Why was taking out the trash removed from slang?

But Chornos was the one to tell Lila he was 'Taking out the trash.' She told him she was confused with it because he forgot the trash to take out. I.E. the conversation probably went like this.
*Chornos/Ethan knows that Nash is outside sneaking up to the house.*
Lila: What are you doing this late?
Ethan: I'm going to take out the trash.(Meaning he is going to make sure Nash will never make it to the house)
*Sometime later Lila notices that the Trash is still IN the house so she goes to remind him thinking he was a little absent minded in the situation*
Lila: Ethan! How are you going to take out the trash without the trash?
