History
Introduced as a "specialist" by Castiel, Uriel takes a vessel and joins Castiel in trying to prevent witches from breaking another seal: raising Samhain. Dean questions what kind of specialist he is but receives no answer. He admits that the town he and Castiel are in isn't the first one that he has "purified."[1]
Within the Host of Heaven, Uriel was originally supervised by Castiel. But Castiel was later demoted from his supervisor station and was placed under Uriel's authority due to his growing compassion for humans, particularly towards Dean.[2]
Soon after Alastair's death,[2] it is revealed that Uriel had been trying to break the seals the entire time. He tells Castiel that he was responsible for the deaths of some angels that were once in their garrison, as he wanted their help to free Lucifer, but denied him, which forced his hand. He wanted Lucifer to reign over Earth and assume leadership in Heaven because Uriel believes that God is no longer running things and that he must be dead. Castiel and Uriel are known to have fought alongside each other during numerous angelic battles waged by Heaven. Following his revelation of his rebellion, Castiel engages him in a battle and loses, but the fallen angel Anna stabs him from behind with his own angel sword, killing him[2].
He states to Dean Winchester that "We raised you out of Hell for our purposes." In many instances, the show suggests that Uriel may have been part of the legion of angels, including Castiel, who went to Hell to rescue Dean.[2]

4.07 It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester
Uriel appears with Castiel, and appears to be keen on obliterating the town in order to prevent Samhain from rising rather than let Sam and Dean attempt to prevent it -- an attitude later revealed to be against the angels' true orders which were to follow whatever course of action Dean decided. At the end of the episode, he castigates Sam for using his powers and makes it clear that he is dispensable.
4.09 I Know What You Did Last Summer
Uriel appears with Castiel at the end of the episode to kill Anna Milton.
4.10 Heaven and Hell
Anna manages to banish Uriel and Castiel temporarily with an angel banishing sigil. Later, when they are hidden by hex bags, Uriel appears to Dean in a dream, demanding he hands over Anna, and revealing that he holds her grace in a vial around his neck. Uriel threatens to kill Sam and Dean finally gives in. Anna agrees to go with him and Castiel when they arrive, but Alastair also appears, having been led there by Ruby and the angels and demons battle it out. Uriel easily kills Alastair's two minions, but Anna takes advantage of his distraction to snatch the vial with her Grace back and smash it, allowing her to become an angel again and destroying Alastair's meatsuit. Uriel is furious and tries to attack Sam and Dean in revenge, but is stopped by Castiel. Unknown to Uriel and Castiel, this was Sam and Dean's plan all along.
4.16 On the Head of a Pin
Uriel has been promoted above Castiel, after his superiors were concerned about Castiel's empathy for Dean. He, along with Castiel, kidnaps Dean in order to have him torture Alastair and find out who's killing angels. During the interrogation, unbeknownst to Castiel, Uriel causes the devil's trap holding Alastair to be broken. Uriel is one of a group of angels who support the release of Lucifer, and he wants to free Alastair and kill Dean. When Castiel works this out, he confronts Uriel who admits the plan. He has been trying to recruit angels to the cause and killing those who refuse. He asks Castiel to join him, but Castiel refuses. Castiel engages Uriel in battle, but ultimately proves no match for him and Uriel beats Castiel, enraged at his continuing belief in God. As Uriel is about to punch Castiel again, Anna appears and stabs Uriel through the neck from behind with his own angel sword, killing him.
5.13 The Song Remains the Same
Anna travels back to 1978 intending to kill John and Mary Winchester to prevent Sam's birth from occurring so that Lucifer cannot use him a vessel. When she learns that Castiel, Dean and Sam have followed her, she recruits a young Uriel to help her with her mission. Uriel remarks that claiming a vessel is currently forbidden and recognizes that Anna isn't Anna of this time. In her defense, she tells him that she is after the people who killed him and he joins her. Michael arrives and kills Anna and sends Uriel back to Heaven.
Uriel in Lore
Uriel, whose name means "Fire of God" is the angel of the month of September, and one of the archangels usually associated with the Apocalypse. He is often identified as a cherub, and an angel of repentance and is depicted as standing at the Gates of Eden with a fiery sword or as "the angel who watches over thunder and terror."Source: Wikipedia Uriel was also the angel who discussed the fates of the leaders of the fallen angels, among them Azazel.
