T-shirt Campaigns

A love of supporting charitable causes and Supernatural t-shirts are long-standing in the Supernatural fandom. So bringing them together was an obvious match. Starting in late 2014, Misha Collins sold two fan-designed shirts to raise money for Random Acts. Osric Chau, Mark Sheppard, Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and other cast members followed suit over the next couple of months and continue to do so throughout the show's run.

In November 2015, Creation Entertainment set up Creation Stands, which partnered fan-designed shirts and art with actors to raise money for charities. In July 2017, the owner of Creation Stands announced on twitter that they would be ending their business relationship with Creation Entertainment, and the company was re-branded as simply "Stands" while continuing to partner actors and charities with campaign merchandise.

There are other official t-shirts sold under the brand "Join the Hunt" that are associated with actors from show, however this entry only documents those associated with charitable fundraising, most often done through Stands or Represent. This entry also does not document campaigns of non t-shirt items that have been sold through a partnership between SPN actors and their charities, such as posters or dog tags, unless a t-shirt was also being sold within the same campaign.

Sam tweeted with the release of this campaign, "Today we #RISE!! I hope you’ll join me in supporting the Chicago Foundation for Women, who know that when you invest in women and girls, you invest in a society that works for everyone." In the days leading up to the campaign, she tweeted fire emojis and quipped, "I'm totally BURNING to share this with you...!" alluding to the theme of the phoenix pictured, and her character Mary Winchester's infamous history.

As with previous campaigns, Shirts tweeted information about a fan-to-fan donation program in which fans could purchase shirts or caps for others who couldn't afford them, or receive a donated item.

During the campaign, Misha posted multiple videos to his twitter explaining the personal nature of the charity and the shirt's slogan. Shirts tweeted multiple campaign photos of Misha wearing the items, and on the last day of the extension of the campaign (after fans on twitter questioned why she hadn't promoted this campaign after Misha had promoted every Wayward one), Kim Rhodes showed off her shirt. Various contests were held throughout the campaign, including (separate) prizes of an item from the campaign, a year's worth of campaign t-shirts from Stands, a customized, autographed Misha Pop figure, a phone call from Misha, and two Gold-level passes to a Creation Entertainment convention in Indianapolis, including a photo-op with Misha, travel and hotel accommodations. Shirts and Misha also joked in tweets that Misha would, "try on (and/or sniff and/or gently cry on)" into each shirt. ...At least, we hope it's a joke.

As the campaign came to an end, Shirts emphasized the success of this campaign, both in the number of items exchanged through the donation program as well as the total sales. In addition to a strong start and consistent sales throughout, more than 2,500 items were purchased in just the final 24 hours of the campaign.

Through the fundraiser, fans helped to raised a total of $100K to support homeless families.

Mark Pellegrino's "Only Love" Collection

Markonlylove.jpg
Onlylovehoodie.jpg

Charity: Stomp Out Bullying
On Sale: December 2017 T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, long sleeve tees, 3/4 raglans, and tank tops
Number sold: 2,049

Mark Pellegrino announced this campaign on his twitter by stating, "Just hangin’ at the airport in my cool new shirt. Help me Stomp Out Bullying. 100% goes to the cause. http://represent.com/onlylove #Onlylove 😈" The hashtag referenced in the shirt remains controversial in the SPN fandom. It first saw use on twitter in defense of Jared Padalecki after a twitter call-out post which he later deleted. Some fans felt Jared went too far with this tweet while others, including Mark P and actor William Shatner, defended Jared's right to post call-out tweets. Tensions between fans, Pellegrino, and Shatner continued to escalate, culminating from a tweet from each of them calling out a fan to other SPN actors.

When this campaign released less than two months later with a focus on anti-bullying and the hashtag that had been used during a twitter war, fans once again were split between supporting Mark P and criticizing him. The flames were once again ignited on both sides during the campaign when Jared tweeted his support.

"Indivisible" (Pan-Fandom)

100% of profits will go to Random Acts to help the Por Los Nuestros Fund Orders begin shipping the second week of November T-shirts 100% cotton / Machine Wash / Imported"

Shirts announced this campaign on twitter after a hurricane devastated Puerto Rico the previous month. While the campaign was run as a partnership by actors across fandoms, it was notably supported by Supernatural's Rachel Miner (who modeled the shirt on twitter), Gil McKinney (also shown on twitter) Osric Chau (twitter picture), Alaina Huffman and Misha Collins. As with previous campaigns, Shirts also announced that donations/exchanges of shirts between fans would be arranged for anyone interested in participating.

Jim Beaver's "Balls"

From the site: "This Campaign will support Rainbow House, a non-profit organization that promotes and preserves the Cherokee language, culture, and traditions through teaching and community involvement. A portion of all proceeds goes to Rainbow House Orders begin shipping the third week of October T-shirts 100% cotton / Machine Wash / Imported Trucker hat 100% polyester / Adjustable plastic snap back / Imported Ladies baseball cap 100% cotton twill / Adjustable strap back / Imported"

Jim Beaver announced this campaign on twitter by stating, "Excited to announce my shirt campaign benefiting Rainbow House. You can check it out here #Balls." Jim and Shirts continued to promote the campaign on twitter throughout its duration. Like with the "Clarence" campaign, Shirts offered the opportunity for fans to buy campaign items for other fans who couldn't afford them. Misha Collins also showed his support for the campaign by modeling the trucker hat.

Rachel Miner's "Be the Clarence"

Rachel's letter accompanying the campaign.

Charity: Earth Justice
On Sale: August 2017 Tanks, t-shirts, bracelets, cinch bags
Number sold: 4,553

From the site: "This Campaign will support Earthjustice, the nation's original and largest nonprofit environmental law organization, leveraging their expertise and commitment to fight for justice and advance the promise of a healthy world for all. For more info on Earthjustice click: HERE. Join us in standing with Rachel Miner to support this effort!

A portion of all proceeds goes to Earthjustice Orders begin shipping the third week of September T-shirts 100% cotton / Bag 50%cotton, 50% polyester, measures 17.75"h x 14.5"w / Machine Wash / Imported Bracelet brass charm nickel free, antique tin finish / Bracelet adjustable up to 10in circumference"

After a few days of hype beforehand, Rachel Miner launched this campaign with the tweet, "I'm excited -launch day is finally here! Help me support EarthJustice & #BeTheClarence you want to see in the world." During past campaigns, fans of the show (while frequently referring to actors, crew and fans as "SPN family") have bought and then mailed campaign shirts to other fans who were not able to purchase ones for themselves, or purchased extras and then run raffles on twitter or tumblr to give them away for free. With this campaign, Rachel took this underground tradition and made it mainstream by including a gift option directly in the campaign, allowing "donors" to be matched with recipients, similar to the way GISHWHES allowed giving of registrations. Rachel was quoted by Shirts's twitter as saying, "I want you to set this up so people can pay it forward."

The campaign was met with a wave of enthusiasm from fans, who created fanart of Rachel in the campaign shirt, which Rachel often retweeted and responded positively to throughout the campaign, as well as edited collages of images from the actors's twitters made by fans. Shirts also used a collage-style ad of the photos of the SPN actors in their shirts for an e-mail advertisement during the campaign. The campaign's goal of 1,000 shirts was met within three days, and the website hosting the campaign crashed on the fourth day, according to Shirts's twitter, from the number of people accessing it.

Campaign shirts were modeled in pictures posted to twitter by other Supernatural actors showing their support, including Kim Rhodes, Briana Buckmaster, Rob Benedict, Ruth Connell, Matt Cohen, Alaina Huffman (and family), Osric Chau, Samantha Smith, Jared Padalecki (and Baby), and twice by Misha Collins.

He ends the instagram post with the dedication, "For my Nana. And my wonderful Grandfather, Aunts, Mother and part-time caregiver who nurtured her and gave comfort. #LTTU"

Charity: Attitudes In Reverse
On Sale: July 2017 Unisex t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, 3/4 raglans
Number sold: 303

From the site: "Attitudes in Reverse has a mission to provide unlimited mental health awareness and suicide prevention programs to youth and young adults regardless of ability to pay. Inspire hope for those suffering from mental pain so they seek assistance while instilling empathy and understanding of mental health disorders throughout society. Find out more here."

Mark Pellegrino announced this campaign on his twitter by stating, "Say hello to my YES t-shirt. Let's de stigmatize mental illness together." The play on the word "yes" is a reference to Lucifer and other angels requiring consent to inhabit a human vessel. Mark P continued to promote the campaign through his twitter for the duration, including a tweet as to why he was supporting Attitudes in Reverse, and an affirmation that, "For someone (like me) with depression, PTSD and generalized anxiety disorder, a reminder of what's good always helps. 😈".

While many fans supported Mark P both through shirt sales and in comments on twitter, there was some controversy during this campaign. Some fans criticized the slogan on the shirt, saying it was more of a slogan for Mark P's political ideals than for the battle against mental illness. Others referenced instances of past twitter conversations in which they would not support Mark P's behavior as a reason for not purchasing a shirt. Mark P has a history of twitter hate from Creation Entertainment convention-goers and fans of the show, with both sides referring to comments made as cyberbullying.

At the end of the campaign, after a low number of sales, Mark P tweeted that 100% of the money would be donated to Attitudes In Reverse.

During the campaign, Kim and Briana posted images of themselves (and their daughters) wearing the shirts on their twitter accounts a number of times including video. Multiple contests were run through this campaign, including a chance to win a skype session with Kim and Briana and a chance to be a member of Kim and Briana's 2017 GISHWHES team.

The shirts were also modeled in pictures posted to twitter by Supernatural actors including Ruth Connell (and a flamingo), Matt Cohen, Emily Swallow, Rob Benedict, Rachel Miner, Lisa Berry, and Misha Collins.

Kim and Briana continue to be wayward as fuck.

Wayward Daughters is a collaboration and we elected to support Random Acts. I have personal reasons for this as well.

I have been wayward much of my life. Often it was by choice, opting to belligerently pursue the road less traveled because it led someplace I shouldn't go. Other times it was by failure and I'd wind up sitting alone among

the metaphorical thorn bushes, weeping and hoping for guidance. Or at least an end to the self-inflicted pain. I was judged, I was scolded, I was silenced, I was mocked, I was ignored... but there was only one thing that ever brought me home. An act of kindness. It costs me nothing to be kind. It gives me everything. And practicing kindness now includes how I treat myself. I still identify as wayward. But we all do, don't we? A little? So supporting Random Acts seems a pretty logical thing for Wayward Daughters to do.

Wayward Daughters supporting Random Acts seems like a pretty obvious pairing to me. The movement behind Wayward daughters is inspired by the idea that we are all capable of finding our greater selves. Every set-back, every time we fall, it gives us new opportunity to rise up. But doing it alone can be tricky. That’s why we need to band together to support each other. To be there to lend a hand when one of us is feeling too weak. My dream for Wayward daughters is that it becomes a symbol to silently say “Go. Be you. I've got your back”. Random Acts is the perfect embodiment of such words. They are there to not only help you, but to also teach and encourage you to help others. They are an incredible charity and I am truly grateful and humbled to have an opportunity to help them.

Misha's Holiday T-shirt

Mishaholidaytee1.jpg

Charity: Random Acts
On Sale: November, 2014
Number Sold: 8,508

From Misha: I got sentimental watching SPN last night. It's been many years working on this show. Even longer for some others. Kids have been born, people have passed away. Lives have been touched. In 2010 i banded together with some SPN fans to start Random Acts. Since then we have funded and inspired thousands of charitable acts including the construction of an orphanage and the funding of a school. We have big ambitions for this coming year. We're going to try to build another school and launch a charity crowdsourcing platform that we hope will move mountains. If you want to support these projects, you can buy a T-shirt. 100% of proceeds will go to Random Acts and you will have a nice, warm shirt in time for the holidays. Buy a shirt and i promise we'll try to galvanize some good with the money we raise. (It's also a clever way for me to realize my life-long dream of resting my head on your chest. (Source)
