7.01 Meet the New Boss

Dean: Excuse me, you got any Grey Poupon?

Dean is referencing a popular and widely spoofed 1980s series of ads for Grey Poupon mustard. The line is also a quote from Wayne's World. Watch it here.

7.02 Hello, Cruel World

Lucifer: You come back, I'm sorry, with no soul like some preppy American Psycho until Saint Dean glues you back together again by buying you some magic amnesia?

American Psycho refers to the book by Bret Easton Ellis (later made into a movie with Christian Bale) about an investment banker who is a sadistic serial killer.


Bobby: Whatever they're up to, it ain't about going Mothra down mainstreet.

Mothra is a giant mutant mothlike monster from Japanese cinema.


Bobby: What are you doing?
Dean: Turning on his GPS in case he tries to fly the Cuckoo's Nest

A reference to the novel by Ken Kesey One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest which was made into a movie of the same name starring Jack Nicholson. It is about a larrikin criminal who stirs up trouble in a psychiatric institution.


Dean: Why would the devil holodeck you a whole new life, when he could just kick your ass all over the cage?

The Holodeck is a facility where an artificial reality can be created. It was a feature of starships in the Star trek universe.


Sam: No Dean, I'm good. No white rabbits. I am not seeing anything.

The 1950 James Stewart movie Harvey in which the main character Elwood P. Dowd claims to see a 6'3.5" tall rabbit named Harvey. This may also be a reference to the character of the same name in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.


Dean: You cannot be in that crater back there. I can't… If you're gone, I swear I am gonna strap my Beautiful Mind brother into the car and I'm gonna drive us off the pier.

Beautiful Mind is a 2001 movie about the schizophrenic maths prodigy John Nash, in which he has trouble distinguishing his hallucinations from reality.


Lucifer: It ends when you can't take it anymore.

Lucifer's encouraging Sam to kill himself to end the dream may be an indirect reference to the movie Inception, in which the characters could wake up from a dream by killing themselves in the dream state. Leonardo DiCaprio's wife in the movie killed herself because she thought she was still dreaming and couldn't tell the difference between dream and reality.


Lucifer: Hey - wake up sunshine. Up and at 'em, Atom Ant!

Atom Ant is a 1960's-era cartoon superhero, whose catch phrase was "Up and at 'em, Atom Ant!"

7.03 The Girl Next Door

Dean: Before you bail again - Girl, Interrupted over there - any thoughts?

Girl, Interrupted is a memoir by Susanna Kaysen and the movie based on same, both entitled Girl, Interrupted and depicting Kaysen's stay in a mental health facility. Misha Collins has a bit part in the movie; a more important character is played by Clea Duvall, who co-starred with Jensen in Ten Inch Hero. The season five episode 5.11 Sam, Interrupted was a play on this title.


Sam: You dropped this. "Amy Pond," huh? Cute name. You weren't kidding about the mortgage.

Amy Pond is the name of the companion of the eleventh doctor in Doctor Who.


TV Commercial: My Bloodiest Valentine in hell-a-vision 3D.

A commercial for this movie plays while Dean is asleep on the couch. Jensen played Tom Hanniger in My Bloody Valentine 3D.

7.04 Defending Your Life

Sam: [with EMF meter] It's going crazy. Some kind of ghost maybe?
Dean: With a license? A license to kill!

In the James Bond books and movies, the "00" in "007" indicates that Bond has a "licence to kill." This is a tag line through the series, and the name of both a book and a movie.


Sam: It could be Christine-like.

Christine was a 1983 horror film about a sentient automobile named "Christine," adapted from the novel by Stephen King.


Dean: So what, he causes so much misery that some dog goes Cujo on him from beyond the grave?

Bob Singer, who directed this episode, was a producer on the movie Cujo.


Sam: Objection!
Osiris: Grounds?
Sam: Witnesses being called without prior notice.
Dean: Good one!
Sam: I saw it on The Good Wife.

The Good Wife is a legal drama on CBS that started airing in 2009.


Dean: Enough Ally McBeal.

Ally McBeal was a 1990s legal comedy-drama by David E Kelley.

7.05 Shut Up, Dr. Phil

Dean: Screens up, Captain.

This may be a botched Star Trek reference. On Star Trek, a captain might order their cloaking device raised in order to hide from an enemy ship. Under other circumstances, a subordinate might inform his captain that he has raised the ships shields by saying "shields up, Captain!" However, these don't hide the ship, but rather protect it from harm.


Sam: Really? From a freaking flask? What are you - Bad Santa?

Bad Santa is a black comedy starring Billy Bob Thornton about an alcoholic who works as Santa, and each year robs the mall he's working.


Dean: It’s kind of like Bewitched. Don’s Darrin, doesn’t even know it, lots of laughs until you cheat on your wife
Sam: A Bewitched reference. Really?
Dean: Hey, Nicole Kidman was in the remake. Redhead, hello!
Sam: Bewitched just got a lot less funny.
Dean: It’s like when they switched Darrins.

Bewitched was a 1960s sitcom about an average suburban couple - Darren and his wife Samantha, who is a witch. A film adaption starring Nicole Kidman was made in 2005. On the original show, the actor who played Darrin fell ill and was abruptly replaced by another actor. Dean's reference to this leads one to believe that he is in fact a fan of the original.


Dean: That means we’ve got not just one pissed off witch, we’ve got two. It’s full on War of the Roses.

Dean is referring to the 1989 black comedy featuring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as a wealthy divorcing couple who sabotage each others lives in various and outrageous ways.

7.06 Slash Fiction

Leviathan!Sam: Everybody be cool, this is a robbery!
Leviathan!Dean: Anybody moves and I'll execute every last one of you!

The robbery of the burger shop in St. Louis by the Leviathans references the diner robbery in Pulp Fiction almost line for line. Fake Sam's line is identical to Pumpkin's. When the fake Dean jumps up on a table, his line "If anyone moves, I'll execute every last one of you." is almost the same as Honey Bunny's in the movie - minus the expletives. The promo for the episode had Leviathan!Dean being bleeped as he said "motherfucking." A surf-rock style guitar riff plays after their lines, somewhat reminiscent of the opening scene of Pulp Fiction. Bobby makes an additional reference to the movie by referring to the Leviathans as "Pumpkin" and "Honey Bunny" Diner scene with Pumpkin and Honey Bunny from Pulp Fiction.


Frank: Okay, we can Blue Steel you up some new I.D. - Mr. and Mr. Smith

The aliases "Mr. and Mr. Smith" are a reference to the eponymous spy couple in the movie starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie - Mr. and Mrs. Smith. In that movie the Air Supply song "Making Love Out Of Nothing at All" features on the soundtrack, and at one point Brad Pitt mimes to it in the car - as Dean does to another Air Supply song in this episode.


Dean: Nobody puts baby in a corner!
Sam: You know that's a line from...
Dean: Swayze movie! Swayze always gets a pass!

"Nobody puts baby in a corner" is a line from the film Dirty Dancing.


Frank Devereaux: Well I'll be darned: Psycho Butch and Sundance.

A reference to the two main characters in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, a 1969 film that tells the story of Wild West outlaws Robert LeRoy Parker, aka Butch Cassidy, and his partner Harry Longabaugh, aka the "Sundance Kid," as they migrate to Bolivia while on the run from the law. The Sundance Kid is also referenced by Sam in 6.18 Frontierland, when he calls Dean "Sundance."


Bobby: You bleed, black snot, sure. But you bleed, you can die.

This is similar to Arnold Schwarzenegger's famous line from the movie Predator: "If it bleeds, we can kill it."


Dean: Okay, let me get Mr. Wizard on speed-dial.

Don Herbert aka Mr. Wizard hosted a series of TV shows about science for kids from the 1950s through to the 1990s. Mr. Wizard has also been referenced by Sam in 5.06 I Believe the Children Are Our Future and Dean in 6.05 Live Free or Twihard


Dean: You want me to Desperate Housewife these mothers?

Desperate Housewives is a prime time soap that started in 2004 about a group of suburban families.

7.07 The Mentalists

Dean: Forget it, Sam. It's Lily Dale.

This is a reference to the movie Chinatown which ends with the line Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown


Melanie Golden: (to Dean) So The X-files is real, or you just stopped talking like an FBI agent?

The X-Files TV series featured FBI agents Mulder and Scully who investigated the paranormal.


Dean: [after discovering that Margaret Fox's bones are missing] Geraldo'd.

This is a reference to the TV special The Mystery of Al Capone's Vault hosted by talk show host Geraldo Rivera where an excavation into what was supposedly a vault of Al Capone's wealth turned out to be empty.

7.08 Season Seven, Time for a Wedding!

Dean: Okay, "Dead Poets Society", fine.

Dead Poets Society is a 1989 film in which Robin Williams plays an English teacher at a conservative boys' school who introduces his students to the notion of carpe diem or "seize the day."


Garth: We, uh, find Sam, hopefully fix this, everybody's home in time for "America's Got Talent."

America's Got Talent is a reality television show that features singers, dancers, magicians, comedians, and other performers.

7.09 How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters

Bobby: You don't shoot Bambi, jackass. You shoot Bambi's mother.

Bambi is a 1942 animated Disney movie about a young fawn called Bambi, whose mother is killed by hunters.


Brandon: Sidewinder soup and salad combo goes to Big Bird. TDK Slammer to Ken Doll. And a little Heart Smart for Creepy Uncle.

Big Bird is a very tall, very yellow, avian character from Sesame Street. See Sam's Height for other references.


Dean: Of course, the sketch looks more like a Chewbacca head.

Chewbacca aka Chewie, is a Wookie who is friends with Han Solo in the Star Wars universe.


Sam: Okay, so whatever turned Gerry Browder into a Pumpkinhead - and is currently turning Dean into an idiot --

Pumpkinhead is a vengeance demon which possesses a corpse dug up from a pumpkin patch in the 1988 horror movie of the same name.


Bobby: Now I have officially seen it all.
Sam: Bobby, what is it?
Bobby: He's making the doctor eat himself.

This may be a reference to the following line from Team America: World Police:

Gary Johnston: OK, a limousine that can fly. Now I have seen everything.
Spottswoode: Really? Have you seen a man eat his own head?
Gary Johnston: No.
Spottswoode: So then, you haven't seen everything.

7.10 Death's Door

Rufus: What year is this? '89-ish?
Bobby: What's it matter? I'm still stuck in eternal friggin' sunshine.

Bobby is referring to the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind which is about a couple who have their memories of each other erased.


Reaper: Bobby... you've helped. You got handed a small, unremarkable life, and you did something with it. Most men like you die of liver disease, watching Barney Miller reruns.

Barney Miller is a 1970s sitcom set around a New York City detectives' squad room.

7.11 Adventures in Babysitting

Frank: Patience, grasshopper.

In the 1970s TV series Kung Fu, Kwai Chang Caine is a Shaolin monk, whose teacher Master Po would refer to him as "grasshopper."


Dean: [referring to Bobby's coordinates] Relax, it's a field not the Death Star. Dick's at a TED conference, it's all over the Huffington Post.

The Death Star was Darth Vader's planet destroying space station in the Star Wars movies.

7.12 Time After Time

Writer: Robbie Thompson

Dean: Nothing that turns a dude into a Cryptkeeper.

The Cryptkeeper was the wizened zombie host of the horror TV show Tales from the Crypt.


Dean: Special Agent Smith. This is, uh, Special Agent Smith. No relation.

This is a reference to the line "Agent Smith and Smith. No relation" from Die Hard.


Dean: Alright, well I am twelve monkeyed no matter what I say so here goes.

12 Monkeys is a 1995 movie by Terry Gilliam about a man sent to the past to collect a virus.


Dean: I gotta tell you Untouchables is like one of my favorite movies ever. I must've seen it like 50 times.

Dean is referring to Brian De Palma's 1987 film The Untouchables starring Kevin Costner, Robert DeNiro and Sean Connery, which was based on Eliot Ness' memoir of the same name. Dean's line "because that's the Chicago way!" is a quote from Sean Connery in the movie. Dean also uses the alias "Agent Costner" (of the Department of Homeland Termite Invasion).


Ness: I'm gonna stay here and keep my peepers on the Sheik and the Sheba.

The 1921 film The Sheik starring Rudolph Valentino was a huge hit (particularly with women), and had a big impact on popular culture. The term "Sheik" came to mean a guy out looking for women, and "Sheba" was the term used for the object of his desire.


Dean: He's using the Biff strategy... Chronos is betting on races he already knows the outcome of.

In Back to the Future II, a Biff Tannen from 2015 gives a sports almanac to his younger 1955 self, who then uses it to make bets and become rich.


Dean: Back to the Future III! I need to borrow some paper.

In the movie Back to the Future III, Doc Brown gets trapped in 1885, and tells Marty whats happened by writing a letter and arranging for it to be delivered seventy years later. Technically, the delivery of the letter happens at the end of Back to the Future II, but the letter's contents aren't revealed until the third movie. Samuel Colt used a similar strategy to get the Phoenix's ashes to Sam and Dean in 6.18 Frontierland. Also, in the movie Frequency, characters in different times are able to exchange evidence of a crime by hiding it under a floorboard in a house they share.

7.13 The Slice Girls

Lydia: ...dinner and a movie, which sounded fine, except the movie was Human Centipede.

The Human Centipede (First Sequence) is a 2010 Dutch horror movie about a mad scientist who kidnaps three tourists and sews them together mouth to anus to make a human centipede.


Dean: This morning, Emma was a baby. By sunset, she's Hannah Montana. Early years.

Hannah Montana is Miley Cyrus' character's stage name in the TV show of the same name, about a teenage girl who is secretly a pop star. The show debuted in 2006 when Miley was 14.

7.14 Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie

Dean: We don't care if you broke bad or whatever.

Dean is referring to Breaking Bad a series on AMC about a high school chemistry teacher who, after being diagnosed with cancer, starts producing methamphetamines in order to make money.


Sam: If it bleeds, you can kill it.

This is a line from the movie Predator.


Dean: The one guy who was gonna rat, he got Bruced.

The mechanical shark used in the movie Jaws was named Bruce.


Dean: Seriously - Dractopus, Seabiscuit the Impaler, Landshark... what's next?.

Landshark was a recurring character in Saturday Night Live sketches.

7.15 Repo Man

Demon!Jeffrey: Well, if it isn't the wiccan bitch of the west.

This is a reference to Wicked the Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz.


Demon: Keep sawing away at your ropes, Penelope Pitstop. We can dance standing up if you want.

Penelope Pitstop is a fictional character who appeared in the Hanna-Barbera animated series Wacky Races, and starred in the spin-off The Perils of Penelope Pitstop, voiced by Janet Waldo, 1969.


Hallucifer: Come on Sam, say it with me now... goooood morning Vietnam!

Lucifer references the signature sign on of DJ Adrian Cronauer in the film Good Morning, Vietnam. Cronauer's program was broadcast on the Armed Forces Radio Services during the Vietnam War. The opening salutation was an acknowledgment that the troops had woken up to another day of war.

7.16 Out with the Old

Dean: I saw Black Swan. Twice. Hot tutu-on-tutu action? Come on, Sam. What's wrong with you?

Black Swan is a 2010 psychological thriller by Darren Aronofsky about ballet dancers competing for the role of the White Swan and the Black Swan in Swan Lake. Dean also refers to Prince Siegfried, who is the lead male ballet dancer role. Dean's comment about "tutu on tutu action" refers to the lesbian sex scene in the movie.

7.17 The Born-Again Identity

Dean: It's not like the guy's freaking Norman Bates. Norman Bates was the serial killer in the Hitchcock movie Psycho, who killed his mother, kept her corpse in his house and assumed her identity. Previously mentioned in 5.19 Hammer of the Gods.


Dean: Quit being Dalai-friggin-Yoda about this. Get pissed!

Dean has mashed up the names of two individuals known for their equanimity in the face of challenges - the spiritual leader of Tibet Dalai Lama (whose name he mispronounces) and Jedi Master Yoda.


Meg: Dean, Dean, Dean. You got some 'splaining to do!

"Lucy, you've got some 'splainin to do!" was a catchphrase of Lucy's husband Ricky Ricardo in the '50/'60s sitcom I Love Lucy starring Lucille Ball.


Meg: You sure we wouldn't be safer travelling with a full-throttle angel?

A reference to the 2003 movie Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, which was directed by executive producer McG.


Meg: (to Cas) That was beautiful, Clarence.

A reference to angel Clarence from It's A Wonderful Life. The name was previously used by Meg in 5.10 Abandon All Hope....

7.18 Party On, Garth

Sam: I wish I wasn't like the damn tape from The Ring; I wish I wasn't okay because I passed on the crazy.

Sam is referring to the 2002 movie The Ring, which was a remake of a Japanese horror movie Ringu. The films feature a videotape that will result in a person's death in seven days, unless someone else watches the tape within that time. The shojo was reminiscent in look to the ghost - wearing white, with long black hair - from the movies. She is known as Samara (English version) or Sadako (Japanese version).


Garth: Come with me if you want to live.

This line is a quote from the Terminator series of movies, and is used by a character in each of the movies. It is also a quote from the movie Snakes on a Plane. Samuel L Jackson says it to Nathan Phillips at the beginning of the movie and Phillips calls it back at the end.


Dean: I mean, who knows more about being a ghost than Bobby? Instant Swayze, right?

Dean is referring to Patrick Swayze in the movie Ghost, who, as a spirit, moved objects to achieve his ends. Dean speculates that if Bobby were a ghost, with his knowledge, he would similarly make his presence known. Dean previously referenced the movie in 2.01 In My Time of Dying and 4.15 Death Takes a Holiday.

7.19 Of Grave Importance

Dean: Slimer?

This is a reference to the green ghost from the 1980s Ghostbuster movies.


Bobby: For the record, I hated that Swayze flick - romantic bullcrap.

Bobby: Suck on that, Swayze!

Bobby is referring to actor Patrick Swayze's role in the movie Ghost, in which his character, who is a ghost, tries to communicate with his wife.

7.20 The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo

Bobby: Dick is about to get into the Soylent Green business.

In the 1973 dystopian sci-fi movie Soylent Green, Charlton Heston uncovers the fact that the food the population is subsisting on is not made of plankton, but is actually processed from human corpses.


Computer: How about a nice game of chess?
Charlie: Seriously? Wargames?

Wargames is a 1983 movie starring Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy, about a young hacker called David who accidentally starts playing games with a defense computer and nearly causes a nuclear war. As with Charlie's computer as she tries to hack Frank's hard drive, David finds a list of games, starting with games like chess, checkers, backgammon, and poker and then progressing finally to Global Thermonuclear War. In the movies the creator is Stephen Falken who names the computer after his dead son Joshua.


Dick Roman: You're kind of completing me right now, Charlie.

This could be a reference to a similar line in the 1996 Tom Cruise movie Jerry Maguire.


Charlie: No, but now I volunteer.

This could be a reference to the line "I volunteer as tribute," which Katniss Everdeen says in The Hunger Games, which had just opened a month before this episode aired.


Dean: Doesn't mean I got to be happy about sending in Veronica Mars.

Veronica Mars was the lead character, played by Kristen Bell, in the TV series of the same name, about a teenager who moonlights as a private detective. Kristen Bell was also the original choice for Ruby in season 3.


Charlie: Peace out, bitches.

This is a quote from the 2010 movie The Other Guys with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. At the same time Charlie makes the Vulcan "live long and prosper" sign with her fingers as popularized by Spock in Star Trek.

7.21 Reading Is Fundamental

Castiel: This is the handwriting of Metatron.
Sam: Metatron?!? You're saying a Transformer wrote that?
Dean: No, that's Megatron.
Sam: What?
Dean: The Transformer, it's Megatron.
Sam: What?

Megatron is a Transformer robot, and is the leader of the Decepticon uprising.


Meg: What up, Bullwinkle?

Meg refers to Sam as Bullwinkle who was a large moose in the cartoon The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show.


Castiel: Boop!

In the movie Dogma God, as played by Alanis Morissette, says this while poking another character's nose in the same way that Castiel does to Kevin Tran in this scene.

7.22 There Will Be Blood

Susan: What do you want me to do with the corpse?
Dick: Call Chef Fieri - I feel like BBQ.

Guy Fieri is a chef who is well known for his shows on The Food Network. He is also a collector of classic cars including a number of late '60s Chevys.


Dean: What about Paula Deen?

Paula Deen is a chef and TV personality.


Emily: What's a Kardashian?
Dean: Just another blood-sucking leech.

The Kardashians are a family made famous through the reality series Keeping Up with the Kardashians.


Dean: I think anyway you slice it we've got Pac-Man and True Blood in the same room.

True Blood refers to the vampire series on HBO based on the Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire Mystery novels.

7.23 Survival of the Fittest

Meg: There goes the Empire's last hope.

This a reference to the Star Wars movie The Empire Strikes Back. When Luke leaves his training with Yoda prematurely, the spirit of Obi Wan says to Yoda: "That boy is our last hope." However, in Star Wars, Luke is the hope of the Rebellion, rather than the evil Empire.


Dean: Shut up, Meg.

This could be the cartoon series Family Guy, in which Peter Griffin often uses the line on his daughter Meg.
