen's resurrection so that He could use Eileen to spy on the Winchesters. However, while God led Sam to the spell, He states that it wasn't all Him: God gave Sam half of the spell and Sam did the rest.
