A reference to Anakin Skywalker's final descent to Darth Vader in Star Wars.


Zachariah: It's Apocalypse Now, and we're back on the same team again.

A reference to the movie Apocalypse Now.

5.02 Good God, Y'All

War: Last week, this was Mayberry.

Mayberry was the name of the idyllic small town where the '60s sitcom The Andy Griffith Show was set.


Guy: So, uh, you think that all this comes from outer space?
Dean: This isn't X-Files, pal.

The X-Files was a '90s TV series about FBI investigations of the paranormal and aliens. Many of the writers, producers, and directors of Supernatural have also done work for The X-Files.

5.03 Free to Be You and Me

Dean: Eat it, Twilight!

Dean's reference as he kills a vampire refers to the popular book and movie series, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.


Dean: So, what -- I'm Thelma and you're Louise, and we're just gonna hold hands and sail off this cliff together?

At the end of the 1991 movie Thelma and Louise, they hold hands as they drive off a cliff to escape police.


Dean: And let me guess, he vanished into thin air?
Deputy: No, Kolchak.

Carl Kolchak was a fictional newspaper reporter of the movies The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler, and in the series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. He specialized in investigating paranormal cases.


Dean: Hi. Alonzo Mosely, FBI. This is my partner, Eddie Moscone.

Alonzo Mosely is the name of an FBI agent in the movie Midnight Run and Eddie Moscone is a bail bondsman in the same movie.

5.04 The End

Dean: So, you're his vessel, huh? Lucifer's wearing you to the prom?
Sam: That's what he said.
Dean: Just when you thought you were out, they pull you back in, huh, Sammy?

Michael Corleone says "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in", in The Godfather: Part III, when he tries to enter legitimate enterprises and leave the Mafia lifestyle, but is forced to retaliate after an attempt to kill him fails.


Dean: The last thing they need to see is a version of The Parent Trap.

The Parent Trap is a movie about twins who are separated at birth.


Dean:: I thought I smelled your stink on this Back to the Future crap.

Back to the Future is a famous '80s movie 3-parter, in which Michael J. Fox travels to the past and later future in his DeLorean.


Dean: And the orgies and the love guru crap?"

The Love Guru was a 2008 comedy movie starring Mike Myers.

5.05 Fallen Idols

Sheriff Carnegie: Professional assassins. You know, like in Michael Clayton.

In Michael Clayton, lawyer Arthur Edens is killed by professional hit men.


Dean: I'll go grab East of Eden's keychain.

James Dean starred in the 1955 film East of Eden.


Dean: Hate to break it to you, lady, but I'm no Paris Hilton BFF.

Paris Hilton's My New BFF is a reality show where fans of the heiress compete to become her new friend.


Dean: I've never even seen House of Wax.

Jared and Paris co-starred in the 2005 horror flick House of Wax.


Sam: How long am I going to be on double secret probation?

In the movie Animal House Dean Vernon Wormer is trying to remove the Delta fraternity from campus due to repeated conduct violations. Since they are already on probation, he puts the Deltas on "Double Secret Probation."

5.06 I Believe the Children Are Our Future

Dean: I had some pretty bad babysitters. Like Ms. Chancy. She only cared about two things: Dynasty, and bedtime.

Dynasty was an '80s soap opera about the Carringtons, a wealthy Colorado oil family.


Dean: That'll do, pig.

A line from the Australian movie Babe, about a pig that learns to be a sheepdog. In the final sheep trial, Babe gets a perfect score, and Farmer Hoggett says to him "That'll do, Pig. That'll do.

5.07 The Curious Case of Dean Winchester

Sam: I didn't know what you were. I mean, have you seen you? You look like—
Dean: The old chick in Titanic. I know. shut up.
Sam: I was gonna say Emperor Palpatine.

Emperor Palpatine a reference to the aged wizened character in the Star Wars films.


Sam: It's like Grumpy Old Men!

Grumpy Old Men was a 1993 film starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.


Sam: It's like Mission Pathetic!

A reference to the TV series and movies Mission Impossible.


Dean: (to Bobby) Let's go, Ironsides.

Ironside is the name of the famous wheelchair bound lawyer portrayed by Raymond Burr in the 1960/70s TV show Ironside.


Dean: Y'know, Bobby, killing you is officially on my bucket list.

Bucket List was a 2007 movie starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman about two men who make a list of things to do before they "kick the bucket."

5.08 Changing Channels

Dean: You might say you wouldn't like him when he's angry.

The wife of the first victim reports seeing The Incredible Hulk and the line Dean quotes is a classic from the TV show and movies.

5.10 Abandon All Hope...

Dean: Okay, Huggy Bear, just don't lose them.

Huggy Bear was the name of the streetwise pimp who acted as an informant for Starksy and Hutch on the '70s TV show.


Meg: We're going to Heaven, Clarence.

A quote from It's a Wonderful Life, in which the angel Clarence shows Jimmy Stewart that life is worth living, and then finally gets his wings and goes to heaven.

5.11 Sam, Interrupted

Dean: Look here Nurse Ratched, I’ve seen "Cuckoo’s Nest", so don’t try any of that soul destroying authoritarian crap on me.
Karla: Okie Dokie.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a movie starring Jack Nicholson as a prisoner who gets himself transferred to a psych institute ruled over by the sadistic Nurse Ratched.


Dean: How was your Silkwood shower?

In the movie Silkwood, Karen Silkwood undergoes a radiation decontamination shower that involves high water pressure and harsh scrubbing.


Dean: Well then, quid pro quo Clarice.

This is a famous quote by serial killer Hannibal Lecter to FBI agent Clarice Starling in the movie Silence of the Lambs.

5.12 Swap Meat

Dean: Welcome back, Kotter.

This is a reference to the 1970s sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter, which was set in a Brooklyn High School.


Trevor: Everybody knows Dean. He's Hell's most wanted.

This could be a reference to the TV show America's Most Wanted or the movie Malibu's Most Wanted.

5.13 The Song Remains the Same

Dean: [about Anna] So she’s gone all Glenn Close?
Castiel: Who’s Glenn Close?
Dean: No-one... just this psycho bitch who likes to boil rabbits.

Glenn Close played Alex Forrest in the film Fatal Attraction. In the movie, she becomes psychotically vindictive after a fling with Michael Douglas. In one scene, she breaks into the family home and leaves a boiling pot on the stove containing the family’s pet rabbit. The term “bunny boiler” became slang for someone obsessed with an ex-lover.


Dean: So you’re like a DeLorean without enough plutonium?

A DeLorean was the vehicle used as a time machine in the Back to the Future movies.


Dean: What do I look like? Dr. Angel, Medicine Woman?

A reference to the show Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman starring Jane Seymour (who Jensen also appeared with in Smallville), in which she played a doctor in the Old West.


Dean: What are we going to tell them?
Sam: The truth?
Dean: What? That their sons are back from the future to save them from an angel that’s gone terminator? Come on, those movies haven’t even been made yet.

In the movie The Terminator, the eponymous cyborg travels back in time to kill Sarah Connor so that her son John Connor will never be born.

5.14 My Bloody Valentine

Dean: Why do angels care when Harry met Sally?

A reference to quintessential romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.


Sam: Unleash the Kraken.

In the 1981 movie Clash of the Titans, based on the heroic stories of Greek mythology, Zeus instructs Poseidon to release the sea monster the Kraken, with the line, "Unleash the Kraken!" The phrase passed into popular culture. At the time the episode aired, it was featured in the ads for the 2010 remake of the film.

5.15 Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid

Sheriff Mills: Gentlemen. I'm Sheriff Jody Mills. I don't believe we've had the pleasure.
Dean: Agents Dorfman and Neidermeyer. FBI.

This is a reference to the characters of Kent Dorfman and Douglas Neidermeyer from the 1978 John Belushi movie National Lampoon's Animal House.


Digger: Heads up "Fargo".

Fargo was a 1996 Coen Brothers movie. The reference here is to the character of Sheriff Marge Gunderson, played by Frances McDormand.


Dean: So he goes "full metal jacket" on us?

Full Metal Jacket is a 1987 war film directed by Stanley Kubrick.


Dean: I'm not going to leave Bobby at home with the Bride of Frankenstein.

A reference to the classic horror movie of the same name in which the scientist creates a mate for the monster, made from a reanimated female corpse.

5.16 Dark Side of the Moon

Castiel: Don’t go into the light.
Dean: Okay, thanks Carol-Anne.

In the movie Poltergeist, Carol-Anne is pulled through a television into another realm by a poltergeist. When trying to get her out the psychic warns her “not to go into the light."


Ash: Welcome to my blue Heaven!

My Blue Heaven is the title of two films. One was released in 1950, starring Betty Grable and the other in 1990, starring Steve Martin and Rick Moranis.

5.18 Point of No Return

Adam: What, we gonna to hop into the Family Truckster? Pop on down to Walley World?

This is a reference to the film National Lampoon's Vacation, where the Griswold family load up for a cross country trip in a green station wagon called the Family Truckster and drive to Walley World.

5.19 Hammer of the Gods

Dean: And you keep an eye on Norman Bates here.

Norman Bates was the creepy serial killing owner of the Bates Motel in the Hitchcock movie Psycho.


Dean: [after fishing eyeballs out of a pot of soup] Motel Hell.

Motel Hell is a 1980 comedy horror spoof which set up movies like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. In the movie a brother and sister capture people at their motel and use them to produce smoked meat.


Gabriel: (to Dean) I'm the Costner to your Houston.

In the movie The Bodyguard Kevin Costner plays the bodyguard to Whitney Houston's character.


Gabriel: I mean, screw this marble. Let's go check out Pandora.

Pandora was the home of the Na'vi in James Cameron's 2009 movie Avatar Pandora is also the name of an inner satellite, or moon, of Saturn. Marble may also be referencing the end of the movie Men in Black [1] when the earth is revealed to be a marble.


Dean: All right, you primitive screwheads, listen up.

This line is a quote from the movie Army of Darkness aka Evil Dead III. The line is used by Ash (Bruce Campbell) when explaining to peasants about his rifle after being sent back in time to the Dark Ages to retrieve the Necronomicon. It's a classic, really.

5.21 Two Minutes to Midnight

Dean: So this is Dr. Evil's lair, huh?

A reference to Austin Powers's arch-nemesis. His lair changes in the three Austin Powers movies.

Crowley: They don't get to be horsemen for nothing. So, you boys better stock up on...Well, everything. This time next Thursday, we'll all be living in zombieland.

This is most likely a reference to the 2009 movie Zombieland. This horror comedy focuses on a group of people who have found a way to survive a world overrun by zombies.

5.22 Swan Song

Writers: Eric Kripke and Eric "Giz" Gerwirtz

Sam: If this thing goes our way, and I Triple Lindy into that box, you know I'm not coming back.

The Triple Lindy was a ridiculous high dive done by Rodney Dangerfield in the movie Back to School.
