Kevin: Dean, you're alive.

Dean: Yeah, because you're a crappy shot... Katniss.

Katniss is a reference to the character Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games book and film series, for which the character is known for her archery skills.

Dean: Cas is a big boy, if things go Breaking Bad, he's got our number.

To "break bad" is to do things on the edge of the law. The term became popular and is now synonymous with the TV show Breaking Bad about a high school teacher who builds a drug empire.

Dean: Well I figured the King of Hell might know a few things, so why not Zero Dark Thirty his ass?

The 2012 movie Zero Dark Thirty depicts the hunt by the U.S. for Osama bin Laden and depicts people being tutored for information.

Dean: The stink, the freak thunderstorms and every cow dead within a three miles? I'll take demons for a thousand, Alex.

This is a reference to Alex Trebek host of the game show Jeopardy, where contestants can choose clues from different categories.

Sgt. Bates: This is Sgt Miranda Bates, who am I talking to?

Kevin: Uh... Kevin Solo.

This is a shoutout to Han Solo from Star Wars.

Dean: Burgers and Silkwood showers on me.

Silkwood showers are long hot showers done to decontaminate oneself. The movie Silkwood was about the suspicious death of a whistleblower - Karen Silkwood - in the nuclear energy industry. The movie shows how when a radiation contamination is suspected, workers are subjected to high pressure shower.

Crowley: This arrangement. Quid Pro Quo.

A reference to Silence of the Lambs, and the deal Hannibal Lecter offers Clarice from his jail cell. "If I help you, Clarice, it will be "turns" with us too. Quid pro quo. I tell you things, you tell me things."

9.03 I'm No Angel

Dean: He's getting cagey - he's using a fake name. Clarence.

Sam: That's what Meg used to call him. Of course he doesn't get that he's using the name of a pretty famous angel.

Dean: What?

Sam: Dude! It's a Wonderful Life! Seriously!

Clarence is a nickname the demon Meg had for Castiel. The name is a a reference to the movie It's A Wonderful Life, in which the angel Clarence shows Jimmy Stewart that life is worth living, and then finally gets his wings and goes to heaven.

9.04 Slumber Party

Crowley: You want more demon names. I want a room with a view.

The is a reference to a line from Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs when he says "I've been in this room for eight years now, Clarice. I know they will never ever let me out while I'm alive. What I want is a view. I want a window where I can see a tree, or even water."

Dean: You know, after everything that happened, I figured we could use a little break ourselves, so I picked you up season one of Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones is a popular HBO series based on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin.

Sam: what was all that about how hunting isn't magical?

Charlie: Saving people, hunting things, the family business? I am down. But... I was raised on Tolkien, man.I mean, where is all this?. Where are my White Walkers and my volcano and magic ring to throw in the damn thing?

White Walkers are a mysterious race of beings featured in the series of books A Song of Ice and Fire and the TV show based on them, Game of Thrones.

Charlie: Was that your Batman voice?

[Sam and Dean growl]

Charlie: That's definitely not your Batman voice.

Possibly a reference to Christian Bale's Batman voice in The Dark Knight trilogy, which is famous for being a low almost growl sounding voice.

Sam: If you need anything, just, uh, tap your heels together three times, okay?

Sam: Of course. There's no place like home.

In the 1939 film, the ruby slippers can bring back Dorothy home to Kansas by simply clicking the heels three times and repeating, "There's no place like home."

9.05 Dog Dean Afternoon

Dean: Ruh-roh!

Ruh-roh is the signature phrase of Astro and Scooby-Doo, two famous talking cartoon dogs.

Dog in Kennel: I need a Raquel Welch poster and a rock hammer.

This is a reference to the 1994 film The Shawshank Redemption, in which the lead character has a poster of Raquel Welch on his cell wall and escapes by tunneling into the wall behind the poster with a rock hammer.

Dog in Kennel: I'm shaking the fence, boss. Still shaking the fence!

This is a reference to "Shaking the bush, boss" from the 1967 film Cool Hand Luke. The main character Luke Jackson must shake a bush for the guards when he is relieving himself while out on work detail.

Sam: It says here whatever animal organ you ingest with the right mix of hoodoo and spices, you temporarily gain the power of that animal. So, okay, if you're munching on owl brains...

Dean: Your head spins around like The Exorcist?

A Reference to this famous scene from the movie The Exorcist.

Chef Leo: Oh, screw the sharktopus. You're my main course.

Sharktopus is a 2010 Syfy Channel Original Movie about a genetically engineered half-shark, half-octopus.

Dean: What happened? Draw the short-straw, decided to break bad?

Tony Manero is the suave ladies man lead character in the 1977 movie about disco, Saturday Night Fever.

9.07 Bad Boys

Dean: All right, Casper... where are you at?

Title character in the famous cartoon series Casper, the Friendly Ghost which was created in the 1950s.

Dean: All right, so hard-ass counselors, bullies, all bite the dust, but Timmy's still standing. So, what are we talking? We got ourselves a Damien on our hands?

Damien is a character appearing in the The Omen and its sequels. He was the Antichrist - the son of Satan and a jackal.

9.08 Rock and a Hard Place

Kato is the partner of the Green Hornet, who was most famously played by Bruce Lee.

9.09 Holy Terror

Dean: Yeah, because... damn straight the trials. They whacked you, man. You're not up to warp speed yet, okay? But you will be.

Warp speed refers to the the faster-than-light propulsion system that is most famously used in Star Trek.

9.10 Road Trip

Crowley: The three amigos ride again.

Three Amigos was a 1986 western comedy starring Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short.

Crowley: Laverne! Shirley! Get in here.

Laverne and Shirley was a 1970s sitcom about two roommates who worked in a Milwaukee Brewery.

Crowley: Pinhead's out cold, but watch this.

Pinhead is the main antagonist of the Hellraiser film series.

Crowley: Because Dean's sent me, Bullwinkle, the real Dean. I'll make this quick -- you've been possessed by an angel. He's got you packed away in some dusty corner of your own mind, and I'm here to break you out.

Bullwinkle is an anthropomorphic moose, and one of the main characters of The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.

9.11 First Born

A reference to the Grinch and how he had a change of heart in How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

9.12 Sharp Teeth

Sam: He’s a skinny, Ichabod Crane-looking kind of guy.

Ichabod Crane is a character in Washington Irving's 1820 story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, who is described as a school teacher who is very thin. This shoutout is a particular reference to the Fox TV series Sleepy Hollow. Orlando Jones, one of the stars of the series, often live-tweets during Supernatural and he and Supernatural writer Robbie Thompson have talked about writing a crossover series called SuperSleepy.

Dean: Anything on Gadreel?

Sam: Actually, yeah. Turns out he left some grace in me before he bolted.

Dean: You know how wrong that sounds, right?

Sam: Wouldn't worry about it, Cas took care of it.

Dean: I've been gone for two weeks and it feels like an episode of Teen Mom!

Teen Mom was a reality TV series which followed teenaged mothers.

Sam: Truth be told I am more interested in murderers and X-Files-y stuff.

The X-Files was a TV series about the investigation of the paranormal.

Reverend Jim: The powers that be brought this beautiful compassionate woman into my life.

The Powers That Be is the name of a TV show in which Eve Gordon, who plays the Reverend's wife Joy Myers, had a major role.

Dean: Oh, what? Sheriff Andy Taylor wasn't good enough for you?

Sheriff Andy Taylor was the small town sheriff played by Andy Griffith in the eponymously titled The Andy Griffith Show.

9.13 The Purge

Wayne McNut: Hey, back off, Skeletor. I won fair and square.

"Slim" Jim Morgan: Like hell you did, Jabba! I saw you slip a hot dog in your pocket!

Jabba the Hutt is the fat slug like crime lord from Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, who placed a bounty on Han Solo's head.

Sam: You go to bed last night?

Dean: What? Uh, no. No, "Rudy" was on, and then, uh… "Unforgiven," and then I was too jacked to sleep. So...research.

Rudy is an inspirational sports story about Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, and his dream to play football for the University of Notre Dame, despite his size disadvantage. Dean previously mentioned Rudy in 8.17 Goodbye Stranger. Unforgiven is a 1992 Western film starring, produced and directed by Clint Eastwood. The film is a deconstruction of the Western genre, it also deals with the fine line between being a hero or a villain.

Dean: I mean, what do we got ourselves? A "Thinner" sitch here?

Thinner is a Stephen King novel, written under the pseudonym Richard Bachmann, and later made into a movie, about a man who is cursed by an elderly Romani man to lose weight until he dies.

Dean: Yes, personal training brothers. Kind of like Hans and Franz, but, uh, less German.

Hanz and Franz were two characters - Austrian fitness freaks - played by Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon on the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live.

Sam: Yeah. Yeah. "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." Every single person in class had one of those freaky-ass suction marks.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a 1956 movie where the inhabitants of a town are taken over by aliens.

9.14 Captives

Bartholomew: I knew you'd be an asset. No one's as motivated as you to take him down. I've had my hands so full with the factions, it's distracted me from the real goal. But with you by my side -- the new boss and the ultimate rebel working together -- think of the message that would send to would-be dissidents. They'd finally understand that resistance is futile. Think of the bloodshed we could avert... what a united angelkind could accomplish in Heaven... elsewhere.

"Resistance is futile" is a line famously uttered by the Borg in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

9.15 #thinman

Dean: All right, shut up and listen. This is how it's gonna go. You two clowns are gonna get into that mystery machine outside, and you're gonna leave town or I'm gonna put holes in your knees.

The Mystery Machine was the van which Scooby-Doo and his fellow supernatural investigators - Daphne, Velma, Fred and Shaggy traveled around in.

Dean: Really? And what about the rest of the Bad News Bears, huh? Where's the -- where's the fat one? And -- and the girl? There was a girl, right?

The Bad News Bears was a 1976 movie about a terrible Little League baseball team.

Harry: When we find Thinman, are they gonna be on Dr. Phil?

Ed: No.

Harry: We're gonna be on Dr. Phil.

Dr. Phil is a self-help guru, with a syndicated television show.

Sheriff: I figured it wouldn't hurt to go a little "Medium," you know? Uh...two counties over, folks were combing the place for a poor little dead boy back in August. The cops let a psychic do her thing. Shish, bang, boom -- found a body a day later.

Medium was a TV series about a medium who works to solve crime with the District Attorney's office.

Sam: When did viral go from that baby chimp falling out of a tree to killer Candid Camera?

Candid Camera was a long running hidden camera/practical joke reality show, that first aired in 1948.

Dean: This all sounds like Sad Times at Bitchmont High. What does this have to do with the case?

Fast Times at Ridgemont High is a 1982 high school coming-of-age comedy. It is pretty much guaranteed to be one of Dean's favorite movies.

Dean: So there was no teleporting, just a couple of douchebags doing a Scream thing.

In the Scream movie franchise, a masked person kills people in the manner of horror movies, with the usual twist being that there are two killers wearing the mask.

9.17 Mother's Little Helper

Crowley: I’m going to go water the lily. Care to cross streams?

"Cross streams" may be a reference to the Ghostbusters films, in which crossing the streams of the proton packs could have catastrophic results.

9.18 Meta Fiction

Gabriel: Look, I dropped. I hid. I finally watched Downton Abbey.

Downton Abbey is a popular British period drama that airs as part of Masterpiece Classic on PBS in the United States. Gabriel later admits to never having seen Downton Abbey, saying he only said he did to fit in.

Castiel: What do you want from me?

Gabriel: Your help, Columbo. I'm getting the band back together. We're going on the "Kill Metatron" tour, and you're looking at the new frontman.

Columbo was a fictional detective in the eponymous TV series, renowned for his investigative skills and rumpled trench coat. "I'm getting the band back together" is a quote by from "Joliet" Jake Blues in the movie The Blues Brothers.

Castiel: What are you talking about?

Metatron: Hannah and her sisters? I set all that up.

Hannah and Her Sisters is a 1986 film by Woody Allen. Writer Robbie Thomspon admitted he named the angel Hannah just so he could make this joke.

Dean: We're not at this five minutes, and your already going Liam Neeson on his ass?

Liam Neeson is an Irish actor, who in his later years has become well known as an action star, specifically with the Taken series of films.

Sam: You wanna sneak up on the Death Star and take out the Emperor.

The Death Star is a space station and superweapon appearing in Star Wars and Return of the Jedi. The Emperor refers to Emperor Palpatine, leader of the Galactic Empire in the Star Wars film series.

9.19 Alex Annie Alexis Ann

Jody: Frank's still in the dark about what hit him last night, and the guy still has nightmares about the barn episode of Walking Dead.

A reference to the season 2 Walking Dead episode "Pretty Much Dead," in which it is revealed to the group of survivors that zombies are being kept in the barn on Hershel's farm. One of them is revealed to be Sophia, the daughter of one of the main characters, Carol.

9.20 Bloodlines

Dean: From what you told us this thing sounds new... or Freddy Kruger.

Freddy Kruger is the antagonist of the Nightmare on Elm Street film series, and famous for his use of a clawed glove to kill his victims.

Dean: So, you're telling me there are five monster families that run Chicago? What is this, Godfather with fangs?

The Godfather is a crime film based on a book of the same name by Mario Puzo. It is about a New York mafia family whose leadership is replaced by the returning youngest son.

Ennis: Dude, he's a frickin' Transformer.

Transformers are a line of toys/TV series/films that revolve around robots that can transform into automobiles, among other things.

Dean: All right, you're with me, Romeo.

David: Sounds good, Buffy.

Buffy is a reference to the vampire slayer from the TV series named after her.

9.21 King of the Damned

Crowley: Squirrel, I hope you were nice to your father.

A reference to Rocky the Flying Squirrel, from the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.

9.22 Stairway to Heaven

Castiel: He reeks of holy oil.

Sam: Yeah, looks like he got Home Alone-ed.

In the 1990 movie Home Alone (and it sequels), Macauley Culkin plays 8-year-old Kevin who lays a series of traps for would-be burglars. In 1998 Culkin was briefly married to recurring Supernatural actor Rachel Miner.

Metatron: Well, that's an old writer's trick -- flipping the script. You start by building up a seemingly unbeatable enemy, like the death star, or a rival angel with a bigger army.

The Death Star is the weaponized space station in Star Wars.

9.23 Do You Believe in Miracles?

Crowley: Luv, if I wanted to soapy massage from Dr. Phil I would've hit three on the speed dial.

Dr. Phil is a television self-help guru.

Dean: Game of Thrones is complicated. Shower sex that's complicated. Hell ain't complicated. You're problem ain't Hell, it's you.

Game of Thrones is a TV series based on the the epic fantasy book series titled A Song of Ice and Fire by author George R.R. Martin. It has a cast of many dozens of characters, even though many of them die on a regular basis.

Gadreel: So you said you had a plan, how we might convince them to let us pass.

Castiel: Wookie. [holds up handcuffs]

Gadreel: Brother, I have no idea what that means.

Castiel: It's a reference to a very popular film that... Never mind.

In Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Chewbacca the Wookie pretends to be Han Solo's prisoner so they can get into the prison block on the Death Star where Princess Leia is being held.

Sam: I just thought you might like to know while you two have been playing, uh Odd Couple. Your real friends, like Cas, like the angel you stabbed - Gadreel. They're out there right now risking their asses to help you win this fight.

The Odd Couple was a popular '70s TV series based on the Neil Simon play of the same name. It featured two divorced men who are very different in character who share an apartment.

Metatron: Well here's a newsflash, Humpty and Dumpty are starring in their very own version of Locked Up Abroad: Heaven, right now.

Locked Up Abroad, also known as Banged Up Abroad, is a British docudrama series that features stories of people who have been arrested while travelling abroad.
